I've travelled all around the world. I've always stayed at quality hotels. Pretty nice hotels around $50/night in places like Bangkok, Siem Reap, Beijing and Cairo to name a few. When I wanted go sightseeing with a guide or required transportation I made arrangements through the hotel. I usually paid a little more ($3 to $5) but it was worth not dealing with the hassle and/or getting scammed. It also helps if one becomes familiar with the public transportation system. Trains of Germany, subways of Moscow, and city rail systems of Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur.

Me and my partner are coming to Thailand in July and we have been looking at finding a local for a 'tour guide' (I use the term loosely as we don't want to be chauffeured around). Essentially someone who is keen for an adventure, who speaks the language. Do you think this is achievable or are we being naive?
That's painful to watch. Newbies: ANYTIME you are getting time pressure and other kinds of pressure ("but today special day!!") from a tout, it's bad news. Touts in general are bad news. Just say "mai ao khap/ka" and walk away. Does it make sense that they're getting so excited over charging you 20 baht? No it doesn't, obviously. They're getting excited for the kickback money they'll get from the shops they're going to drag you to that you don't want to go to.

I just came back from Bangkok with my family. We still see these people around Wat Phra Kaew / Grand Palace. It pays to do your homework, plan your destinations using Google Maps and know the public transport. Just look confident on the street and feign ignorance when approached. Surely the pros outweigh the cons in this city!
Just take it easy dude, don't get too much overthinking, as long as you don't rent staff from undentified locals, don't talk back to strangers who are trying to sell you stuff or anything, just said Mai, you should be fine, actually when first time I come to Thailand I have the same feeling, but after going there several times, I think not too much different from my country, even my country sometimes more dangerous but now it's getting much better. Besides that avoid tour from locals shop, nowdays we have super equipment we always brought along, called smartphone, just reserved tour, taxi, everything from reliable applications, your holiday will be heaven, have try this and believes me it's all better than going out from hotel to local shop for tour just to get chances for you to get scammed.
All these are scams...basically, they get you into a cheap tuk tuk and take you to a number of shops "for looking". The shops pay the tuk tuk a commission - after 30-40 minutes of being dragged around to places you don't want to go, you finally arrive at your destination. Just get a metered taxi and insist they turn on the meter.
You never take TukTuk in Bangkok. They generally charge significantly higher than the taxi and being white does not help just like being Asian in Europe. Notice Thais rarely take Tuktuk? You always do what the locals do in order to get the cheapest price. This includes taking you to massage parlor and silk shops. They are always making commission just like the Las Vegas Taxi driver to take you to places where juices are offered to them. All of them in the world are the same. Use public transportation and you'll be fine. It used to be alot worse when we had to negotiate with the taxi before the meter being installed. We are talking about 30 years ago. I hated Khaosan road since this is where the seediest place in Bangkok with poor tourists. Go to place where wealthier tourist hang out for the best value items. Do the 5 star travel like the Oriental of Bangkok for once in a lifetime experience.

Scammers can be everywhere, wherever you go in the world. But thanks for sharing this experience.
This actually happened to me today I actually did it. He took me to several temples. Additional, to that he took me to two suit maker places and one VERY cheap brand name store that sold Gucci, ysl etc. But all in all it was actually worth the 60baht. The driver didn’t seem to mind and carried on to the next destination.

I've never been harassed by hawkers like that in Bangkok. It must be the mean look on my face. Or the fact that I never look them in the eye or engage. I just keep walking.
Shame the police don't do anything or something about it. It's always been happening and I've been going for over 20 years. It really is disgusting that it's still happening in 2022
Happened to me today, I was outside the grand palace, I pulled out my map then a guy came up to me acting friendly and asked me where I was from etc, he told me the grand palace was closed and then drew a route on my map of where he could take me in his tuk tuk. I was really annoyed he drew all over my only map.
Although being overcharged a dollar here and there is unavoidable when travelling S.E.A - The best thing to do is always avoid people who APPROACH YOU uninvited. "Yes my friend" "Hey you" "where are you going"
Beware of tour scams in every countries..not only Bangkok..seek helps from police personels, fellow tourists friends or Google first.. don't get sweet talks from locals who talk too much. The scammers usually work in groups..
One benefit to having a Thai wife is that scammers tend to leave me alone, unless I’m walking around by myself. Best thing to do is don’t engage with them at all, either ignore them or say “No thanks” and keep walking.
