I went to Lew Wallace School from kindergarten through high school. The best teacher I ever had at Lew Wallace was also the best teacher my mother ever had. This teacher taught for 46 years. I think that twice I was playing basketball in the evening in the second floor gym and went up to her room on the third floor. This was in her 42nd year of teaching. She was busy making her plans for the next day. My mother may have taken algebra in her freshman year. I took analytic geometry and trigonometry in my senior year. Smiling was not one of this teacher's major strengths, but I think she was pleased when several of us got her a huge corsage at the end of the school year.
My mom went to that high school in Gary Indiana in the mid 70s until the 80s and moved to California sad to see Gary Indiana become this way my mom studied medical at that school during her teen years now as she looks back at these memory now it becomes a nightmare to where we go there and see family it's quite miserable and not exciting at all, its sad how its become a former shell of itself now that things are really bad it's quite sad to see buildings like that be ruined and destroyed and tampered with as well, everything inside that building is decaying and rotting away😢
So sad, Lew Wallce was at one time a very good school. But once the gangs came in thats when Gary , went to hell. Yes I was from Gary as most of my friends were, I went to Calumet high school.
I think Gary will come back, but not like it was in the past. The town is being demolished little by little leaving huge chunks of vacant land. One day the land will be valuable enough to redevelop.
New Orleans has a lot of life and tourism. New Orleans can be dangerous, but there is a lot of good to be found in the city. New Orleans is a much better city in comparison to Gary.
Gary became a ghost town because Mayer Hatcher was elected, everybody sold their homes, businesses closed down and ALL left as quickly as possible; hence the Gary of today. Very sad from what I remember. So sad to see Broadway all boarded up, abandoned homes of those who cared, streets littered, murders and drugs ramped, so sad. The very expensive houses doctors and lawyers use to live in, they can't even get people to live in them for free because they have all been literally trashed. It all started with Hatcher and went downhill from there, never to be again. It is heartbreaking when the people who wanted Gary got what they wanted and just destroyed the ENTIRE town from top to bottom, then they complain they are living like trash and don't have the mental capacity to understand why it ended up that way. "They" were bussed into OUR school and then the violence began, fighting, steel wool picks hid in their head wooly wool, gangs and one NEVER went to the bathroom without a few friends for fear "a gang" would be waiting for you. The worst part is "they" move on and continue to happily trash other towns and when that town is trashed, they pick up and do it all over again in a new town, like some kind of whirlwind of a mass cyclonic destruction that never stops. Let Gary be a lesson for all - when "the day comes" and your town is inflicted, and hopefully you will never have to experience this devastation - GET OUT AS QUICKLY AS YOU CAN because your time will be short before history is repeated.

My Dad was a student, then a teacher, and ultimately the Principal of Lew Wallace.
The Vorwalds lived on Johnson Street, just south of 45th Avenue, right?
