3 years on and this video is still helping people make decisions. On paper, going over all the specs, it was pretty even. Hell, the megaboom 3 was probably slightly in the lead. I LOVE my JBL Charge 5! Today I took the Boom 3 back to the shop to exchange it for the Charge 5 (I was originally thinking of getting). I had compared it at home to my old Charge 3 (it has crackly bass now) and realised I couldn't live without the bass. The Charge 5 is a noticeable upgrade from the Charge 3 too.
Heck yeah the charge 5 is a big jump from the other charges and that’s the way it should be in my mind. I’m glad the speaker is something you are enjoying 👍🏾
I have 3 ue megabooms and all 3 started cracking sounds out of them. So I ordered it again on Amazon. Seen your video and canceled it right away. So I just bought the jbl one. Thanks for your help. Praying that I will love this new one.
I bought the Megboom 3 a couple weeks ago and was satisfied with it. Then I noticed I basically had to have the volume as high as it would go and didn't sound that great. I seen your video today at work and immediately went and bought a charge 5 after work and can hear the difference already. I will be returning the Megaboom 3. I've read a lot of reviews on both speakers but tbh they both are great but for me personally I wouldn't buy the Megaboom 3 now as it's been released since 2018 and seems a bit outdated compared to the Charge 5 which is relatively new. Also they're both around the same price so I think the JBL is an easy pick considering you can use it as a power bank as well.
I bought mine in December 2018 ultimate ears, mega boom it was the best at the time the battery doesn’t really last anymore and it sounds a little raspy but after blasting for five years like a whore on Skid Row she was ultimate but now I’m gonna give JBL a try and so far I like it and I’m sure down the road some thing else better will come along in a. Year or two

I saw a JBL Charge 5 lying around at home. My mom probably just bought it out of impulse but doesn't use it. I tried it out and holy crap it sounds amazing!

There's one little thing that I noticed though. The jbl is laying down allowing the sound to bounce off of and be amplified off of your glass table top. This makes a huge difference. I deliberately sit my phone on a glass table top just like that for better and louder sound. Lay the Boom3 down just like the JBL.
The UE MegaBoom is supposed to be 360° sound, and it is supposed to stand up the way Rodney had it. I listened to both, in store, at Target, the JBL Charge 5 sounded better, just like in this video. I bought the JBL Charge 5.

The UE boom 3 is not a bad speaker. But I feel like the JBL edges it out. The JBL has deeper base and and more rich sound to it. I really like how you do your videos and you've earned a sub. Keep up the good work.

I disagree. I think the JBL is worse. Yes, the JBL has a more neutral sound profile out of the box so on some songs, the JBL may sound better, but with EQ, given the wider frequency response, the UE could beat the JBL on any song given the better hardware it has.
Agreed in the video jbl sounded clear, but not a clear controlled test that's comparable. Quick thoughts: Adjust the tones in the Megaboom app mids and highs can be raised thus increasing clarity and volume. Second the speakers are not placed the same. One is vertical well the other is horizontal postion. The vertical position the sound will dissipate into the open area air. The one in horizontal position has the tension of the table and directed at the video. Also the table would act as a deflector in containing the sound a bit and bouncing at the camera or upwards. Speakers only work as they should when placed in a box or with walls around to keep the sound from dissipating and Being less worthy. The functionality of each speaker, Megaboom floats in the river, also has the app to allow on/off. Just a thought.

Well that's for the comparison. Well noted. I'm thinking about the other features as well, such as durability, wireless linking, waterproofing, does the new JBL float? I know it's water resistant. I own a 3 JBL's up to the charge 3 but a friend of mine shits on me at the jobsite. He had the Boom and then the Boom 2. Yes, mystery clarity was there but very directional. The Boom speakers literally fill the room and are better open air. Plus a bit more durability
I'm with you on this one. Megaboom = MegaMUDDY. Tested using Macbook Pro onboard speakers and Airpods Pro on my end. One question though: Did you at any time find the JBL *too* trebl-y, i.e., shrill or grating? I got a little bit of that in the playback, but of course can't know from my end whether it was the JBL or my speakers. Thanks!
Night and day in terms of clarity. Charge 5 also sounds amazing with classical solo style guitar tracks. Make sure to experiment with positioning. Bass can be heard best when it’s close to a wall or a corner wall, in which case it can nicely fill a medium sized lounge room.
Thanks for the comparison! This is really helpful overall. Buttt for me this isn't the best test. The megaboom is facing backwards, so the charge has the advantage there, and also the speakers being played in different order was really confusing. The boom sounded better on a couple songs.
I’ve had a MB 3 for 3 years now it’s a very great speaker and indestructible. I just ordered a Charge 5 to upgrade to something newer. UE is amazing quality and if you want something that can take more beating I recommend it but JBL does have some nicer quality sound. When I got the MB 3 I paid around $129 on sale and they included the table charger and now I got the Charge 5 for $125 it’s great to have them both get whichever you prefer or can find a better deal on.
You could see that loudspeakers of jbl were aimed to the listener, but in case of megaboom it's loudspeakers were located in opposite directions (left and right) and not to face and camera

Yeah out of the box sound was lacking and the EQ is great. But UE needs to come out with new speakers already this booms are what 4 years old now 🥹. I do love their new hyperboom but time for the smaller speakers
sure, the JBL prolly sound better on its own but the key feature of the UE is the pairing with other speakers. If you have at least 2 UE, you can pair them and switch to true R L sound. The pairing feature with UE adds value. You can pair infinite speakers of multiple UE types.
The thing is that remote power on and off is a vital function I'm after when choosing a speaker. It plays a huge role in my daily use of a speaker. If I have to physically walk to the speaker to turn it on every time I use it, I'll be quite discouraged and more often than not simply stop there from using it. The remote power on and off itself alone is a breeze of fresh air, cos it makes you feel very good about having such a speaker always at your easy disposal right by your hand with your phone. So encouraging that even if when I feel no desire to listen to something yet no other things to do, I will just turn it on and have a random listen. Thus, help please, other than UE, what other speakers have such a function? I have been searching and searching, but never had the luck to find another brand to give me a new choice yet. Maybe HyperBoom will be the ultimate choice without compromise in sound quality if no other brands offer such function?

