I’m about half way through the first book and I’m loving! I’m so looking forward to getting deeper into this world.

Completely agree with what you said about the pacing of the first book. I was definitely more interested in Talon’s story than Kihrin’s, especially once he got to the island and things slowed down a bit. I’ve only read Ruin of Kings so far and am not super attached to the characters yet but I’m hoping that will come with book 2!

I’ve been super curious about this series for a while now. I think you’ve just convinced me to give it a go. A couple of those buzzwords have me exited to be in this world.
    Thanks for the video!!

Fantastic review!! Ruin of Kings was actually my third adult fantasy ever back in the throes of 2020 and I loved it so much! I never continued with the series after Memory of Souls came out but I started rereading this past December and it is definitely an all time favorite! I’m about halfway through House of Always and am currently on Dawnshard in the SA, and I’m SO glad you noted the similarity between the series bc I’ve definitely been thinking it! Not a ton of people have read Chorus of Dragons in my circle though so I couldn’t bounce that off of anyone!

I’ve been binging through this series as well over the last few months and am loving it. Started in February and am a few chapters into discord of gods now. It’s tentative on how it all ends, but I think this might be my all time fave fantasy series. Definitely in top 3. I’m with you in missing the main cast, especially in book 4, but you definitely fall in love with all the side characters as well. I just can’t get enough of this series right now 🐉

You've convinced me to give this a go! I've heard so many less-than-positive reactions to this series, but the way you talk about the narrative framing/footnotes makes me think of some sort of mashup of The Fifth Season + Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, and that actually sounds FABULOUS.

Awesome video. I love your enthusiasm for this series. I picked up TRoK because of you (and some friends on Instagram)...and thank you!!! Once you get used to the narrative its SO good. I immersion read the first, and currently reading TNoAT and I can confirm audiobooks are definitely the way to go!

Yes!!! Honestly the audio narrators are all so good for this series. Senera and Kihrin narrators are my favorites with Thurvishar not too far behind.

Bravo. I thought his was going to be a pretty short video with you basically saying, “Yes!” I have most of the books in the series and definitely plan to start it before too long. A creative narrative framework usually works well for me.

🐉 I want to thank you for introducing me to this series. I am buddy reading this with my sister. I am about 150 pages into House of Always. I am taking a little break because I know I only have one book left and don't want to finish to quickly? I preordered the final book but because I want the paperback (I don't really like hardback editions) I have to wait until November to finish the series.
This is one of the best fantasy series that I've read in a while. It had me at the prologue of the first book. Before I read this series, the Way of Kings had the best prologue that I've ever read in terms of making me very intrigued at what was going to happen. This prologue was better. I INSTANTLY wanted to know everything. About everything. I started reading the first book at the beginning of April. These books have been my main reads for the past two months.
I truly enjoy your channel. Looking forward to your next recommendation.

i’m late to this video and your channel but i came from the hot takes bethany video and i’m so glad i found you! i read ruin of kings a few months ago and i was obsessed with it but i ended up dnfing the name of all things halfway through. i think i got tired of the narrative structure that was being used again and it felt unnecessary and i got bored but i think i will love this series overall so you’ve encouraged me to try again and get past the second book.

Well, if your love and enthusiasm for the series isn't going to convince people to pick up this series, then I don't know what will, lol.
I am for sure going to give The Ruin of Kings a second chance, because I did really enjoy the unique storytelling and the characters (and their antics) when I first read it, but I was just way too distracted to give this book the time and attention that it deserves.
Thank you so much for gushing about this series, it honestly brings me so much joy to see someone be so hyped about a new favourite series! 🥰

Am I already reading the series and therefore don't nead this video? Yes.
Did I still click on it the second I saw it just to hear you talk about the books? Also yes!
Everything about this just makes me so happy.

