Reciting licks? Musical stream of consciousness? The same old stuff vs new on-the-spot ideas? Whatever it is it's always a challenge to sit and just play. I try to play complete thoughts and have a pulse going throughout. How do you like to improvise?
    Drums are Yamaha PHX
Snare is Dunnet titanium with re-enforcement hoops
    Cymbals are Zildjian

Really fun to see you turn it loose a bit. I've always enjoyed watching your spots. The only thing missing is a table side visit with Mr. Traditional Grip at the House of Drumming.

Classy! Extremely musical and “listenable” solo, Steve. I think you capture so much attention because so many of us want to play this way. So much feel and groove, yet you’ve got the fireworks too. Thanks for the inspiration!

Steve, your tribute to Neil led me here (of COURSE I has to watch "Open Drum Solo Madness" first!) ...all I can say is that I'm blown away by your playing. So musical and fluid. Your drums sound fantastic, as well. Kudos- and thanks. You have a new follower.

    This is incredible.
I don’t surf RUclips to ‘study the greats’ (no pun intended, I know there’s a video series for that trash). I only try to find inspiration. And this is amazing; this is what my heart beats and what my brain attempts to translate when I playing.
Now I’m going to surf your page and see what else is inspiring.
    Thank you

Fantastic, Steve! One thing: Angle 1 (left) was not necessary. Angle 2 (right) shows more. Instead a totally different second angle would have been great.

The sound of your drums and playing is very inspiring. 1:38 -2:02 - I would like a lesson or two from you. More on the not losing the pulse while playing different phrases. I will be out of the country until 8/6/19. Please advise of your schedule and how to contact you. Thanks.

    Fantastic stuff, as usual.
I'd seriously love a video more about how to develop the building blocks to freely create these kinds of linear phrases and fills. There are definitely some spots in there where I can tell it was a "lick" you had rehearsed at some point (definitely caught The Carlock Lick in there a few times), but most of the time it doesn't seem that way. Did you develop this kind of vocabulary by collecting licks, or was there something more fundamental you worked on that allows these ideas to come out spontaneously? Sometimes I feel like I'm wasting time practicing a specific lick - it's cool to have that lick in my pocket, but I would much rather feel like I am expressing myself more spontaneously and freely instead of stringing together rehearsed licks. How would you recommend developing this kind of vocabulary? Is there a good practice routine that worked for you? I could just start making up random phrases and practicing them until they're internalized, but I can't help but wonder if there's a more efficient way to develop this style of playing.
I'd love to see you touch on this topic, as I really trust your input and experience. You've clearly done a lot of work to get where you are, and I have tons of respect for your playing!
Keep up the amazing content, man. I have gained so much from each and every one of your videos.

Fantastic stuff Steve! Something that viewers might find interesting is a lesson on odd groups in 1/16's (or triplets) like you do a bit at 2:53.
Repeated combinations over the bar line in say, two-bar phrases is great for "opening up the ear". Start with doubles in eighth-note triplets worked up to groups of 5's and 7's in sixteenth notes. Just a thought... I'd love to see what you could do with it!

Hey Steve. Your playing is very inspiring. Your left hand technique is incredible. What do you most attribute to it, Moeller technique or just your way of developing it naturally?
