The Count of Monte Cristo is EVERYTHING. I saw it randomly on one of those off-brand movie channels in the middle of the night back in the early 2000s and i've been hooked ever since!
I've seen mutiple versions of this story including one with Richard Chamberlain. I haven't seen this one so I am off to see it first and then coming back to this recap. I really liked their Face Off recap . My favorite recaps of theirs are when they watch heavy dramas centered on women like Precious or Color Purple because it is nice to know that White Canadian men who as far as I know are straight can be emotionally touched by that kind of story. They seem to have a lot of empathy.

I always loved the book, but I actually loved this movie more. The book, however, has one of the greatest quotes ever that sums up his revenge:
“And now...farewell to kindness, humanity and gratitude. I have substituted myself for Providence in rewarding the good; may the God of vengeance now yield me His place to punish the wicked.”
"I, who have also been betrayed, assassinated and cast into a tomb, I have emerged from that tomb by the grace of God and I owe it to God to take my revenge. He has sent me for that purpose. Here I am."
The rare time I enjoyed the movie more! Why isn’t this everywhere?!?
I was disappointed in this because the book is so much better. More revenge plots and more cleverly executed. The book is genius and the movie is good at highlighting some of the best parts of the book but it misses a lot of them as well. Not sure how anyone could like the movie more.
I saw the movie in high school, and because I was obsessed with it I decided to rent the UNABRIDGED book from the school library.
Then I let it sit…and sit…and sit…until a year later when I realized it was 9 months late, paid a $2 fee and re-rented it. After I finally committed to it, every last one of those 1800 freaking pages just wouldn’t stop turning. SOOOOO good!
Ever read the Greek legend of King Midas, where everything he touched turned to gold? Jay wolpert has the shit touch where everything he touches turns to shit. And that's what he did with the story in the book.

Such an underrated film. Action, suspense, mystery, drama, action, romance. The only thing it's missing is a gosh darn spaceship!! 😂😂 Seriously though, it is one of my favorite movies of all time as well.

The Count of Monte Cristo is an amazing story written by an amazing Author, Alexander Dumas, fortunately they haven't over done this story like they did with The Three Musketeers. Man in the Iron mask is another one of his stories.
No, in fact, it's incredibly under done, to the point that it's not even the same story. It's a very good movie. It made money and people like it. But it's not the Dumas story, not even close. The original texts are far to complex to fit into a 90 minute film.

The scene in the carriage where Mercedes had just been brought back to the Mondego mansion and Edmond was threatening Jacopo for interfering, there comes a line from Jacopo where he says “Take what you have won!”. Edmond replies “I cannot!” And Jacopo asks him “Why not!?”
Edmond was then supposed to give some excuse or other, but the actor legitimately forgot the line and sat there speechless. Instead of trying again for a new take, Jacopo’s actor continues with his own next line of dialogue and the director liked the change so much they kept it in the final cut.
I usually don't comment but damn yall are goated for this reaction. The count of Monte Cristo has a soft place in my heart.
Fans of "The Shawshank Redemption" will note that this book and general plot line is cleverly mentioned in that movie.
I had to read this book as a sophomore in high school. I rolled my eyes, thinking what drudgery it would be. Instead, I reacted just like you did to this movie. By page 50 of the book, I was hooked and could not put it down. Truly a page turner. The moments with Abbe Faria are even more rewarding in the book, and the sting of revenge even sweeter. There have been a number of film adaptations over the years, graphic novels too. Even musical theater. But this is a notoriously difficult book to adapt - so many plot lines, so many competing motivations. Thankfully this particular film does better than most. Still, the book is really worth reading and, as an added incentive, the ending of the book is even better. It's more true to Edmond Dantes. Let's just say that this movie has a cinematic ending, while the book chooses to stick with literary merits. Check it out.
This ending was more Hollywood than the 1943 adaptation that we have Count and Haydee.

