  • Star Wars A New Hope was released in May of 1977 and started it all. It was George Lucas' Mona Lisa. It was the first big blockbuster and gave everyone Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Obi-Wan, Han Solo, Chewbacca and more. On this episode of REWATCH, Kristian Harloff, Steph Sabraw and Mike Kalinowski breakdown the classic, the grand daddy, Episode IV.

I have two older brothers. They had all the Star Wars toys. (Actually still do) My little sister and I were given an extra Princess Leia and an extra Yoda to play with and they hung out with our She-Ra dolls.
When I was a little older maybe 10 or 11 I watched Star Wars A New Hope on a VHS that was taped off TV. It was the CBS Sunday night movie. I fell in love with it. I watched it so many times I remember the commercial breaks. The first one is when the Tuscan Raider raises his staff over his head and starts yelling over Luke (Before Ben scares him off). We had a remote (that plugged into the VCR) so I was able to fast forward through the commercials.
We also had Empire taped but not Jedi. I remember begging to go to our local video store Captain Video and it was already taken out. I can only imagine the anguish my brothers went through waiting three years to see what happened to Han.
Eventually we got the VHS box sets. And the special editions. My sister and I watched them all. We have our own marathons inside jokes and favorite scenes. We see every new movie and show together.
This is the movie that built a franchise. It gave a generation hope. It made our imaginations soar and inspired so many.

I’m sure someone’s mentioned it, but the movie that the studios paired Star Wars with at the theaters to get them to show it was called “The Other Side of Midnight.” So ironic that this movie, which today has been completely forgotten about, was used as an incentive to get theaters to play Star Wars.

Even just talking about the regional governors and how it established some bits of lore, MIke's face and how into it, is so good. I turned 3 in June 1977, and my older sister was 5. We're pretty sure my mom took us that summer to see it when my dad was out of town, and my sister wanted to see it. That Christmas we got the record, The Story of Star Wars, narrated by Roscoe Lee Browne. It was his narration mixed with the audio from the film. We listened to that a lot, and the end of the first side is the music when they're being tractor beamed into the Death Star, and the second side picks up right in the middle of that music. They timed it really well. That held us over well with the story for when Empire Strikes Back came out. We still have that record.

We queued for over two hours, and the line went around the block. It was insane. So glad we had nice weather that day. When R2D2 got shot by the Jawas and fell over, everyone went "Awww". Guys, I might be crazy, but did anyone else see A New Hope for the first time on Fox? I seem to remember an ad campaign where Bart Simpson is flying the trench run on the Death Star and Homer is chasing him as Earth Vader. I distinctly remember that commercial, but maybe I didn't see A New Hope until my parents bought me the ORIGINAL trilogy on VHS. Either way, I love this movie. I get so irrationally emotional when Luke is staring off into the distance as the two suns set to that awesome score.

This is still my favorite movie of all time. It’s the beginning of my favorite universe. Lucas did something so special with this film. I’ve always said with Lucas less is more & I think this movie absolutely proves that point in visuals & story. He didn’t need $100 million to make this movie, he didn’t need computers (originally) to make the visual effects, he simply needed 1 guy at a studio & hippies in California to believe in his script & vision!

I'm of the prequel generation as well, but it is easy to see why A New Hope is so beloved. It's my #3 behind Empire and Rogue One. I love the simple story, the characters, the music, everything. Before Last Jedi, Luke was my overall favorite Star Wars character, but for consistency across the movies and animated series like Clone Wars and Rebels, I'd now say that Obi-Wan is my overall favorite Star Wars character. The Kenobi series...I don't want to overhype myself, but let's say I have very high hopes for it.

Also, not sure if this has been mentioned. And I'm not trying to tell you how to do your job, because there's no way I could host, produce and direct a show like you do, but the 3 shot is a little off when it is arranged as Steph, Kristian, Mike. Because I know that K is on my left, but when K's box is in the middle, S is looking off screen to the left (when I know she's actually looking at K). Also, the continuity of the background is off. I say this with all due respect to this FREE show. Just something I noticed in this video and the Solo video as well. Still going to keep watching these are really fun and interesting.

The new sound Obiwan makes is the sound of that Lizard that he is Riding during his chase with Grievous and when Cody shoots him down during order 66. It's no longer a krayt Dragon sound. I agree though. It's a lame change. There is a Gary Kurtz interview here on youtube where he says that every time he see's that Jabba scene he cringes. That scene is unnecessary because all of that dialog was already established during the Greedo scene. Which is why it was not in the original cut in the first place. I love these rewatch video's btw. Couple things, George Lucas was actually a huge part of the editing process for a new hope, the rough cut is called that for a reason and people pretend that it's his fault the rough draft wasn't perfect. Second, George Lucas didn't surround himself with yes men who didn't tell him no, cause it did actually happen, Lucasfilm hired people to do the jobs they needed to make the prequels. Those are the movies they wanted to make. They weren't movies some people wanted to see, was the problem

