@@FrancisL4D i don't like that statement. obviously business is about money. there is a direct correlation between the budget an anime has and its quality. In a good world(not even perfect) budget should be the only determining factor for the quality of an anime, since a skilled individual can turn money into anime. The fact that sponsors, concerned parties and unforeseen events can destroy a production is really infuriating because it shouldn't even be a issue in the first place. like school children can study earlier than the night before the test, these coorps should do better and we should have higher standards.

yes, but there are so much that goes in to animation since you can have great art followed up with barely any animation frames or bad art but tons of frames/fluidity. Now its kinda subjective to an degree when it comes to this, but people would easily call out if animation is stiff since its so obvious to see, but not many people call out when animation stuff are oddly timed or it has unnecessary frames (usually bad drawn frames masked to be "artistic"). This is what seems to be more meta nowadays when it comes to some "sakuga" since they go more "style" over more accurate representation of the adaption and its often easier for them to do.

Anime is a blend of multiple elements, from animation and storyboarding to voice acting. Just as a movie isn’t only about acting or editing, anime isn’t only about animation-storytelling plays a crucial role too. What an anime prioritizes often depends on its genre and purpose. For instance, in an action film, the focus is on crafting exciting action scenes, so even if the plot is simple, the visuals carry the experience. On the other hand, a thriller film emphasizes plot, where storytelling takes center stage. Similarly, if an anime’s primary appeal is its animation quality, then the animation should be the main focus. However, when that’s not the primary draw, it's not as essential, as long as the animation maintains a basic standard and doesn’t fall short, as seen with shows like Blue Lock or Uzumaki.

The most trivial example when people understand that the animation is so bad that it is impossible to remain silent is the Toei Animation from 2014-2016 One Piece anime Dressrosa arc and Dragon Ball Super anime with the first arcs. It just flew apart into memes and discussions. Toei received well-deserved negativity at the time considering the time frame in which they tried to make episodes with these arcs, it was just a nightmare, but then everything began to seem to get better closer to the Wano arc and the Top Arc in DBS. I was very glad when I saw that Toei corrected their mistakes and now One Piece from the Wano arc to the ongoing and remastered 2024 Fishman Island arc and Dragon Ball Super: Broly to Dragon Ball: Daima gets some of the best animation, visuals and battles that I have seen in recent times. It's truly impressive. Although this does not immediately make Toei a "good" company, they remain the same corporation as in the past, but at least it is nice that they did care about this negativity and the opinion of fans about it and they didn't continue to do it in the same style as was in Dressrosa and changed their approach to anime production to a more highrer lvl.

He said that the music, voice acting, and other stuff play an important part to a production of an anime. The production of Demon Slayer elevates the manga from being alright to great. For poorly animated shows, nobody wants to see a great manga get done dirty (Hell’s Paradise). The poor production of those shows end up bringing down the show.

I want to add another aspect of the production:
    Pacing.
Like, look at Tokyo Ghoul, Promised Neverland, and then look at the Haikyuu Movie. The fanbase might be split on the Haikyuu movie tho, seeing how they adapted around 20 or more chapters. Some say they cried tears of joy at how well paced this was, some were appalled how horribly paced this was.
I'm on the former side btw. Really enjoyed it. They of course left out so many character moments and highlights in the process, but I'm happy with the end product that we got. They did a great job with what they were given.

I would go even further and argue that all of the things he is talking about - animation, visuals, music and sound design, and so on, for example can convey the internal psychological and emotional states of characters in a direct, non-verbal way and that information is part of the story yet said information really could not be conveyed adequately verbally but only through sound, picture, and motion. Narration in a written work or dialog in either written or acted form can say a character is "sad" but in reality the word "sad" could be referring to an endless number of emotions, experiences, or mental states and so is quite ambiguous at best. I believe that this is the very nature of verbal communication, that verbal communication itself is by its very nature confined by very strict limitations. For this reason I personally think novels and such are overrated and that movies and TV (of which anime is a part) can convey a far wider range of far more detailed, specific, and nuanced information than can a written work. I think that you can consider the "story" as purely abstract thing but a common misconception people fall into I think is that as an abstract thing it can be communicated verbally with totally lossless 1:1 precision. But that is evidently NOT the case. For example, take an anime such as Voices of a Distant Star by Makoto Shinkai. The emotions and experiences and mental states of the characters are communicated in a direct non-verbal manner and though the collective sum total of "emotions and experiences and mental states of the characters" may be be considered as an abstract concept, such a concept really cannot be accurately conveyed, in high resolution or definition, losslessly, in verbal language.

