Just want to share the things I have found best for passive listening are condensed audio for anime and audio books of books I've read. Of course I have context, have mined the new vocab words, and enjoyed the content enough to finish it. All this combines to reinforce all those mined words by hearing them again and of course train your ear to listen better.

HOT TAKE: Passive listening is at best only slightly effective and at worst a complete waste of time. At least in my experience it was. And when I say passive I mean when you’re completely
Immersed in another task and giving very little/no attention to Japanese.
This made up a huge portion of my immersion 6 months ago and I only started to notice improvements in my
comprehension when I switched to doing mostly active immersion. If it works for others tho I’d say keep doing it.

Good take, there’s 2 kinds of passive listening and the one you’re referring to is completely passive, the kind that helps is when you’re kinda listening but the task is brain dead so like walking your dog or something

Personally i made a seperate youtube channel and set its country to jp and only follow jp videos and sub to jp channels with it so its 100% jp focused on algorythms and usually I watch gaming youtubers who just straight talk to eachother while i have the gameplay to focus on and to help me attempt to understand what they're talking about

Have you heard about subs2cia? It basically does everything you did, but with just one line of command. Also, you can condense the video and the subtitles (resynced) in the process.
For automatic subtitle retiming, I recommend alass.

I love how Japanese learning guid slowly but surely get turned in to a PC-Hacker mode with console, .bat files, folder management and etc. Thank you for sharing !
Also, can I ask you two questions?
Do you know, where is it possible to watch:
    1. Anime with accurate English subtitles (where subs is just telling what is really character saying about, without some kind of changes or adaptation)
    2. Anime with Japanese subs, which is possible to translate into English by clicking on them. (I saw this in one of your videos)

      1) I don't think that that is possible because it is a translation and translation changes
      2) migaku or Language Reactor chrome add ons

I had everything I need and even pasted the .bat file into each of my episode folders, but when I open one of those .bat files it just says
"'ffmpeg' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
    operable program or batch file.
    Combined audio files into combined_output.mp3
    Press any key to continue..."
what do I do from here?

You didn’t install ffmpeg correctly, you have to add it to your system path - it takes only a couple min but just search up how to install and you’ll find it for every guide

The thumbnail is funny: NO MORE PODCASTS. I'm sure many other people are on the different side of the spectrum. I'd gladly listen to more podcasts discussing some interesting topics than watch shounen toons. The problem is that it's too hard to follow the discussions about capitalism or abortion or the role of philosophy in scientific discovery when your vocab is limited. That's why there's a phase of "kagebunshin no jutsu" in Japanese learning.

  • @cadian101st

Yeah, I don't really believe the core thesis of the video at the start. It think that semi-active listening (listening while doing with low cognitive load) is helpful, especially at intermediate levels and higher, I don't think truly passive listening where there is no focus is helpful. At best I think it just makes you worse at the task at hand. Multi-tasking is almost always a bad idea, it only works well when both tasks are so simple that the bar for productivity is extremely low. I don't think that hearing random conversations in the background particularly helps natives in their first language besides acquiring phonetics, it is when they are actually actively involved where they acquire most of their language.
Also I personally hate condensed anime because it has an incredibly unnatural flow and the jarring jumpcuts often take me out the immersion almost instantly.