Rule#1 : Say no to Tuk-tuk. Rule#2 : Say no to free gift. Rule#3 : I don't know speak English. These 3 rules save me a lot during the travel. Sorry to those tuk-tuk driver who are sincere and honest, but as a foreigner we just want to have good memories during the travel, not bad memories or even worst was end up in police station to log scammer report or settle the dispute with those "police".
to be fair, you must know the city around b4 your travel, tuk tuk is always and has always been the dark side of thailand especially in prices and its a custom to talk down the price, there are Subway, BTS, and grab which could save you a lot of hassles, but if you guys were kind enough to think in a different angle, when you ask for a tuk tuk service, do prepare to think of donating some money to help out these struggling drivers, if not, please order a grab Have a nice trip
Wife and I just got back from Bangkok. Not sure we'll ever go again. I'm positive the vast majority of people in Thailand are wonderful, but the scammers and hastle you get walking the streets there constantly really turned us off.. never experienced that before anywhere else.
It can definitely be annoying for sure but we found generally if you stay away from khao san road it’s absolutely fine. Hope you give it another try one day, it’s one of our favourite cities 😃
I fell for this scam but didn't lose any money on it. I just involved myself in the friendly talk and realized they were scammers later that night when I thought about everything. They're a disgusting lying heartless people. I don't buy all the dumb bowing crap I see everywhere. They do so to statues so its meaningless. It's a fun country with modern amenities, great food, and tons of value, nothing else.
Please go to Thailand. Just avoid scammers. Google. And use google maps when you get into any uber or any frm of taxi. Take the sky train as much as possible. You will want to keep going back. There is always more to see.
I was so close to get scammed at same location, he offer ride for 100bah* he said it’s cheap because it factory government day!!! I get in the tuk tuk and when we stoped at the first temple another guy approached me and he work there but clearly can see he don’t work at temple, also he start talking about the factory and cheap gold also he told me to ask driver to take me there. Anyway I didn’t feel safe so I went back and payed the tuk tuk driver and told him I don’t want to carry on with my journey and I left. I’m curious how the scam will end??? Anyone had same experience can share it with us please?
As a Victorian Gothic, I was confused. Why every time I go to the beach most people always look at me with a strange look? I always wear long black dresses even to the beach, is that wrong? I don't like just wearing a bikini or a swimsuit. Some people ask me "Why are you wearing a long black dress to the beach?" This question is ridiculous to me. Honestly, I like Thai beaches because they are nice and the food there is a lot of good. Overall I like Thailand, but please don't tell me to wear a bikini or swimsuit when I'm at the beach. Maybe they don't know what Victorian Gothic wear when traveling. Thailand 8.0/10 for me. 🖤
You must take care Skin Cancer your lady is high risk with her shoulder exposed, laser treatment is big time in Pattaya and very expensive. The thais dont understand why westerners take that risk!
They promise you a cheap fair and then take you to a bunch of places such as to get a suit made etc because the get a commission from each place that makes a sale.
Overly friendly Thai people who approach you, are mostly all trying to scam you including the taxi driver at the entrance to Ko San road. Normal Thai people do not approach foreigners on the street. I have been living in Bangkok for years.
Hi guys! Just avoid eye contacts and walk as if you are on a catwalk, don't say hi and don't smile, and I promise no tuk tuk will ever approach you, well at least they won't walk up to you!!!
After Covid they are all very friendly to tourists, because they are happy that tourists come back to Tailand. Even if you reject the (scam) tuk tuk driver, they are still very friendly. That was before Covid little bit different.
Bottom line in Thailand is..... if someone tries really hard to sell you something. Dont buy it. Buy things on your terms and dont trust everyone you meet.
I have been to thailand four times . Every day i make a deal with the hotel taxi driver , a new one every day to be my tour guide for my family and i pay him buy the end ofcthe day. Always end well and never been scammed by any scammers
Scams are common in any touristy countries. Among the very worst are Egypt, India, Italy. Not quite the worst but pretty bad include France (may be only Paris), UK, Turkey, Czechia. Minimal or none include Russia, Jordan, China. No scam at all that I perceived include Germany, Saudi Arabia, Laos, Cambodia. Of course your mileage may vary. Thailand falls somewhere about average or little below in frequency of scammers I think and not difficult to avoid with a bit of travel savvy, with taxi scammers being the most common and irritating.
