    EFL teacher here.
    I am having a REALLY tough time with students - all levels - lately as it concerns spelling and reading comprehension.
    And the reason for this? All of them became addicted to Google Translator!
    Take kids for instance. They are super fast to understand and use complex softwares but just give them a simple, small dictionary and get ready to see them puzzled! DAMN!

    I'm a native English speaker from the USA and stumbled across this video. I found it very helpful for using an English dictionary and will use what I learned for studying Spanish. Thank you, James!
    And I was thinking this as I was watching the video - how does someone who is just learning English as a second language understand what James is saying? Well, I'm sure James has that figured out.

    •  11 лет назад

      English is my 3rd language, I can understand everything what James speaks but I am not able to communicate. And why? because I am listening English maybe 2/3 hours per day but I communicate in English 30 minutes per week (at most).
      So in my opinion this videos are not for absolute beginners but for pre-intermediate/intermediate who want to learn something new :-)
      Listening is ability which you can train everytime and everywhere unlike the speaking. Especially if you live in small town where nobody use English in the street.

    •  11 лет назад

      ***** Yes it is, sometimes I do it too but if you converse with yourself, you use only words which you know so you can't learn new one, if you tell something wrong you can't correct yourself and so on.
      By the way, I found very useful website where you can communicate with others (usually not native speakers but better than nothing).
      www.verbling.com/community
      By the way, my skype is "onody.zoltan" so if someone want chat, drop me a message. :)

    My favorite dictionary is CALD, Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary. I prefer the CD, as it makes it easier to look up the definitions.

    •  10 лет назад

      Dear Mohamed, what is the difference with the Longman? I use Longman, it has examples bank, despite in general it has just part of grammar, part of international exams, part of vocabulary, ...etc...But it is useful, unless for the examples bank and the audio...Now i'm having problems with my laptop, the audios doesn't work, but I will see what happens... In CALD you have more banks of examples??? Or is it more complete??

    • @MuhammadEgypt
      @MuhammadEgypt 10 лет назад

      Gisella Suárez They're all good dictionaries, but as I said, I prefer CALD. It's a user-friendly dictionary. What do you mean by banks?

    •  10 лет назад +1

      Mohamed Farouk Bank of examples: I mean that there is a group of examples per word, in different contexts, and with the word as noun, verb, etc.

    • @MuhammadEgypt
      @MuhammadEgypt 10 лет назад +1

      Gisella Suárez Yes, Cambridge has numerous examples. In fact, it has examples about almost every term, phrasal verb or idiom.

    •  10 лет назад +1

      I see! It must be a gem! Longman has lots of examples as well! I don't see idioms or phrasal verbs, but is good for teaching primary kids :)

    I was having trouble reading books because I had such a bad vocabulary.I didn't read enough and had other problems in school...Anyways while reading a book I would have to keep pausing every few minutes... to look up the meaning of a particular word.,e.g.,"ostensibly" ,"misconstrue", "duplicity" etc..... but it really helped and sometimes I would just sit there and read the dictionary looking up big words and their meanings.....

    Online dictionaries have word generators. And nobody will have in incentive to just read a dictionary to apply number one which gives you prefixes. So that's why I recommend whenever you read something and you don't understand a word in what your're reading, look it up and find the correct definition. Then apply number 2; make sentences
