- Alois Diethelm is considered the last tree ladder maker in Switzerland
Alois Diethelm-Signer from Sattel has been producing tree ladders for fruit crops for 60 years. In 1966, he took over the business for the ladder maker Josef Nussbaumer in Sattel, from whom he learned the trade. He is considered the last of his guild. Together with one employee he used to make up to 300 ladders a year. Today he makes only 40 of them. This is partly due to the change in agriculture. Fruit cultivation has declined and in the past cherries used to grow mostly on high trunk trees. That is why his tree ladders, which can be up to twelve metres, are needed less and lesser.
To build his ladders Alois Diethelm uses entire poles from young spruce trunks. The rungs are made of hardwood. For the sake of better stability, the ladders are built conically. This conical construction leads to a lower centre of gravity, provides more safety and makes positioning the ladder to the tree easier. Fruit pickers particularly appreciate the unique handiness and durability of his tree ladders.
In the past, Alois Diethelm built together with an employee at least one ladder a day, and his two sons also helped. Twenty years ago, the demand steadily decreased. Today he does manufactures alone and his wife supports him. Alois Diethelm is retired and still does it because he enjoys it.

A beautiful and heartwarming story. Best wishes to Aloïs and his wife. May their ladder be long.
Many thanks for your kind words. They will be very pleased to read your wishes. With best regards from Switzerland.
Very nice. A man who loves his work and a customer that appreciates his product. The world needs more of this.
Thank you very much for your kind words. Highly appreciated. With the very best regards from Switzerland.
Man you hit the nail right ON the head with that one. With all the money chasing these days, people have lost touch with the fact that there is NO better, more solid ground on which to stand than taking pride in your work and the quality and consideration you provide to others.

I can't get over how light weight and confidence inspiring these ladders are. I've been up a few tall ladders in my time and these look superb.
I just hope someone takes this skill up as a craft hobby because enough of the traditional skills have already been lost. We are all poorer for that.
Gorgeous, all the best.
Thank you so much for your kind comment. These represent indeed a fabulous weight to stability performance. Nothing beats a naturally grown resource. With best wishes from Switzerland.
@@AlainHospenthal I framed houses for many years in the states and then went on the other carpenter work later in life, I cannot tell you enouth how awesome these ladders would be to work with. Keep up the good work and best wishes from Iowa, Alain!
Why do I get the feeling this man and his wife could teach so many people today what's really important in life. I love the dedication not only to the craft but also towards each other. Makes me proud to know my Homestead is somewhere in the Swiss Countryside and sad I will probably never visit.

What an incredible Man and his wife. I love the fact he still makes these ladders. These skills will all be lost in another generation or two. More importantly it appears the pride in the craftsmanship is also disappearing. Thank you for making this video available for the world to watch.

".. in 1 or 2 gens"? When he passes, this skill will be lost, though because he has made this video, it may be "rediscovered" at some future date
He does everything pretty much by sight and feel…roller plane just on one side of the bottom to the board
It is so nice to see husband and wife working so happily. The love he puts into each ladder is admirable. This real talent and skill is what must be preserved. ASMR video. God bless you and your wife Alois. Any vacancies for interns??

Wow! I'm 66 years old and went through an electrical apprenticeship when I was a young man. " Apprenticeship is the nucleus of craftsmanship " was the logo of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. Your craft has been passed on for generations. Please don't let it die. Robots can't replace this. People working and building things with their own hands is what is missing in todays world. It gives us a sense of well being and accomplishment.

Unico inconveniente è più pesante rispetto all'alluminio. Lunga vita al Alois👍👍👍👏👏👏

Hello Mr. van Zuylen, many thanks for your kind feedback. With best regards from Switzerland.

Yes some talk, some live. The past generations where living way more sustainable and apparently also happier. We don‘t need all that stuff. It leads nowhere. Consumerism is the greatest plague this planet has ever faced. With our best wishes from Switzerland.
Incredible old school craftsmanship, very interesting intricate details that make a difference in performance & ultimately safety. I would of assumed that rift or quatersawn stock free of pith from large straight grained log would of been the most ideal stock for the runners but this does not appear to be the case. I imagine using smaller sapling type stock gives the ladder more flexibility that the heartwood would not exhibit.
Yes correct. Logs are chosen by their size in view of the final height of the ladder and they need to be of slow grown wood with as few piths as possible. Many thanks for your interest. Kind regards from Switzerland.
@Alain Hospenthal Thank you for the video and the reply, it's knowledge like this that will lost within a generation unless the younger generation gets off their phones/computers and chooses to learn crafts. I'm a young guy here in Florida that runs 2 sawmills and millwork on my farm. Best Regards.