sO basically, Thailand is full of scummy scammers? I'm here now for work and regretting coming. If honest. Been scammed in various ways already. One was a local old bloke who i began chatting to while i was cleaning my clothes. Anyway, I nodded at him and smiled as he walked past. then he came and sat and talked. He seemed genuine. Anyway, he said he'd show me around. So the next day he did. Took me to his local area near Khao San road. A little river area with food vendors. Only locals. As we walked there. My phone went missing... I NEVER LOSE ANYTHING. EVER. Anyway i panicked and walked back about 1000 metres to try to retrace my phone. Then i walked back to the guy and he was on his phone saying he rang my phone and a guy had it. And guess what...the guy did. Alarm bells rang in my head but i have benefit of doubt. Anyway, I sat and we spoke and he then asked me to buy the guy who found my phone drinks. Oh I also noticed my bank card was the wrong way in my waller and my ID was the wrong way also... Anyway back to point, i bought him 2 coffees and his friends 2 beers and i had a bottle of water. I then asked for the bill and it came in at 550 bhat. That's when it clicked that i was being scammed. I then got up, paid and told him to not contact me again. Then rang him not long after telling him how bad this looks for thai people. Oh and today my card wouldnt work.... he emptied my account. Luckily i drip money from my paypal into it so i only had a few hundred in (ill get recovered from bank). But it only clicked today when i used my card and it got declined. And I was FUMING. I have the guys number so i might set up a sting with the police to get him arrested and charged. Or I might meet him and give him a jab to the throat. I've not decided yet. I will tomorrow when i am less angry. But so far, I am not a fan of Bangkok at all. The people are scum so far.
Negotiate a decent price for a tuk tuk ride once to experience a tuk tuk, then never take one again. They're all rip-offs unless you're with a Thai person who can normally get a good price.
Keep your head on a swivel. The scams are vast and endless. Keep the video going while theyre telling you the scam, it scars them, they’ll usually walk away.
Hey guys! We just arrived in Thailand and we already came across to those tricks, specially as we are staying close to khaosan road. We have been traveling around but those guys are skillful! Nice Vlog. Take care 😅
Thanks for this "newer" scam method . Back in 2008 it was the tuk tuk brings you to the jewlry store scam. I remember seeing a information in an Khaosan road hotel where they warned for the jewelry scam :D
@@adamandyaz Yeah thought so, I won't go to anywhere that makes you wear it outside, I've had enough of the mask by the time I've been on the plane for an hour
We also got scammed the same way and ended up paying for an overexpensive trip... We don't know what to do. The tourism police won't help us. If you have any recommendations, please feel free to comment them.
I fell for this scam but didn't lose any money on it except for the fake 40 baht "entrance" for one of their Buddha stops (That's $1, I don't care). My guy actually took me to Grand Palace and waited because I knew it closed at 3:30pm. He thought I was an "easy lick" which means an easy robbery. But I didn't fall for buying some stupid suit and the Indian guy didn't bother me when I said I'm not interested. I told him I don't even know why I'm in here. What bothers me the most is I involved myself in the friendly English talk that lasted 10+ minutes and realized they were scammers later that night when I thought about everything. They're a disgusting lying heartless people. I don't buy all the dumb bowing crap I see everywhere. They do so to statues so its meaningless. It's a fun country with modern amenities, great food, and tons of value, nothing else.
Best avoid is dnt talk to anyone, even he/she looks like tourist, and ask for help, i lost 300 dollars inside 7 eleven store. And they usually follow people from currency exchange points.
I'm Thai and i commute through that area everything i will try to look out for them and report them to the authorithies(Which is probaly in on the scam too lol)
Just 2 days ago i got scammed in Bankog. It was exactly the same. A Guy talked to me very friendly, got me a cheap tuktuk, drove me to some temples. There was another guy who talked with me about a suitshop and showed me pictures "of his son in a suit". Then they drive you to excatly that suit shop and you get verry friendly welcomed by the sellers with a free beer. They measure up a suit for you and make you pressure to sign the contract. They tell you of course its a really good price. At the end i bought a suit for 300€. Its MANIPULATION Guys please take care they do it verry professional. And it makes no sence to call the police because they are involved in that whole thing. So learn throgh that and take care of you!💪
Duude 😂 I fell for this in Bangkok 😭 I mean tbh it was like 60 baht and brought me to some cool stuff for an hour but then he stopped with what they call their partners or sponsors in order to get a coupon for gas but yeah I ended up in a freaking suit shop or tourist information center I was like wtf and it's kind of a waste of time and they're super annoying, pushy and harassing you almost. Oh and they will tell you the temples are closed until 2pm so they can bring you somewhere else meanwhile, which is obviously not true and this is a scam!
Yes, just ignore these guys. Just walk on by. They go to where the first-time and one-time tourists go. Since the Grand Palace is a must-see, they tend to be most numerous there, and the two ends of Khao San Road are also natural spots for them. Bangkok gives Paris a run for the money when it comes to scammers.