The 2002 version is for domestic audiences who expect lovers to be together after two years apart. Love Wins everything. the director made this film with the American audience in mind.
In the 1943 adaptation the count is a bitter man who has not found happiness in revenge and has doubts if he did the right thing. He seeks tranquility with haydee.
The 2002 film has a dream ending, it loses everything, but it has recovered and has a life that could be considered a dream.
There has even been an anime. Really highly rated too from around 10 years ago.
It is referenced in the movie "Sleepers" masterfully as well.
The great thing is that Dumas partially based this story on the life of his own father, Tomas-Alexandre Dumas. The Biographics YT channel has a great video on him.

@@nightfall902 I originally read it in the early seventies, the book was hardcover and published during the late fifties or early sixties. It was a complete translation of the serialized version originally written by Alexandre Dumas.
Make sure you read one that is complete, not one that follows any of the movie versions.
Think of the loyalty of Jakapo... He is taken to this INSANE treasure and doesn't just kill Dontes and take it for himself
It's amazing the loyalty you gain from giving a man second chance to live and not only that but through the entire film Jakapo always had Dantes best interest in mind; he was truly an amazing companion!
In the book...Edmond after his escape swims toward a ship in hopes of rescue but his strength gives out. It's Jacopo that pulls him from the water and gives him a shirt and pants. That forms the initial bond. Later on the Isle of Monte Cristo, Edmond fakes being injured and Jacopo offers to give up his share of the pirate treasure to stay with his friend. From that moment Edmond knew that he could be trusted. Jacopo is later rewarded with his own ship and crew among other things. In the book he is a rather minor character.
Great reaction guys as always! This is a criminally underrated revenge movie. With Mercedes marrying Mondego quickly too, it was the best option for her at that point in time as society would have treated her as an outcast for being an unmarried woman with a child (she was able to get around this by claiming Albert was a 'premature' baby and Mondego himself even says this after the reveal that he is not Albert's biological father). 😉
I think you two would enjoy 1993's _The Three Musketeers_ and 1998's _The Man in the Iron Mask_ (they both have a fantastic cast).
The film has many ridiculous changes to the book's story.
Albert is Fernand's son in the book, Edmond met another woman and married her. A child and a confession of love is no guarantee of a lasting relationship.
The film Admiral (2008) tells the true history of Admiral Kochak and his young lover Anna Timiryova. Kochak was married and had a son, but he still left his family for his young lover.
Should I ask the screenwriter why he thought it was a good idea for Albert to be Edmond's son?
Jim Caviezel starred in the (great) tv series Person of Interest as an adventurer with a mysterious past. As in in-joke he can be spotted several times reading the original Monte Christo novel. In the first series the actress who played Mercedes guest starred as a woman who was married to the wrong man.
Other genuine classics to check out would include the 1934 version of The Scarlet Pimpernel and almost any version of The Prisoner of Zenda.

Based on a novel written by a French author in 1844 (he also wrote a little novel called The Three Musketeers) there have been many movie remakes of this story going back to about the 1930's and for good reason. It's the best revenge story of all time and it's definitely one of my favorite movies of all time. It's so well done and the cast gives some great performances. I really like the priest who is played by none other than Richard Harris who you would recognize as the original Dumbledore in Harry Potter. RIP legend. Thanks for doing this classic, you guys rool.

I read the book as a kid and watched the 1975 version of the movie starring Richard Chamberlain. As soon as I heard there was going to be new version I knew I was going to watch it.
This movie ROCKS! It is so well done and the cast was absolutely perfect. If there ever a movie that deserved a 10 out of 10, this is it.

