Believe it or not, the Vice Admiral was probably the only reason anything got done, because describing the crew of these ships as “randos” doesn’t quite cover it. These were peasant conscripts from inland, many of whom had NEVER SEEN THE OPEN OCEAN. No wonder they were so freaked out all the time.

When I did my military service in the early 90s, we had the first official fleet visit from Russia after the cold war. They came with a Krivak III missile cruiser to Tromsø. There was to be a laying down of a wreath on the war memorial on May 17th(our constitution day, which we celebrate instead of our independence on June 7th) by a Russian Vice Admiral, so protocol required a 48-man guard of honour. Our coastal fort was the only navy unit with any real number of soldiers around(our now defunct Coast Artillery was administratively part of the Navy), so we were to mount half the guard, while the Russians mounted the other half. My platoon was deemed best in close order drill, so we were sent to Tromsø, while the other platoon was sent to the local town to participate in the parade there.
At the laying down of the wreath we did the whole guard spiel with "present arms", etc. with blanco'd webbing and gaiters, while the Russian guards did nothing else but slap their heels together. Afterwards we got to got to see their ship and I talked to one of my platoon members who had been there since the day before in a meet-and-greet with some of the Russian crew. Only the officers spoke any English, and one of them asked him which songs we sang to keep warm during the winter(!).
When we visited their ships we noted that some had a decoration in the form of a ship on their chest, and when we asked what it was, they told us it was for completing a 6-month cruise in the arctic, but the decoration was only given to those that had distinguished themselves during the cruise.

What's really ironic is how many parallels there are between this expedition and Putin's invasion of Ukraine: Arrogant, delusional belief that Russia was a mighty, invincible power facing a pathetically weak opponent. Poorly trained and unmotivated crews. Outmoded and poorly maintained equipment. Huge logistical problems. Serious communication issues. Complete miscalculation of the international ramifications of the expedition. One of the consequences of Russia losing the Russo-Japanese war was that the Czar lost a lot of credibility and that contributed to his fall a few years later. One can only hope that bit of history will repeat as well.

"Riley Ace of Spies" is an excellent series on early 20th century espionage. There is a segment on Port Arthur. Part of the Russian fleet had a ship carrying all the pay money for the military, in gold. This ship was sunk in the battle, and was found again in 2018, 200 tons of gold coin and bullion, or 9.6 billion dollars today. Not BitCoin in 1905.

Russians were using an explosive compound that was reliable in use but terrible in storage, so by the time they arrived to Tsushima Straight, a third of their ammo stores were duds. Meanwhile, the Japanese were using a different compound that stored well but wasn’t as reliable in use, and a number of their shells went off in the barrels
