Great video again John & still for me George's solo output from 1970/71 onwards was the best out of all the Beatles with only (for me) Gone Troppo falling short of the mark! The guy was class....

Great job! I agree totally with you about Bobby Whitlock. He should have been consulted. He and Clapton were the core band on ATMP. He was a major ingredient in creating that master piece. I cant believe they left him out.

Honestly the best George Harrison compilation that I have seen on the market is a two compact disc set of Bulgarian issue simply titled "Greatest Hits". I have no idea if it's a package that was sanctioned for release in that area of the world or is a pirate record of some sort but the tracklisting cannot be denied. The proprietors took the WINGSPAN approach here dedicating the first compact disc to all of Harrison's solo hits and I believe they are all there including some true oddities such as "Handle With Care" from The Traveling Wilburys and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" from LIVE IN JAPAN ("Something" and "Here Comes The Sun" from the same performance feature on disc two). The second compact disc alongside giving a near complete appraisal of the CLOUD NINE album includes a great deal of deeper cuts most notably "I Don't Want To Do It" from PORKY's REVENGE soundtrack, the two aforementioned live cuts and the wonderful "Cheer Down". Forty tracks in all, it's an absolute must!

John, I love watching your reviews and opinions - thank you for putting yourself out there.
I just want to say that I love Early Takes, Volume 1 (2012) - to me, it is the perfect way to experience George Harrison; stripped down, vulnerable, humble, and not over-produced.
There was a story that George kept copies of "Autobiography of a Yogi" (Paramahansa Yogananda) at his house to give away to people, because he loved it, and thought people could enjoy and benefit from the book.
Well, I keep copies of Early Takes 1 to give away, for much the same reason. I think that just because there is disappointment in the lack of an Early Takes 2, doesn't take away from the beauty of Early Takes 1.
Just my opinion, but I wanted to say it out loud...!

Nice overview John. The blue Dark Horse CD comp (borrowed from a friend) was my introduction to pretty much all of George's music apart from Cloud 9. I first heard it in the winter of 1991 while living in student digs and it kept me company for quite a while. Oddly enough though I've never owned it as I've never run into a copy.

    My favorite period is 1976 - 1982.
Thirty-Three & 1/3, George Harrison, Somewhere In England and Gone Troppo.
I like all of George's solo work, but those albums resonate with me the most. The fact that they weren't so widely appreciated only makes me love them even more.
As for the compilations, I'd have to give the nod to The Best of Dark Horse, as it features a couple of great bonus songs.

The 2017 vinyl boxset had two picture discs which were both singles from the Cloud Nine album ‘ Got my mind set on you’ and ‘When we was fab’ They would of been better serving fans with a single vinyl record of deep cuts and rarities from George’s back catalog. Songs such as those rejected from the ‘ Somewhere in England’ album and singles like ‘ Cockamamie business’ ‘ Cheer down’ Hottest gong in town’ Poor little girl and ‘ Mo’ I really feel that the Harrison estate did unintentionally let a few of us down with this 2017 vinyl boxset.

Quite interesting and informative video and topic. George had always seemed apathetic towards records and music production after a certain point in the 70's. The many CDs without bonus material seems symptomatic of this mindset. And despite my loving his 2000 reissue of ATMP, I was disappointed that he chose not to reduce the reverb wash. Looking extremely forward to the remix later this year by Dhani and friend. Anyway, excellent video.

Nice idea for a video John, The Concert for Bangladesh CD and DVD reissue from 2005 is worth a mention although the CD only had an extra Dylan track the DVD has loads of extras including rehearsal footage. Also those Genesis books are works of art and of course signed by George so £200+ wasn't that bad - they all sell for at least £800 each these days - but yes frustrating you can't buy them as standard books (Ringo's you can) esp. The Derek Taylor 50 years adrift, which is extraordinary.

  • @simonandrewx
    @simonandrewx 3 года назад +1

We pay a Beatle tax on things when they release super bonus deluxe editions. I spoke to someone running a record store, because I agree with your maths here John. He believes that while the five cd set should be around 50 you pay extra for Blu-ray and the Beatles tax. Which is mad coz in the lennon boxes I can state confidently I haven't played the Blu-ray's once. You buy the set to the full cds. It's a bit like Amazon Prime, most people subscribe for the quicker delivery not really for the TV channel or streaming. If they made both things separate they know no one would subscribe so they make the services part of it.
I don't have really any idea why the Harrison estate is stingy when it comes to bonus tracks and their pricing is off more often than not. It's like they had ideas in.the 80's like you said with that book George himself said on Rockline that acaller "must be a yuppy to be able to buy it". He knew what he was doing and they never seemed to adjust.

