  • Today we're asking the tough questions. What if Shepard was never resurrected by the Lazarus Project in Mass Effect 2? How would Shepards absence affect the story in Mass Effect 3? This is an interesting question which i've been meaning to answer for some time now.
These are just my own theories & opinions.

Thought I'd add a couple of points: the clone doesn't seem to have Shepard's memories, directly; as it says that it took six months of neural implanting, just to learn how to 'human'. I'd presume it just read up on Shep's exploits, whilst learning. And the Virmire survivor was only on Horizon because the Alliance was looking into rumours of Shepard's return: without Shepard, they wouldn't be there... Flip that around for Tali & Garrus, though; since without our help, they'd both have been killed on the missions we find them on...

Yeah, if Shepard is dead, VS isn't on Horizon. What happens then, though? Hard to say. They do become the second human Spectre, so while they wouldn't know to have Mordin to start the whole plan to stop the Collectors, they could have been arguably sent to stop the Arrival and maaaaybe pull off at least parts of ME3. I'd say if Shep couldn't be revived, TIM would send cryptic hints/clues to the Alliance/Virmire survivor, much like he did to get them there on Horizon. They suspected Shep was working for Cerberus, remember?
And then Ash/Kaidan would take over. They get Spectre status in 3 anyway, so they'd have the authority to do the same stuff with diplomacy or whatever. It probably wouldn't go as well, just like with other replacements in 3… but I think it could be done.
Otherwise, TIM would recruit Archangel. He knows Archangel had his own team and was damn good with it, almost taking down Omega. He has the dossier right from the start.

When the Reapers attack Earth the planet is defended by at least 3 fleets under Hakket's command. That's more than enough to crush some Collector ships. And you can bet your ass that at least a few ships are outfitted with thanix canons since the Turians and Humans are working together since the events ME 1.
The Collectors are not as powerfull as the Reapers they are their slaves and I highly doubt that the Reapers kept enough indoctrinated Protheans/Collectors including ships to call it an armada.
It's more likely that the Collectors would've come to Earth in order to harvest humanity after the Reapers crushed most of the resistence.

I disagree that the clone Shepard would’ve been inherently bad. He turned bad because he was disposed as second class asset behind the real Shepard.
If he wakes up to take the role of the real Shepard, then he builds an entirely different personality.
Regardless of it, they never explained where did the clone get N7 training. They only cloned his body, not his skills and knowledge.
Since he had like 6months of training maximum (most of it is spent on conspiring and not training), he should be a very weak enemy.

    • @thundercrash4775
      @thundercrash4775 2 года назад

I suspect they had the N7 training the same way that Grunt got his training. Which is probably also how C!Shepard had the original's memories (cloning doesn't work that way).
If that is the case, then it's still a more flawed version of Shepard. These are not memories C!Shepard experienced, it would be more analogious to reading them from a book.
I think that would make C!Shepard more suseptable to Cerberus loyalty and ideology, a fatal weakness given what happens when the Reapers arrive.
Not to mention, this would be a Shepard more prone to dying in the suicide mission. They wouldn't necessarily have the noble resolve to hold against overwhelming odds in the Skyllian Blitz, the mental fortitude to survive Akuze, or the savage determination to devastate Torfan. They wouldn't necessarily have the indefinable quality that caused Nihlus to nominate the original Shepard as a SPECTRE.
For C!Shepard, the Collector base would BE their Blitz, their Akuze, their Torfan. And I think we can agree, the Collector base carried a much greater risk of failure compared to those events.
Especially if this is a Shepard who doesn't help Garrus track down Sidonus, whom doesn't defend Tali to her people, whom Miranda doesn't feel comfortable asking for help with Oriana.

    • @TheChabowski
      @TheChabowski 2 года назад

They do point out that the clone only learned how to function through neural implants, meaning it's probably Brooks' influence that made a "bad" Shepard.
Since they can apparently tank-teach N7 level combat training (and VI simulate N7s in the Armax arena), Cerberus would have been able to grow a squad of Shepards of every combat class if they'd tried.

    • @juzoli
      @juzoli 2 года назад

@@TheChabowski That’s how a generic soldier could be trained.
If tanks and simulators could mass produce N7 soldiers, Shepard wouldn’t be unique in first place.
Without these, clone Shepard would be on a level of a 6 month baby, learning what object permanence is. With these tools, it is possible to grow basic soldiers, which Shepard kills 50 per mission.

