    Good seeing you so excited about your little baby plants. I'm the same way. I have a 98 year old gardening friend that's ill. Yesterday I went for a visit and she gave me a start of her favorite spring flower. It's called Indian Pink. She never gives them away. I was so honored and will baby it and cherish it forever. Happy Planting! ✌🏼❤ &🌱🌱🌱

    You've got me wanting to prune my tomatoes. Great video. I grow a lot of tomato seedlings, and they quickly get too tall. To reduce their height I do one or more of three things: remove about 90% of the root system and re-pot deeper; cut off the main shoot to the lowest leaf and allow stem to branch; cut off shoot top and plant it, allowing it to re-root. All work well and they buy me another 2 weeks or so in the greenhouse.

      Hahahaha - a perennial problem! Last year mine got so tall I had to make the planting hole about a foot deep! ;-)

I'm loving the cosiness of autumn. summer was so so hot and dry!!

    Vivi - you are right. Us gardeners are bonkers! I discovered a Hosta that I planted last year and said "hello" to it like it was a long lost pal. 🤔
    I'm with you on tomatoes. I have 5 varieties growing on my windowsill and they are such a joy to grow. I'm going to grow one of each in my (plastic - sorry!) greenhouse in my garden and plant 2 blight resistant varieties (Crimson Crush and Resi) at my plot. Seeing them grow is one of life's great pleasures although I have a huge soft spot for my squash plants. Just GORGEOUS things!
    I'm no expert in any shspe or form but anything i've grown in cardboard or paper hasn't worked out either. Maybe it's this gorgeous spring we're having? Who knows?
    Hurrah for your own special fertiliser! The local authority have removed the facilities from our plot in deepest, darkest Surrey. To save CASH! So I plan to treat my plants to my own brand of feetiliser over the coming months too.
    Lot's of love, as always. 💋

    Good morning Vivi !! structure is the key Vivi, as my life falls apart without it !! I'm sure your days was always full and you
    knew what you were doing at work from the minute you arrived to the second you left. so if you don't structure your life now it will soon fall apart as i found myself having to leave a full-time job in a very stressful busy place. so structures on the plot help you fit more in, so does structure in your life do the same !!! thanks for sharing and happy gardening !!

    You look happy & productive here Vivi! I totally know what you mean about the sounds, smells and textures of tomatoes and their leaves. My dad and uncles grew them commercially here in California. Our entire town smells like tomatoes, leaves and even the steam coming from the factory where they can them, permeates the hot summer/fall air! All of us kids say it's the scent track if our childhoods! Well that and fresh cut hay, horse and cow manure but those even smell good when you are a ranch kid (hicks from the sticks), lol!!! So plant and fawn over those plants, I could watch you doing that on YT for hours! They are human catnip as far as I can tell 😊🌞🍅🍅🍅🍅🐝🐝

    Vivi I thought of you and Sean today. My cousin did a lot of research on our family and created a spiral bound book of it. It is about an inch and a half thick. It shows that some of the grandparents (too many greats to count) are from Bromley, Kent. I looked it up and it is on the outskirts of London. I was like wow that is where Sean and Vivi live. We are also from Bury, Lancashire.
    Your plants are looking great. I cannot wait to see your beautiful garden. Keep up the good work girl!!!

    Vivi, my earliest garden smell memories are from the Dill weed plants that my mother always had in the garden. I'm not sure what she did with the Dill as I don't remember eating a lot of pickles which would be the first thing I could think of using Dill. I too like the smell of the tomato plant and it makes me anxious for the taste of that first tomato bite. I have the potatoes planted and will be planting the lettuce, radish, onion, and cabbage plants this week. In three weeks the rest of the plants will go out in the garden.
    Have a great kitchen potting day.

    Haha .. we need a job in order to get a little REST! I'm doing the same thing ... renovating my back garden completely. PS .. love, love, love, love my garden which I am planting in pots this year! PPS I have a wall cabinet where I've put a florescent light in which acts as a greenhouse to help my bell peppers, aubergine and tomatoes stay warm and lighted. Once they get bigger, I put them under a reading. lamp and under my kitchen overhead lights until it's time to plant them out. Now, to get some more seeds started. Whew, where can I put them now??????????

  • @snowpony001
    @snowpony001 7 лет назад +1

    Great video. I'm sure your Chadwick's will do fine once you repot them and they will catch right up. I usually buy my tomato plants because I never seem to get them started early enough. I'm hoping to get some of those blight resistant varieties that Sean has spoken of. I found one with a similar name last year and although most all the other varieties of tomatoes did well last year (for the first time in three years) that particular plant stayed a beautiful deep green - no yellowing or spotting of the leaves at all. And the fruit was sweet and tasty. But I did sow a few San Marzano's from seed. We'll see how they do. I was reading through some of your comments and didn't realize that tomatoes are associated with inflammation. Wow, don't know if I can bring myself to cut back. Nothing like fresh tomatoes and sauce from your own tomatoes through the winter. And it must be that grandparents and tomatoes go together because the smell of them reminds me of my grandparents too!

