Both the new JBL Charge 5 and Sony XB33 are rocking all new speaker set ups from their predecessors. Specifically the Charge 5 is rocking a new tweeter over the Charge 4 where as the XB33’s speaker set up is drastically different from its predecessors cause it has new triangular drivers and passive radiators that shoot out its sides. Now both of these speakers sound good but if you’re looking into getting a mid sized speaker lets see which’s ones right for you cause the Charge 5 and XB33 do have some crucial differences.

My brother gave me his XB33 a few days ago and he'd only had it for about a couple of months. I was blown away by the sound quality. No wonder lots of people love it.
That’s a good brother.
Keep him close and again that’s a good brother not a lot of those in this cruel selfish world.
Honestly I love Sony speaker but not a big fan of design tho
@@konge3589 me too, I'm in love with energy systems designs but they're not great sounding :/
Ong on c that shit look asf charge 5 is bad
Dope vid but you forgot to mention that the sony speaker got a live sound mode which is pretty fckin dope brings out all the instrumentation in songs you legit hear sounds in songs that you normally never hear when they playin in standard mode💯💯
Cool for my type of music. Alternative/soft rock
Thanks for the video! This really helped me make my decision! I need something with a bit of a warmer sound so I'm gonna go with the xb33. Sounded really bomb in the store. I'm using mine to replace my car stereo for a time being since my 2014 corollas stereo died.
I believe the xb33 has a less tightly woven mesh to let the internal lighting shine through
i think you’re right, the weave isn’t so much loose as it is open. The aperture on the weave is large and is layered over a mesh, to give it more rigidity
it also allows for more sound to come through. a tightly woven mesh reduces sound clarity
Not to mention sound
I like the extra treble of the JBL as well as the longer battery life. Thanks for the video. Greetings from Jamaica.
That extra treble means zero mids and a lot less bass. You can always adjust the eq on the sony. Can't on the jbl
@@iWubmusic No the Extra Treble comes from a separate tweeter in the JBL. But it also got a speaker for Mids and two radiators for Bass. That's why you're not lacking of Mids and bass. ;)
@@iWubmusic Lol! I am using Poweramp ap on phone and I can make equqlizer by myself in it)))))believe me it is better
@@Ju5t4fun_25 This is a terrible way of explaining things. Do you think that speakers that lacks bass and mids just have tweeters in them ? Of course not !
Charge 5 is nicely tuned, end of story.
By the way tweeters doesn't always mean better highs. If the tuning or the crossover are wrong, speakers without tweeters but that are tuned correctly will sound better. It's always about the tuning in reality.
@@ThibautMahringer No i explained, why the extra highs doesn't effect the mids and bass of the speaker. Because theyre from a separated driver. While mids and bass coming from another speaker. Sure speakers without tweeters can sound really good. But its always better to have more drivers because it means less distortion and a cleaner sound in general. That's why JBL decided to add this high frequency speaker.
One of the better videos, keep up the good work. Thanks brother.
I owned a Sony XB33 and my sister has JBL Charge 5...as I've observed, the JBL has sound brighter while my Sony sound more bass-kicked and less vocal. But unfortunately, JBL sounds monophonic while Sony has stereo and I can hear its left and right channel separation especially when I set the Sony music player app to Studio effect. And through the EQ preset I have, it sounds perfect.
How is the battery life on the sony with extra bass on while the the lights are off?
@@HermitKE 21 hours lights off and stamina mode on, around 14 hours bass mode on and lights off,and with live mode you get 7-9 hours maybe again lights off, note that these numbers are for 50% volume,as you get it higher the hours will drop of course but if you get a power bank you're golden.
@@alexz1189 Thank you for the detailed response! This has helped greatly.
Which you love the most...???
@@alexz1189 I've got a Sony xb12 and I'm looking to upgrade in the near future. I appreciate your feedback to my responses thus far. I'm thinking I'll end up going with the JBL when the time comes as the sound seems comparable but the battery isn't and that's a large metric for me.
Nonetheless, thank you for your help

Sony remain its full sound balance in full volume.while jbl gets a bit missy.bass get low
How come no mention of the "Priority on sound quality" mode that the Sony XB33 has! It playbacks using the higher quality AAC and LDAC codecs with compatible devices that support them. The XB33 is better than Charge 5 with my iPad Pro and the audio sync (latency) is absolutely superb! Charge 5 seems not as perfect in my opinion, may be cos it only uses SBC. If you watch videos I would definitely go for the Sony. Have to press the Vol + button and then the bluetooth button to flip from the normal SBS codec to the higher quality one. 3 blinks indicates regular and 2 blinks indicates the better sound mode. It does get a bit louder and clearer with my iPad Pro and I am happy. I think for Apple iOS the Sony is better as most Apple devices will automatically support the AAC codec. Whereas most Androids will support LDAC which is supported by Sony XB33 too! For Android, have to go to the Developer section in Settings and choose a different bluetooth codec. Please share experiences as this has made a difference for me. It is hard to find reasonably priced bluetooth speakers that support AAC and LDAC - Sony XB 33 seems rare in that respect and is a winner in my book!
I bought JBL charge 5 im really happy with the sound it has especially when listening to techno or some old school beats.
Does it have a good amount of bass??

