Thanks so much for including BLINDSPACE, Rachel. The strong shift to space opera was very very deliberate, and the scope gets even bigger and more epic in Wolfskin, Book 3. I'm glad you enjoyed that aspect, especially. Keep up the awesome videos!
Completely agree with you on How High We Go. Like you, I read it early in 2022 and now, even in December, I still think about it every now and then. The ending just floored me--I have never, at least in recent memory, simply sat in silence for 10-15 min. after finishing the book trying to reconcile my puny brain around the full scope and vision of what the author had just achieved. Easily among the top 10 books I've read in my lifetime.
I see Sea of Rust in your shelf I have not long finished, Anne Leckie sits in my shelf TBR. Great you are reviewing/reading different books to other you tubers 🎉 A. Tchaikovsky is one of my fav authors 😊
The Mountain in the Sea-Thank you for recommemding this one, yeah any fiction book that steers you to a little reasearch of something in reality is an amazing book!
I read Dark Theory and liked it. I’ll have to do a reread when the next book comes out as I’ve forgotten too much. I have The Sleepless now. I’ll have to bump it up on my list. Same with Blindspace which I bought soon as it was released, but keep neglecting as it’s Amazon format but I have a Kobo now-I know there are ways to transfer it, I just have to sit down and do it. I have Ymir, and 36 Streets is on my library hold list (I think. Maybe still on Wish List). And I have How High too. I’m so far behind on my tbr list. What’s the book over your shoulder? Wild Massive? It’s not ringing any bells for me. I assume you liked it since it’s displayed prominently? I’ll check my “Rachel excel list” to see if you’ve mentioned it before.
I love to see what you think of all those. And Massive is a 2023 release that I haven't read. I think it just arrived in the mail the day I filmed this
@@TheShadesofOrange I just read the synopsis of Wild Massive, and it sounded recently familiar. Thomas, SFF180, mentioned it in his upcoming scifi video, according to my excel list. It's on wish list now. I didn't have Ymir (I do now though), but I did have 36 Streets (not on my library list after all)--I really need to come up with a better system for tracking books; e.g., which library, on hold, on wish list, now borrowed, borrowed or bought, now read, and which ones I want to read right away so they don't get lost in the pile). What system do others use to track their books?
I agree on How High We Go In The Dark being the best of the year, and I have to thank you for recommending it way back in the beginning of the year. I've read so many great books based on your videos.
Just discovered your channel, and you’ve turned me on to several new titles to check out. Thank you! I am glad to hear you shout out good books that aren’t getting the attention they deserve (as you see it!). [feedback: consider now you hold the book when speaking about it so both title & author are not blocked. Thanks for your POV and recaps! 🚀🔭👽
A. Tchaikovsky has become one of my favorite author. Currently reading "Children of Ruin". Really good. How high we go in the dark seems a intriguing one.
Not started Adrian Tchaikovsky’s new series yet, but buying as they come out. Purchased Ymir the other week based on your recommendation :) Also have 36 Streets on the TBR.
Awesome list, Rachel. I’m hoping to read a lot of these in 2023 as I only read one sci fi in 2022. I’m most interested in How High We Go in the Dark, Ymir, Shards of Earth and then Eyes of the Void, Blindspace, and The City Inside.
So...one of my favourite lists of the year! And I love lists/to-do lists etc. Dark theory, the city inside, the sleepless are going on my tbr📚 Stormfront, shards of earth, ymir, 36 streets are already on my tbr📚 no post-apocalyptic pandemic books for me as yet! You are tough!💪 Get well soon🤒🙏 And have a Merry Christmas weekend🎅🎉
How High We Go in the Dark is one of my favourite reads of this year. It really got to me. I have some of the others on your list but haven't gotten to them yet. And your enthusiasm for Dark Theory makes me want to pick it up. Cruising amazon now...... Thanks for all your wonderful reading suggestions and happy holidays to you and your family. 🎅🎄
Thank you Rachel. Very happy to see 36 Streets in your list (and at #2 no less). Thank you for your review, and for doing the good work of talking about books. Cheers, T. R. Napper.
Well, you got me sold on How High/Dark. Added to my TBR. Kingdoms of Death is pretty far in the future for me, having only read Empire of Silence. But I definitely plan to continue the series early 2023. Sorry you're feeling sick. I'm a bit under the weather myself. I've been working from home since pandemic, so it's been a while since I've had this.
I'm reading "Going Postal" from Terry Pratchett. Not your cup of tea but it has a prologue titled "A Month Long Prologue". Every time I hear the word prologue, it makes me laugh so hard. 😂😂😂
🚀 I don’t read sci fi Rachel unless a reviewer says something compelling about said books, which you did here. (#1, 2, and 3 got my attention!) Two books from this year that Im not even sure are sci FI got 4 stars from me, Vita Nostra and Our Wives Under the Sea. I do hope you’re well and enjoying the holidays❤
I have already bought some of these books based on your past recommendations 😉 haven't read them yet though. I may need to buy Ymir and The Sleepless with some Christmas money. Have you ever considered reading the prequels to Dune, starting with Butlerian Jihad? They are written by his son so the writing style is quite different, but I really enjoyed them and thought you might as well. It has A.I. and cyborgs which I know you like 😂
Wow I don't know a lot of these. 36 Streets sounds interesting. The author posted a longer Richard K. Morgan blurb on Goodreads. Have you heard of The Power by Naomi Alderman? Women can electrocute men with their minds.
I've read only 7 Scifi books published in 2022, and yet we don't have any in common. My top 4 (aka the ones I actually liked enough to consider them in a top anything): 1) The Spare Man by Mary Robinette Kowal 2) Mickey7 by Edward Ashton 3) A Prayer for the Crown-Shy by Becky Chambers 4) The Kaiju Preservation Society by John Scalzi
Loved hearing your top books. My ARC of the Spare Man seems to be lost in the mail. I enjoyed Mickey7. It would've been an honorable mention if hadn't included it in my Christmas gift guide
🚀Nice video. Added a couple of those to my TBR. Your review on How High We Go in the Dark made me rethink my initial thoughts on the book. I also really enjoyed the Pig Son short story. It's definitely a unique and well told story.
Excellent recommendations Rachel!📚 A few of these I own haven't read yet.🤔 The rest I added to my list to read.👍Thank you so much this year for all your recommendations.😃 I read more and in much different directions because of your suggestions.☝️ Thank you and Merry Christmas!👋🎅☃️❄️🌲
oh wow! thank you so very much for all the kind words about The Sleepless! i'm so glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for watching! I hope you have another novel in the works because I'd love to read more

Happy holidays, can’t wait for more next year, thanks!
Your comment fits so well with your profile picture... you just should have said "good grief!"
Almost all of these are going on my TBR! Happy Holidays :)
I've just read Elder Race and absolutely loved it. Now I'm looking forward to several of the others - The Mountain in the Sea, Dark Theory, Ymir...
So glad you loved Elder Race. I hope you enjoy these new ones
36 streets is on the list, Im more excited to read this now :)

Love this review! you're a hidden gem
Thanks
It seems a good idea to consider your recommodations
Well I think so 😉
Sleepless sounds really good. I feel like the characters in this book say stuff like "Well there ARE 24 hours in a day!"
Hahaha... how annoying would that be

Thanks. I'd especially say that #1 has a lot of appeal for non sci fi readers because it's more a story of humanity
I’ll be buying Ymir for my Dad for Christmas! Thanks! 🚀
I hope he enjoys it as much as I did!
Great list. I also loved How High! I don’t read as many new releases so I’m adding these to my list for the future.
