A PASSION TO PROTECT

In Roy Deverell's 1982 film John Aspinall tells the story of his pioneering zoo parks in Kent, England, where the animals are treated as guests rather than exhibits. Aspinall died in 2000 but his son, Damian, ensures that the zoos continue to be run in accordance with his father's unique philosophy. A PASSION TO PROTECT was awarded the Gold Plaque and Silver Hugo at the Chicago International Film Festival.

This is an absolutely classic film. Only 4,700 views in five years? what a shame. It had a huge impact on me in 1982. Today we went to Howletts and I felt anguish that John Aspinall's strong, individual vision was no longer with us. A big bull elephant that didn't like water and ate carrots very daintily. Black rhinos enjoying a mud wallow. A baby elephant suckling.... A baby gorilla too, but very few gorillas to be seen - maybe all sent to Africa? The zoo buys land in Africa, so as to re-home some animals in a natural environment. Now to watch this film and revive old memories.
