I grew up in this scene! Was a commentator briefly when Leiomy, Dashaun were starting out. Alloura was a dear friend (we were briefly incarcerated on Riker's former "gay unit"). The times were grand darling (pre-social media). Thank you for your work on our history and cross - contributions to music and popular culture!
My cousin used to show us his pictures from his days in the New York City Ballroom Scene....we loved it. This was the mid to late 90's and we were so small that we didn't truly appreciate it nor understand it. We lost him to AIDS in '99. Now that we are adults we all cry because he didn't live to see the global appreciation of what they did...so we used to have POSE watch parties in his honor and we still have a Drag Ball every year for his birthday and we participate in PRIDE events and support local chapters. We have 4 cousins born on his birthday so it's a huge weekend long bash!!! We love you and miss you...R.I.P....J.I.B.💋💋💋
You all did appreciate it every though y'all was young because your older cousin was sharing his life with you all. If he didn't share his life and adventures in NYC ballroom scene you and your cousins wouldn't have the great memories of him now.
That is so beautiful ❤ How amazing that there's so many family members born on his birthday, that's so cool! You're all really keeping his spirit alive ❤
They will always hate on us then steal our culture once it becomes “hip” to make it mainstream and have the audacity to claim they created it in the first place.
"The Underground sets the tone" is such a piece of eternal wisdom because of how true it is. Folks talk about how the strip club is a barometer for if a piece of music hits, and it makes sense that ballroom/gay clubs would be the same.
Meeting Rayceen is meeting royalty. Literally!! This video and history expressed here is pivotal to our culture on levels mainstream has yet to honor in its fullness. Thank you for your bravery and care!!!! My heart is overjoyed!!!!
I religiously watch all of your videos, this has to be the one closest to my heart. I love ballroom and grew up watching uploads of the latex ball and Kiki balls and now getting ready to make my debut, love this so much!!!
I rarely comment on YT videos but this one was truly exciting to watch. The history lesson here is so important for folks to watch. Can’t wait to share this. Well done!

@@VegSocialistThe European house invasion of the 2000s was amazing tho. While the ballroom scene of the 80s-90s was being developed in the States, Europe had its own club scene, specially in places like Sweden and Switzerland, and amongst the more notable movements, the underground club scene of the lgbtq clubs in Easter Germany was born. Music has always been the strongest voice of the lgbtq community, and the renaissance of house music (both Black and European) of the 2020s has been one of the best things to happen in the recent years.
Thank you for making this video! The archival footage in your videos really sets your channel apart. It's so exciting to see clips of things I've never EVER seen before! I love it!
Omg Thank you so much for this video This video has really taken me back So many great memories My first time ever going to NY in 86 the first two people I met were Kim Pendarvis and Efrem Dupree Please do a part two of this video
I'm saving this to my Humanstory, Vogue, Africa, and Ancestors lists here on RUclips. I believe all Humanstory aka history is vital information not to mention Music History as well.❤❤❤
Milik....you are wonderful! I so appreciate your diverse and creative videos! But your speaking voice is EVERYTHING as well! Much obliged to you for this channel ❤
wow, videos like this make me think that I have (and want) to lear so much more of this rich scene that is ballroom, / the gay underground couture that came before us
We need to continue to educate others about the ballroom scene and archive info about legendary moments that happened during those days and continue interview influential houses that were in the ballroom scene from the beginning bc it is important history!! Thank you for this video!!♥️
Like .. um … where’s the rest ?? Please ?!? I need MORE !!!! please ?!! 🙏🏼 … 😅 … (Seriously, though… Thank you SO much for uploading this wonderfully informative vid !!!! )
We have got to keep the history of our culture. I remember the first I time I saw a person vogue at the club in DC in the 80’s I was so amazed that I just stopped and watched
...And PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let's not forget gospel/shouting beats and how they would take you to church on a Saturday night at Traxx in D.C. OMG! I lose my mind on Small Black Church!♥

People can say what they want but the gays will always be ahead of their time 🌈
We truly are the trendsetters
They will always hate on us then steal our culture once it becomes “hip” to make it mainstream and have the audacity to claim they created it in the first place.

Oo chile💯💯😍😍😍 back in the day...at Esquelitas....children don't know👆🏾👆🏾👆🏾
Love the emphasis on Latin influence in the ball scene. I feel like that aspect often gets overlooked or discounted.🙏🏽❤️🔥
They were not the originators but they did contribute ❤
this is absolutely phenomenal. this is Black history.
I love this. We need more history straight from the mouths of those who were there and lived it.🙏🏽❤️🔥
Janet Jackson also had the dolls in her videos, “When I Think of You” and “Escapade.”
The lead guy from “What have you done for me lately” was a BQ that transitioned and is currently living as a woman
Thank you! What a great way to close out pride month! Your scholarship and knowledge give me something to be proud about.
As a Ballroom Legend - THANK YOU FOR THIS 🥹 - Legendary Mother Diamond Ebony
When we speak of ballroom music there is one name that is the most influential for the last 20 plus years and it's Vjuan Allure.

Hey, Miss Rayceen !❤
The Ha Dance - Masters at Work is THE definitive track that is a foundation in ballroom culture.

Thank you @BlackMusicArchive for giving a spotlight but also recognition to queer history
The saddest thing that happened to the house community is the separation from the ballroom community
Beyonce's Renaissance is highlighting how House originated from the Black and Brown Ballroom scene🪩🕺🏾
Absolutely, I remember when that happened throughout the 2000s.
