  • Our latest video exploring the treasures from the Staffordshire Hoard is a mystery story.
After hours of research, this is an object which still baffles the team of Anglo Saxon experts in the project team. As far as they know no comparable piece has ever been found and it has no immediately obvious use.

It is the top of a perfume bottle. The glass that held the perfume is obviously broken. The glass that attached to the lid used to spread the perfume has also been broken.

It's a lid, or a lid handle. If it has a pin underneath it, then it probably attached to a larger lid made of organic material, such as wood.

I checked on Orthodoxwiki and looked at one in use in a church. It is likely the top part of a censer joined to the bottom part by chains and also swung on chains with bells. by the Deacon and the Presbyter. There are angels around it. along with the joined arms which may be emblems of a tribe or chieftain. Check with local Orthodox Churches. The Roman Catholic censers are not the same in outline.

Further scholarship has shown that it is a priests head piece worn as part of a cap and as shown worn by the prophet Ezra in the bible Codex Amiatinus one of three produced by the Anglo Saxons in Northumbria. The one remaining now at Florence, Italy. The three bibles produced in the 7th century AD at about same as the Staffordshire Hoard..

Might it be the head decorations to a scepter? Perhaps the rounded "collar" laid upon wooden domed shoulder of it? Anything like this kind of idea found elsewhere?

saltcellar lid sounds right, or lid for a perfume cellar. or handle for a scepter, or finial of a lamp, or like you said, the top of a pointed ceremonial hat.

To me it looks like the pommel on a small saddle. Though it does look to be to delicate now.

If the garnets came mostly from India so too could the goldsmith or smiths.? The hoard appears for the most part to be by one hand.

Ever watch a Catholic mass? That looks like the top of the smoker thing priests swing around. Sorry, I don't know the name, but it could have been some type of censor top. The cylinder looks like a place to tie off a strap.
