You will find on my channel that I try to be more concise and focusing on what's essential when I teach something. For example, I've made a 2 minutes video on how to change strings with locking tuners, and the average time for that subject on RUclips is over 10 minutes. Some people just want to get the most watching time. I want to provide the most value. Thanks Kevin :)
Very solid and well thought out video. Glad you took the time to match the repeats and didn't waste a lot of time playing them one after the other so that we were able to hear an honest comparison. Thanks again.
I have that ML JR, it is a great pedal ❤ If you set it just a bit shorter than you have and crank the mod, run it into an ambient reverb and it makes it bloom.
Very smart pedal comparison, nice comments on the pedals. I would pick the DIG pedal for clean, modulated arpeggios, phrases and ambient stuff. The Diamond pedal is far warmer and it can sound better on clean, slow soloing and classic / progressive rock passages. Tape delays offer more solid tones through an amp's lead channel. All these pedals are not cheap, but they offer quality, innovation and are pedal board friendly. Just a click or two below the costlier and bulkier holy grail delay pedals such as Moog, Cornish, S.I.B., etc.
Very good point! I think it would turn it more into an analog sounding delay, because it would be darker sounding. It couldn't sound like a tape, because you still miss the artefacts, the bias, wow & flutter (etc.) that make it sound like a tape!
Real tape delays are actually very crisp with preserved transients and while the repeats may wobble a bit, and get quieter, they do not degrade like an analog bucket brigade. The El Cap adds pitch modulation, wow/flutter, and the “tape type” adds the degraded sound you hear, as if its an old used tape. If you go check out some demoes of restored tape machines, they sound very clear. The T Rex Replicator is a poor example. The new Fulltone is pretty good.
I skipped over the individual pedals for running a DD-500 into a Timeline... That combo covers everything and the stacking possibilities are endless... ☺️
My opinion from what I've heard: Digital: bright and exact copy of original sound Tape: Warm and more noisy than digital Analog: Vintage, distorted most noisy of all Thanks for the video !
Analog was the warmest of the three. Was expecting to really like the tape. I did not! The digital was too perfect. No warmth or feeling. Thanks for showing us!
Fantastic review! Nailed my own interests in the different types. Helped me save big bucks by not having to buy one, just to want another...Also, your playing really highlights the delay. It is beautiful...For me, I like the modulation of the DIG just slightly better than the others, but as you say, they all 3 can fit different needs. Maybe the Timeline is the most economical then.
Epoch Belle is the pedal I want for delay next, I have the Dispatch Master by EQD and it's great but a little limited and very digital (which is great for certain tones). Incredible pedal though!!
If I just want 1 type of delay on my pedalboard, do you think it's possible to make do with just a digital delay? Currently I have a DIG version 2, and that has a tone knob to kinda make things darker when required. Assuming it will be used in normal and ambient context, though perhaps reverb makes more of a difference for ambient.
I'm new to the idea of tape delay so it was really instructive to hear these side by side! That Strymon El Capitan sounds otherworldly and just the idea of playing with this box is giving me goosebumps! I could say it's expensive but for what it does (I've watched other videos) I think it's a really great value. Now let's see if I can rob a bank or fall over a bag of money...
One thing at a time, building a pedalboard takes time. I had to sell many pedals to get the funds for the El Capistan back then. I hope you will have the pleasure to get your hands on one someday!
I think a lot of companies get the tape emulation wrong. It depends on how old/ dirty the tape and machine are, but tape repeats are bright with the low end rolled off.
Another Really Nice "on all-the -time delay pedal" - (which won't muddy-up your sound) is: the Analogman ARDX20 Dual Analog Delay. Really great for adding David Gilmour-esque layers under your playing. Awesome unit.
Good job, but surely those pedals sound good with other settings too. I don't care as much for digital delay as I do for vintage/tape/echo. I like the El Cap and the Diamond a lot, I love the TC Alter Ego X4, the Empress Vintage Modified Superdelay, I love the new Walrus and the Belle Epoche, which does a very impressive emulation of the Echoplex EP3. By the way, an EP3 can sound pretty pristine -- not glassy/snappy like a digital delay, but, depending on the settings and depending on the condition of the tape and heads, the repeats can sound a lot closer to the original sound.
