- In this DCS: A-10C II Tank Killer video, we’ll look at the GBU-54 laser-JDAM. The GBU-54 is 500-pound class bomb with options for INS/GPS and laser-homing guidance. It can be loaded on all 1760 smart racks.
While INS/GPS allows you to launch-and-leave and the ability to engage through cloud and smoke cover, the laser-guidance provides increased accuracy and the ability to engage moving targets. It’s up to you to determine the best guidance based on the engagement.
It's hard to believe it's been nearly 10 years to the day (Oct 4, 2010) since the original A-10C module was released in "Beta". I just re-watched one of my videos from the Beta days.

I didn’t know this had beta version. I got the Disc when it was released. The good old days when you went to the shop & brought a physical item 🤪

I’ve got the Lockon platinum & the Fatshark discs also I had to wait until they got released into a shop. This was way before DLC & PayPal.
Even harder to believe it's the only module that isn't a beta in the entire DCS range of unfinished aircraft

So these work like I thought they would. They will fly to your SPI until you fire the laser, at which point it will prioritize the laser. Looks like a very useful and versatile weapon!
I would like to see classic Cold War warrior A-10A as full fidelity module some day. A lot simpler but still fully realistic.

DCS already do the A-10A as a module, am I missing something? Is it not full fidelity?

EDIT: so it looks like that the -54 will default to INS/GPS but the laser seekerhead is always active and as soon as it sees a laser, the laser overrides the GPS target?
I was wondering that same thing and it must be the case that a laser overrides the GPS location. Happy to be proved wrong.
Yes. And if the bomb loses the laser spot it will use INS to guide into the last known laserspot position.

Thank you for those updates, Wags! Your tutorials let me forget the current COVID19 situation. I'm looking forward to the A-10C II release :)
It's such a mission flexible munition. There's almost no need to carry 12s or 38s anymore unless you're going for a conflict or mission specific loadout, or if you feel like beep-bopping with 12s on the TERs.
Only downside is that you can carry this bombs only on smart stations, guess you cannot use the TERs as you do with the gbu-12
@@3190tom That would be my guess. You'd think the TERs would have been updated by now to turn them into 'smart' racks. Since the A-10C is essentially a flying armored bathtub that holds a big gun and computer, I feel like this could be done.
It has been at least 8 years since I last fired up dcs and visited DCS forums and I hope to get back into DCS someday.
Awesome work. Can't wait to see the APKWS and HMCS (I might buy the A-10CII just because of that one second HMCS preview on the previous video...)

The A-10 is still the most complex and involved jet on DCS in terms of the TGP and Precision Guided Munitions.

A-10C was my first module. It is also the plane I cannot fly. A-10C II has made me determined to change that.

I think you can use the GBU-54 in hybrid mode. If you know a target is in a certian area on the map, you can have a jtac/fac to laser it when the bomb has been dropped in a certain area, then once it is at a certain altitude it will scan a 100M x 100M grid (maybe the one you marked) and home its way through. Or if its clouds at 10 000ft and you dunno where target is but some one else does for example another plane under the clouds, it can lase it for the bomb.

Only if they use them in real life.
AFAIK the USN doesn't use the GBU-54 on legacy hornets, nor the APKWS on any hornet model. The F-16 can and does operate the GBU-54, however APKWS I'm not sure.

Yes please! But I'm afraid it was never intended to be released for the Hornet or Viper.

So if I understand right, if you drop without a laser it falls in GPS mode, but the instant you lase it aims for the laser?

