Vintage Story is a post-apocalyptic sandbox survival block-like game with Lovecraftian-like themes and a lot of lore. It's in early access and has a ton of options for how to play. It even has a thriving modding community and was built with modding in mind. It can get a bit overwhelming at times to try to undersdtand just how much there is available to you with this game so I've made this video (and others) to help you to understand from the basics to the advanced. If you enjoyed this video, be sure to like, comment, and subscribe if you also want to see more. This video was made using version 1.18.5 of Vintage Story.

It's also important to note that wearing armor will also increase your hunger % rate. So, if you're just in and around the relative safety of your home or just about to sleep to pass the night away, it's usually a good idea to unequip it and not carry things in your off-hand to help lower your satiation needs.
oooo like after a nice long day of work :)
Time to make some armour i guess! (I have my storage full of food)
Ive made it to the copper age for the first time. And i didnt know i could cure pelts without a barrel of lime water!
Now i can go back and make myself a shield, some lamellar armor, and start hunting some real game! I have so many hides already! Now i just need the fat.
Those bears better watch out!
As I've learned in the many hours of playing VS. If you see a bear, your thought process goes "Uh oh." and if there's no deep water immediately around the following tend to be thoughts as it chases you: "Shit! Shit! Shit! Ow! Where the hell is the water?!"
Thanks to bears I also learned how to parkour in VS. It works 50% of the time, but it's better than nothing.
in my current world, the winters get down to almost 18 below at night where my home is - I've had to build my base to be insulated on top of wearing full furs to not freeze at night.
thankfully it's not *quite* cold enough to kill pink apple and pear trees, so i can still get fruits
the main reason I chose to settle at this particular location in spite of multiple forests nearby and the deadly winters is because it's got surface peridotite and there's ample veins of hematite below the ground. because my friends decided to all settle elsewhere but don't have any iron sources nearby their bases im basically in control of the server's iron supply
@@entropic-decay iron man-ager
For some reason I'd thought fur clothes needed to be bought. Could have had mine ages ago! XD
Desperately trying not to get this game, because I know I'll lose countless hours to it. You're not helping, Valen! 😅
Get it, you won't completely regret the lost time.
All work and no play...
Do it.
@@tehNashty It took me two weeks to cave in... playing it right now!

I'm actually skipping handbaskets for a while now, going right for the hunters backpack at the start.
You just need to craft a lot of spears on day 1
Ty for explaining what the heal rate does, cause this whole time i thought it only referred to the passive regen speed.
I didnt test it myself, i just assumed its what it was and didnt think anymore of it.
Im probably early/mid game in regard to progression. I chose gambeson armor for its protection stats compared to that of entry level metals. I already have some iron and am thinking of going striaght to plate. It seems to be the next best "all around" deep dive exploration armor when you consider how much work it takes crafting everything else.
If you want an in-between, you have 2 good options. Chain can later be upgraded to plate so it's good if you get worn out making the materials. This way you have above average armor and can still upgrade it. The second is brigandine. It's a lot cheaper and thus also quicker and easier to make than many and can still offer good protection. The down side is that it can't be upgraded.
Great content. Keep them coming please!
These are fantastic and incredibly helpful for a new player. Very much appreciated sir and keep being awesome!
So helpful! Thank you so much!
You're welcome. :)
Sewing kits can also repair clothes. 75% value and the material cost is just a bit more than that of a piece of linen. Need to be a tailor to make them however. Can also be bought from a trader.
There's a world setting to turn of class requirements for special recipes. You can also do that if you feel you'll enjoy it more.
Great, informative video. Its not called "pillaring" its called "Nerd-polling". 😂
It should be noted that using linen instead of twine basically gives you 10% repair for free.
I just started playing yesterday. I already ate the fat because I was so hungry. OK, lard is off the diet!
Oooooh, is THAT why wolves still basically 2 shot me with leather armor? they're tier 2 damage...and I don't know if that's what the leather is....I was thinking a bout doing iron chainmail, but also...thinking, that I'm getting close to steel. so unsure what I wanna go with.
