I’m really struck my how good an actor Michael Forest is. Other than the indomitable Commodore Decker, this is the best guest acting I’ve ever seen on TOS. And he was again stunning in Star Trek Continues.
"Who Mourns for Adonais" is one of my personal favorites because I love Greek mythology. I especially like the special effects (Apollo's hand reaching out in space and seizing the Enterprise; Apollo growing to giant size; and at the end, the Enterprise's phasers destroying Apollo's temple)! The music was epic too. It was heard again once more in "Whom Gods Destroy".
They actually did a very similar episode in The Animated Series with a Mayan god, Kukulkan, who also expected humans to still worship him. "TAS: How Sharper Than a Serpent's Tooth"
In my younger days, my friend and I might have riffed the scene where he grew giant. "Oh, Sweet Lord, he went commando, AHHHHH!!!!!" sorry.☺️ (we were both fans of the old Star Trek and MST3K, sometimes we just had to)
Honestly they should redo this Episode and let Apollo "win" by Enterprise either escaping somehow or them distracting him with some type of God-Level villain or hero ?🥰 This is soo simmilar to the Zeus in Rick in Morty than grew Giant.
We don't know how he spent those 5,000 years, Pat, just as we don't know if time, for Apollo, ran at the same rate as it does for us. Remember: he had the power of a 'god', he was alien, and he possessed technology beyond our understanding. On that basis alone, one should assume nothing...especially where sitting around in a chair is concerned.
The best scene of the episode is when Apollo is telling Carolyn of the downfall of the Olympians. "Even for a god, there is a point of no return. Hera was first. She stood at the edge of the temple, spreading herself upon the wind. Thinner and thinner, until only the wind remained." The dialogue combined with the musical score made the scene quietly epic.
It sort of ties in the Star Trek Continues series where Athena disappears from an aged Apollo's hands after he life energy dissipated. Forest delivered a fine performance.
"KIRK: Give me your hand. Your hand. (she does) Now feel that. Human flesh against human flesh. We're the same. We share the same history, the same heritage, the same lives. We're tied together beyond any untying. Man or woman, it makes no difference. We're human. We couldn't escape from each other even if we wanted to. That's how you do it, Lieutenant. By remembering who and what you are. A bit of flesh and blood afloat in a universe without end. The only thing that's truly yours is the rest of humanity. That's where our duty lies. Do you understand me? "
Yes, Pilgrim of Eternity I believed it was called. I enjoyed watching the show. I would have loved it had they had a series based on all 12 Constitution class Star ships. Star Trek Continues was a good series.
Several of their episodes brought back actors from the original series. The film Star Trek: Of Gods and Men brought back the original Charlie Evans and the Guardian of Forever.
One of my favourite episodes loved this one "If you wanna play god and call yourself Apollo that's your business but your not god to us mister" such an epic comeback.
Agreed! They re-created the set of the Enterprise so realistically that the production company in charge of STAR TREK told them to stop producing the show, which was a shame. All the episodes in S.T.C. were so good, they could have been considered a fourth season of the original series! Plus having James Doohan's son playing the role his father originated didn't hurt as well!
@@davidyoung5114shame really. The production co. should have remove the stick for their ass and let them continue but they clearly didn’t want someone doing Trek better:

This episode came out years before Erich Von Daniken's "Chariots of the Gods," but it's never mentioned. This episode created a real theory before it was mainstream. Well done.
Egyptologists and cosmologists rejected it as well as Roddenberry. Glen A. Since the latter was a devil-figure I consider it a lie, but a later series implies it was true.

@@kentshelton3451 Always reminded me of the score of movies like Cpt Horatio Hornblower of the 50s. The Age of Sail exploits of navy frigates and fictionalised tales such as Hornblower and O'Brian's Aubrey (of Master and Commander) partially inspired Roddenberry to create Star Trek. The 5 year mission to go where no man has gone before, like the old ships of sail did not that long ago. In the 50s these stories became popular again, around the time Roddenberry was young. There's actually a webcomic with a somewhat similar concept to this episode, called Wayward Sons: Legends. In that webcomic, both the Greek and Egyptian Gods were aliens who crash landed on Earth due to a freak accident involving a powerful object called the Star Core, gaining their powers in the process. They meet the indigenous humans, who immediately worship them as deities. They even come across the ancient Mesopotamian city of Uruk, where the being whom we know of as Hercules becomes the father of Gilgamesh with the city's queen, Ninsun. While it has not updated in years (there have been many failed attempts to restart publishing of the webcomic), and stopped updating during the middle of a story arc, it is definitely worth the read if you want a more sci-fi twist to classic Greek, Egyptian, and even Mesopotamian Mythology. Eagle-eyed readers will also notice a reference to Star Trek in one of the pages, where one of the characters says, "It is green." So check it out if you ever have the chance!
@@Dumb-Comment Yeah the episode has a somewhat dark ending. They defeat him but regret it, because he really was Apollo ans a huge part of Earth history and he personally knows all the other Greek gods. So basically when Enterprise got home there were a whole bunch of incredulous and very skeptical scolars, shocked at the idea odmf rewriting all their textbooks.