  • @Rick-Raven

I think Miranda could still assemble some type of team together; but a team where their personal problems are mostly not solved, but I don't see Jack as a good example to use for leadership skills since she's just the 22nd century version of a Karen, she gets pissed off at everything. She wasn't really needed on the team, you already have 3 Biotics such as Miranda, Jacob, and Samara (although depending on how you have Shepard acting, he's not always the best leader). Garrus might come close, but still the leadership skills and the personality traits that Shepard had (giving speeches, talking one on one with the others, helping them with their problems and the history he had with everything else) would be very hard to replace. If Miranda, Garrus and a few others could somehow pull it off, there would probably be a lot of casualties after the final battle. But that's just dealing with the Omega 4 Relay mission, almost everything else in the galaxy would be a mess, but that's what happens you write one character into basically becoming the messiah.

The vorcha would have been too much for Mordin to handle alone and mixed with the blue sun's taking over probably would have led to his death and the continued spread of the plague. Which would probably lead to Arias death
Grunt wouldn't have been saved or become a member of clan urdonot, leaving them significantly weaker. Other clans never liked Wrexs plan and I don't think it would have been long before going to war with Wherloc ultimately leading to his death.
Thane never reunites with his son and would eventually die alone
    Jack says in ice prison
Miranda's sister would have been taken by her father
Samara kills the cops for trying to detain her and continues hunting Morinth while she keeps killing.
Tali and Reeger would die on Halestrom after being pinned by geth (if Tali even could survive freedoms progress without Shepard killing the mec)
Javik ends up in cereberus hands If he's found at all
Udina could have successfully killed the council of cereberus goes forward with that plan down the road.
Legion spent his time tracking Sheppard so without him what does Legion do? Fight the old machines until he's kidnapped and trapped as that becan thing forever?

Thus, what if the Catalyst started seeing itself as part of the problem it was supposed to create and therefor started grooming Shepard as a sort of force to complete its mission. Way too many of the missions go 'just right' for Shepard narroratively, so it would make sense that the Catalyst may have been manipulating things from the shadows to make sure that the Crucible was built and a person 'worthy' of making the final decision was at the final battle. After all, the Catalyst is effectively the citadel, so if the Catalyst truly wanted things to go as 'normal' for the cycle, it could have just indoctrinated everyone aboard the Citadel once the Reaper invasion began, as all other Reaper tech has been shown to have the capacity to do.

Shiala, probably. She has the Prothean cipher just like Shepard, is a powerful biotic, knows Nazara, is at least more immune to Indoctrination than Shepard, and has her own "crew". Not the best crew, but with a lil investigation into Shepard's mission in ME, TIM or Miranda could've learned about her and tried to recruit her off of Feros to be their tip of the spear against the Reapers. Probably wouldn't be a fan of Cerberus, but would probably be pragmatic enough to recognize the Reaper threat and use Cerberus to fight it. Tali and Garrus would recognize her from ME, which might be enough to get them to join up. As for the others, she can literally share the vision and cipher with them, to show them the threat. And if she can share the cipher, don't they all get to be "Protheans"? Understand the language, use the technology, etc? Shiala could have had an arguably more powerful and united crew than Shepard did in ME2. Honestly, I was always disappointed we left her on Feros and took Liara with us. Shiala is a warrior, has the cipher, and didn't Javik say the Asari were meant to win the war. If there was one Asari capable of doing that, it's Shiala.

The only 2 missions after Shepard's death is the lair and the arrival. For the things that happened in 3 Liara as the shadow broker (she would have managed to stop him without Shepard) would have help the defeat the reapers. The galaxy wouldn't stop for Shepard's death, people like to survive you know and with a common enemy they would have.

It's worse than that. Both Tali and Garrus would be dead, since Shepard saves them on Freedom's Progress and Omega. And without Shepard and Mordin's intervention on Tuchanka, Maelon may cure the genophage for the blood pack. Which would lead to Wrex getting killed and another Krogan Rebellion. The heretics would use their virus to reprogram the rest of the geth, giving the Proto-reaper all the help it would need to storm the Citadel.