I am torn between the EL Cap and the MLJ for my Acoustic Pedalboard? I currently have the DD-500 (on my big board) and I Love it = Toolbox full of Delays with deep-dive tone sculpting (so I have Digital, Analog & Tape and many others). Digital steps-on-your initial playing too much. Clutters your sound. For Acoustic Guitar - I prefer either Tape or Analog. Leaning towards the El Cap ???
Michael Caz hey bud I’ve purchased way too many delays for acoustic. It’s a tough thing to add effects too. It depends on your pick ups for one. I was not a fan of the el cap. Sounded too muffled. The Dig is nice but too bright if you have an undersaddle. I love my volante. It’s amazing! But I am considering the MLJ as well. It sounds warm and dreamy!
Thank you for the demo. It really gives you an idea of each delay type. Digital is great for rhythmic uses, such as the dotted eighth (although The Edge used an analog delay), Tape and Analog delays are great for adding ambience, but of course, all three pedals are very versatile. For example, on the DIG, you can set it to 12 bit for a different character or you can make the El Capistan fairly clean. I think tape is my favourite for 50's style slapback effects or Pink Floyd style wash.
The edge only used an analog delay early on most of the famous dotted eighth stuff is rack digital delays similar to the ones modelled in the DIG pedal great sounding delays though being the SDD3000 and the TC 2290.
Excellent demonstration. Merci Antoine! The only concern for me was that the Diamond Memory Lane seemed to be at a lower volume, which maked if difficult for me to judge & compare its harmonic content to the two other pedals. Also, it seemed as if the Memory Lane did not have the same dynamic range & 'punch' that the Strymon pedals had. I do not know if that is a reflection of lower quality components or poorer design, or if it was due to some other factor.
Thanks :) I can tell you exactly what it is! It's because the Diamond is a mono pedal and the Strymons are stereo. It creates a difference in perceivable volume and dynamic range, but in fact, my amps are recorded at the same volume for all the pedals. What I should've done is to record all the pedals in mono even if the Strymon have the potential (and sound better) in stereo. I realized that after doing the video, but decided to post it anyways instead of redoing it completely. I also mentionned it in the description box.
Thank you for your explanation Antoine! My apologies for missing the relevent information in the description box. That's what happens when I try to multi-task, instead of focusing on just the video. :)
I have a lesson on that coming on the channel later this month. Short answer is: I think it's better to combine 2 different types to blend the different tones. Digital and Analog. Digital and Tape. etc. Just not two with almost the same tone.
Awesome. Maybe you can help me...what would be better for me? I need more ambient sounds than dry, so tell me which of these combos sounds best: 1) Strymon Timeline Delay, Strymon Blu Sky Reverb, Strymon DIG delay, and Walrus Descent Reverb OR... 2) Strymon Timeline Delay, Strymon Blu Sky Reverb, Walrus Descent Reverb, and Strymon El Capistan What would be the better setup?
If I understand, you will only swap the DIG for El Capistan, and that's the same pedals for both option. Both setups will work extremely well for ambient sounds, you cannot go wrong! If you talk about the order, that's a lot better to put your delays before your reverbs from the most subtle to biggest effect. In both setups, I would do: 1) El Capistan > Timeline in ping pong setting (for a wider sound) > Blue Sky (shorter reverb) > Descent (biggest reverb) 2) Timeline in a mono setting > DIG in ping pong setting (for a wider sound) > Blue Sky (shorter reverb) > Descent (biggest reverb) Both reverbs are interchangeable too, but keep in mind to keep the most prominent setting for the last one. That's what works best for me!
Awesome video! I personally use the MXR Carbon Copy. I love to make some sound effects with this pedal. For example on one of my songs, I do a quick strum on my guitar, the delay bounces, then I raise the regen knob to near full blast. With reverb plugged in, it becomes awesome! Just wanted to share that, lol :)
If you go on my Bandcamp, listen to the first song of the EP ''Under The Crystal Tree Part 1''. You will hear that kind of delays in the intro! I also play with the time knob a lot too :)
Very nicely done. My only suggestion would be to highlight which ever pedal you are demoing in case your viewer glances away from the video. And then is unsure ( momentarily only which pedal you're demoing not that I looked away from the screen) really a very nice job. Somebody suggested you use Distortion I can see why you didn't it's hard to hear exactly how it delays sounds and how they repeat sound if you have a lot of distortion in your signal it changes it I mean it's a great sound but it makes it more difficult to actually hear how the delay sounds I wish people would do what you did with wah-wah pedals and actually play them all clean everybody always uses Distortion and you can't tell how the hell the wah pedal in question sounds not everyone's trying to play a Jimi Hendrix lick or play the solo to Sweet child of mine..
