Thanks! Added quite a few books on my TBR list. Actually added all of them except The maritan Strain, the Crashing heaven and the Rig. I only heard about Inverted world, but it was more of a blink and you'll miss it kind of thing.
Very interesting, I like the sound of all of the books featured here. Not heard of any of these - well apart from Inverted World - I will defintely try a few of these, thanks Rachel.
Now that I think about it you rarely see Crashing Heaven mentioned on booktube and I remember loving it. I've had the sequel since publication but never read it. I think I'll move them both up the tbr!
If you liked Downbelow Station which is the deep end of her pool you will like the other CJ Cherry works. She is one of my big influences. I recommend her first series (The Morgaine Series ) which starts with Gate of Ivrel. It begins with what you think is a sword and sorcery novel but then you get the paradigm shift. I think I will try the Chris Priest book on your recommendation. Cheers Ed
Thanks for the suggestions for my “Want to Read” list…I haven’t read a single one of them, but a few were already on the “Want to” list…probably because I added them after watching previous book review shows of yours.
If you are into reading amazing scifi books that no other youtubers talk about (and nowadays most talk about the same books over and over, which is not so useful), check out the "Species Imperative" and "Web Shifters" trilogies by Julie E. Czerneda - they are space operas. She's not a new author, far from it, but no other book tubers talk about her work. I loved Species Imperative, and I'm finishing the third Web Shifters book and loving the series.
Great recs! I love and appreciate how your love of books come through your videos - you can see you read books because you love it, not just for views! I adore you.
Awesome list! Had only heard from one or two before, but those probably came from your videos too 😅 I always come away with some new books on my TBR from your videos, so thanks!
I think The Cruel Stars could fit into this category. The character arcs in the first book are pretty good. I liked the first book more than the second one.
Thanks for these recs 🛰️ I haven’t heard of any of these and they all sound soo good. Stolen Earth is going to the top of my list. The Rig, The Mars Strain and The Inverted World also sound great.
Ooooh I'm a Sci-Fi fan and am always looking for new titles. This list will give me some books to look for on audible, as I only "read" when I'm commuting, lol. I love audible and can't wait to look for these.
Thanks for your reviews, i have to read a lot now as i didn't know any of them.. I did want to ask you about RUclips sci fi. I've found some great new creators . Chief among them P E Rowe.
Thank you as always for the 🚀 recommendations, though 1 or 2 were already on my tbr list, none of the books here have I had the chance to actually read yet. I have definitely added a few more to my tbr, looking forward to get around and read these.
Through Hoopla my Library has Repo Virtual available, but I noticed it's the first time I've ever seen a one star rating.🤔 I'm not sure exactly how the rating system works as far as my local library versus a national Hoopla system etc.... but found that odd. Since they have it in Audio form I do plan to getting to it eventually... maybe then try and boost the stars? Lol... But there were one or two others you mentioned available too, so we'll see.
I finished Repo Virtual and a few others you mentioned but my reviews keep being taken down off the threads... let me if there's a way to share them with you. -David
Partway into Refraction now. Really liking it. I’m looking forward to seeing how all the different temporal threads tie together. Incidentally based on his description of the chess games Welker doesn’t know how to play chess. I kept thinking, that’s not how it would go; that makes no sense, etc. But I’m a big chess nerd.
@@TheShadesofOrange It was Chapter 9 (Feb 8th, 1988). It's where Tim and Jo play chess and he finds that he has a "refractive" advantage. Let me know what you think about the games, and if you're interested, I'll let you know what I saw. I've finished the book now. Enjoyable. Not sure if I'll start another book tonight (it's 12:05 a.m., so technically it's morning---probably shouldn't--I'll just go to sleep instead, soon as I finish downloading the library books that just came in: The Blood-dimmed Tide, sequel to the Widening Gyre, which I haven't read yet; and The Fervor by Alma Katsu). Edit to add: A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking just came in too (T. Kingfisher). Sounds quirky.
This is a really good collection of books. I really like the sound of The Mars Strain and may try and pick that one up at some point. Thanks for the recommendations. What I would be interested in is if you have any recommendations for recent post apocalyptic books as I’d like to scratch that Wool/The Passage (ignore the vampires!!) itch. 🚀 😃
I've only heard of a couple of these books on your channel previously and the rest are new to me. Definitely intrigued by Refraction (which I know you've talked about before), Repo Virtual, and The Rig. Thanks for all the recommendations! 🖤 🛸
I like that you highlight lesser known books. There are some real gems that deserve to be more widely read. Last year I read Mars Crossing by Geoffrey Landis (ignore the hype that says it is like The Martian---it isn't aside from the fact it deals with Mars). I wouldn't say it was great, but it was enjoyable. I do think the author changed his mind about a crucial plot point, but then forgot to remove a sentence that supported the now defunct plot point. Downloaded The Light Years, Virtual World, Crashing Heaven. Couldn't find The Mars Strain in ebook, audio, or hard copy at any of the libraries I can access; nor is it in the catalogue of our local used bookstore. Edit: I can get it for free at Amazon if I start the 30-day free Audible trial. Have Refraction (thanks to your earlier recommendation), Repo Virtual (downloaded Sept so that might be your recommendation again), Stolen Earth (Dec 2021). Really liked The Rig (yep, your rec).
