Anyone else ever notice that when Anakin was killing the Separatists he literally saves Viceroy Nute Gunray for last? I believe he did that on purpose: after Gunray spent two entire movies trying to kill Padmé, Anakin wanted Gunray to squirm in fear and panic before cutting him down last.

Basically the violent act became associated with his anger and also as a solution to problems he couldn't control. His anger was justified, this time. Vader murdering Younglings: Forced, pained, and heartbreaking
Vader murdering Separatists: Exhilarating, hilarious, satisfying
It makes sense as to why Vader enjoyed murdering the Separatists. Anakin had always had a deep distaste for politicians, and the Separatists were at the top of that list. Whereas, the Younglings were a mirror reflection of Anakin when his journey towards his destiny first began. Not only that, but they were looking to him for hope in a confusing and dark situation. I wish ROTS delved deeper into this stuff, but for pacing’s sake, it makes sense as to why George Lucas cut it out.

"Anakin might have justified the killing of younglings as an act of mercy." Actually, he didn't have to justify it. Yoda already did that earlier in the movie FOR him! When Anakin was pleading for Yoda to help him save the one he cared for, Yoda told him he should rejoice in the death of whoever he cared for, for they would become one with the force. All Anakin had to do was take Yoda's lesson to heart. I thought it was pretty ironic when Yoda told him to celebrate his wife's death, and yet when the younglings died Yoda seemed in pain from it. Why was he not rejoicing? They're one with the force now!

The sad thing is, if you think about it, you can see where Vader's enjoyment of the massacre came from, especially after watching the Clone Wars. Gunray, Tambor, Poggle, all had been arrested at least once during the war, and they always seemed to escape, and continue to cause problems. I can imagine how frustrating that must have been for the Jedi, frustration that Anakin felt as well. Finally, having orders, and permission, to kill them, it must have seemed like a weight had been lifted. The fact that Sidious had likely ensure their escapes each time was irrelevant. Vader was only in the moment, enjoying a victory over an enemy that had caused him so much pain in the three something years of the Clone Wars. His actions were...an understandable evil.

86sith according to many times in Legends (several of which are in novelization of movies and some directly approved by George Lucas), it is said that once the dark side consumes you, your iris takes on a golden glow with a blood shot eye around it. It might not be directly Sith, but is directly a result of pure dark side connection. The reason why all Sith in the movies, at times of true hatred, have these "Sith eyes" is because of that. Maul in Ep. 1, Anakin and Sidious in Ep. 3, and then in 6 Sidious does too. The reason Palpatine looks so screwed up is because of dark side connection, not force lightning. The Lightning merely took away his disguise hat he used to fool the Jedi, and he took full advantage of that. This is according to the novelization, of course, and several other Legends sources. A true dark side connection alters your physical appearance.

As for his duel with Obi-Wan, he was still very conflicted internally and so he couldn’t completely immerse himself in the dark side. He only truly did embrace his hatred of him when he got his limbs sliced off and that’s when the eyes returned. That also explains how Obi-Wan didn’t instantly lose since Pre-Suit Vader was already on the same tier as Sidious according to Nick Gillard and George Lucas.

First was instinct, second was reluctance, but third was gratification. You never mentioned his motivation for enjoyment here, but this is why; the Separatist leaders had, in his mind, started and maintained a war that he had personally fought in, and he found it gratifying to see suffering in those who had themselves caused so much suffering.
Also, it seems that novelizations make Sith even more sadistic. Here, Anakin is gleefully killing instead of the movie where his enthusiasm was, if present, internal. In the Force Awakens novelization, Kylo Ren laughs when he kills Lor San Tekka, a big difference to his silence in the film. It seems small, but it really isn't to me.

This includes seeing them anywhere on the floor afterwards. Wat Tambor was obviously filmed (3 pictures of Anakin grabbing and stabbing him exists) and you later see him on the floor near the long table. The script says Shu Mai is hiding in the meeting room with Tambor but not sure if her CGI death was made like his. The Cat Miin action figure has a pre-made slash across her chest.

It showed him palps duplicity and manipulative ways to him. In my mind while it also was the real shift in his "alignment" it was also the mission that planted the first seed of "light" in vader's eventualy return to the light. as he probably mulled over the information those councilors spewed for years.

Vader definitely teetered a lot between light and dark and definitely made moral decisions. Sidious started to figure this out later but gave it no concern since vader was fiercely loyal.
The separatists had committed war crimes and tried to kill him (anakin) and his wife padme along with his friends. Tambor, in specific, was directly responsible for capturing and torturing his troops (aka echo). It comes as no surprise that he enjoyed it. They were maggots always hiding and cowering.
The younglings he probably killed just because he was forced to and didn't want conflict. It was either him or the clones and cutting off heads was a lot less painful than getting gunned down. Its still a horrific thing to do, but Vader always justified everything with his morals. Vader obviously is intrinsically dark, but he still had an internal moral compass which prevented him for being completely evil like sidious.

The true hatred for the CIS leaders was this:
How many of Anakin's friends, fellow jedi, and soldiers had he seen killed or injured by the Seperatists?
It was him finally giving in to his hatred and desire for vengeance for the many who'd suffered because of the Clone Wars. It would have felt good. He would have loved it.

I believe it was the emotions Vader was feeling the very moments he was cutting through the people who had invaded Naboo, which he probably considered his home, add the assassination attempts on his baby mama and yea, I can see why he had sith eyes then and not later on. This is further proven when Vader gets sith eyes again while burning alive screaming "I hate you"...

You can't quote the Jedi on the "dark side". They are ignorant and superstitious. There is Nothing more sentient than emotion.

It’s can be explained simpler than all this. The break was when he went against his beliefs and slaughtered the younglings. The cementation was when he killed the council because instead of feeling sorrow for his break, he embraced the evil and let it seduce him further into callously killing the people he had truly hated for years. Now it felt amazing to embrace the dark side.

You mentioned how the Sith rites involved killing someone close to them. What if the death of Padme, and not the Steps Council, was Palpatine's intended trigger for Vader's complete turning?

CheeseDude23 Yollman AFTER. Not 'from'. It was a moment of reflection he had to finally sink in what he had done. He enjoyed killing the separatists, hence the 1st appearance of sith eyes.

fzdreaddy so he goes from taunting and relishing killing people he would’ve killed regardless seeing as they were apart of the separatists to crying over his actions killing them? Man stop, you know that shits contradictory.

I always thought it was because that's when Anakin felt the most betrayed when his eyes flared and I always thought that didn't this moment is when Anakin realized this entire war was because of the person who you trust the most who is Ben In This Moment he felt betrayed as well as the last few moments of him and Obi-Wan's battle also the battle against ashoka

  • @flintironstag2381

Let's be honest. Anakin probably dreamed of slaughtering the trade federation leadership for years, thinking they were the sole cause of the war. All his frustration, hate and anger came out when he confronted them on mustafar. I don't think he viewed the killing of kids in the Jedi temple as anything more than a means to an end (at first at least).

The Separatist Council were hardly innocent, Nute Gunray did in fact try to have Padmé killed, not to mention the occupation of Naboo and how he was able to dodge justice after that incident. I think Darth Vader felt an immense sense of satisfaction at being able to finally cut him down, as well as all the others that had been branded his enemies for the last three years. I think he felt very justified in his actions, finally delivering justice to people who abused a corrupt system to get away with crimes (at least from his pow). I for one think that being a pawn of Darth Sidious, who orchestrated the war, would count as a mitigating circumstance which is why Darth Sidious needed them to die. It couldn't become public knowledge that he'd played both sides, so he sent Darth Vader to silence the few that knew too much.