    • @WhatVivididnext
      @WhatVivididnext  7 лет назад

      I think ALL our grandparents must have grown toms. :-) Hope your San Marzano's do well for you. :-)

    I think you are quite right about the newspaper ink. I stopped doing newspaper pots a few years ago. I had noticed the plants were really well, 'weedy'. There seems to be more 'size' or like a coating on newspaper these days.. I have a log burner and noticed that the newspaper wasn't lighting the same.. It seems to have a fire retardant coating in the print.. . I got a load of pots off freecycle and just re-use them now. No problems since.

    • @WhatVivididnext
      @WhatVivididnext  7 лет назад

      I don't understand it really.....as some things are fine but the toms definitely weren't happy.....didn't make sense to me. Hey-ho.....I'll keep my eyes peeled for discarded pots.... Happy potting on to you. :-)

    When I rediscovered growing my own tomatoes that leaf smell was what hit me most. I also have noticed the smells of transplanting the cilantro and basil and leeks/onions. The cilantro always surprises me bc the plants are tiny and the scent is full.
    I have been overwatering my tomatoes also and they have been a bit yellower than they should be also. Their size is great but they are getting too big for the grow shelf with ideal conditions and the patio is too cold at night so I might be a windowsill dweller as well. I may try to make some warmth under them. I don't have extra lights for bonus lighting them. I need a set of shallow shelves for early starts and then taller shalves for the tomatoes. My two store bought tomatoes are still surviving and yet looking like they might need a sweater. Lol. They are an experiment. So when you planted your leggy tomatoes deeply last year did they do okay? We lost some to their leggy conditions but ended up with plenty of tomatoes. The one year we optimized a whole patch of only tomatoes they grew best but we also had the hottest summer. What did you do to reply the stressed tomatoes? Just put in plastic pots with more soil or remove old soil from roots and add more or? I just recently fertilized my with a super weak solution to get themused to the fert. I didn't see a huge difference. The one thing I did differently this year which I think added to their growth is used actual potting mix rather than seed starting mix. That was an oops when I did it but I see more health as a result. The mix was a potting mix made for veg gardening. I will have to see what was in it. I think the bit if nitrigen alreadybin them got the leaves growing faster from the start bc in the past when I used sterile seed starting mix they grew more slowly and seemed more fragile. Conversely I started my winter squash about two weeks ago and they look a bit stressed. I think they need to just go in the ground bc of their exposed roots growing miles out of the bottom but imUm afraid it's still too cold. They would require big pots and tons of potting mix so I'm debating on up-potting into larger pots or just risking it and putting them in the ground with milk containers over them to protect them. Hmmmmmm. Your smaller tomatoes on one end might also have just been from less light hitting them on that end or a cooler condition. I spin my trays around to optimize the light if anything is looking smaler or not growing equally. I do same for bottom beat bc sometimes the bottoms are only partly on warming lights and some not.
    They will survive. Just keep an eye on them and keep on sowinhbc and you will have time for sewing in that period around June when most things are in and there is a wait until a larger harvest starts happening.
    Thanks for the video as always. 💗💪🏻

    • @WhatVivididnext
      @WhatVivididnext  7 лет назад

      They're all potted on a looking happier now......I'm not sure why some were so weedy (I, too, turn my pots and trays every other day)......think it was a bit of over watering and lack of nutrition in the small amout of compost they had. Fingers crossed!!!!! :-)

    For the plants in the paper pots - is the end that's doing better the area that was away from the light on the window sill? I ask because I had issues with keeping the right moisture level in the paper pots, and the ones closer to the window would dry faster than the ones further away, and kind of stunt the plants. I never did master keeping the right moisture going with those pots and have given up, but if you get it figured out I'll be very excited!

      I read about avoiding the nightshade family, and the number of people actually having this problem is really very few, and that it only affects those with an intolerance to the solanine, and that is mostly found in the leaves and stems, and not enough to bother the majority of people. The advantage of the antioxidants is far greater too. It's an old post, but I thought very interesting. If your interested, see it here. Nothing is going to take my tomatoes away! Sheila6325 After reading this article I believe I am not in the group of people that are affected by Nightshade plants because I have been eating Tomato based dishes once in awhile and Pickle jalapenos and no problems. It sounds like those affected KNOW it immediately after eating tomatoes, etc. Thanks again Sheila, back to the drawing board for the garden!

    Oh, another thing I forgot to mention. I've seen babushkas in Russia spraying outside toms with a weak milk emulsion/solution (not sure what you technically call it? it's 1/4 litre bottle of milk to 3/4 water) early in the season.
    Another thing they do is hang an open bottle of iodine in the greenhouse where toms grow. Meant to help ward off blight
    Not tried any of this myself yet, but may have a few plants as a test run with milk thingy.

      I think I may perform an experiment this year: two plants (control and milk sprayed), same variety (not known to be blight resistant), grown outside next to each other. Will report back at the end of the growing season. Hopefully there's something to it.

      Yay! It will be great to find out something as simple as milk could help. Keep us posted. :-)

    Do you have to buy soil every year to start the plants at home?

      Yes, a couple of bags of compost to get the indoor starts under way.

    My Chadwick cherry tomatoes got huge last year for a cherry tomato. Is that normal?

      Mine get to about 1 inch in diameter to 1.5.......are yours getting bigger than this. They are one of the larger cherry toms.

    Hi Vivi,
    Please do a vid on how you make your paper pots, and what type of paper you use.
    Regards,
    bill.

      It's just strips of newspaper wound around a round stump (pot maker or bottle) then the bottom ends are squished in and under. :-)