@@4Y4ZATA Thanks, I'll check it out.
@@4Y4ZATA Thanks! I just switched the Volume Level in Spotify from "normal" to "Loud"
I made a huge mistake getting the jbl charge 4 over the 33. I have the 43 and I loved it but I got the 4 because it was a tad cheaper and well that was for a reason the charge gets loud and treble but it sucks badly with clarity and bass
I prefer Sony over JBL in terms of sound quality.. when JBL plays with 100% volume, it become hash no bass only lower bass which cannot handle hash ness around 6-7khz..
Bro I do appreciate yours videos 👍👍👍 I wish you would make a video upon LG PL7
In truth apart from all features the only thing I care about it whether the speaker can switch devices without having to unpair and pair them every time... It gets really annoying doing this...

When he does a sound test, close your eyes, or just dont look at your phone, you can tell when the jbl is playing, it just sounds 100x more crisp and clean, bass is more of a punch too

@Junior Colin Woaw What's Different between Netflix & Flixzone 🤔🤔🤔
The JBL does sound better however, where i live the JBL costs twice the price of the Sony. Sony it is for me.
Its the opposite to us JBL cost so cheap and Sony is too expensive.
@@averilazurbatoy6853 not really on Amazon I seen the xb43 for like a $118 plus tax
You hearing it with the right speakers? Lmao the jbl sounds awful compared. The sony sounds full and full of life where the jbl sounds tinny. I have them both and I was really sadden by the jbl and they lowered the bass. It gets decently loud but it's very forward with no separation in the instruments
What mic used for speaker test recording? What room? (its have acoustic treatment? ). Current record show equaly bad sound represention, both speaker have non-linear frequency reponse and tembral coloring, bad resolution just do it different ways. As i remeber sound of jbl IRL its play much better then on this record. (im listening it on good studio DAC and speakers)
Maybe good idea time by time play original sound for comparsion but its have sens only if you record stuff good enough. For now its sound like you recorded on internal camera mic or external chip lawayer.
I just bought the Sony xb33 off of Amazon and I’m excited!
Well there you go ladies and gentlemen the deal breaker for me is is the audio jack to be able to hardwire I don't care how good the speakers sound which one is better than which hard wiring is very important especially for battery life
you can get usb audio through the charge 5 in demo mode the problem is its for stores so none of the buttons at the top work (no party boost) and it charges the speakers while its plugged in However jbl can push firmware updates to the device and if the usb c on the charge 5 is a smart in/out usb c they should be able to push a firmware update with a toggle for audio over usb this would also allow you to use a usb c to 3.5 mm adapter where as it sits right now in demo mode the port needs to detect power from another device to wake up where instead they should be able to code it where when you toggle on the usb audio the port wakes up an listens for any incoming audio.
Thank you. I bought a Charge5 from Woot last week. Snared it for $125.00
I bought an XB33 about a year ago. Overall it's a very refined speaker. The tech is pretty current, so it will age well. I wish it were more powerful. And an illuminated control panel would be helpful. Aside from that, I'm happy with it.
I just wondered 🤔! What speaker do you use?
Walmart has the charge 5 for $140 so I picked it up the Sony at Best Buy $119
I had the Charge 5 and both the appearance of the speaker and the sound quality is amazing, but I felt that it loses a lot of bass when the volume is turned up to more than 60%, and being mono I decided to sell it and buy the XB33, I'm going to try it and see if it convinces me more.
What do you thing is better?
@@ferhatmur9710 Charge 5, louder than the XB33 and more clear sound. What I like about the XB33 is the Live mode because you can hear the stereo a lot better. The materials of the speaker is better on the Charge 5 too.

