1. The original track was released in 1993. 2. Anupama Krishnaswami, the original track singer, was magnificent. 3. This rendition is incredible, and this track actually tops the original with the musical arrangement and orchestration. 4. Suresh peters did the chorus in the original, and his voice was mesmerizing. 5. Neeti Mohan sang it to perfection, perhaps also added her style and charisma.
To each their own, but no way this was better than the original. Neeti Mohan did a fab job but Anupama's effortless singing was several notches superior than Neeti Mohan's forced Shakira-esque singing. Orchestration and sound of this version pales in comparison to the grandeur of the original composition. I grew up listening to 90s ARR songs, so hard to convince me that anything can beat his 90s studio recorded versions.
It's like Neeti saying to other singers "hold my drink" back in 5 minutes of singing. I never thought somebody could sing that like anupama. Both awesome
We Indians especially from Tamilnadu Chennai should be proud and blessed by music guru like ARR, illayaraja, MSV , 3 legends took the music from carnatic to western. I was a freshman at the Univ staying at the hostel when this movie/album was released. I remember there was absolute silence in the mess hall as we all tried to digest this amazing music that was so different from the usual Illyaraja tunes that were beamed in the hall. Absolutely mesmerizing then as it does to me today!

No, its not an exact copy...the singing was different at certain places and its missing the emotional intensity and vocal power of the original artist. But Neeti did an excellent job regardless and she's a very watchable performer.

I just discovered Neeti Mohan and I am very thankful for that! She's great BUT I feel like her voice doesn't suit this song at all. Her vocals are too tender, softening the higher belts of the song and she dodged that G5 at the end with that "falsetto"😓....however she's got a great voice. Hats off to that!
The beauty of this song is the job of sound engineer who has done an excellent work. In a live show it's difficult to balance such huge number of musicians with quality output. Thanks to ARR for composing such an electrifying song and special thanks to sound engineer of this show again.

It was during 1993s, that i was in my 3rd/4th std and we went to watch Tiruda Tiruda Telugu version (could be dubbed, don't remember now) and I slept almost throughout the movie as I couldn't understand any bit of Telugu/Tamil, except songs, songs very fresh, transporting you to other worldly world and fire! A.R.R's magical era had begun! For me, this version is far better as it sounds more improvised! Fine wine! This is fire, I mean Neeti Mohan's performance is beyond sheer brilliance! A r rahman's concerts have a screen in front of the stage at some distance which displays the lyrics to the singer on the stage.
