Herb Alpert and Sergio Mendes Brasil 66 are the soundtrack of my childhood. Growing up in Mexico City was quite the cosmopolitan experience. My parents must have bought every single vinyl album from both of these artists, and on Saturdays would play them all day long. These sounds are dear to me. Long live Herb 🌿 Alpert and Sergio Mendes! Thank you for all the wonderful music and Joy 🙏🏻
To me, the sound of Brazil ‘66 evokes the mid- to late ‘60s just as much as the Beatles. The sophisticated lounge vibe, the evocation of the samba groove without being true samba, the two front women ... takes you back to an LA cocktail bar in ‘67-‘68.
Wow..forget the comments. These girls were fabulou swhen I first heard them in 1966-67, but they still make my heart sing in 2014. Almost a half century.. Incredible...I miss these kid of smooth, rythmiciful vocals..Occasionally you might hear a new voice, but damn, these kid were classic.. Need I say more?
These ladies voices together (& even alone) were pure magic & beautiful probably beyond words!!! That's the greatness behind Sergio Mendez. SO very sad that so many young people these days are missing out on this. OMG!!!
The incomparable Loni Hall, the most enigmatic beauty of the 1960's. She had such a gorgeous voice and remained distant and mysterious during her whole time with Sergio Mendes.
The name of the song is "For Me" and its one of my many favorite songs by Sergio Mendes. Pink is Lani Hall, Herb Alpert's wife. I love to have found the video of this song!
You know the girl in the pink is Lani Hall and she married Herb Alpert himself! And today Herb is 80 and Lani will be 70 in November and they are still very happily married!
Hi; my name is Brasil and I am 9 years old. I love this song because my Mommy and Daddy named me after the group! Every time I hear this song I thing a kitten is born.!♥♥♥
The music that they play is so beautiful, and now i'm wondering how in the world this group got passed me. Well, i have them now and i will never let go !!!
Okay everyone !!!........trust me when I tell you , I am probably this group's biggest fan ! That said , there needs to be clarity on the group and some of the talent behind it. First of all , Yes Lani is an amazing singer and interpreter of the Brasilian style. Keep in mind that she was "NOT" the only voice behind this incredible sound , the "stunning beauty" by her side in orange is the classy and elegant Janis Hansen who, by the way also had a small spot after her departure with another updated ensemble. It is "she" who sings the lead on their most famous song - "the Look of Love" ! I was extremely annoyed and upset when apparently "Sergio" blew a gasket and fired her and those other "fine" musicians surrounding her simply because they set course to ask for a decent raise ! Unfairly , Lani got to stay ( Herb, of course... don't upset the boss ! ). and the rest were replaced by "clones" that were okay , but certainly not like the original refined troup. Not cool Sergio !!! I have a special place in my heart for the beauty and elegance that Janis alone brought to the group. For me , she was a much better suited partner for Lani then later substitute Karen Phillip. It was clear that from then on, "YES" it would be Lani who would carry the weight of all the lead vocals. That of course she did with great expertise. Don't miss "the Frog" video by them on RUclips. Absolutely gorgeous, with fantastic dancers flanking this super talented original lineup of musicians..... awesome !!!! Rest in peace Janis , her refined sensuality and elegance of vocal delivery are simply unheard of today. "VIVA BRASIL '66" !!!
Still love listening to Brasil 66 and lip synched as this archival footage is, its great to see the group as they appeared in their day and provides wonderful imagery in my mind when I am listening to their music And I do not think any trumpeter has ever made a piece of metal sound as though it were anything but metal so much as Herb was able to do with certain songs over the years, Herb together with Lani are something of an under appreciated American prince and princess story imo.
@@shuroom57 No it's def a lip-play/sync - the audio we're hearing is the exact track from the album. The bass on the track is an upright, but the bass player (Bob Matthews) is here playing an electric that's not even plugged in. :) You can also tell because, as is pointed out in the video, we hear organ on the chorus but Sergio doesn't play it. When we do see him play it in the beginning, he takes his right hand off the piano keyboard, but we can still hear the right hand piano part continuing along with the organ on the track.
HERMOSA MÚSICA, MIS RECUERDOS MÁS ADORADOS AL LADO DE MI PADRE,NOSTALGIA PURA, MAESTRO SERGIO MENDES Y SU BRASIL 66' LA BELLA VOZ INIGUALABLE DE LANI HALL PURA BELLEZA.DESDE MÉXICO,LOS AMO POR SIEMPRE!!💖
@pan68, this track in English is titled "For Me", with lyrics in English by N. Gimbel. However, the original song is titled "Arrastão" in Portuguese and was composed by Edu Lobo and Vinicius de Moraes.
i grew up with this music in the 60's i remember my mother singing out loud i thought at the time she's so uncool....but now i'm glad to have the memories..
