It’s karma. I don’t believe that man is “better” than Richard. He was awful too. But Richard did deserve it. I don’t cheer- that becomes a “lord of the flies” situation. I choose to not inflict karma on people because it will come from

I was drugged and raped by a 62 year old man when I was 16. When I woke up, I was frozen, but eventually got the courage to sneak out. I went straight to the police and immediately had to relive the trauma. I worked with the police in person for 3 days, calling the man and working the get a confession. For the next year, I went to court regularly and worked to make sure he was taken away. They offered a plea deal of 3 years. THREE YEARS. I told them no fucking way and they convinced me it was the only way. Thankfully, he pleaded not guilty. But that also meant I had to go to trial against him. It was all so traumatic. It was the day before the grand trial, he died of liver failure.
All of that work, all of the trauma, the details I had to share over and over again. The spectacle it made. There were articles about it (not naming me since I was a kid). He just died? It was so bitter sweet. He got off way easier than he should have.

I keep him out of my life unless it’s for my dad, and he doesn’t know the real truth and I don’t want to hurt him, he and I are extremely close and I know he would believe me but it would absolutely crush him and he has early stage dementia so I won’t do that to him. We learn English because it gives us access to a lot more knowledge and to watch tv shows and movies cause we don’t have them dubbed. It’s also just something we do, here we just always learn a language when given the opportunity no matter the language. Try not to think about it or where it is because there's nothing you can do about it now. Just try to make peace with your trauma in your heart and don't think about it. I know this is far easier said than done and until then I recommend talking about it as much as possible and spreading awareness. It makes me feel better, at least. When I'm truly happy is when I haven't thought of it in days. That's usually as long as I manage to go. Just days. My goal is to one day never think of it again.

English is the main language in the world so if you want a chance to get a good job and a good career you must learn English, even if you don’t have any interest in moving to an English speaking country. That makes his offer even more attractive to parents because in their minds it was probably the best chance they could get to guarantee a better future for their kids (as English classes are really expensive and not at all accessible to everyone). I really think it's worth noting with this case and a lot of others that it's not just people who travel abroad who prey on children who come from poor families. it's really common in every single country in the world for people to specifically Target children who they know won't be listened to and that includes poor children, kids who are mentally ill or neurodivergent, children from single parent households, and specifically children whose parents are drug addicts or alcoholics, or children in the foster care system. As someone who fell under pretty much all of those categories whenever I was younger I can very much confirm that whenever I spoke out about things that were happening to me that shouldn't have been nobody believed me and nobody helped me and unfortunately that's how it is for a lot of people everywhere across the entire world. it doesn't matter if you're in Malaysia or if you're in the US. children deserve to be believed, even if they don't seem the most reliable, children deserve to be believed.

I don't think families wanted their children to learn English, so that they can move to the USA and live the American dream. English is an asset in third-world countries but it doesn't mean it is only learned for living in the USA,. It is valuable in Europe too, if you wish to live and/or study in Europe. I find it quite weird that Americans think everyone wishes to live in the USA. I am sorry but the USA has no regard for its citizens, is highly racist to most of its population and is also discriminatory. Also, there is no universal health care, education is still a privilege and women are forced to give birth yet the government doesn't support the parents at all. In my opinion, compared to the EU and the UK, it sounds like an absolute nightmare. You might think what you said is unimportant but it validates the far-rightist claim that people in third-world countries are looking for ways to come into your country and frankly this is not the case. Only American people think that they live in an amazing country and yet, they leave their country when they get the chance.

Just because it's a 3rd world country doesn't mean u get to blanket statement that everyone there is poor and sad and wanting to move to America, or learn English. one note i wanted to add, is that theres a common misconception that in the third world people learn english or foreign languages for immigration purposes, but as someone from the third world (latin america) that's not very true at all, idk how it in in south east asia, but here, knowing foreign languages specially english, is done more so with the intent to help you get a promotion or a job, as being able to speak multiple languages is seen as a desirable skill in alot of jobs
im sure theres plenty of people who learn english with the intent or desire to immigrate to canada or america, but in my experience, most people believe its better to just get a nice paying job where you're still close to your family friends and culture than leaving everything behind to live in a foreign country

i'm from malaysia and within se asia i've only properly been here and singapore so i can only speak for these countries. it's pretty much the same here, most of us in cities/urban areas speak english fluently anyway bc of school and bc of consuming english media. in singapore and kuala lumpur specifically a lot of people speak it as their main language/one of their main languages andd it would be very hard to get anywhere career-wise without speaking english. even in rural areas nowadays, a lot of young people speak a good level of english bc it's needed for most tech/stem jobs. but like you said, not to say there aren't people learning english with the intent of migrating but it's not the most common reason.
as for this case, richard purposefully targeted underprivileged/marginalised communities, and unfortunately a lot of malaysians still put white/western people on a pedestal so i think a combination of those things is what got him into a position where he could abuse children. what haley failed to mention/research is that we have plenty of local, qualified english teachers especially in a city like kuala lumpur that the gov could've sponsored to teach these children but unfortunately there was a lot of corruption and racism involved.

People in the "not very improved" countries learn english because of a lot of reasons. Firstly for their social life and entertainment like consuming media, tv shows, series, youtube videos, fanfics, memes etc. Also even if they study in their own country they 90% need to learn english since most of the research papers, textbooks and scientific sources are written in english. They might plan to move to abroad but that's not the case most of the times.

These people need help and complaining about how some RUclipsr refers to these countries, especially when she 100% did not intend to come off as offensive or insulting does nothing for them. This can be your neighbor even one of your friends unfortunately, you can’t really trust anyone with your kids alone, never ever. I always used the idea that never leave your kids alone with anyone until your kids can use full sentences and can completely tell you what happened in their day. If your child can’t communicate properly yet, they should not be left alone with anyone.