Why they cut out the 3.5 jack if they didn't put aptx ll bluetooth? They don't know that we have lipsync? ( when is about 🎥🍿)
I’ve had the xb33 for two years and I got tired dragging it around the house so I decided I wanted another one for downstairs. I love the Sony but it’s now a €100 more now then what I got it for two yrs ago. So I bought the charge 5 this week. I connected this to my phone and it blew me away. The sony is no match to the JBL. I just turned the mids down by one in equaliser. The sony I had to change everything and it’s still now as clear. The bass is fantastic on both. But the JBL produces more sound. It’s a matter of taste. If you prefer a warmer sound, the Sony would be better. But I prefer a more realistic sound which is why I prefer the JBL. It actually amazed me straight from the box. I just hope the battery is as good as the Sony’s because I’ve heard ppl complain about it and the Sony’s lasts forever
when do u think the new Sony XB33/34 in 2021?
Thx for the Video,
I would ve liked some comment about the sound of voices, I got the xb33 like last years spring at a good price, but I had been disappointed about the voices, regardless of the song I listenend to, all the voices sounded muffled, as if they sang through a thick pillow, it was extremely noticable to me, so didn’t like using it any more. I still kept the Sony, I had almost the same with the charge 4, now I got a big discount on the charge 5 and damn! What a difference. vocals sound soooo much better now. I’ll sell xb33 and definitely keep the JBL, they had cost me almost the same. I’m interested to what Sony changes the next gen.
You guys probably have bad models because mines don’t sound bad!!!
I still have the JBL Link 20. Will the charge 5 sound noticeably much better?
Yup
The Charge 5 now has an equalizer through the JBL app. Now you can turn that bass up even more!
Lol! I have Poweramp ap on phone with equalizer and its more better))))Charge is best yes?
How's the sound quality bass sound on Sony? Better than iphone speakers?
Jbl seems to have tight punch than Sony. And also that extra tweeter is giving sharper highs adding more dimension to the sound.
might have missed the xb33 STEREO pairing feature part of the review or im not aware of a jbl one that everyone else is but that seems like a huge missing feature from this review to me if it is missing. and if sound quality is an issue NOT combining left and right audio together, as with stereo pairing, into every separate speaker connected is a plus for me.. need two of them to take advantage of the stereo feature. the xb does have party pairing button as well as stereo pairing for one other sony speaker. too bad every individual speaker doesnt just have a left right or mid/both channels option for a bunch of speakers in stereo/surround sound.. or woofer for one big xb44. highlighting the indicator options like shutting off extra bass and lights was helpful
STOP REMOVING THE HEADPHONE JACK! USB-C supports audio transfer why tf would you make it purely a sharing port?
Lo sony suenan muy bien!! 👍 pero algo que me gusto de Jbl son los bajos profundos, mientras que los de sony son mas secos a mi parecer.excelente video amigo😉
I tried both in the store and choosed jbl. More louder, better bass. I believe maybe better quality and higher chance of meeting someone with the jbl to connect at a party. I love it.

My flip 5 is too powerful than my new xb 33. Sounds no camparison both items jbl has too powerful sony has a good quality of sounds but li'l bit disappointed the volume of xb33 just a minimum in flip 5. Ilove flip 5 compared to xb33. now i plan to buy jbl charge 5 and I'm so excited

I just bought the XB33 for 89.99 new which to me is a great deal.
The XB33 is pretty phenomenal to me.. Such deep bass for a small item
Cant decide between these two. I just want a good deep bass without the use of custom EQ.
Go blindly for sony
I have the sony.. The bass is deep. Not sure about the bass on JBL

At 3:28 the xb33 battery size is 2700 mah which to get thoses numbers is actually really good and which means it have better amp effiency vs the jbl as it has a 6,500 mah battery

I love the bass on the Sony and I like the cleaner sound on the JBL
Sony xb33 even though is advertised as “extra bass” has like no bass lol. I don’t know what other people are talking about
Can I charge the JBL and blast music at same time? I cannot on the flip 5 it dies and turns off. I can on the XB-33. That would be a deciding factor for me on who the winner is.
If you use a phone charging brick (which essentially fast charges the battery) you can do this, otherwise it will die with volume turned to max. The battery isn't designed for fast charging tho so I'd use it sparingly
I was going to get the charge 5 but was said it didn't have a Aux port..
I would really like everyone's opinion. I recently bought the JBL charge 5. I've had the three for a while and loved the sound profile, it has just been cutting out before dead battery. PS: I also wanted to mention that my Charge 5 was only 2 months old... so the battery problems that I read on the internet turned out to be true... The charge 5 is a better speaker.
I presume that for this price point they output stereo sound on their own or do you need to pair them by two's for stereo fx? Jbl sounds more open by the way..more defined sound
The Sony XB33 produces stereo audio by itself because of its dual transducers whilst the JBL Charge 5 only produces mono audio. Personally I find stereo audio has more clarity over mono but with these sized speakers a lot of people do not notice a difference.
Both speakers don't put out stereo, you have to pair a second speaker to get stereo audio. Yeah, it's insane that a tiny mono speakers costs that much these days. These companies make a hell of a lot of money from these speakers that are certainly very cheap to build.
@@olli2591 Most (if not all) Bluetooth speakers with at least two woofers are stereo, whether you can hear it or not is another story.