Dad loved the books of Alexandre Dumas, I got to read every one of them growing up, and "The Count of Monte Cristo" was a fast favorite. When this movie premiered in theaters, we were both there grabbing the best seats in the house. And applauding like no one else around us! Yeah yeah, differences between prose and screenplay, sure. Those are inevitable. You both just put it so succinctly here. The core themes and the characters are what make this entire story, and the movie got them down beautifully. Not a moment of runtime wasted, taps right into the emotions that it needs to, and is just so satisfying. This really is one of those flicks that you cue up right away when somebody says they want to see a good movie.
This version is just an adventure movie. The Northman is a true revenge story.
They didn't romanticize, they sanitized story, showing what hate and desire for revenge are.
This film tried not to offend the sensibility of the modern viewer.
Oh no totally. The movie is a swashbuckler. The book delved into the much darker aspects of seeking vengeance, and its cost. Yet, for being sanitized it's still just such a good time.
It's interesting, I just came from seeing "The Northman" tonight. Definitely a solid movie, expertly crafted. You're right though, the way that it depicts revenge cuts far deeper and hews closer to reality. There is never a bright, hopeful outcome to it.
@@hella6513 While I totally agree with you..to be fair, Northman was written as a screenplay, intended to be a movie. The Count of Monte Cristo was of course, a 1000 page novel written before there were movies. There is no way a novel can be 100% adapted to film. This is why the book is always better.

FUN FACT: The reason the camera in the final fight is constantly spinning is because they were trying to hide the fact that half the field was being knocked over by Caviezel & Pierce, and the plants weren't popping right back up like they were supposed to. If you look into the special features available, the Director explained this and shows an aerial shot from above. The field looked like a bloody crop circle by the time they finished shooting.
Suggested: Man In The Iron Mask. Not quite as good, but it deals with more Dumas characters, and it has a great cast. Really loved your reaction to this!!!!

I have to say I do really like this movie. One of my moms favorites. Guy Pearce is my favorite actor. Even when he plays the bad guy, which seems to be quite a bit.

I love this movie, especially the fight at the end, but the book is even better. He does such a masterful job making sure each of the conspirators bears the consequences of their own actions.

Could not agree more. No slight on the movie, but the book is a masterpiece. If you do read the book don't try to insert the movie into the book. The movie inserted some Hollywood story lines that are not in the book and ends with a different resolution.
@Anna I was rather amazed...I like Northman yet is failed miserably at the box office, managing only a 58% return. Considering it was a screenplay intended to be a movie, I was rather surprised. Movies are a product. There are only 2 considerations, How much will it cost to make and How much profit will it make.

I forgot about this movie. At one point it used to be my favorite movie of all time. How do you improve anything?! The entrance on the hot air balloon in that robe, the empty gun, how he reveals himself just as they all go down,....just all of it was perfect.

My grandmother introduced me to this gem of a book and then she and I watched the movie together. I immediately fell in love with it, so glad to see this on here! You never disappoint
you're right about Jim caviezel fights and carries himself as Batman especially with the cape and everything. See him in Person of Interest, so much Batman-like moves and bruce wayne suave.
I honestly felt Jim should have been cast as Batman till he passes away. He is just so good.

The film softened the story of the book.
When reading Medea (Euripedes and Metamorphoses by Ovid), we have a story of a vengeful woman who killed her ex-lover's new bride and the children she had with him.
But here we have a family saga with a happy ending.

I have always loved this story. The book by Alexandre Dumas was amazing. It's been made into film maybe fifteen or twenty times. This one is my second favorite version. For nostalgic reasons, my first favorite isnthe 1934 version starring Robert Donat, which you will remember because it was the movie V and Evie watch in V for Vendetta.
The original story was in 18 parts over 2 years. There have been several versions made into books. The only unabridged version was by Robin Buss , translated from scratch and released in 1996. There have been well more than 40 film versions. Dumas was paid by the word so the unabridged volume is over 1000 pages.
This movie is my absolute favorite. While it's still not as solid as the book, it captures the heart and intent of it very well. The original story is such a masterpiece.
YES. The unabridged version is just FLAWLESS. But I can’t get mad at this movie . It really does the job of bringing justifiable revenge to life.
@@LaMonicaWilliams The movie is good and provides the necessary Hollywood happy ending. Books and movies, two different things and cannot be compared. 900 pages into 2 hours...impossible. As I'm sure you know from the book, it is so much more than simple revenge and there really is no happy ending for anyone...especially poor Mercedes.

