  • Longplay and review for "Viz (The Computer Game)" on the Amstrad CPC!
    This is quite possibly the rudest game I've covered on the channel, so be warned!! If you're offended by vulgar humour, body parts, rude words, smut, etc then this isn't the game and video for you! Based on the famous, popular and naughty British comic / magazine - Virgin had a difficult job of turning this into a game and getting stores to stock it!! But apparently they did and it sold very well, riding high in the charts for quite some time. They've definitely not watered down the content here either and it's most certainly in keeping with the magazine, so I doubt fans will be disappointed. But for gamers... is there actually a game worth playing here? Let's stick it in, wiggle that stick and find out... Fnurr! Fnurr!

      Nice! Did you have this on tape? If so how did you cope with that multiload hell?!

  • @CPCGameReviews
    @CPCGameReviews 2 года назад

    In reference to the multiload hell on the cassette version - it doesn't help that on one of the levels (I can't remember which one), you are told to insert a particular side of a cassette. However, the information you are given is incorrect - so players would end up wasting lots of time playing and rewinding the cassette, thinking that there was an error loading the level, when in fact they needed to insert a different cassette side all along!

      Oh blimey you DID tell me that as well, and I forgot to mention that! I had a lot of info to cram in this vid. But yea, that's the trouble of trying to force this type of game onto tape. I don't know why they just didn't make it all load sequentially and predetermine the bonus levels regardless of character instead of randomising them on the tape version - madness! I'm sure no-one would have cared.

    Can't fault the presentation. Looks like a fair bit of effort went into this. Guess it depends how much you like Viz

      Yup, mostly for fans of Viz or who get a kick out of naughty humour. The game will hold your interest for about two or three goes really.

    What's the name of the of product of coal? You can say that!
    A man-made mound or heap formed with the waste material (slag) as a by-product of coal mining

      Yup but all depends on the context and what it's been referred/applied to I guess!

    Would be interesting to compare some of the worst tape loading nightmares on the CPC. Its interesting that you mention North & South as that's my absolute worst experience of a tape version absolutly ruining the game. It didn't even have the train arcade levels, there's only one background for the battle screens and everything left (map to battle to arcade sequence) is split up between extensive loading on multiple cassettes. Its more like a demo or prototype, you can tell there's a decent game in there but your only getting samples. Came in a massive box too.

      My brother owned _North and South_ on cassette, and while the multiload was annoying, I recall it didn't really bother us that much at the time. We loved the game (and I still do to this day) and we were willing to put up with the multiload in order to play it.
      I think the reason why the train robbery section is missing is because it would make the multiload even more painful if it were included. It would have to fit on the same cassette side as the battle or fort sections and players would have to perform a lot more rewinding or fast forwarding in order to play whatever section the computer wanted to load.
      The disc version of _North and South_ also requires 128KB of RAM so that's probably the reason why the battle section only has one background. I certainly don't get the impression that the cassette version feels like a demo or prototype; it's just cut down for practical reasons and because the CPC464 and 464plus only have 64KB of RAM as standard.

      @@CPCGameReviews did you have the big box version with two tapes? I know it was on the AA covertape and wonder if it were further optimised, as that only seems to have been on one cassette. The big box multi-cassette version was the worst multi-load I encontered on the CPC with 10-15 mins loading between map, arcade section and battle :(

    • @CPCGameReviews
      @CPCGameReviews 2 года назад

      @@TheRetroArchive Yes, we had the big box version with two cassettes. The version on the _Amstrad Action_ covertape is cut down even more (there is no introductory sequence, and the ending screen is missing), and in my opinion, it's even more painful to play because you have to constantly swap the cassette around, and because of this, you can't tell where on the cassette the next file you need to load is unless you rewind the cassette all the way back to the beginning!

    • @Xyphoe
      @Xyphoe  2 года назад

      Yea they probably should have just made North & South disk only. It's ridiculous trying to do that game on tape. Imagine "Pirates!" on tape? At least that was disk only, and that was back in 1987!!