Thai are friendly, but when tuk tuk driver are too friendly makes me scare. 😂🤣 The best to travel around Thailand is by public transport or grab taxi. Avoid tuk tuk.
I speak Spanish when I deal with people coming up to me. Not many locals can speak it and I just repeat that I don’t understand. I have found only one person to speak it so it is a 99.9% success rate and they just walk away.
You're smart, with ungreedy heart bro! 20 yrs ago when I was young, I also got same scam here, with a kind soul helping to get very cheap tuktuk to visit various temples. Finally leading to gem shop. And you know my plight. They're still doing same trick. LOL. That was my 1st and last holiday being scammed.
I was there yesterday ( Saturday 22/5 ) and I didn’t have a single person stop me. I just Politely say no thank you I’m happy to walk and they left me alone. 4 times in 10 min would drive me crazy and just waste my time.
You will end up stopping at many tailor shops and jewellery shops and told just to have a look because they get a kickback just by taking you there plus a commission if you buy something.
Thailand pay most attention to the tourists and they will not accept any scam that may destroy or low their guest from abroad. 191 is a police call number.Have fun!
I was there 2019 and they were relentless.. though their tactics were so familiar like some scammers in Sg, Philippines- number 1 rule in a foreign country, if a local approach you, just keep walking and say no thank you u don’t have to stop.
super cheap! 60 baht to go to all those places! tuk tuk is always overprice even for thai people, Nowadays we normally take electric tuktuk safe and fun and fair price it is call MUVMI.

I've never been harassed by hawkers like that in Bangkok. It must be the mean look on my face. Or the fact that I never look them in the eye or engage. I just keep walking.
That’s a good idea 😅
No, it's because you aren't a Western backpacker, that's the scammers' bread and butter
They get money when the bring you to shops, tbh if you like a tuktuk pay a bit more and they bring you to your destination without all the stops
Yeh we pay normal prices for tuk tuks this was how we noticed it wasn’t going to be a straight forward journey doing it so cheap/free
A "student" came up to us and we told him we were from New York and he said he's studying English where he did the sane things you mentioned 🤦🏿♀️
Why did you let him have your map instead of telling him to FUCK OFF?!
I always told them in thai language that i live here for 2 years already. Now i don’t even have to lie anymore because i moved here
Although being overcharged a dollar here and there is unavoidable when travelling S.E.A - The best thing to do is always avoid people who APPROACH YOU uninvited.
"Yes my friend" "Hey you" "where are you going"
What if i just ignore them even without smiling? Will they call cops or something? I just can't fake smile - I'm a finnish guy.
Beware of tour scams in every countries..not only Bangkok..seek helps from police personels, fellow tourists friends or Google first.. don't get sweet talks from locals who talk too much. The scammers usually work in groups..
Do scammers get arrested and put in jail?Does polices really do good jobs catching scammer?
One benefit to having a Thai wife is that scammers tend to leave me alone, unless I’m walking around by myself. Best thing to do is don’t engage with them at all, either ignore them or say “No thanks” and keep walking.
In this age of smartphone and Uber, there is no scope for these scammers
Absolutely right!
It's a fun country with modern amenities, great food, and tons of value, nothing else.
lol just say go away i go there every year no problems
Please go to Thailand. Just avoid scammers. Google. And use google maps when you get into any uber or any frm of taxi. Take the sky train as much as possible. You will want to keep going back. There is always more to see.
I dont see the scamm ,only a tuk tuk tour for 60baht ,so whats the problem??? Enlighten me please!!!
Do you know if it's possible to buy kratom in bangkok
I'm not sure to be honest, it's not something we look for so it's entirely possible
Wear what makes you most comfortable and happy :)
@@adamandyaz Oh yes and thanks for replying, have a nice day.
You must take care Skin Cancer your lady is high risk with her shoulder exposed, laser treatment is big time in Pattaya and very expensive. The thais dont understand why westerners take that risk!
Dear lady go to whitby gothic centre of the world
You never mentioned what the scam was. So the Tuk Tuks we’re offering a cheap price, what’s the scam ??
Dude just so angry to see them trying to scam you…but you’re cool and handle it well! Take care mate!
They promise you a cheap fair and then take you to a bunch of places such as to get a suit made etc because the get a commission from each place that makes a sale.
May i ask which carrier is the best coverage for 5G in Bangkok?
AIS or True
Overly friendly Thai people who approach you, are mostly all trying to scam you including the taxi driver at the entrance to Ko San road. Normal Thai people do not approach foreigners on the street. I have been living in Bangkok for years.
Where was the scam? Am I missing something, they were trying to sell you a ride around the block for a couple dollars.. Hardly a scam?