  • @Above_Parr

I appreciate that you try hard to make it “not so gushy.” So we can be like objective about it hopefully! But hearing you get really excited about a series makes me excited, makes me want to read it, and makes me happy that you enjoyed something that much that you’re gushing about it! I appreciate your struggle because I imagine it’s hard tho, i am a fellow gusher too lol
And you just got your PhD, right? When you said you read the series from march to May I was like wasn’t she also in school?? HOW is that possible!! Because I’m picturing the amount of other things you have read also and finishing up your doctorate, and I am hella impressed!! If not a lil baffled at how much you are able to juggle at once and accomplish.
You are awesome! That is so cool and I aspire to be your level of awesome 🎉

I think I will just gush about all the characters in a book tag or something once I put that together, there are just so many things I love about this series!
I defended my dissertation early March so since then I have been job hunting but even preparing for the defense I needed to read to just keep the mental health balanced lol I don't watch too much tv so that's the only reason I get so much done, and my commute.

🐉 I’ve read the first two of this series so far, and I have the next two paperbacks sat on my Library shelves waiting to be read. So far TNoAT is my favourite of the first two - I loved the narrative back-and-forth in the pub! Though each book has at some point gotten too lore-heavy for me to track, and that’s when I start to desynchronise a little - usually around the halfway mark or thereabouts. It was on Dragon Isle of TRoK, and after Atrine in TNoAT.

I can't wait to read this series. I got my preorder of the final book a couple of weeks ago. I was going to read it after GGK (reread previous 2 and read new book I just rcvd) but I just unexpectedly got an ARC for the final book of the Firemane trilogy by Raymond E Feist. Chorus of Dragons will be after this. Probably July.

I just finished and loved the first book. I decided to watch this to get an idea of what I wanted to say when I reviewed this book in a video and my written review. I'm excited for the first book, but I might have to wait for a little bit since it's not in stock at my BooksaMillion and I just bought two books online. I'm trying not to make online purchases every month. I loved the characters and narrative structure was fun for me, but it did take me a little time to get into it.

I feel like this series is either going to be completely my jam because the interesting narrative take and footnotes or completely not my thing because of the different timelines (which is a device I always have a hard time tracking). Think I'm just going to have to try it and find out.

I checked out this book from my library ages ago but had to return it before reading more than a chapter due to studying for my degree.

Thanks so much for this review. I keep seeing these pop up from time to time when I’m at the bookstore, and I always worried - because of the title naming conventions - that this was trying to be ASOIAF lol. Maybe I’ll give it a try one day.

    • @LiteratureScienceAlliance

Oh it is nothing like ASOIAF probably closer to Stormlight or Wheel of Time in the epic fantasy genre space.

Ooof, I've been sold on the idea of Chorus of Dragons even since I've heard both you and Jessi (basically all of the things that Jessi complained about seemed like fun to me XD) talk about it in a Worldhoppers video and I have been waiting for the audiobook of the last book to come out so that I can binge the series (

    • @LiteratureScienceAlliance
      @LiteratureScienceAlliance  2 года назад +1

I think its more that they are a similar sub genre and goal of fantasy that also happen to have good mental health rep while being epic. It probably should help that Jessi and Eliot brooks are HUGE stormlight fans and do not like Ruin of Kings so its for sure not a one to one. I actually think the cultural world building is WAY better in this series than stormlight.

    • @natasagajic1061
      @natasagajic1061 2 года назад

@Literature Science Alliance Similar goal of fantasy? For Sanderson, I'd say that, from my experience at least, would be epic, world ending battles and heavy religious undertones. Yikes 😬 (also not great romance 😅)
Now I'm getting less and less sure that I want to read it, but since I already own 2 books, I'll give it a try anyways 😅
Yeah, Elle and Jessi are huge Sanderson fans, but they didn't like the way the story was presented (from what I remember, at least) - chars telling the same story and we, the readers figuring out who's speaking the truth, which sounds super fun to me (liking figuring stuff out is kinda in my job description as a mathematician XD). Also you said that it is character focused, which is an immediate bonus for me 😊
But I am conflicted now... oh well, nothing for it but try it out for myself, I guess 😅 But maybe not right now 😅

Excellent review, but I'm pretty sure that this series is not for me. What I like about you is that you're willing to read books that are off the beaten path. There are hundreds of reviews on BookTube of the top fantasy titles, but few of books like these you're reviewing now. I like that. Keep it up!
