- A unique scientific study conducted at the British Museum has revealed insights into the world of Anglo Saxon goldsmiths.
For the first time researchers have shown that these unknown craftsmen used sophisticated techniques to improve the colour of the gold by removing alloyed metals such as copper and silver from the surface of these objects in a process called “depletion”. This was a highly skilled task and scientists are unsure how it was achieved.
It also seems that items made for warriors had a higher gold content than women’s items such as jewellery.

the overall design stretched enough to superficially look like proper Style II but the band seems quite archaic - like decoration elements that you'll find on late gothic artefacts from around 500AD - many of them ended up in the North during that time and we got examples of it from the last deposits at the anglian sacrificial site in Thorsberg......wonder how old this piece really is.....

What I find interesting, is that the garnet and gold cloisonne pieces have been found all over the UK. Are these apparent disparate pieces actually linked?
I’ve wondered the same thing, such a fascinating possibility! It’s to bad the HWM isn’t interested in reading comments or answering questions. A lot of us will likely not in our whole lifetimes be able to visit the hoard let alone the country.

Beowulfs report to his king Hygelac is a true report of his fights and the nature where it happened and I have found the places and everything is fitting into the report. the danish king Hrodgard had retired and was taking toll from the west geats from his new meadhall near the beautiful very special whale mountain where he was buried under a mound of stones. The Hafsten SPA (search) is at the foot of this mountain and the meadhall was situated 2 km from it on top of a ridge and the Grendel chamber is situated 11 km west of the hall inside a ness where I found it with help of metal rods under the enormous grey stone on pillars. A magnetic place very very special. The chamber had a sluice and was enlighted by the builders who had brought the grendels to this place. There is a tunnel from an entry behind a cliff fall.

It wasn't a ships grave, it was spoil taken from the battle field, it's typical Anglo Saxon gold smithing that's found in England.

It's relative ..look at the tech involved in creating computers and programs to make our jewelry for us. If we lost modern technology then it would be no time before we were creating equally as exquisite jewellery by whatever means we had available. Also most of this wasn't meant for the masses it was high status and probably took a very long time to make. Today items of very high status are often as intricate if not more so.