In the 1960s I found music like Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass for old people, until I heard Sergio Mendez & Brasil 66, Produced by Herb Alpert. And in the 1980 late disco year I totally rocked my soxx off with Alpert's space agey "Beyond". It's still one of my most favorite "old people" instrumentals.... People change.
Boy that Lani Hall is such a cutie---one can easily understand why Herb Alpert married her. Geez, I grew up with Brasil 66 and all this time I thought the singers were from Brazil and not Chicago. Lani does good "Portugese" though I hear later in life she actually learned the language!
She tells a little bit of her story in her/Herb's new show, and until then I had NO idea until then that she wasn't from Brazil but just a poor Chicago girl (what???) - what an INCREDIBLE talent to be able to pull that off - looks-wise, vocally, linguistically! But the love that still exudes from those two is so beautiful to see 🥰 Have been a Herb Alpert and Sergio Mendes fan all my life - now more than ever!! (they also show some of Herb's art - he's an incredible artist as well! and there's a new documentary out about him that is also definitely worth seeing).
@joannag1610 I am old enough to remember when this album came out in the Spring of 1966. My aunt who lived with us while she went to college bought the album and just played and played it on the okd Symphonic stereo we had ( made of mostly hardwood mahogany and mahogany plywood). You were cool in 1966 if you followed Bassa Nova vack then!
This is blowinmeawayyyyyy Ive always dug Sergio mendez but tonight Ive been picking thru these small diamond nuggets of brief white searing HISTORY and there isn't a word to describe it its like a healing elixir for my brain, this band and the females and the dudes and Sergio with all their energy and restrained poise at the same time makes you really want to shake yer booty. THEY were and are thanks to yutube the true music giants of our time..sogood godblessum.
If you have a chance to see her and Herb in concert (they're still touring together with a small band!), you will want to go! Their show is part music/part history, part love story and all incredible - and her voice is still amazing!
Incomparably talented group of musicians and singers. This is a song that I hardly know, so this is a real treat. Thanks for putting it together . // The reason for the runway is because this was the Hollywood Palace show, as far as I can tell. And as for your annotated video -- it captures the optimistic buoyancy of a special time. Bravo, Billy!
Fabuloso grupo con dos grandes damas cantantes. Algunas de sus canciones están en portugués otras en inglés pero son muy buenas para escucharlas y disfrutarlas más de 50 años después.
These two ladies tore it up with their amazing harmonies. Lani Hall nothing short of a vocal goddess. Herb Albert grabbed the ultimate brass ring in life when they joined up. Love to watch those early videos of Brazil 66. There are moments when Lani looks up to the heavens.. I think in the "Look of Love" and I imagine the connection. Lani if you ever read this thanks for your amazing god given talent.
Agree. I try hard to always stay looking forward, not back....but if anything can cause me to pause and glance back at the past and long for some of those days, its music like this.
Thnx for posting this ..the editing is charming and in the spirit of the cool, breezy somewhat cheesy california of Burt, Herb, Sergio, Lani, the Fifth Dimension and even the Carpenters.
The Brazilian name of this tune is "Arrastão", I believe it's originally by Edu Lobo. Elis Regina has a great version, and so does the Milton Banana Trio. Great tunes!
The lay in orange looks very nice. She definately reminds me of Marlo Thomas-"That Girl" As a fashion designer, I have always liked this hairstyle on a light/white lady or even Brazilian. The model that I use usually wears it like this. Sergio Mendez music is GREAT! I just wish that they would have used more instruments. The lady singers sing very well...his Sirens♥♥

great clip. By the way, there was another organist off to the back left (from audience perspective) who was visible for a second in the first half of the song. This accounts for the extra organ sounds you commented about.
I truly respect and love Sergio Mendes his music and from his bands a lot of Brazilian musicians got a chance to merge into jazz Rock that was happening when the age of the modern virtuoso began. It is kind of puzzling as to why musicians at this level would not play live because no jazz musician would ever go on ho and play sync. I thought the commentary was funny and I thought that what Sergio Mendes did it that time was revolutionary and nobody can take it away. I'm actually trying to learn to play the tambourine right now and I've been watching the videos of this guy and he is amazing
Funny comments; great video. Lani Hall ("Pink") was Sergio Mendes's longtime, wonderful lead singer until she left him to marry - and sing for - Herb Alpert! Alpert had promoted and encouraged the younger Mendes, but Mendes was still pissed that he stole Lani Hall from him!

These two women had the most unique voices and harmonies of the 60s.
Um... There's no harmony. They always sing in unison. That's part of their unique sound.

So "distant and mysterious" that you even got her first name wrong! lol