Have just subscribed as I really love John's blogs. I really feel for George over his treatment by E.M.I. over the Best of George Harrison. Side 1 has Beatle tracks and side 2 solo tracks, which implies that his solo career was not up to much (which is not true). George sent E.M.I. a track listing of completely solo material but this was ignored. So people would be buying a host of tracks they already had, which would have put a lot of people off buying it. The album was put out at virtually the same time his first Dark Horse album 33 1/3 came into the shops which was not very helpful. At this time George had crossed swords with A & M records over a delay over 33 1/3. Warner Brothers came to his aid. He also had the My Sweet Lord / He's So Fine court case to deal with, which might have been the reason George did not wipe the floor with E.M.I. I agree with John's disappointment of lack of bonus tracks on both Apple and Warner Bros sets, but what made it for me with The Dark Horse Years was the CD of videos to several of his singles including the hilarious courtroom video for This Song. Only George could have the originality and audacity to put out a single and video about this rather stressful episode. Olivia and Dhani, please listen to the fans. We are not out to get you, but many, including John can be helpful and supportive with projects concerning the legacy of this gracious and humble man.

Great video, incidentally I love the cover of I Don't Wanna Do It!. With regard to pricing the ATMP 5 cd on first impression does seem a tad ott at £108.99 although as I so love ATMP I have pre ordered. I will hold judgement until I receive it, however I believe the box is 7 inches which will make the 56 page book quite small. In contrast I pre ordered the Plastic Ono Band deluxe and got it for £85, which is a larger box, 6 cd's, 2 blu rays, large book, posters. postcards, two insets, and is very well packaged and a quality item. I hope the 5cd set of ATMP is on the same build, time will tell!

This is long... Agreed about "Best of Dark Horse". Personally, I wanted a "Dark Horse Singles" comp. They missed so many singles on Dark Horse Records by George. AND, I would also want to put the "Single Versions" if available. Songs like "It's what you Value" (Single Version), Teardrops (Single Version), or even the Japan-only single "Dream Away". (No Single Version) Most of the missed singles (to me) are masterpieces! Also, I don't like the labels on the newest Apple CDs. Why not make them the original label from the album? So weird. John Lennon's are even worse. Give me a green Apple or whatever the label was ORIGINALLY would be perfect. AND, the "Let It Roll: Songs By George Harrison" CD appears to be mostly Dhani & Olivia's favorite tracks. I don't like the title. Too confusing. Why? A million better titles out there and no explanation as to why it's called that. May I suggest simply "Songs By George Harrison"?. On that CD they missed early killer singles like "Ding Dong", "Dark Horse" (Preferably Promo Single Versions?), The song "You" is a must. "This Guitar"! (Single Version, of course) I guess it's all taste just like all music. But it's always fun to hear what your opinion is. I thank you for all the work you do John.

The George Harrison reissue policy is very poor compared to what you get from Lennon, McCartney and especially Dylan. They missed the chance to bring Somewhere in England as George wanted it in the Dark Horse year box, the remaster of Dark Horse is dreadful. Why are there three Beatles songs on the best of that came out some years ago? Just because it's from the Bangla Desh concert? Early takes Volume 1 is an overpriced joke when there is no Volume 2,3 and so on. I hope All things must pass 50 is the starting point for a more caring, better sounding strategy of his Solo work. It's so much worth it to give his music what it deserves. And of course to fair prices. The Harrison estate should follow what the Lennon estate and McCartney does.

I'm tired of buying the same music over again. I buy used stuff from eBay when it's reasonable.

That's some great information. You're right, EMI did George an injustice on the best of George Harrison. They should have consulted him first and there was a wealth of solo material that could have used. I'm planning on getting the 3 disc vinyl copy of ATMP in August. I'm going to wait and see if the price drops on the 5 CD set. I'm really interested in hearing the remixed unspectorized version.