@@nightfall902 That always hit me hard. The fact she literally has nothing in the end except the possibility of Albert 'rising above' his current station. While I appreciate the nod to how Dantes became more than how he started, it's still a rather depressing ending.
I do enjoy the movie version more from an entertainment perspective, but the novel is not only a fantastic example of extracting revenge, but also how futile and petty that exercise is.
@@RicoRaynn I may have said this elsewhere, but books and movies are two totally different media. It is a good movie, but has almost nothing in common with the novel apart from the same title and some of the same character names. The novel gives you a sense of time and history. The details of the revenge plot are so complex and extreme, you know that his mind has dwelt on little else for years and years. His manor reflects the confidence of knowing every single aspect of his plan and it's perfection. The book has a true to life ending and the film, of course, the Hollywood happy one. I probably prefer the novel only because it was my first exposure and I think reading has a greater impact on one's brain, forcing the imagination to paint the picture.

This has been one of my favorite movies since the first time I saw it! It's absolutely fantastic! Also, as a kid that was picked on for being heavy, the idea of disappearing for a long time and then returning unrecognizable and uber to boot was really appealing to me. Such a great story! Also, Jim Caviezel is the man!

I love this story. I read the book as a teenager, in French. As a 19th century novel, it is 700 or 800 pages long. In 29th century, reading was one of the most important forms of relaxation so the books were really long. It was written by one of the greatest authors of the century. Some things were changed for the movie… the ending is quite different but this version is great, too. I love the part with the “prison Yoda”, great line! Richard Harris had a fantastic career. Check out some of his films. I was really happy that you guys selected this film! Great job.

My brother and I were OBSESSED with this movie growing up. So many quotable moments, but I think one of my favorites is “But have you named them yet?”
Fuck yeah. One of my favorite movies to recommend to people, it's way under the radar for most people but it's such a great revenge tale, and this cast/director nailed it.

I just watched this again the other day. One of my favorite movies ever! The toast speech is one I go back to from time to time. Such a great, fun, and intriguing revenge story.
I was so happy to see you enjoying this movie; it's one of the classic books by Alexandre Dumas, along with The Three Musketeers. If you can a hold of a beautiful hardback copy of the book, I'm sure it would be a treasure. I wish these swashbuckling stories from another time were read by everybody from a young adult age.
I feel sure that when Mel Gibson saw this movie, he realised that this was the perfect actor as Jesus in The Passion of the Christ (2004).
Technically it wasn't originally a book. It was written in 18 segments over 2 years. There wasn't a fully unabridged version till Robin Buss did a translation from scratch in 1996. Dumas was paid by the word so the unabridged version is rather lengthy at just under 900 pages.

I saw this in the theater with my mom for her birthday when it came out. At first I didn't care but as the movie went on I'm like "O hell yea!" Another film I recommend similar to this is "The Mask of Zorro" with Antonio Banderas & Anthony Hopkins. Another badass movie that came out.
Period piece that is also really good, and is prescient as ever to today is the movie “Dangerous Liaisons”. The last scene alone will have you reacting similarly. Jaw dropping. And great react.
The fact that you guys didn't realize that Albert was Edmund's son because you were more focused on the overall revenge plot speaks to the message of the story, and means that you got into the same mindset as Edmund. He was so blinded by his quest for revenge that he didn't realize the gifts that life had given to him - his freedom, wealth, the fact that his fiance still loved him, and that they had a child together. If Dumas had decided to write this as a tragedy, he could have easily had Edmund kill his own son to get to Fernand, with Mercedes either hating Edmund as a result and/or dying via suicide or Fernand's bullet managing to find its target during their battle.
If you guys enjoy this sort of period-piece adventure/intrigue film, I'd recommend the '93 Three Musketeers - another classic adaptation of a popular Dumas book.
According to Dumas, Edmond and Fernand barely knew each other. Fernand was Mercedes cousin. Albert was in fact Fernand's son and Edmond and Mercedes never get back together. In many ways the novel is indeed a tragedy.
I love your quote, "You can't let this guy have something when you have everything." It mirrors Fernand's, "Now I couldn't live in a world where you have everything and I have nothing." Almost perfectly.
I have watched this multiple times... and just remembered it again now and Oh my god.. there are so many good actors in this movie.
Love this movie! Growing up in was introduced to this in school. I was 13 when the version with Richard Chamberlin came out. He also did The man in the iron mask about the same time. It is another book by Alexandre Dumas. His stories are intense, edge of your seat thrillers. Not who done it's, but how are they gonna get its. Caviezel is brilliant in this as in his other roles. Glad you guys enjoyed it as much as I did.
FYI, Henry Cavill was 17 when made the film and was still growing. He's now taller than Jim Caveziel