You should get a bigger speaker then as portable speakers the main appeal is that you carry it with you. If uts going to be stagnant its better to go for a jbl partybox
Main downside of the charge 5 is the shape, i use my speaker at work and it just sits in my table (I make cabinets so there's lots of shaking) it just rolled off the table until I made a wooden stand to hold it in place

I think it’s just JBL is newer and more update sound wise. The UE speakers are so old tech wise other than the hyperboom. I think when UE makes a new speaker it will kill it

It was also max. My sister always makes sure each speaker is on max. Unless one has a max volume chime when she presses play. In that case she will do one notch before max on each speaker 😊👍
Were the songs played from the same source? (Phone etc) sound settings from each phone could have played a factor such as the EQ settings. Just wondering thanks!
Yes everything was the same EQ we never add unless I say before the video. I know for this video we went with the default or signature sound of UE. Because JBL doesn’t have a EQ app

there is no adjustable EQ in JBL 5. And you can adjust EQ in Ultimate 3 whatever you want. Ultimate is the best

the jbl has a very nice bass, indeed. perhaps the megaboom can't compare to its warmth but it's super loud and has good battery life to make up for it

While listen to it on playback the high end does sound really bright but in person I didn’t get that harsh sound coming from it.

Thanks for the comparison! This is really helpful overall. Buttt for me this isn't the best test. The megaboom is facing backwards, so the charge has the advantage there, and also the speakers being played in different order was really confusing. The boom sounded better on a couple songs.
No the MB is not I get that comment a lot 😊lol. The back of the MB has a strap on the back to be clipped to hang.

I’ve had a MB 3 for 3 years now it’s a very great speaker and indestructible. I just ordered a Charge 5 to upgrade to something newer. UE is amazing quality and if you want something that can take more beating I recommend it but JBL does have some nicer quality sound. When I got the MB 3 I paid around $129 on sale and they included the table charger and now I got the Charge 5 for $125 it’s great to have them both get whichever you prefer or can find a better deal on.

You could see that loudspeakers of jbl were aimed to the listener, but in case of megaboom it's loudspeakers were located in opposite directions (left and right) and not to face and camera

The UE MegaBoom is supposed to be 360° sound, and it is supposed to stand up the way Rodney had it. I listened to both, in store, at Target, the JBL Charge 5 sounded better, just like in this video. I bought the JBL Charge 5.

Yeah out of the box sound was lacking and the EQ is great. But UE needs to come out with new speakers already this booms are what 4 years old now 🥹. I do love their new hyperboom but time for the smaller speakers
sure, the JBL prolly sound better on its own but the key feature of the UE is the pairing with other speakers. If you have at least 2 UE, you can pair them and switch to true R L sound. The pairing feature with UE adds value. You can pair infinite speakers of multiple UE types.

The thing is that remote power on and off is a vital function I'm after when choosing a speaker. It plays a huge role in my daily use of a speaker. If I have to physically walk to the speaker to turn it on every time I use it, I'll be quite discouraged and more often than not simply stop there from using it. The remote power on and off itself alone is a breeze of fresh air, cos it makes you feel very good about having such a speaker always at your easy disposal right by your hand with your phone. So encouraging that even if when I feel no desire to listen to something yet no other things to do, I will just turn it on and have a random listen. Thus, help please, other than UE, what other speakers have such a function? I have been searching and searching, but never had the luck to find another brand to give me a new choice yet. Maybe HyperBoom will be the ultimate choice without compromise in sound quality if no other brands offer such function?
Out of all the speakers I test the UE I tested have the power on your phone. Hyperboom and UE are the speakers I tested that has that I believe.

You should get a bigger speaker then as portable speakers the main appeal is that you carry it with you. If uts going to be stagnant its better to go for a jbl partybox

Main downside of the charge 5 is the shape, i use my speaker at work and it just sits in my table (I make cabinets so there's lots of shaking) it just rolled off the table until I made a wooden stand to hold it in place

I think it’s just JBL is newer and more update sound wise. The UE speakers are so old tech wise other than the hyperboom. I think when UE makes a new speaker it will kill it

Hey Rodney you mentioned the UE was on max volume, what volume was the JBL Charge playing at? I'm guessing it wasn't near it's max.
It was also max. My sister always makes sure each speaker is on max. Unless one has a max volume chime when she presses play. In that case she will do one notch before max on each speaker 😊👍
Were the songs played from the same source? (Phone etc) sound settings from each phone could have played a factor such as the EQ settings. Just wondering thanks!
Yes everything was the same EQ we never add unless I say before the video. I know for this video we went with the default or signature sound of UE. Because JBL doesn’t have a EQ app