Is there anything you can do with old, replaced clothing, like that commoner coat that was replaced with the fur one? Or are they doomed to sit in an chest or get tossed into a lake to despawn?
Does the pelt size affect defensive values?
Do animals caught in a pit starve? I just started to play with a friend and she chased some piglets into a small pit and i was wondering if they will grow up or just eventually die for lack of food.
Animals dont die from lack of food, but they do lose weight and have less drops when skinned as a result.
Anyone know why i cant craft the wooden lamellar armor at all just doesnt let me even with all ingredients
Wrong kind of pelt. You need to cure the hide with fat first
@@MischiefofMice thank you ! You are a god send lol I spent so long trying to figure out why it wouldn't work lol love the content btw keep it up just got vintage story a few weeks ago and loving it
Do you know what determines how much durability armor looses from a hit? I can't find any info on this. Is it dependent on how much damage the armor stopped, the armor material, the armor type, ect.
It's armor vs damage tier related.
Please make anothor video about mana and artifice
The what now?
I'm having trouble finding flax. Can someone give me a hint on how to gain high amounts of flax the easiest ways?
Thanks.
If you can find any, plant it asap. Often when harvesting you will get more seeds than you started with.
@@MischiefofMice Just found one. Thanks for the hint!
@@DioBrando-kr8cw I like to make flax farms in the early game and also dig a flat spot underground to harvest drifters. I will use a waterway to force them towards the kill hole.
@@tehNashty I never have gotten Flax fibers from drifters tbh
@@DioBrando-kr8cw I get the feeling that you avoid drifters, especially ones that live deep down. Surface drifters don't drop much, deep drifters sometimes drop flax, the rest drop some and the really bad ones always do.
13:40 they may have patched this out.
I tried doing this before and the game treats it as a player occupying the space and i cant do it
Nah, it's just difficult to time it right, but it is possible. Just make sure you plan this out and be prepared, because the predators don't wait until you build a nerd pole
@uncolored2060 I managed to do it today lol. But yeah my strategy is to run like he'll from Predators and jump. Jump a lot
Use water to slow them down behind me or jump up blocks for that extra half a second it takes for them to do the same lol.
Well... until I declared war on the wolves and bears near my base by generously applying a liberal application of increased gaseous heat to multiple foliages and arbors in an attempt to stem the tide of beasts and gain some visibility.
...
I burned the forest down with a torch. 😂 it worked.... _phenomenally_
Way better than I had expected actually. Lol
@@alexanderrahl7034 is burning stuff safe in this game?
@uncolored2060 you _can_ set stuff on fire.
And that includes your house if it's made of logs or wood. But honestly, unless you're a pro at the game, I doubt you're making your house out of those since it's so resource intensive in the early to mid game. But you can probably protect yourself by building a stone wall or a fire break if you're worried.
I was only minorly concerned about our base when I did it. But we had a stone wall and a moat I dug (because of bears. They can climb up 4 to 5 blocks high) so I figured we would be safe.
I also should point out, i had to light many fires. I was running through setting as many trees and bushes alight as I could, spacing them out every 5 to 10 blocks or so.
When it was over, a huge swathe of the forest was burned, and several families of pigs, wolves, bighorns, and chickens as well as other animals had all died in groups and I harvested their meat. It was really surprising actually. We scrambled like mad to make fires and crocks to cook and preserve it all before it spoiled and we managed to fill almost 10 crocks worth of food.
@@alexanderrahl7034 fun fact: primitive (not really, but them too) people used to burn huge patches of tall grass and bushes for a nice, clean piece of land BEFORE they started building (it was for farms and such, or even for huge villages)
So that's another thing this game is realistic at
Penalties for basic armor is pretty stiff... i mean i know plate was different but these lesser armors wouldnt impair u as much as the game implies. Good armor is rigged to the body making little impact on a healthy male
I'm having the hardest time getting lime from both vendors and in the world. I'm close to making iron and have yet to run into lime or that other resources to make leather. its so frustrating, i might cheat because i kept dying to the smallest breeze due to no viable armor.