Same here. No regrets
Here’s my take… I compared the XB33 that I had to the charge 4 and hands down the Sony beat the charge 4 by a lot… charge 4 sounded muddy and I just couldn’t do it, xb33 had way cleaner sound with decent bass. Idk how better is the charge 5 compared to the charge 4 and I keep hearing nothing but good things from it.
The only thing was that the XB33 doesn’t get that loud in my opinion, but sound quality was really good. Again… sound can be subjective so everyone needs to hear this on their own to make a final decision.
I have the jbl charge 5 and I love it!
For me. The JBL is more special. ❤️
How do know the XB33 is 30watts? Sony refused to publish the wattage b/c they know it's lower than its competitors. This explains why the Sony sounds too low and muted.
Not really man, actually sony somehow sounds better than the jbl charge 4-5, with live mode on it just wipes the floor with them, i got the chance to try all 3 of them and i ended up buying the sony.
Wipes the floor? I disagree. I've owned the sony for awhile now. Got it to replace my charge 3. Which sounds better than the sony. And now that the charge 5 has seperate tweeter it sounds way better than the sony. It also sounds louder which is my complaint about the sony. The sony does have an EQ adjustment but the jbl still has a 'wider' sound and louder.
I got my charge 5 for 109 on sale at Walmart JUST because they had to use more tape on the box :)
Charge 5 doesn’t have any EQ adjustability. XB33 does and after two mins of tweaking the EQ, it’s freaking awesome.
Use software EQ?
You're welcome.

True but you can make adjustments on your smartphone even though you can't make adjustments on thr Charge 5 unit.
Not anymore after last update. Charge 5 EQ works pretty well
I ordered sony xb33 today, the red one, got it for 90€, arriving in few days
where did you order? can you share?
charge 5 for sure, i usually use mine for listening to videos on my ipad or playing music in the yard to play with the dog and its good for both indoor and outdoor use. outdoor about 80 to 90% if your far away and indoors around 30 to 50% depending on how well the audio is in videos. if the audio is compressed and low quality in videos making it very low volume then you need it on like 70% but for me i mostly use it indoors can use it for 3 days straight before the light starts blinking red so its good in sound and battery. is not fancy with lights but you cant have it all its why i also got the pulse 5.
It ain’t 2016 we don’t need no auto jack, just make it so when you charge your phone are can connect to it through that also instead of using Bluetooth…
I went from 1 XB40 to 2 XB33s and I'm in two minds as to whether I like them. The party mode is alright but it stops the speakers from working in stereo. I thought 2 of the speakers working in tandem would allow for more volume but I'm guessing stupid E.U. rules put that idea in the bin because having 2 speakers connected at the same time makes no difference to volume. I'm considering sending these speakers back and buying the bigger brother to the XB33s.
That's because you don't know what you're doing I had boat 33 s43 and each speaker is at the same time as one so you do double the sound some know what you doing before you speak
??? I don't see how the EU would have anything to do with that.
It's physics, having 2 speakers playing at 90db doesn't give you 180db
Let's say a speaker outputs 90dB at 20watts at 1 meter. In perfect conditions if you double the power of that speaker, basically it would output 93dB. So as stated above, double the volume is not what you may assume.
@@kimekholm7178 One same speaker more, it means 3db more; not the double db's.
@@GODSONDJ that’s exactly what I said lol
I m caring about reliability...had the flip 5 bad in exact two years, passed away...love jbl sound but i think sony has more reliability as a brand...every help and opinion is accepted....
Sony is the first speakers I've had that haven't crapped out in less than a year. And if you don't abuse them like I did the ports should last however long you wanna use them. If you drain them every day battery's probably good for 2-3 years before replacement.
If there were an option to purchase without lights blinking, instead of option to turn off within the app I would purchase it… I like my charge 4 and 5

Jbl speaker coil wire is made of aluminum, while sony is just a normal standard coil.

Open sound by JBL do not means automatically better. I find that the Sony has better overall sound, Sony bass are deeper.
Another important thing that many youtubers miss in speaker comparison, is the sound quality in low volume, like in morning time during a breakfast or a romantic dinner or as a background speaker. I'm sure both will excel but Sony maybe better at lower volume because that JBL 10w twitter will take over all the high frequencies vocals and twits, I mean the sound on JBL will be just nosier. Let me know if you have both speaker which is better in low volume around 10 to 20%.
Can you do a comparison with the Charge 4 and the Sony Xb33
I did that in a store, charge 4 is simply dead meat compared to xb33 :D
Pero el XB33 tiene Equalizador y al ajustarlo con los agudos y medios altos suena super bien, aparte tiene la opción Live Mode, y esta hace que el sonido sea super amplio para series y películas, incluso las canciones suenan más amplias con este modo activo