I'm having lots of fun with the new laser rockets, HMCS, and new turn ability. One issue, in a "gimbal roll" situation with the original Hawg, I would do a "China Hat Aft Short" to recenter the gimbal. Now that switches the tgt pod to "Laser Search". Outside of switching the tgt pod to "standby" then back to "A2G", is there a quick way to reset
ecenter\unroll the gimbal?
Also, I was flying the "Hard Quickstart" in VR and it starts you at dusk. As the light fades outside, my right eyeball begins to see the cockpit with a green "night vision" glow while my left eye does not. This causes discomfort at first, followed by pain as it gets darker out. It is terrible! I've noticed that fires on enemy planes have different intensities between eyes in VR and other general issues between eyes with lighting and effects. The clouds in VR are terrible. They have little blobs that roll with your head when close to the clouds, it looks bad. They also "chunk" in a and out of existence at different ranges and angles off-center of your vision, different clouds between eyes. They also need to be fixed ASAP.
Finally, white-hot or black-hot IR on the tgt pod has crazy contrast swings that black out\white out the picture if a little smoke comes into view of the tgt pod, even just a little at the edge when zoomed all the way out.
You should probably adjust the quickstart to hide these bugs (change the time of day, remove clouds, and remove all the fires\smoke) until they are fixed, just something about showcasing all of your bugs to the beginners jumping into the quickstart seems like a bad idea.
Overall it was definitely worth the $10 though, and these bugs will be fixed quickly right Wags?

Getting a little excited to see whats in-store this month, lol. A10cII is a definite but i have some extreme dough burning a hole in my digital flight suits' pocket, lol. Interesting changes to HUD symbology as well. I see a range staple has replaced the IAM/CCRP reticle. Will this HUD symbology be the same for 'old' JDAMS/GBU's?
I have the A-10C and it came with mappings built in for the Thrustmaster HOTAS throttle quadrant and stick, plus it had built in mappings for the Thrustmaster pedals. For some reason with the A-10CII all those mappings are gone. I copied the mappings from the A-10C and they worked for the most part, but curious why ED didn't include the built in mappings for that model like they did for the predecessor.
Any plans to include GBU-39 (SDB-I) / GBU-53 (SDB-II) in the future?
Small diameter bombs are still a big fat maybe for the Mudhen

Hi Wags, Just to confirm with the first drop using GNS only as a reference, do you no longer need to set the CDU to mark first to allow the HUD to reference your new designated SPI? Or did I just miss that step? Its looking good, can't wait to get hands on!

This is still bugged, the staple is tiny and the window to drop is therefore seconds long - regardless of altitude and speed.
Can you set the DSU-38 to proximity det? Has FMU-152 functionality been implemented? Can we get GBU-38s with DSU-33s and FMU-152s?
What is your curve for the slew? I cannot set it up because it’s way to sensitive. I heard that you can decrease sensitivity in the aircraft itself but it’s too much work and it would be easier to just get a good curve. Thank you in advance, love your videos (:

F-16C was the first plane that used this bomb IRL. Can you _please_ add it to our Viper in future?
For DCS: F-16C II maybe...In 10 years, for another $10 or $20.
it could be that the model they're simulating didn't have the necessary upgrades for these, same way the original A-10 they simulated didn't have them either.

We'll be starting work on the A-10C pilot soon, once the F-16 and F/A-18 pilots are done.

What is exactly this weapons advantage over mavericks or gbu-12? Be that in real life or dcs.
Fire and forget, so you can turn away immediately and not worry the pod is on target. Also cloud cover doesn't matter if you have a waypoint designated.
It seems like I never get the distance scale to release and it only wants to drop right above the target. Anyone else having this issue?

Yes. You don't need to keep the pod pointing at it after it drops and cloud cover isn't an issue.

I cannot get the range cue on the left side of the HUD to show. Tried to follow each step demonstrated here with no luck. Must be missing something. Anyone else have this issue?

I'm having the same issue. The DMZ does show, but it is very small and remains that way even as I get close to the target. I'd like to know how to correct it.
@@mysty2236 I was thinking airspeed and altitude differences should change the range of the weapon, but I've tried several different variations and the range always remains under 3 miles. His range seems a lot longer. I'll keep experimenting. Glad to hear it's not just me. Tnx.