Like you mentioned, a great story can be made worse with a bad production, but a bad or at least decent story can still be uplifted into a good or great one if the production value is amazing. Demon Slayer is the most apt description of the latter. Meanwhile Blue Lock season 2 is a good description of the former. Well, unless you look at it from the perspective that because the production of S2 of Blue Lock is so bad it's actually pushing people towards the superior manga. Maybe 8-Bit is doing some reverse psychology and animating bad on purpose to cut costs and send people to the manga, instead of making a good but more expensive show that makes people want to buy the manga. 😂Not sure if that will be effective long term!

    • @sadcatto3
      @sadcatto3 2 месяца назад +1

People are always comparing manga panels and a single frame from anime (it looks ugly because it's in between frames) and saying things like "manga is better". Then we got Blue Lock season 2 that uses the 'manga panels' that they like, animating them FAITHFULLY by literally making them a still frame. Imo, the animation is not that bad. Quite an interesting direction I would say. Yes the motions in BL s2 are really bad but the still frames combined with the right effects actually can look good.

    • @nikjovan4816
      @nikjovan4816 2 месяца назад +3

@@sadcatto3 I actually agree in some way. I think the presentation has actually improved, but I think that has more to do with the fact that they are compensating for the lack of movement. If there is no movement then let's make the lighting more dramatic and the effects crazier so people won't be focused so much on the movement. The problem is that this is a sports anime. SPORTS = MOVEMENT. You can't hide that for long. Imagine how less impactful something like Haikyuu would be if it had bad animation. It's not a romcom where you can get away with it if the story is good. Watching characters be dragged across the screen, constant stills of characters monologing but not moving, damn Powerpoint transitions. Or if they do move it's for like 0.5 seconds or bad looking mostly bad looking CGI. It doesn't work. The art also isn't on the manga's level anyway, so there is no reason to not go read the manga. Most anime's art isn't as good as the manga because the art it too detailed for you to draw 1000s of frames and make it move. But you compensate for that art with fluid animation, interesting storyboards, voice acting and music. It's sad man.

This was an excellent video, and I agree with everything you said. It's hilarious to me when people calling us 'nitpicky' and 'fake fans' when we complain about lower production value in anime, as if they just want moving, colored manga panels...
Two examples of mine are Fairy Tail and Bleach TYBW (most of it, at least, especially Cour 2)
Fairy Tail is an alright series (although it is dear to me), but it suffered quite a bit due to its production value, which could have elevated its source material if it was of higher quality, especially in terms of animation and storyboards
Bleach on the other hand has pretty good art and colors, but most of the time lacks sakuga/great animation and camerawork. While it is improving in Cour 3 and had a couple of banger fights in Cour 1, Cour 2 suffered the most in this regard, with many of its fights being very stiff and limited. This happens because they focus too much on the art and such elements in an action anime like Bleach, where great animation/sakuga is more important

The production is a core component of any anime. An anime adaptation can make or break any story it is adapting. A live action movie with bland direction, composition & bad delivery is not worth watching, a video game with bad design, gameplay, artstyle is also not worth playing. Same case for a badly adapted anime.

The reason anime is even needed is cause they want more popularity and to give manga readers something that feels more alive. Especially for a show that is sports i feel like you want and need smooth animation to make the actual matches feel alive rather then just reading pages. As for haikyuu i keep it soley for the anime cause it feels mostly like i'm watching a real volleyball match! As for the blue lock its the same thing you watch it cause you want it to feel more alive, especially for a story that feels a bit standard like blue lock with not too much depth which is why i dropped the manga after u-20 match and just wanted to enjoy it cause it would be as watching a real football match, but as we all know that blue lock animation feels nothing like a real football match, so yes animation is very very important

animation enhances your experience when watching a show. it doesn’t need to be a mob psycho s2 level sakuga fest, but you might as well read the source material if the animation for the show that you’re watching is going to be far below the standards. shout out to the people still watching blue lock weekly cause i genuinely wouldn’t be able to force myself to watch my favorite series if it looked like that

depends to a certain point. there's plenty of average anime that dont require and dont have amazing animation with good enough everything else to carry it and that's fine. not every anime needs the best animation but it needs a baseline of quality that's acceptable . for example blue lock season 2. season 1 while lacking a lot and i mean alot especially in the latter episodes had something about it that kept it together i don't know what it was but it kept it miles better than what s2 is now. for most of it with highlights that worked. but seaosn 2 is just nonstop issues and broken animation so its just unfortunately hard to enjoy. overall yes it matters most times. it just needs a competent level most of the time and its fine

The entire point of an anime adaptation is to adapt the source material into actual motion. Enjoying the story falls flat bc you could just read the manga. Anime is about motion, and how it enhances the story, not the other way around.

