Super confused why this scene was cut. Gives more insight into how they come and go from the island, not to mention explaining why daffy gave him the map. That was one of the biggest questions for me when I first watched it. After watching it 200 times like everyone else in this comment section probably has.........my takeaway is that Daffy gave Richard the map to sabotage the island. And clearly his plan worked.
Never saw this until now and it makes zero sense that it was cut from the theatrical and home distribution releases. This was a very important scene, and even if Daffy is gone, he still played a huge role in Richard's on psyche throughout the remainder of the film. It was awesome to see this, just wished Danny would have left it in.
In the book this scene really impacted me. I was driving and paying so much to the audiobook, I almost drove off the road. It was really frightening. But he made the trip with Jed, not with Sal.
Sal was portrayed very different in the book. Unattractive and quite a minor character. One scene that could have potentially worked in the movie is when he hides the body of the dead opium addict to avoid the unconscious girlfriend being upset. It could have been a very weird creepy scene. Then he sails back with Sal like nothing had happened
Yeah, Jed ain't even in the movie, which changes the entire dynamic of the story obviously. I'm pretty sure that the moment they signed Leonardo, the whole story was shifted to have him be the "man" to please his female fanbase. He doesn't sleep with either Françoise or Sal in the book. Sal isn't even described as particularly attractive in the book but rather as a chubby new age American girl.
Actually that cave plays a very important roll in the book. It's like a flush way between two worlds and how the characters turn/twist (perseptions) their minds around what each one assumes as paradise. The world can open the gates of paradise to us humans, but if so the real hell outside those gates comes in within the mind of every one.
I have traveled all over the world. Lived in and visited gorgeous places. Koh Phangan in 2019 is my favorite spot and i live here. Avoid the full moon party. Avoid a few higher trafficked parts of the island. Samui, Phuket, Penang, the Cambodian coast, etc don't hold a candle to this place. Unless you want to obsess about what was. It's pretty sweet right now. @@DavidArriola
Been to an isolated island when traveling Thailand it was paradise. Just me and the beach. I still haven’t told anybody about the place after 20 years because it will be ruined by tourists.
The beginning isn't really important but from 2:25 on they should have definitely kept. The stuff about daffy and his motivations really added to the movie
Should have left it in. Here you begin to see Richard ask questions and it seems set things up little bit for the rest of the film. In the film, despite the set up from earlier it seems to just make a change when the Americans find Richard again. Also the cave swimming made me feel uneasy. I'd be like, yeah find someone else for this supply run Sal.
it is a pity they did not include this scene, the first part is faithful to the book and the second part explains richard's doubts ... that there is something that does not work

That's a very good scene that explains better the character of Daffy, they should have left it.
This scene was crucial to understanding the whole picture... especially for the second half of the movie.

When you read the book and watch to the movie again, you will start to miss Jed.
I think they sort of replaced Jed with the hallucination of Daffy after his death. Just for the sake of not having too many main characters
They lamented the destruction of paradise in the late 90s. Kho Pha Ngan in 2018, god only know what it is like, I saw it in 2010.
better than what you'd imagine... but, yeah..

I was just at that maya Bay where the beach was filmed today. It was kinda cool.

whoa... talk about claustrophobia and panic! all that work and the deleted the scene!
That would be a hell of a boat ride if they went from Phi Phi Lee to Kho Pha Ngan. They're not even in the same body of water.
the real beach is somewhere else... its a secret lol