Thanks for the feedback! I think that you can look at the ''bypass'' or ''on/off'' LEDs to see which pedal is engaged though. I don't have the pretention to say I make the most perfect demos. Clean sounds are just more to my liking and better to to distinguish the subtleties, imo. Thanks for watching :)
Thanks for your video. I'm thinking about to buy an Strymon but I didn't know the different betwen them. At the moment I have the Carbon Copy, which is a very nice delay but simple. I'm going to keep it anyway but I want something else with more possibilities. Being honest, it is difficult to tell you my favourite pedal. El Capistan has a really nice warm sound, but with the second exemple, really liked the DIG. Also, I want it to use with different kind of guitars I have, so the sound probably will change. Nice review.
I use an XVive analog Delay which is a truly amazing pedal because it can do anything from fake spring rev, slapbacks, lead fattening to dotted eigth rhythmic support (not even 100 bugs lol). I really don't like processors in the signal path! But nowadays, technology has improved and many upper class digitals offer analog wet through which means that only the repeats (or the reverb tail in case of a reverb) comes from the processor, and the original (dry) sound just bypasses it. I feel like getting a TC flashback for a crystal clear stereo sound and the ENDLESS possibilities you get with it. I just love delaylaylaylaylaylaylay
Sorry, no tabs for this one. By I can encourage you to subscribe to my channel and to listen to my ''Chordal Lessons'' playlist. You have 40 free lessons where I show you tons of nice sounding chords like these ones and how to use them. Cheers!
Thank you for the video. Interesting comparison but not entirely fair because you connected the 2 Strymon pedals in stereo whereas the Diamond is mono.
What’s your take on getting DIG vs Brigadier? I already have El Cap. I’m going for more analog or bucket brigade delay sounding. Or would El Cap or Dig be able to do the job by tweaking them? :) thanks for your advice!
DIG won't do anything analog sounding. I have no experience with the Brigadier, but I'm sure it's very good also! I like my Diamond Memory Lane Jr. for that sound and the MXR Carbon Copy is always a safe choice for analog delays!
Noticed by any listener in the audience? Of course, not! Noticed by some musicians? Maybe. Noticed by yourself? Yes! And that's the most important. When you got a sound that you love and that is unique to you, you tend to be more comfortable and play better... and THAT is what is noticed more in a live situation. You might think choosing a delay pedal is futile, but for me it is not. It makes me confident.
The only way you could do that is with an expression pedal controlling the delay time, as if you were turning the Time knob in real time. I don't know of any pedal that does that automatically! Interesting idea
@@AntoineMichaudGuitar so something like Strymon Timeline could possibly do it? it has a expression pedal input, and ofc i mean to do it without oscillation :) Hmm and i guess things like Helix etc.. You can assign anything to the expression pedals in them.
Thank you for the delay comparison. I have both the Strymon DIG and the El Capistan. For my sound I like the DIG right now. I just purchased the El Capistan last week, so its sound is new to me. I am playing through a single Mesa Boogie amp. I would like to try a stereo setup. Do stereo pedals send a slightly different signal to each amp?
It really depends on the pedal, a true tape delay simulation will not have a stereo spread although the Lcap seems to do something stereo but maybe it's just because I'm using 2 amps. Some of the pedals will either have an option of ping-ponging or actually go into that mode when you hook it up in stereo
Yes, pedals send a slightly different signal. With the El Capistan, it's just the modulation that is spread differently on both amps to give an impression of movement between the 2 amps. With the DIG, it can also send 2 separated delays, one on each amp, because it is a Dual delay.
