    I remember watching this when it was first aired. I wonder if they are still living together in this arrangement. I am guessing the mother moved out after a few years.

    My suggestion would be for them to add a little more money to their budget ( the 20k they set aside for reno) and look for a more expensive house that is a little bit turnkey with a better layout. At least a house that has a separate entrance for the basement like the first house. Even if the house is more expensive, they could put in a lower offer and may be lucky to get it. In all, I preferred the second house because it had a better basement. Even though the upstairs isn't that great, I believe it will be a lot easier to renovate the upstairs than the basement. Why buy a house with a nice deck if you are going to remove it?

      I don’t think 20k would make a major difference. It would have to be 50k+.