Saw this in theaters back in college, fell in absolute love with it. Sadly found out about how many changes were made from the original book afterwards; became disappointed, but i got over it. Not a bad movie overall.
There have been like a hundred adaptations of this Goddamn story, almost none of them have been completely accurate to the original book. The closest have been a cheap Made-For-TV movie starring Richard Chamberlain, maybe the French TV series (haven't seen it yet), and a Japanese cartoon set in fucking space, and that was arguably the best one.
In fact, if you have time, I'd check out Gankutsou; about 24 episodes, doesn't matter which language really.
It is impossible to make a 2 hour movie from a 900 page novel. There have been over 40 film adaptations and there are even several variations of the novel. The original reflects real life and so there is no fairy-tale ending. It's a tragedy for most of the main characters. Especially Mercedes. She looses Edmond, marries her cousin (Mondego), has his son, Edmond returns and rejects her, her son goes off to war and her husband shoots himself so she lives out the rest of her life alone in the old Dantes apartments.
Movies are made to make money so they need to appeal to as many people as possible while offending as few as possible. Most of the adaptations are well done and a good watch. Simply, they are two totally different media and cannot be compared. My only single issue is not changing the title. Regardless of how good this film is, it is not The Count of Monte Cristo. People watch these adaptations and just assume that they know the story. There is a good audio book on LibriVox for those who would rather listen than actually read :)
I just dislike movies that change the theme of the original story so drastically. The original book is about how revenge is ultimately not worth the price on your soul; and revenge does not account for the lives of the innocent victims, in Mercedes case. And I've seen a lot of stories where the theme is drastically changed to Revenge is Fucking Awesome! Not exactly what the author was going for.
Still a great movie though; it will always hold a place in my heart for getting me into the book.
Also an aside, kinda funny to see Jesus Christ seeking revenge and befriending Superman.
@@primepm8861 You are exactly right. The movie and the original Dumas texts are completely different stories that happen to share the same title. One is a great movie the other a great book.
The 1964 miniseries made by BBC and with Alan Badel, the 1966 Italian miniseries made by Rai and with Andrea Giordana, the 1979 French miniseries with jacques weer are extremely faithful adaptations of the book.

The estate that the Count bought for cash is a well-known tourist attraction in Ireland. The mansion was built in the 18th century on the site of a 13th century castle, was gutted by fire in the 1970s and completely renovated in the 1990s, to look as it did here.

This was on a summer reading list when I was young but before that I had seen the movie ( not this remake) so I read the book and it was awesome too, many many many years later when this version came out I didn't hold much hope but this was done beautifully. Awesome pick and reaction guys.

This is one of the few movies that cuts a ton out of the books while still staying true to the source material and giving you enough to get the full weight of the build up and pay off. MASTERFULLY DONE. If you read the book, there is more to his revenge and much more to who he helps also....but you couldnt have included all of that and had ONE movie from the source material. Vengeance is MINE sayeth The Lord. Im not The Lord...just a humble Count.
Using the synopsis is not the essence of the book. The movie count is closer to zorro and the book count is closer to Raskonilkov of Crime and Punishment.

I believe that the resumption of Edmond's relationship with Mercedes would be simply impossible. You cannot step into the same river twice. Still, the past is the past.
Edmond Dantès has conquered his trials and has evolved, his new identity standing as a proof. The initial couple cannot be reunited without breaking the laws of logic: the Count would have to regress to his original state as Edmond Dantès, and therefore erase all his inner transformations. But with Haydée, he continues his evolution as a character: he rediscovers his old self (Edmond Dantès) and integrates it into his present self (Monte Cristo), thus becoming Edmond Dantès, Count of Monte Cristo.