Hey, which one between the Dig and Memory Lane Jr do you think is more versatile?? None of them have presets to save but I think Dig have more things to play with, and to play live, etc... Want to buy one of those two! But not sure yet :-/
In essence digital delay is a perfect repeat of your signal exactely like you played it while analog delay slightly changes each repeat. Tape delay is the same as analog but with an unique sounding filter over delayed sound. People like analog/tape delay because repeats sound like a second guitar when the sound overlaps with your playing while digital kinda sounds bad, you can hear it in the video.
hi, if I use a digital delay, will it transform my entire analog chain signal into digital, losing the advantage of having analog signal on quality? thanks
If the pedals are great quality and well designed, you shouldn't worry about having digital and analog pedals on the same board. That doesn't change anything. It is more the bypass of the pedals (true bypass, buffered bypass) and the order of the pedals in your chain that will affect your sound the most. Cheers!
Many digital delays and reverbs have an analogue dry signal path, so no ADA conversion on dry signal. You'd have to google the particular model to find out. Other digital effects such as tremolo require the whole signal to be converted in order to process it
Like you said, Antoine, it's not about “favorites”. I love my Dig, sometimes the pure, pristine brightness of it is exactly what I want to hear. It's definitely a digital sound, which I really like. Plus I find the Dig really easy to dial in the exact sound I want. Sure it's limited to what it does, but what it does is fabulous. The El Capistan (or the Tape setting on my Source Audio Nemesis), is very organic and warm and almost human sounding. I love the way it can be set to degrade and get warmer and warmer, and sometimes I like to set the modulation (wow/flutter, whatever,) way high and have it just degenerate away. I couldn't be happy without a good tape delay. The Analog delay you showed didn't do much for me. Yes, warmer than the Dig; yes, the highs roll-off, but it sounded lifeless to me. I have a Carbon Copy, but it hasn't earned a place on my board; it just doesn't seem to have any particular noteworthy character (sorry all you Carbon Copy fans. Maybe it's my 67 year old ears). Thanks for an interesting topic Antoine!
I don't know why people like the El Cap so much. I have it and it seems limited. Sure, it sounds great, but the delay controls are confusing to me. When you toggled the DIG to "deep" mode, it sounded just as beautiful as the El Cap. So if both sound great, wouldn't the DIG be the smart choice because it offers many more delay pattern manipulation options? What do you think?

These reviews are bonkers.
My favourite delay type is always the one I don't own yet . . . .
Haha. #fact
Exatamente
G.A.S kicking hard!
Basic, straight forward videos like this are incredibly useful. Big thumbs up from me!
Thank you man!! :)
Each pedal is so distinct but they all sound incredible!
This video is exactly what I needed! So glad finding it after sorting through dozens of 30 minute + videos only explaining one or two pedals
The tape is my favorite. It's warmer, and has the best tone overall.
Digital: bright
Tape: dirty
Analog: warm
El Capistan! Something about that degrading repeat, love it!
Joseph Gontarek I agree :)
They are all very nice, for different styles. The Memory lane is probably my favourite. Thx for the review.
Very solid and well thought out video. Glad you took the time to match the repeats and didn't waste a lot of time playing them one after the other so that we were able to hear an honest comparison.
Thanks again.
Thank you. I was going to buy the El Capistan, and came here to check it out but found out I like the Strymon DiG more so I'll get that one.
I have that ML JR, it is a great pedal ❤ If you set it just a bit shorter than you have and crank the mod, run it into an ambient reverb and it makes it bloom.
Very nice. Thanks for the single notes and chords to really hear the delays.
Strymon DiG for me
What if you had a digital delay but turned down the mix of the highs or brightness wouldn't that create a more tape sounding delay?
Very good point! I think it would turn it more into an analog sounding delay, because it would be darker sounding. It couldn't sound like a tape, because you still miss the artefacts, the bias, wow & flutter (etc.) that make it sound like a tape!
AndroxineVortex If you use the Dig in 12 bits mode, it sounds much more warmer 😉
Wow thank you so much for this, you’ve saved me a lot if frustration. I thought what I wanted was analogue delay but I actually want digital.
Glad it helped!
The Dig is giving me strong 2290 vibes.
Demo starts 1:30
Your pedal tips are the best in RUclips. Thanks for share! :)
I skipped over the individual pedals for running a DD-500 into a Timeline... That combo covers everything and the stacking possibilities are endless... ☺️
I like your chords very much. Would you mind showing these chords?