They make my blood boil around there... I will call them out every time. They give other Tuktuk drivers a bad name
It's not just tourists being deceived by these people. Thai people are also deceived. If possible, walk away without talking to him.
China has several dealing with tea shops, bars, and restaurants. Many on RUclips.
sO basically, Thailand is full of scummy scammers?
So, any update on this? :D
Nice Vlog. Take care 😅
Thank you so much 🙏🏼 they are skillful and relentless! Enjoy the rest of your trip 😃
Thanks for this "newer" scam method .
Back in 2008 it was the tuk tuk brings you to the jewlry store scam. I remember seeing a information in an Khaosan road hotel where they warned for the jewelry scam :D
Now it's just spend 10 min in a Tailor store lol
@@deanhunter1753 It was the tailor shop back in 1999!
AND the jewellery shop!
What is it like wearing a mask in the boiling sun in Thailand??
Very unpleasant! 🙃
@@adamandyaz Yeah thought so, I won't go to anywhere that makes you wear it outside, I've had enough of the mask by the time I've been on the plane for an hour
Listening to Adam losing his patience throughout the video cracked me up so much 😂😂😂
Koh San is defiantly better at night from memory
Haha thanks Matt. It was getting hard towards the end 🤣. Definitely, completely the opposite at night.
Koh San ? khao san road. the street where rice was traded
We also got scammed the same way and ended up paying for an overexpensive trip... We don't know what to do. The tourism police won't help us. If you have any recommendations, please feel free to comment them.
Thailand is full of scammers. I’ve been there 5 times and have seen scams every time
How much do they ask you for at the end?
We don't know because thankfully we didn't take any of them but it would have been a lot lot more than just 60 baht
@@adamandyaz they won't even go across the road for 60B
That's something i don't miss ,Being accosted as you walk down the street or out of your hotel, But i really miss Thailand ,Enjoy
Legitimate Thai people don’t “approach” you… “a fool and his money are soon parted”.
You don't stop , keep moving .
So learn throgh that and take care of you!💪
Oh no Karl! We are so sorry to read this! :( it’s not fair this shouldn’t be happening.
I can tell they are fake police. But real police also dangerous too.
Im gonna try a social experiment so I will try to act like on of these scammers and see how much tourist fall for this.
It’s so bad isn’t it! Sorry that happened to you!
@@adamandyaz yes next time I'll know, great video to educate people though!
@@yonatan.b thank you!
Kho san Rd was really a place to see twenty years ago, It looks so empty of tourists, I guess post covid doesn’t help
Don't be fooled by these talkative scammers, just walk away.... just walk away.
Thai are friendly, but when tuk tuk driver are too friendly makes me scare. 😂🤣 The best to travel around Thailand is by public transport or grab taxi. Avoid tuk tuk.
They seemed SO friendly! Makes it hard not to talk to them haha
I speak Spanish when I deal with people coming up to me. Not many locals can speak it and I just repeat that I don’t understand. I have found only one person to speak it so it is a 99.9% success rate and they just walk away.
Oh I don't pay attention to stuff like that i learned my first trip when they tried to tell us the major temple was closed, but it was a lie
You shall inform tourist police in that area, or send this Video to the police for stop this people.
In civilization this guy would be charged for impersonating a government official
Absolutely!
Tuk tuk scam always work near tourist area like grand palace , wat pho
You will end up stopping at many tailor shops and jewellery shops and told just to have a look because they get a kickback just by taking you there plus a commission if you buy something.
Thailand pay most attention to the tourists and they will not accept any scam that may destroy or low their guest from abroad. 191 is a police call number.Have fun!
Never happens to me because I don't answer them.
Don't converse at all and it's very easy.
I was there 2019 and they were relentless.. though their tactics were so familiar like some scammers in Sg, Philippines- number 1 rule in a foreign country, if a local approach you, just keep walking and say no thank you u don’t have to stop.
scammers in SG? where? locals here are too busy trying to survive to spend time approaching you. 😅
Don't make eye contact and just wave them off and keep walking.
There is no scam. They are saying that it's 60 baht which is the actual price. Real scams start from 200-300 baht 😂
Not another Thai “scam” video !!
Thousands on Yt already !
Nice to see youtubers that refuse to pay the scammers.
Easy tips- just say NO, thank you. There is no need to start a conversation. Their tactic will starts once you making a friendly conversation.
super cheap! 60 baht to go to all those places! tuk tuk is always overprice even for thai people, Nowadays we normally take electric tuktuk safe and fun and fair price it is call MUVMI.
Adam and yaz whenever you met this people, get information and report to Thai tourism authority in BKK.