Taking some western animated recent shows...Invincible, x-men 97 and Arcane. Invincible has such an interesting world and great chrs, but goddamn is it the blandest show to look at. The extreme gore and violence does makes things interesting, however I just cannot revisit any of the eps. The png flying and zooming really hurts my soul. X men 97 on the other has sories which aren't anything to marvel at, but the show really does pop off at occasions and is interesting to look at...at all times. Then u get masterpieces like Arcane which have both s-tier stories and production...and are the shows where u remember the whole show episodically and keep returning to them years after they've aired.

Thats like asking does production/editing matter in live action tv shows. No shit it does. But animation can get away with certain things live action cant but yes it matters because thats the point of a "Animation series". It should be at least above average in animation imo and Blue lock is not even animated average this season. i mean this is the manga of the year in 2023 shit deserve wayyyyyy more respect then what its getting. kinda hurts because this arc is so damn good and i just hope they dnt butcher it.but my hopes are already low a this point 😭😭

Speaking on a topic/trying to defend something just because you like it, while having no idea of the technicalities is a waste of time, among many other things. People won't think about the arguments and constructive takes from the video and probably won't view it as a opportunity to learn something. That's one of the reasons why I said what I did in the first sentence of this comment.

I think production values are really important. However, on the point of them being more important than the story i might give a counterargument: Game of Thrones S7-8. Incredible production values didn't stopped the series legacy get destroyed by its poor storytelling.
I know its not an animated show, but i don't think production values are less important in live action tbh.

Imo you loose a lot of nuance when you strip a piece of art into its parts to analyse them. Because a good show is something more than the sum of its parts. The way they compliment each other elevates them all more than people realise.
A well directed, story boarded, animated, composited show could elevate a good story to a masterpiece. Because it becomes part of the story itself, it's the storytelling.

  • @rainscents

Simple answer : yes. An animation does matter in animation lol
This shouldnt be a debate ngl
Though some stories have more leniency in animations. It means in a story where movement is the plot point, animation should be better than those in story where emphasized in dialogues.

This topic is when you realize that the people who say "carried by animation" are full of shit. Animation is important, anime fans just have no idea what the hell they are talking about. Not only that but they also ignore pretty much everything else. To give an example let's use both Berserk Animes since they both have "bad" animation but they still follow the story of Berserk so animation shouldn't matter right? Well it does but what's more important is the direction, sound design, voice acting and everything else. 98 Berserk by OLM is pretty static but has gorgeous art style, amazing direction and voice acting and great sound effects. 2016 Berserk has Shiro Sagisu music and that's about it. The models look ugly, the camera movement is erratic and nonsensical, the lighting is really bad and the sound effects... CLANG. Basically animation is important but so is everything else, people just fail to look at the big picture and only look at how much motion some frames have the same way they used to look at how pretty a still shot was 15 year ago.

As a college animator it more the quality, timing b purpose of each and every motion
Like a anime I like with "poor" animation is house husband and ahiru no sora bc it focuses on other parts of the story or it fits the theme or tone of the anime
But this and other famous downgrade scene like in 7 deadly sins
Poor animation is basically rushed or poorly manged work and blue lock is a example of that a heavy action soccer anime needs alot ALOT of sakuga n season 2 is not it

The 2 examples are blue lock and tower of god.
Blue lock concept,Story are amazing...the slideshow doesn't take away much from the story...because there are some really cool moment'
So blue lock story trump over animation.
TOG animation was out of nowhere weird and off just to see...the story isn't This point amazing...so the TOG has bad animation that males the story bad.

I think they are on par, an anime with good production values but mediocre story and vice-versa leads to the same result, people losing interest on it, i have seen many cases on both situations.
The story and the way its told needs to be interesting enough, the anime can enhance this, but it can't save a very flawed story, on the other side an anime with poor production values affects negatively a good story, making it look worse, at the level of very poor stories even.
Does that mean that we can overlook mediocre visuals if the other things are good enough?
That will depend on each person and their standards.
But if its reach a point where the visuals are colored manga panels and slideshows, i recommend go for the source material then.
That being said, go a read Blue Lock!

When they do poor animation to a popular anime it's reasoning confuses me, especially when they're several seasons in, and it's animation quality just getting worse, with popularity it should be getting better or stay the same as original not worse!
Berserk had nearly 2 decades to get a sequel and all we got was CGI rushed seasons, 🙄
