    Admiral Rozhestvensky doesn't get portrayed in a very fair way here. He was pretty much the only sane and competent man in the entire fleet, so he had many, MANY good reasons to throw his binoculars overboard. He was also very pessimistic (and realistic) about their chances right from the beginning.

      The poor man almost *welcomed* capture by the Japanese.

      That makes the story even funnier!
      Just one competent leader surrounded by idiots.
      Sounds like a 90s comedy

      The fact that this HASN'T been made into a dark comedy a la Death of Stalin is a travesty.

      And after the war was over, he took full responsibility at the Court Martial even though he was knocked unconscious at the beginning of the battle and his second in command was the one who surrendered. It was his testemony that made the Czar commute all the death sentences of the junior officers that were found guilty of dereliction of duty.

    Drachinifel's longer and more in-depth explanation of this mess (including part 2 about the Battle of Tsushima) remains one of the most dumbfoundingly entertaining pieces of documentation on YT.

      Or as Rozesvinsky (or however you spell it, something Slavic) called her, "the lecherous slut." When captured by the Japanese he asked if the Kamchatka still sailed. Upon hearing that it sank, he sighed in relief, laid back down on the stretcher, and thanked God that it was at the bottom of the ocean.
      He would die of a heart attack four years later, I can only imagine somebody offhandedly said the word "Kamchatka" and he had a stress-induced heart attack.

    This might be where the ~17% literacy rate of Russia in 1910 comes into play.

      That and a majority of the population of the Russian Empire didn’t actually speak Russian.

    It should be noted that, at the time, the actually experienced Russian Naval personnel were in the Black Sea Fleet.

    • @TheGallantDrake
      @TheGallantDrake 8 месяцев назад +5

      If I recall, they wanted to send the experienced personnel by rail to Port Arthur, but hadn’t counted on losing the land war so fast.

      Yeah, the Russians considered the Black Sea to be more important than the Baltic.
