- This is John Denver singing two songs about war in 1969 at the Nowhere Coffeehouse in Cincinnati, Ohio, Two Little Boys (begins at 00:45) & Last Night I Had the Strangest Dream (begins at 04:39) - both have been my long-time favorites.
I've uploaded my own cover of 'Two Little Boys' at • Two Little Boys - John... - great song to sing; if you want to learn JD's signature guitar intro, you can watch my cover video, which shows how to play the intro licks. Chords and lyrics to the song can be found at ddpro.ucoz.com/....
I know there have been videos of John Denver singing 'Two Little Boys' on RUclips before, but I believe my copy has superior sound quality. And none of them have the marvelous introduction John gave before singing the song.
'Two Little Boys' was made famous by Rolf Harris, whose version is, in my opinion, not at all as impressive as John's.
My grandfather loved this song - he (Joe) and his brother, Jack, served through WWI, in the same battalion. Both survived, and remained very close for the rest of their lives, but Jack's life was shortened by gas injuries.
Very beautiful version of this song. So melancholy but such a lovely sentiment to it.
I have known the song of Two Little Boys for most of my life. I learned it in summer camp about 40 years ago in the North Georgia mountains. This song always stuck to my heart. Many years passed... I spent 25 years living in NY and being urbanly busy... then I started caring for a beautiful little girl while I was in between jobs... I did not know many songs to sing to her, but my tired old managed to pull this one out of somewhere. I used to sing it to her (that and Baby Boats) every time she needed some personal time, some hugs, some human contact, some old school love... I see her rarely now, she is forgetting me, but one day I visited and started this song, and she joined in. She knew every word! She had been listening when she was an infant and she remembered. She came up in my thoughts tonight and I decided to search for the song because I realized that for over 40 years I had only sung it in my head or alone to a baby. I thought maybe I could use You Tube to see if others remembered it and how they were singing it. Much to my joy I found this version by John Denver, one of my favorite singers. Funny, this has been out there all those years and for me, it finally all came together. I thank little Baby E. for keeping this song in my heart and I will always hold it there for her until I can spend more time with her. I know this is a long comment, but I thought people might enjoy understanding how the legacy of this song is traveling through the digital age.
That was very special Elizabeth. Has always been with me.🌈🌈
I first learned the song as a girl attending Camp Juliette Low as well, and like you I spent most of my adult life singing it only to myself before ever thinking to look on RUclips for it. ❤️
The most beautiful version of Two Little Boys ever recorded 🌻
Me dad sang this to me when I was young and it brings back some deep memories of laughter and sorrow.
Thanks dad.
Makes me cry for my dad
Two little boys... wistful song. He narrates this song, his singing gives the song a sense that it is being performed. I heard the difference between brothers. Jack and Joe as i would in a script or short story. His phrasing was that clear-cut. This is high quality audio. The guitar playing rich and warm throughout. His voice is tender in "The Strangest Dream" like a thread of a dream you want so badly to remember, to come true but won't materialize in your mind...
The 2nd song is so bizarre and poignant as it points out a subconscious desire for peace but heartbrokenly acknowledges war and devastation as inevitable, like the disruption of a dream.
What a heartfelt rendition ...such a wonderful voice!!
My grandmother sang this to us when I was a child in the 1950's. I believe she sang it to her kids.
Momma used to sing this to me and my Brother over sixty years ago. Tears are falling!
Such beauty and sadness that he put in this song
Wow... Never heard this one! Awsome as ALL his song's Are!!!!!!
Nina M it’s actually a number one by Rolf Harris a convicted pedophile of course not at the time John covered him but later on the extent of his crimes where revealed regardless it’s a pretty good song
This songs older then me its basicley a war song
I never heard the song Two Little Boys... but I have heard that other song Last Night I Had the Strangest Dream. Both of these are really good and bring a lot of emotions. Thank you for sharing them... God bless you... :)
Rolf Harris has a big no.1 hit with this in the UK in 1969, he opted for giving what he called a dull slow uncommercial old folk song a breath of fresh air and he was right.
Had not Rolf had a huge hit with it, other singer's would never have looked for and did a version of the original..
Same with the folk song " freight train" turned into a world wide skiffle hit in 1957, everyone assuming they'd written it themselves and it turning out to be an obscure 20 year old American folk song, hence a renewed interest in the original version..
Again Lonnie Donegal's rock island line, an obscure unheard of old song, made popular by updating it and having a worldwide hit in 1956
Definitely the best quality I've heard for Two Little Boys, and your own cover was wonderful too - thank you so much for uploading both xxx
I thougt it was a british song and not about the civil war you know anything about that?
The way Two Little boys should be sung ❤
On my Mom’s side they were Irish immigrants who filtered down into New England from Canada before a few of their children went down and settled in modern day West Virginia. By 1861 there were two brothers living in Virginia. One married a woman much above his station.A beautiful southern belle. His father in law was a slaveholder. The other moved home to Massachusetts to pursue a career on the rail road. At Bull Run, one wore Blue and the other wore Gray. By Appomattox, The Gray was resting in an unmarked grave near Sayler’s Creek. The Blue was marching home to Boston. And according to family legend, he stopped off in Huntington WV to search for his long lost rebellious brother.
A beautiful song that makes me so angry at how lives are wasted by war.
Beautiful folksy rendition
With i new John Denver sang it
Couldn't play this song at my dad's funeral because Rolf Harris was a bad man
True dat.
@@AntonGully hi
Not a big problem; Rolf didn't write the song. It was written by Theodore Morse
Was this song, "Two Little Boys" ever released on any of John Denver's albums?
Also, was this song performed at the Nowhere Coffehouse released on a album from that coffeehouse on a CD? Or only vinyl?
This is the song from trainspotting, that spud sings after tommy's death-
TheUrzur written by Rolf Harris the Australian entertainer who was tried and convicted for sexually assaulting many girls (one as young as age 8) for decades.
No. It was written in 1902 I believe. Sang years before that slag was born.