Great story wonderful couple working together to create beautiful useful ladders. I live in the United States in Eastern Washington state. We have hundreds of orchards here growing a variety of fruit. I'm retired and still young. Always love woodworking and I was wondering if you could ask Mr Deithelm if the timber we have here would make good ladder material. We have Western Larch locally calls Tamarack and Douglars fir. The larch grow really tall straight and symmetrical. We have harsh winters so the growing season is short. The Douglas fir also grows slowly but not as symmetrical as the Larch. We have a wood strength chart here called the western span chart. Western larch is the strongest followed by Douglas fir.I would love to start building ladders here for fun and a little side money. Most of all I like meeting new people and love interacting with farmers. Any reply would be greatly appreciated. For the past few years I have been learning traditional timber framing with mortise and tenon joints and white oak pegs. The ladder building process you just showed really appeals to me. Thank you.
Hello Mr. Stack, thank you for your message and your interest in this film. Mr. Diethelm always used spruce to build his ladders. We also have larches growing in Switzerland, especially at higher altitudes, which are more difficult to access. Logging them is more costly and they are rarer than spruce, that is why spruce is used I could imagine that larch would also be suitable, as it is very similar to spruce. The logs need to be straight and slow grown, which is the case with larch as it grows in colder environment. Also it should as free from piths as possible. The sprouts on the other hand need to be made of hardwood, such as ash or beech. With kind regards from Switzerland.

In the UK when I was a youngster in the 60s you often saw what was called a pole ladder on building sites, usually to get up onto scaffolding, not seen any for a long time, a shame this craft will be lost to time moving on, all that knowledge lost, but it's preserved on here now at least.
Thank you Mr. Behr for sharing your story. Indeen we used to have the same here in the past. With best regards from Switzerland.
a fit man and woman for their age my wife has also helped me in my wood work shop makes for a great life between two people share everything
Thank you for sharing your beautiful family memories. A great team can accomplish everything. Kind regards from Switzerland.

Thank you for sharing about your upcoming visit to Basel. Mr. Diethelm also delivers his ladder to the Basel areau (Basel-Land), since there are also many cherry trees there. Kind regards and best wishes.

Merçi pour votre message. Celà nous fait beaucoup plaisir. Meilleures salutations.
Merci,meilleurs salutations à vous aussi 🤓👍
This film affected me on many levels. Craftsmanship, marital harmony, community and so much more. I often fear the world is becoming drab, uniform and grey but this reassures me that there are still nice people and places where a simpler, more honest and wholesome way of life still exists.
Many thanks for your kind reply. Your lines mean a lot us us and we think many people feel the same. We send you our very best wishes from Switzerland.
Absolutely, loved this production. Being a tool guy, I appreciate the mix of old tools with new. It's fascinating how a skinny tree can be turned into a needed orchard tool, used to reap a cherry harvest. Cherry cider is the best! All the best from Montana to Alois and his wife.
Thank you for your kind comment. Yes, these ladders are unique as they really make use of the original strength of the tree, as it grew, providing the same to a new purpose, carrying a similar amount of weight. Our very best wishes and many thanks for watching.
LO BONITO EN TODAS PARTES DEL MUNDO EXISTEN , SALUDOS DESDE GUADALAJARA , MÉXICO .
También saludos cordiales a México desde Suiza. Gracias por su interés en esta película.
danke, allen beteiligten, fuer den grossartigen film.
schade dass dieses handwerk aussterben wird.

Herzlichen Dank für ihre freundliche Rückmeldung. Wir grüssen aus der Zentralschweiz.
I had no idea it was a separate craft.
I am from the Czech countryside and here until a few years ago it was common to make exactly such a ladder at home when needed. It does not require tools that every farmer does not have at home. We only did the planing and sanding by hand.
But it is true that today we already have aluminum ladders at home. Progress cannot be stopped.
That is true, we also used to have farmers who made such ladders here, but now Mr. Diethelm is the last one. Thank you for sharing your story from Czech republic. With our best wishes from Switzerland.
Der gute Alois. Wir haben noch zwei Leitern von ihm. Die sind schon 30 Jahre alt. Grüße aus Goldau😊
Grüsse von nebenan 😀
Beautiful video, and wood tree ladder.
Thank you very much. With kind regards from Switzerland.
Awesome video, thanks 🙌🙌👍👌😊🙏🍀
Many thanks for your kind comment. Highly appreciated.
I want one! How much is shipping to the states? 😂
Many thanks for your interest. You are welcome to take one home as a souvenir on the occasion of your next visit to Switzerland. Kind regards. We trust this finds you in good health and great happiness.
One of the best craftsmanship on RUclips
Thank you very much indeed Sir.
