I felt the exact same way about restyling dolls as a kid! I’m grateful to my younger self for preserving their original hairstyles and clothes lol

You mentioned painting details, that's something i've wanted to do but that's an instance where I feel like I may actually ruin a doll.
I will acknowledge that Mattel has some amazing detailed molds for their pieces that are in dire need of paint. Like the bag here looks so cool. This has given me more courage.
Daphne is so cute in that outfit. It fits so well! Her base doll is one of my all time RH favs but the Versace style outfits she came with weren't my taste.

You can take the paint off if you don't like it. Ive seen people repaint lips on Rainbow High dolls and then take it off if they want to go back to the original colour underneath. As long as you don't seal it

It really can be scary to start! As someone else said though, especially with accessories that are molded all in one plastic color, it's very easy to restart so there's less risk there 😊

Great topic! It's fascinating for me to observe how others approach doll collecting, and I have no judgement around what they chose to do. For me personally, it's nothing more than a hobby that I want to enjoy. I've been collecting for quite a while and I realized a long time ago that I had to let go of any rigid rules or I wouldn't enjoy it. I collect what I like and I do what I want with them, without any concern for future resale value. I unbox almost all of my new dolls so that I can play with them; otherwise, from my perspective, I might as well just collect pictures of them. I witnessed the meteoric rise and fall of Barbie collecting in the 90's; many people thought they were going to put their kids through college by hoarding NRFB Holiday and other Barbies for resale later. (Not to mention Beanie Babies!) That didn't work out so great for most of them! For me, dolls are purely for fun and escape and I knew I needed to approach collecting with financial responsibly, and that financial security would have to come from my job and actual financial investments. Finding great doll deals has always been the cornerstone of my collecting anyway. But, as you appropriately stated in your video, collecting is personal and everyone should enjoy it in whatever way that makes them happy!

I used to always unbox dolls but now I like having some dolls in box and some out.
I keep dolls in box if the packaging is cute and don't want to restyle them.
With my out of box dolls I like restyling them so they aren't exactly the same as the ones thousands of other people own. Ive bought heaps of doll clothes on ali express.
I want to start repainting doll faces on Bratz. I'm going to start with just lips. I want to do rerooting as well. I just need to buy all the tools.
I used to hate having dolls with different body types because the clothes fit differently. I was annoyed when Barbie changed the classic body.
But now I love having dolls with a variety of bodies. I collect dolls from a variety of brands anyway and its actually fun to see how the clothes look on different dolls. Like Bratz clothes on Rainbow High dolls.
I like trying heads on different bodies now too. I really want some Ever After High bodies to experiment with.

Ive actually done the complete opposite as you as a collector! As a kid I would constantly restyle outfits and give doll haircuts and take out original hairstyles to make my own but now as an adult I almost always preserve the doll as I bought them both new and used. I now mostly reserve restyles to dolls that have been styled so many times over the years that I couldn’t tell you what their original look was in the first place😂

I started collecting Bratz in 2001, my very first doll I collected. I used to be inbox collector. Then I started not having any spaces to store on my displays…so I stopped around 2006-2007. Then I started to downsized my collection in 2012 which is my total regrets. Fast forward to early 2021, I start to noticed LOL OMG doll boxes. I had no idea what it looks like so I found one was on clearance. So I decided to buy it…out of curiosity what the doll looked like. When I first opened it, I just flipped over it. So I did more research on it and later discovered the RUclips about other doll collectors on how they displayed their dolls. So I decided to unboxed rest of my Bratz dolls and to catch up all LOL OMG dolls. I started to noticed RH dolls…their clothings was so outstanding and very detailed. I never unboxed my dolls…but I do now-enjoying the beauty to touch their clothings, their hair, so fourth. I feel same as you to keep all my dolls to be displayed with their original clothings. Then I later find more RH dolls in thrift stores that I enjoyed to customize them…changed their clothings and their hairdos. I find it so enjoyable to rescue these dolls to customize it.😍😍

I’m glad you have finally found what works for you and it seems you’ve matured in your collection 👍👏 I’m still pretty new but I love fashion so I love to try different outfits on my dolls I’m terrible with hair so I usually leave it but I’m starting to have some brave thoughts 🤔about finally tackling ☝️that issue 🤣👏

