Themes of reflection and resilience are on display the moment bassist Linda May Han Oh begins her opener, "Halo," a driving tune dedicated to the world of live music producers. The track, accentuated by Greg Ward on alto saxophone and Fabian Almazan's use of an effects pedal on the piano, calls to mind the grind and hustle of playing and presenting gigs. Performance of thoughtful and complex sounds is at the heart of jazz, and at the heart of Oh's impact as a composer and musician. Her work with artists like Pat Metheny, Terri Lyne Carrington and Vijay Iyer, plus her projects as a composer and bandleader (including a chamber jazz ensemble and album, Aventurine) have culminated in Oh being an in-demand jazz bassist.
In this Tiny Desk, Oh presents a mix of cuts from her 2023 release, The Glass Hours, and new works. Her theme of resilience is exemplified in "The Imperative," where drummer Mark Whitfield Jr. and tenor saxophonist Mark Turner shine. "Rise Mountains" is a conversation between the married duo of Oh and Almazan - at times a unified conversation, in others one where each takes a side. To close her set, Oh moves from upright bass to an electric for "Hatchling," inspired by her and Almazan's 3-year-old son. This whimsical song, with Oh and Sara Serpa vocalizing, paints a portrait of a tiny human discovering life and exploring a new world.

First time of listening jazz with Bass leading and it's magnificent!
Bravo!!! 👏👏👏💜
Heck yessss. Go Linda!
I loved Linda from the first time she walked into the 55 Bar. Glad to have seen her and others at the beginnings of their growth. She is a lovely human being as well. Go girl.
Simply gorgeous, could listen to it all day. Congrats.
Sooooo cool love it ❤👌🏾✌🏾
I love never knowing what kind of music I'll hear from a new discovery on the Tiny Desk! Linda & Band treated us to such sublime music, and have gained a new fan! Love the FX on acoustic piano!
Just caught them in Amsterdam- unbelievable show - had me hooked the entire time. Blew me away!
Halo 🥰😇🥰
That's fire ! I love this set.
I have been looking forward to this one! Such command from all the players, but there is also something so rich and moving about the worlds that Linda May Han Oh creates. Music for the heart and head... If this is your first encounter I would highly recommend checking out her catalogue, as well as Fabian Almazan's - it's consistently brilliant writing and playing. Not to mention those mind-expanding effects on piano!
Facts.
Saw them last night, blew my socks off! Not to be missed live :)
Wao....

Bassist here and I’m floored by Linda’s technique and tone. This is powerful and on point. Love discovering amazing talents because of NPR.

My Bro Greg on the sax! 🎷
Great to hear an Aussie at Tiny Desk 🦘🐨☀️
absolutely incredible.
So dope!! 🔥🔥🔥
Crazy voicings, love it!
This is a perfect example for what my Jazz Piano teacher always said: „Play 4 chords for 1000 people, in Jazz you Play 1000 chords for 4 people. Most wont understand.“
I love it so much, that ipr give jazz musicians so much attention and a big stage!
Greetings from munich (sry for my Bad english haha) 💙

@@mariagomes4721, Are you saying you knew when you heard the very first note/instrument you were hooked?
Massive ❤❤
finally good music is back to tine desk, I was about to give up tbt. Boilen we need you
Finally? There’s been nothing but killer shows lately. Your taste is severely lacking.
I haven't heard them before...this is great!
LOVE Linda's groove and creativity. Have been a fan since she played with Pat Metheny. Go Aussie go! Props to her band also. Edit: @15:00 sounds like Fabian was quoting Isabella's Lullaby from The Promised Neverland
nice
✌🧡
That vocalist is something else. Great accomplishment to band and all good Monday morning vibes for me at least. Second play now🎉
She's wonderful, and in some aspect brings to mind Flora Purim when she performed with Chick Corea.
That was amazing 🔥🤩 Linda is a KILLER ! 🔥☠️
At last something I can get my teeth into.
Mark Whitfield Jr sounding tasty on those drums!!
Wow
I don’t know what the fck this was, but it sounded awesome!
Ok! Not mad at it!
Good music , what happened with the famous NPR sound ? The piano and the drums sounding compressed , the saxophone warmth is less than I am used to , only the double bass is loud and clear. Am I the only one who noticed ?
Her song about her son starts with a pure harmonic, then frantic scrambling, then an F-U chord🤣👹
Y’all should do one of these with will wood
I would love to play for your channel
Of course we all bring our own associations but the last song made me think of Stereolab. 👍
pleas we need kendrick here 🙏🏽
What is triggering the piano effects at 3:31? I guess an effects pedal?
Where was the mic on her Bass supposed to be pointing? Would have sounded so much better with something on the neck, too
what microphone do they use?
Just wanted to comment here to proudly share that I've been sober for 1,668 days.
🫶🏼🎶🤸🏽♂️🖖🏼
@nprmusic I dare you get Lorna Shore in Tiny Desk!
Helene fischer konatabss jazz
Larger Bass Sound , Please!
Linus and Lucy?
i have no idea...
Can I vote for Judas Priest?
5h of straight rehearsals to be able to do this without music sheets
THANK THE GODS NPR IS BACK TO ITS ROOTS🎉🎉🎉🎉. Please no more mainstream artists
gatekeeping is something that music doesnt need. dont be so frustrated.
😂
It’s not that often you hear an upright bassist solo melodic lines so well. The pianist tends to overplay(maybe the piano needs to be mixed louder so he doesn’t have to play with so much force). The sound effects are annoying and don’t add anything to the ensemble sound. Otherwise, an excellent performance by the band.

This is the ONLY worthwhile thing NPR does.
Feels like the bass is a bit overpowering. Yeah I know that's the focus on Linda but I feel that it's breaking balance of other musicians.
Cacophony. The bear didn't just step on their ear, but chewed it off altogether.
Trump!
Too much jazz noodling for my taste.
This is OK, but can we get something even remotely rock? It's all hip hop and snarky puppy wanna-bes.
You actually WROTE this mess???
We didn't need to hear how she was Fkn during the pandemic. Coulda left that part out 😫
Can I vote for Judas Priest?
