God that ending hit hard. I realized that when Danny is talking to his Dad, he says that he couldn't even look at his Mom because it reminded her of his Dad, but when he's about to die, they look in each other's eyes. It's very bittersweet.

      He destroyed the hotel
      Tilled those monsters
Saved the girl and made her into a saviour dat will till more monsters like rose and destroy hotels like overlook nd he continues to mentor her
Cuz world is a hungry place nd don sacrifice made sure a fight against those continues
U know ppl like don never meant to lead a normal life
They are meant to shine against ppl like rose and hotels like overlook nd make sure to mentor more ppl like him who shine for humanity
      He did dat
Also his happy ending with her mom
      His purpose was served

Well Freddy, problem with that being we never see his "death" and neither Dan or Abra say he is dead. One would think that such an important death would be confirmed directly, but it is not. Hell, the previous scene is her hoping Dan escapes, cutting to her stating "I knew you were fine." It is a thing called AMBIGUITY.
Likely just in case a sequel is ever made. Speaking of which, director Mike Flannagan has stated he is interested in a follow-up so if he could use this as a means to show Danny made it out if he so chooses.

The fact that people didn't appreciate enough what Mike Flanagan did with this film is criminal. He somehow managed to make an amazing sequel to TWO VERSIONS of the same story that you can appreciate regardless if you are a fan of one or the other. In fact, I consider this to be outright superior to the novel version. The man is talented beyond belief.

I think that is exactly why people didn't appreciate the movie - because the director tried to please both Kubrick and King fans, without knowing what made each of their version of The Shining so special, and now it just feels like he butchered King's novel adaptation in favor of adding fan-service for those who liked Kubrick's movie.

Because he must understand knows by now that it wasn't his father who tried to kill him and his mother, it was the hotel and hotel killed his father and tried to kill him and his mother. Nicholson did a nice job presenting how he was kind of seething at his situation even in the earliest stages of the movie - check out the family car ride up to the hotel. The spirit of the hotel simply took Jack's problems and amplified them. But jack was fully cooperative in the hotel's efforts

Seeing Wendy again pulled my heart strings it’s as if it’s been moving in real time and the last time we all saw her was 1980 now 2019. Very nice touch. Seeing the overlook hotel again took me right back to being 9/10 years old watching this and experiencing the overlook for the first time.

I loved how much inspiration they pulled from the Kubrick film, but I think killing Dan at the end cheapened his character arc, even with the nice moment with his mom. The entire story was about him wrestling with and overcoming his demons, literally and figuratively, as well as proving to himself that he's not his father. Allowing him to live, like in the book, provides a much more satisfying conclusion since he can now live an unburdened life. Doesn't take away from Ewan's amazing performance, though!

I wish Danny would just live to celebrate his 15 years of sobriety and Abra’s 15th birthday. The ending felt bittersweet and leaving the main character in the dust is a waste. Sometimes novels are better than the movie adaptation. Even the bond between Wendy and Danny brought me treats of joy.

It's the goddamn continuity to the movie adaptation of The Shining. In its novel, Overlook Hotel got destroyed by the end of it, so this particular ending was Mike Flaningan's way to connect his film to the Stanley Kubrick's film.

Dan's fate was so sad yet sweet somehow, him just looking at his mom for a final time as the Hotel bruns down and him turning back to his young self, it's kinda like a meaning like his final thing he wanted to see was his mom since that was the only parent who loved him and was there for him.
And his death was kinda like his fathers death, and like King's original ending for the original Shining.

They simultaneously made a faithful adaption of the Doctor Sleep novel, incorporated ideas from the original book important to King that the first movie left out and yet still tipped their hat to the undeniable cinematic powerhouse that is Kubrick’s film version of The Shining. The fact that the filmmakers were able to pull that off rather than producing a mess is kind of a miracle. Haha

I liked the ending of the film... but I liked the end of the Doctor Sleep novel even more. There was a step more closure in the novel. However -- I am glad to see a director able to avoid taking the last few seconds of a film and NOT show a hint that... it's not over. The novel has better closure -- but the film closure is still very satisfying. And as for sequels -- I would rank it pretty high.

He dies in the same building that took his father, but he doesn't die alone like he did. Ice killed Jack, preserving him for the Hotel to take, but fire kills Danny, burning everything, including the Hotel and all who were trapped within it...including the memory of his mother who was just as hurt by it as he was. She's the only "ghost" that just wants to be with him for him, not his powers. Now the whole family can sleep.

I will agree that to see Dan die is hard but I will also add that the entire Overlook sequence is my favorite part of the film, second being the cool train Danny examines at one point. Abras cool too.

Also, dans death is inspired by his fathers death in the books! In the original book; Jack didn’t freeze to death and instead tried to check the boiler (or something like dat) and boom, the overlook hotel burns with Jack in it.

    • @chcknmr
      @chcknmr Месяц назад

@@EzraHamilton-i8o you’re right. He went down to check the boiler pressure and found it making quite a racket and glowing red hot. He tried to release the steam and was successful to a point even waving his flaming hands in the air which were on fire from touching the super hot steam release valve. Quite a lot of steam exited the boiler and filled the room before boom, it exploded killing jack instantly and setting fire to the hotel and burning it to the ground.

This is an awesome ending to the filmography, but it sucks how Jack Torrance ended up being a bad guy, while he had a similarly heroic death in the novels.

Is she the spirit of the hotel?

I wouldn't classify it as a ghost. In the books, at least, the Overlook itself very much became "alive" due to Danny's shine.
Think of the Overlook as Pennywise, except instead of a shapeshifting alien that feeds on fear, it's a place that feeds off of psychic energy. It is a character in its own right.

Please don’t get me wrong...Stephen King is an absolute genius, and his literature has gifted us with some of the all time masterpieces of our age, and ages immemorial. I know he wasn’t thrilled with Kubrick’s adaptation of The Shining, and as a musician, I can appreciate the fact that other artists can adapt a work in a wholly different manner, which doesn’t always equate to our original vision. I do have to say, however, that this unplanned for, cinematic adaptation of his literature, built in/on addition to Kubrick’s, makes for a piece of art that moves me in a way, equivalent to “The Green Mile”, or the “Shawshank Redemption”.