You make great points about Edmund and Mercedes not being the same people they were, but they ARE the same people. There are many things that go into a person and what makes them attractive. It wasnt all changed. The books do a better job of getting into detail about who he helps as well as who he exacts revenge upon. He pays a lot of people back...for good and bad. The movie doesnt miss out totally by not having the Valentine subplot/character, but it's noticeable as well. For a full-length hollywood movie, it captures the essence very well. A CoMC miniseries that features all of the characters and all of the symbolism would be huge in scope and would likely be doomed to fail by the time it was cast, but I'd pay to see it.

I saw this movie in the theater and it's been one of my all-time favorites since then. Easily one of the most underrated movies of all time. Absolutely phenomenal. Classic story, amazing, amazing film.

Alexandre Dumas was a great writer, he wrote masterpieces: the three musqueters, the count of monte christo, the queen Margot, the viscount of Bragelone , the man in the iron mask… a very famous french writer, his books were published as serials in newspapers, at that time it could be considered the equivalent to the current TV series
This is such a good movie. Great actors, great camera work, great story. And I like that this has a bit of a happy end unlike the book.
Jay Wolpert and his reversed Midas touch. Everything he touches turns to rubbish. That's why the film did poorly at the international box office.
The life of writer Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. has a history that is close to the history of the book. He was reported for the content of a letter and was arrested, his first love has a relationship with another man and when he was released, he marries a girl like Haydee instead of staying with his first love like in the book.
The end of the book is more realistic.

What I really love about this movie is how deserved Edmont's skills are..... nowadays every movie is about the propheciesed prodigy or the main character is from a great bloodline or whatever and though they sort of work for their accomplishments it always feels kinda underwhelming.... Edmond is really just a nice and kind dude with some brain and he goes through tough times and earns every skill he gains with sweat and blood and I love it.... also his character is so well balanced....he went through hell and of course it changed him a bit for worse but in his core he's still a decent person and I love how eventually he finds himself again....just overall great character and story
Nice comment and so true. It wasn't some lab experiment gone wrong, or a special piece of equipment or even exceptional genetics. He goes from the highest high of becoming a captain sooner than expected and being able to marry his love. To being arrested just before the wedding, stripped of everything and thrown into prison for 18 years. Plotting his revenge and his hate was all he had. Finding the treasure was the actual turning point where he lost all humanity and lived for revenge. At the end, he had planned to end his life. Vengeance had given him nothing. When Haydee confesses her love for him, he takes it as a sign and a gift from God and a chance for happiness.
I totally agree with you, so many modern stories have this like insanely strong or prodigy like protagonist and I'm so tired of it; it's not interesting in the slightest. Edmont's growth as a character not only feels more real, but it's easy to relate and understand him as a person. Someone who overcomes the weakness in his kindness and learns that you can't trust everyone, seeing him develop his intelligence and fighting skills as well helps as well. 10/10 protagonist and story telling, easily one of my favorite revenge stories!
@@OctoKrool I have a slightly different view. I don't see it as Edmond's growth. Exactly the opposite in fact. He goes from having everything, virtually a perfect life to having nothing at all. No home. no family, no freedom and no future wife....just nothing. It's a decent not a growth. For 18 years he has one thing, planning revenge. It's all that keeps him alive. Finding the treasure makes it even worse, now he has the means to act on his obsession. In the book, when it comes to the end, Edmond realizes that he has gained nothing at all. The majority of his life has been wasted..he even considers suicide. The actual point of the book is how useless revenge really was. The book really is worth reading, it is a true masterpiece of literature.

Omg! I absolutely LOVE this movie, and I'm happy as hell, that you guys are reacting to it! I first saw this film my junior year of high school in 2013 on The Movie Channel, or STARZ Classic when my family had cable before we all started streaming stuff. This movie is LIFE!
I saw this in the theaters because I enjoyed the book in a class, and it was so well done! Great cast, and even with such a serious story, they still manage to get some humor in there.
I love the scene where they buy the mansion - the owner just gets on the wagon and jets -- no notifying the family or nothing - hes just out...