I remember seeing the original trailer for Star Wars in the movie theater when I was 7 years old (yes, I'm old!). It was shown along with the trailer for The Demon Seed. I thought the trailer was horrible. I remember the voiceover saying, "the story of a boy, a girl, and a galaxy" along with clips that looked really bad (watch the trailer now and it is pretty awful). At the time, I thought R-rated Demon Seed looked much more interesting! Then that summer my parents' friends told us about this great new movie that we needed to see - Star Wars. Unfortunately, I don't remember my first viewing, but I know I loved it. I do remember seeing it again that summer with my aunt, uncle, and younger cousins. I thought Princess Leia was awesome and wanted to be her. Han Solo became my first movie crush. I wanted Han and Leia to end up together since they were my two favorites. I devoured everything Star Wars after that summer. I had books, trading cards, some of the action figures, and the Story of Star Wars LP which featured an abridged version of the movie with a narrator and actual clips from the movie. I listened to that LP all the freaking time. I've lost count of how many times I've seen this movie, but I can safely say that this is the movie that I've watched the most in my life.

Great show y'all. I was in a similar boat as Steph (I think we're around the same age), in that I was a kid during the prequel era, and I loved them at the time, and the originals didn't do much for me. Then when I got older, I came to appreciate the originals much more, and now Empire is one of my favorite movies of all time (can't wait for next week). Funny enough though, I actually overcorrected and started hating on the prequels. Now I have come around to the prequels again, and the sequels are the ones I'm pretty sour on right now. My experience with Star Wars has been a weird roller coaster, and it seems my thoughts and rankings change every time I rematch them. Which is really weird for me because I usually know right away what I think of a movie.

If you think the stepping on Jabba's tail looks silly now then go back and look at the 1997 bug-eyed version... The Greedo scene was so butchered it almost ruins the film... Beru clearly doesn't know Anakin is Vader yet Owen possibly does if you go by the tone of their words after Luke walks out on their lunch, lots of potential to explore this in Obi-Wan... At 7 years old saw A New Hope in the theater in 1982, the film had such an edge to it with burning corpses, a torture droid, all the cantina violence, etc - had no idea George made it for 12 year olds until I was an adult. Children and adults loved this film as is so all the goofiness in the prequels was completely unnecessary...

The bummer thing for me about watching the original films in light of the prequels and clone wars is how it does no favors to the droids. So I can see how Obi Wan might deny knowing R2, but wouldn't R2 tell 3PO he knows that old dude and would tell Luke? Same issue I have with R2 and Yoda. Every time I watch Empire now, and it gets to the Dagobah stuff, I can't help but think how the prequels/clone wars messes up the continuity of the originals with the droids (specifically R2) and who they come across. Don't get me wrong, I don't obsess over it, but it does bug me.
I do love some of the irony though. Like how in the beginning of A New Hope, unbeknownst to Vader, he's looking for the droid he built and his old navigational droid.

I know Empire is the Best Star Wars film but I feel this and Jedi are what Star Wars is to George Lucas however, if Stephen Speilberg or other Directors and Writers did it for him these movies would be EVEN BETTER! I know old video so why bother commenting but I like going back to these and watching them again both the movie and rewatch to see if I still feel the same after experiencing Dune 1 and 2 and Andor. I hope Mandalorian and more shows go back to how OT Trilogy feels and less Prequel and Sequel vibe. Mando Season 3 felt more like Sequel territory as we were starting in OT in Season 1, 2 we were exiting OT with Boba Left OT to Sequel and Mando Season 3 and Ahsoka we are in new trilogy era i feel just from how everything is shot and looks design wise.

Love your show guys. You and RFR have my favorite SW commentary because you're well balanced between having positive and negative takes. But most importantly you're always honest.
You aren't a part of the Fandumb Degenerates that monetized hate. Then hijacked geek culture discourse to indoctrinate and brainwash others to adopt their warped and slanted political ideology.
And haven't succumbed to becoming a part of the access media segment of fandom where everything is overly positive to maintain access to industry perks.
We agree on all things SW most of the time and it's great.
More talk on where fans could get the non-revisionist, unaltered version of the OT like the De-Specialized Edition, Project 4k77, and the Silverscreen edition of SW would've been nice though. Especially with all the mentions of how unhappy you were with most of the 97' alterations as I and many of us were.

But they still haven't stopped being honest about either which is a testament to their integrity. They're going to be truthful no matter the outcome which is why I like them so much.
And most importantly they do so without all the anti-left, anti-sjw, anti woke politically indoctrinating rhetoric that pours out of the fandom Menace incessantly.

I'm gonna defend (sort of) the Han shot first moment. I first saw this movie in 97, special edition. I didn't know anything about Star Wars, never saw it, never heard about it. And I loved it of course. I never once thought anything about the Han scene. He knew Greedo was gonna kill him so he took his gun out and shot him. That's all that I saw. Never even noticed that Greedo got a shot in, and even if I had, it was too quick for it to be self defense. He straight up murdered Greedo because he was gonna get it otherwise. So, while I agree that changing it is silly, I never once got a different message from that scene than people who saw the original. It is unnecessary for sure, but if you don't know any better it doesn't change a thing. Those cgi creatures blocking the screen in Mos Eisley are far more annoying. (And credit where credit is due, the space battle is greatly improved. The original shots, revolutionary as they were, was showing its age there)
