  • Alois Diethelm is considered the last tree ladder maker in Switzerland
Alois Diethelm-Signer from Sattel has been producing tree ladders for fruit crops for 60 years. In 1966, he took over the business for the ladder maker Josef Nussbaumer in Sattel, from whom he learned the trade. He is considered the last of his guild. Together with one employee he used to make up to 300 ladders a year. Today he makes only 40 of them. This is partly due to the change in agriculture. Fruit cultivation has declined and in the past cherries used to grow mostly on high trunk trees. That is why his tree ladders, which can be up to twelve metres, are needed less and lesser.
To build his ladders Alois Diethelm uses entire poles from young spruce trunks. The rungs are made of hardwood. For the sake of better stability, the ladders are built conically. This conical construction leads to a lower centre of gravity, provides more safety and makes positioning the ladder to the tree easier. Fruit pickers particularly appreciate the unique handiness and durability of his tree ladders.
In the past, Alois Diethelm built together with an employee at least one ladder a day, and his two sons also helped. Twenty years ago, the demand steadily decreased. Today he does manufactures alone and his wife supports him. Alois Diethelm is retired and still does it because he enjoys it.

I can't get over how light weight and confidence inspiring these ladders are. I've been up a few tall ladders in my time and these look superb.

    • @AlainHospenthal
      @AlainHospenthal  Год назад +1

Incredible old school craftsmanship, very interesting intricate details that make a difference in performance & ultimately safety. I would of assumed that rift or quatersawn stock free of pith from large straight grained log would of been the most ideal stock for the runners but this does not appear to be the case. I imagine using smaller sapling type stock gives the ladder more flexibility that the heartwood would not exhibit.

    • @AlainHospenthal

Great story wonderful couple working together to create beautiful useful ladders. I live in the United States in Eastern Washington state. We have hundreds of orchards here growing a variety of fruit. I'm retired and still young. Always love woodworking and I was wondering if you could ask Mr Deithelm if the timber we have here would make good ladder material. We have Western Larch locally calls Tamarack and Douglars fir. The larch grow really tall straight and symmetrical. We have harsh winters so the growing season is short. The Douglas fir also grows slowly but not as symmetrical as the Larch. We have a wood strength chart here called the western span chart. Western larch is the strongest followed by Douglas fir.I would love to start building ladders here for fun and a little side money. Most of all I like meeting new people and love interacting with farmers. Any reply would be greatly appreciated. For the past few years I have been learning traditional timber framing with mortise and tenon joints and white oak pegs. The ladder building process you just showed really appeals to me. Thank you.

Hello Mr. Stack, thank you for your message and your interest in this film. Mr. Diethelm always used spruce to build his ladders. We also have larches growing in Switzerland, especially at higher altitudes, which are more difficult to access. Logging them is more costly and they are rarer than spruce, that is why spruce is used I could imagine that larch would also be suitable, as it is very similar to spruce. The logs need to be straight and slow grown, which is the case with larch as it grows in colder environment. Also it should as free from piths as possible. The sprouts on the other hand need to be made of hardwood, such as ash or beech. With kind regards from Switzerland.

I had no idea it was a separate craft.
I am from the Czech countryside and here until a few years ago it was common to make exactly such a ladder at home when needed. It does not require tools that every farmer does not have at home. We only did the planing and sanding by hand.
But it is true that today we already have aluminum ladders at home. Progress cannot be stopped.

That is true, we also used to have farmers who made such ladders here, but now Mr. Diethelm is the last one. Thank you for sharing your story from Czech republic. With our best wishes from Switzerland.