The character of Chekov was created to appeal to younger viewers. Roddenberry intended him to be analogous to Davy Jones of The Monkees and wanted him to have a "foreign" accent. As British would have been too obvious, they made him Russian instead.
I remember being a kid and thinking, hm, he looks like Apollo. 'Star Trek' asked you to check your critical mind, outside your TV room. And the show did a lot to help. It still the same thing, very convincing. Favorite episode is 'Friday's Child.' Those big warrior dudes, with the cool outfits. They lived in these tents, kinda like if Japanese sword culture was in Ireland or something. Kirk had such skill and humility being around Super dudes.

Star Trek was the greatest TV show ever made.
Star Trek, the original series, also had the best cast in television history.
I love how quick Chekhov is with his response
The episode may be awful, but Chekov's "...and I am the Czar of all the Russias!" remains one of my favourite moments in TOS.
LongLiveHumour it's a good episode I think one of the better ones
Awful? This is a great episode. The only bad part is how they beat him.
Noones talking about Checkov's hair??
Yep.
I don't mind how they beat him.
Leslie Parrish, what a beauty.
In the context of this episode, the fact that he really is Apollo is fascinating....
Was he (in the context of the show) or just an imposter?
@@GhostSal he literally is the Apollo
@@Dumb-Comment Yeah the episode has a somewhat dark ending. They defeat him but regret it, because he really was Apollo ans a huge part of Earth history and he personally knows all the other Greek gods.
So basically when Enterprise got home there were a whole bunch of incredulous and very skeptical scolars, shocked at the idea odmf rewriting all their textbooks.
@@GhostSal He really was Apollo.
2:44 - "forced perspective" the dude is standing near the camera while the crew is standing way in the background. To the camera it looks like the guy is super tall while the crew is super fall.
I love how they avoid actually showing him growing by showing that reaction shot. Desilu had a budget of about $200.00 per episode.
I think it was a bit more than $200.00. They had to pay the actors and the crew. $200.00 wouldn't even meet payroll; not even back then.
Add another 0 plus 50,000. Each episode was about 250,000 a piece. It was one of the most expensive shows on the air.
ferociousgumby You called down the thunder...
OpenMawProductions just about every Sci Fi show during that time and in the 80's there after on tv was expensive to produce, Battlestar Galactica and Buck Rodgers in the 21st Century was among them.
Leslie Parrish.....Beautiful...!
The original pulled off all these great episodes with no budget its amazing
He has a great voice.
Loving that fake grass!
real Astro turf
Oh that blue dress 😍
Leslie Parrish one of the most beautiful women of Star Trek .
Absolutely gorgeous girl !!!
Yeoman Barrows (McCoy's would-be) in "Shore Leave" was nothing to sneeze at either.
Love the Ancient Greece music....
Apollo sings with his quintet, the Saturn Five.
😉 Good one !

This couldn't be done today it would be seen as too cheesy. But I still works for me from the old programme.
Today people are extra stupid and movies are mostly turds so I dunno what you talking bout
Yooo, Michael Forest aka Alex Rosewater from Big-O amongst others. He's been in the game for decades. Shout out to a veteran voice and screen actor. He's 91 and still going.
Look at Checkov's hair, cripey LOL
The character of Chekov was created to appeal to younger viewers. Roddenberry intended him to be analogous to Davy Jones of The Monkees and wanted him to have a "foreign" accent. As British would have been too obvious, they made him Russian instead.
In this generation!!!! In this modern tiiime. In this generation!!! We're gonna make this world shiiine!!!!!
Roteiros, sempre CRIATIVOS. Seriado ATEMPORAL. Fui!!!
Kirk had such skill and humility being around Super dudes.
...a favorite...especially when Apollo is crying and talking to Caroline and his own in the outer realm of humanity... "See what you have done to me...." "Zeus...Athena..." part 2
The ending was strangely sad, seeing him say the rest of them were right that humanity had no need for them anymore as he faded away.
My all time favorite episode.
The ending was great in this episode.
The special effects are awesome, state of the art.
😁
Wow, between Kirk, Mccoy and Chekov there are some serious hairpieces going on.
This must have been the inspiration for Star Trek V.
Michael Forest was really buff for 1967. Apparently some actors did lift weights back then.
Ha! I remember this airing and I was just smiling and thinking it was great to be alive.
He may not be a god, but she is a goddess.
Wasnt she, beautiful woman, not sure who she was.
Yup. :)
there is no doubt Apollo and Carolyn did the nasty more than one once. she can call it research all she wants. what if she, Lt.Polumus, gave birth to this god-bastard in a future episode??
@@shogunate2022 the actress was Leslie Parrish as Lt.Carolyn Polomus, destroyer of gods
@@leilanurena she was beautiful. I remember coming home each day from school to watch the reruns of Star Trek at around 4 pm. On a black and white TV.
Dam now I need to find the entire episode.
"You will worship me".