Thanks Chris! I'm always flattered how many recommendations you take from me. I know you keep up with my videos so I'm not surprised that these books were already on your radar.
The Light Years by RWW Greene is awesome. As is Twenty Five to Life, his second book. Looking forward to his third book Mercury Rising to be released next month (May 2022). Needless to say Mr Greene has become a firm new favourite author for me.
I have heard of Refraction and The Rig (both from you! 😂) And have read none of these. I actually just bought Refraction, Ship of Fools, Empire of Silence, and Leviathan Wakes because of you lol. I may have already told you this, can't remember, but anyway, I know you weren't a huge fan of Dune but I highly recommend reading the prequels, starting with the oldest trilogy which starts with The Butlerian Jihad. They are written by his son and I found them very fun and the writing style more accessible 😀. Also I recommend the Ender's Game series by Orson Scott Card. After Ender's Game they branch off into two seperate series, what happened on Earth with Ender's best friend, Bean and What happens on a different planet that Ender ends up on. Both are great 😀.
🚀 So I own a paperback of “Crashing Heaven” which I have read, and I've also read “Refraction” based upon your previous recommendation. The others you mentioned are mostly new to me, other than “The Rig” which you’ve definitely mentioned previously. Quite tempted by a few of them! 🤔
I've heard of them all, most thanks to your channel, but not read any yet. Currently, re-reading Stranger in a Strange Land. One question, how "sci-fi" is The Light Years? If you changed the location to a small town in Kansas in 2022, would it still be the same (if that makes sense)? That book is the only one I am unsure about. Thanks for the video and list!🚀
I still need to reread Stranger. And happy that you've caught a lot of these books in previous videos. With light years, it deals a lot with the concepts of light speed travel in terms of time, but outside of that piece of hard science the story itself doesn't feel much like a space opera.
Hi Rachel. Love your reviews. Can you please make a video on new novels which have both Science Fiction and Fantasy in them ( science fantasy genre ) ? Would be great !
Thanks Shades....I've only read Inverted World and already have Repo Virtual and The Rig on my TRL ... The other ones sound good..Light Years & Stolen Earth caught my eye... BTW I'm really interested... . How many novels do you average per year ? Rough estimate...
Honestly I rarely see the Martian and would barely consider it sci fi, more just a book about a stranded modern astronaut. And I never ever see ready player one. Generally every sci fi list I see has Dune (deserved) and Hyperion (horrifically bad and overrated).
Maybe I have read too many books but the "voice in the head" tool feels so old to me. Alien, computer sprite, AI, chip...all start to feel like weak character tools that are not really characters at all. "Coming of age" mentioned on three reviews?
Is it just me or does anyone else lose interest when books become a series? I tend to prefer the one book one story ideal. The most I can do is a trilogy.
Hi looking to meet some of the youtube reviewes and this looks right up my alley and I may find some new books to read. Cheers Ed
Great reviews, I love how you give just enough information to stimulate interest but not give the plot away. 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks I try to find the right balance
Thank you for these. Craving a luxury sci-fi escape. Bubble baths with Saturns’s rings shining out the window. Any recommendations?
Hmm I'm still trying to think of something for that
Very solid content! Thank you!
Thanks! Added quite a few books on my TBR list. Actually added all of them except The maritan Strain, the Crashing heaven and the Rig. I only heard about Inverted world, but it was more of a blink and you'll miss it kind of thing.
Happy to add new books to your radar!
Thank you. They all sound good!
Inverted World by Christopher Priest is the only one I knew of and have read.
I think I'll look first for The Rig. 🚀
Yay! Hope you enjoy the Rig
Very interesting, I like the sound of all of the books featured here. Not heard of any of these - well apart from Inverted World - I will defintely try a few of these, thanks Rachel.

I didn't realize there was a sequel... my library only had the first book
@@TheShadesofOrange I believe it’s called Waking Hell.
I’ve added all of this batch! When it comes to sci-fi you always hit the kinda stuff I like. Looking forward to these.
Aw thanks! That is so nice to hear
Thanks. I really appreciate that you highlight lesser known books as well as more mainstream ones. Great channel!
Thanks!
This is a great list. I need to put Refraction on my husband's radar. Great video!
I hope he enjoys it
Never heard of any of them really want to read all of them. Thank you for sharing this list.
Success!
Haven't heard of any of them but adding all to my goodness. I'm already deciding which to read first. Very excited. Love you💜
Aw thanks!

Interesting list, thanks for bringing these titles to my attention! I plan to read Inverted World soon
I want to reread that one
Oooooooh! These all sound great and I've never heard of any of them. Thank you for putting these recommendations out there.

Oh thank you!
Nice to see an older book, like The Inverted World, get mentioned.🚀👍
Yes I'm trying to find more older sci fi since people only tend to talk about the new books online

Thanks for putting these back on my radar! I definitely want to check out The Rig and Refraction.
I hope you love them both
love your channel! Love Scientific Mythologies by Herrick It gives a great overview