I used to rarely or never restyle my dolls. Now, it comes to restyling dolls, I do restyle the hair and clothes on a few of my SH and RH dolls. My Emi Vanda doll, for example, is literally my favorite doll to restyle in my collection because she just looks so good in everything. I also use my second out of box Storm Twins to style and do the hair on, because I like to keep my original, Main N and V dolls in their original outfits and with their original hairstyles. I also found out that through restyling their out of box "Doppelgangers" a bit more that N and V look AMAZING with high ponytails and in literally every piece of clothing that I put them in, even if it is more out of character for them sometimes, and they are just so much fun to style! I also restyle an SH or RH doll if I don't like their original outfit as well.
As for customizing, years ago, I would have never thought to heavily customize or modify any doll items, but I do plan on customizing one of the Color and Create RH dolls into one of my comfort characters, Weiss Schnee from RWBY, because she looks so much like her! Also, somehow, despite not having the most customizing experience, I was able to customize a Barbie SUV into the Storm Twins' Jeep from the Rainbow High show in a period of only 2 weeks and gift it to my Main N and V dolls, that are also my personal comfort dolls, on their unofficial birthday (the anniversary of the day that I first got them), June 9th. Knowing that I was able to make a custom, super detailed, OOAK doll car gives me enough confidence to actually try to customize and style an actual RH doll into one of my comfort characters somehow, even!🖤💜

I’m a lot older than you, and you’ve just given me good food for thought! 😅 I keep all the extra clothes that there’s 95% chance I’m never going to use… and it’s just taking up space. Why am I doing that?!
Also I have some dolls I hesitate removing from box on the idea IF I have to sell it down the line, it will be worth more 😕

Sometimes keeping the clothes is totally worth it! I'm just very opinionated, so I know when I won't use them 😂 But yeah, it can be a struggle balancing doing things that might benefit future you and enjoying yourself in the moment

i used to think like that as well! (wanting things to be exactly how they were) as a girl who’s struggled with adhd as a child to now, i tend to have obsessive tendencies. through therapy and life experiences i’ve worked through a lot of this.

I am the opposite-I changed hairstyles and clothes all the time as a kid but as an adult collector I preserve their hairstyles (I honestly don’t think I’ve brushed any of my dolls’ hair except for my American Girl dolls!) and usually keep them in their original clothes. I think it’s because I lose several of my Barbie doll clothes and don’t want to go through that again 😅

I am a newish collector. I have only been collecting for about a year. It started with SH and within the last month I was gifted a G1 MH Goul Sports Clawdeen that thrusted me into a huge obsession with wanting to watch all of the movies, webisodes, the Nick show, and collecting all the G3 dolls. I do not restyle any of my dolls yet, since I am still new to collecting, but when my daughter decides she doesn't want her EAH or her RH dolls occasionally, I clean them up and restyle those since they have been heavily played with.

Completely relate to your journey, I now enjoy styling my dolls and am not afraid of change. I do have one question, what do you do with dolls that you have emotional attachment because they bring up fond memories but you don't actually like the doll itself?

    • @FaeryTaleDolls
      @FaeryTaleDolls  Год назад +1

I'm very lucky to have very few dolls that fit that description because I've always been very picky 😂 The few I can think of though, I just restyle them to be more my taste. For example a Barbie Extra my husband got me, I fell out of love with her outfit but wanted to keep the doll. So now I slightly redid her hair and gave her a swimsuit and she lives in my pool display ☺

I’ve been collecting since 2016 with my daughter. We def have fell out of love through the times with certain lines like: Hairdorables, body girls, fail fix, snapstar, bkind, Glo up and I’m sure I’m forgetting some. I have a strong attachment to wild hearts crew & cave club. I also still like Barbie - the 1st dolls we actually collected were Shoppie dolls by moose but fashionistas were def 2nd in line. Def in 2023 I don’t feel the need to buy like all the lol omg & tweens or RH/SH dolls that release. But I do have a weakness with wanting all g3 MH dolls 😂🤦🏻‍♀️ def gotta try to work on that. I have been good on not collecting every single Disney ily 4ever doll but I think I do have a good 75% of the fashion packs give or take.

I loved this video, thanks for sharing your thoughts!
For me personally, I love styling and painting my g3 monster high dolls if I believe changing something about them would make me happier. (For example, I painted my fearidescent Cleo's earrings gold because the orange colour was bothering me) but I feel like I'd be too scared to customize a g1 doll aside from rerooting if the hair was icky- g1 dolls just feel a lot more special now that they're no longer being released regularly.

I have gone through some of the same things, but mainly just being willing to take them out of the box. I prefer them in the box, but due to space, I have decided to remove at least some of them. But now I have to be careful about keeping them out of any situation where they could be damaged. I don't have a problem with trading clothes and restyling hair. However I don't cut hair because I like their hair long and I'm not really sure how to cut it. One of the things I find fascinating about other collectors is the ones, (and I follow a few here); who refuse to even change one thing about their outfit even if they don't like it. They make them wear clothes that don't look good, or sunglasses covering their eyes which doesn't always look good. I can understand it to a degree, but it's just not for me. If I don't like the way a doll comes boxed or something about their outfit, I change it. To me, just because box art shows the outfit a certain way, doesn't mean it has to be. But I do respect everyone's right to do what they want. The other way I have changed is the types of dolls I collect. I used to collect many different types of dolls, by brand, and material. Now I'm having to be more selective due to finances and space. So I really have to think of what I know I will want forever and what dolls reflect things about me & how I decorate. That might sound a bit odd, but it's just what i have to do right now 😃