There's one person who MIGHT, though the chances are mega slim; Anderson. He might have been able to use Shepard's name to rally some of the same forces, though I'm not sure he'd have worked with Cerberus at all. More likely he'd be all "thanks for the ship!" and run off to collect the team himself, but for the sake of the galaxy, there's a world where he too reluctantly accepts the help.

Sure, they would be later on the scene, but the human Reaper probably still wouldnt be complete for a long while, giving them a chance, even if it still ends with more colonies kidnapped. TIM could probably influence the council enough to investigate these colonies at some point, and maybe even send the same dossiers to the other spectre to give them a team.
It wouldnt be the same, but I think the galaxy would still have a chance that way.

Completely off topic here, but watching Shepard dance in the outro makes me wonder why no one has made a mod for just that.
I know watching them be so bad at dancing while at the same time being awesome at everything else is the whole point, but it would still be fun to see a mod that especially during the Citadel DLC party, has them dancing the usual way and getting mocked only for them to bust out some sick dance moves and leave the crew stunned.
As for the topic at hand.
It would make for some very interesting DLC if they released a video showing the fall of the galaxy had Shepard not returned.
I know it would be the ultimate downer, but if it was fully voice acted and showing attempts to try and work together, I'd still pay to see it.
Hell I'd love a remake of the ending video fully animated, especially if we got to watch the rebuilding of the Citadel and how it being now above Earth impacted things.
I've also heard that Ambassador Osoba who you help by finding his son's dogtags is who replaces Udina on the Council so seeing how him being indebted to Shepard would influence his role as the human representative.

I imagine that if the Lazarus project would have failed, Cerberus would attempt to mold something, remotely similar to the Shepard out of the clone. First, I think that if Shepard died - BioWare would make their pet Liara T'Soni replace him and be smarter, more charismatic and overall just the best commander there ever was because commanding Alliance is just like running a digsite - you need patience and determination and all will fall into place. If they needed to give Liara any special skill - they would give her the skills out of nowhere like they always do.
Second, Geth vs Quarian war or Krogan genophage arent essential at all - they are 2 worthless side quests that only improve how the galaxy gets destroyed after Crucible was used.
Third, I actually think that the Clone would be way more interested in the collectors BECAUSE he wouldnt be thrown away after Cerberus got the real him. That guy experienced what happens to a file when you empty a bin AND because old SHepard existed he couldnt even fool the team to replace the original - if there was no other Shepard, I think he would be actually a good Renegade Shepard.
Fourth, with Thanix canons and upgraded defences 1 Reaper wouldnt cut it. They would have to do the Cerberus coup AND the Reaper + Geth attack at the same time which wouldnt happen yet.
Fifth - if the galaxy was in any way losing they would introduce another "THE C" as in The Citadel, The Cypher, The Conduit, The Crucible, The Catalyst and whipe the floor with reapers and galaxy would win.
Sixth - James was already looking into Collectors there is non-zero probability that Alliance would whipe out the collectors themselves.

  • @Kojak0

You forgot Kai Leng... That guy could have picked up the mantle and probably gotten a whole bunch of either the squad or other people from the Illusive Man's apparently endless rooster. Now, I doubt he would have been as effective as Shepard, but he would probably have gotten quite far. The reason I say this is because I don't get the impression he is very smart, and some of Shepard's actions hint at at least above average intelligence, not to mention he cares about people in a way I don't think Leng does - if anything I would guess Leng sees people as tools. And a guy like that would have been hard pressed to recruit Mordin and stop the collectors because of that reason.

I think Vega would have taken Shepard place, the Alliance WAS doing something about the missing colonists, just low key, Vega said during ME3 the he had adquiered intel to destroy the collectors, but in the end was not needed because Shepard took out the Collector base on his own.
That said, while that may resolve ME2 events leading up to the point where ME3 starts, i just dont see how Vega could resolve the issues presented on ME3.
The Geths would have been a 100% on the reapers side and the Quarians would have been screwed, but thats not really important, you could remove the Quarians and the Geth out of the ME3 story and nothing would really change in the end.
I think he may have a chance to resolve the situacion with the Krogan, just not as well as Shepard could.
BUT the part im really worried about is EDI... EDI is a key piece to the ME3 story, just as Liara is, EDI is the 3rd more important character for the story, and whiout ME2 Shepard there is no EDI.