I my opinion a combination of digdelay and the diamand would be great.
Thanks man! Just go over to my website and take my free course on chords: www.ambientguitaracademy.com/ambient-guitar-chord-structures
GeeZ that DIG is awesome but I like them all.
Love the tape delay.
Also my favorite type :)
me too! I have an El Capistan and it totally rules. Plus you don't have to deal with the mechanical issues of a real tape machine!
Perfectly good video! Short, to the point and well explained, thank you!
My opinion from what I've heard:
Digital: bright and exact copy of original sound
Tape: Warm and more noisy than digital
Analog: Vintage, distorted most noisy of all
Thanks for the video !
Analog was the warmest of the three. Was expecting to really like the tape. I did not! The digital was too perfect. No warmth or feeling. Thanks for showing us!
If you run the El Cap and Dig at the same time, I wonder how much the mixed sound of digital+tape would sound like analog

Yes, I think a digital delay with a tone knob and modulation controls is the best option to get the most variety of delay tones with only one type!

Can you have both analog and digital pedals in your chain runnong into a P.A?
Hey Monochrome you could have used the MXR Carbon Copy which is a true Analog delay instead of the Diamond Mem. Lane which is digital.
I could! But I don't have it :-P

Wow cool comparison. What do you think would sound better on a bass guitar?
Thanks for the video man, I always had questions about this and you solved them in five minutes.
Thank you for the demo. It really gives you an idea of each delay type. Digital is great for rhythmic uses, such as the dotted eighth (although The Edge used an analog delay), Tape and Analog delays are great for adding ambience, but of course, all three pedals are very versatile. No problem. I actually added this information in the description box because of some relevant comments in here, so don't feel bad for it :)
The tape delay is very haunting which I like.
experimenting on stacking delays, which do you think is better? Tape to digital or vice versa?
I have a lesson on that coming on the channel later this month. Short answer is: I think it's better to combine 2 different types to blend the different tones. Digital and Analog. Digital and Tape. etc. Just not two with almost the same tone.
The diamond memory jr pedal, is a DIGITAL pedal designed with an analog voice. Still it Sound amazing IMO eventhough it’s a digital pedal 😉
Awesome. Maybe you can help me...what would be better for me? I need more ambient sounds than dry, so tell me which of these combos sounds best:
1) Strymon Timeline Delay, Strymon Blu Sky Reverb, Strymon DIG delay, and Walrus Descent Reverb

Monochrome Seasons thanks man!! That sounds awesome. once I get the next two pedals, I'll set it up!

Monochrome Seasons Could you tell me which one? I would love to hear it.
If you go on my Bandcamp, listen to the first song of the EP ''Under The Crystal Tree Part 1''. You will hear that kind of delays in the intro! I also play with the time knob a lot too :)

dang, you do great videos and reviews...very helpful. thank you.
Thanks man, no problem!
Great video, very useful! Will the El Capistan let you emulate dual tapes in series? Thanks
Empress tape delay for my part . but i m going to couple it with a DIG one soon

Diamond and dig are amazing
Never selling my Memory Lane Jr!
Thank you for the video. Interesting comparison but not entirely fair because you connected the 2 Strymon pedals in stereo whereas the Diamond is mono.
Yes I know, I used what was available to me. I hope people are able to distinguish the sound quality regardless of the mono/stereo connection!
You still have the MLJR? Wouldn’t mind hearing it against the Timeline and/or Brigadier
I liked your video
I have a question
What is nicer for the music of the metal
abdu k For metal, we hear most often digital delays, because they are peircing and cut a lot more through agressive sounds
thx to u mr .....often whene play solo ?
abdu k Yes, it's always good on solos
thx to so so much mr mono god bless u
Tape delay sounds so lush, I could use it for everything!
Hi, are you using which patch models?
Diamond is the best!
Monochrome Seasons thanks for your reply :) love ur videos
subtle difference but would it be noticed in a mix / live situation ?
Noticed by any listener in the audience? Of course, not! Noticed by some musicians? Maybe. Noticed by yourself? Yes! And that's the most important. When you got a sound that you love and that is unique to you, you tend to be more comfortable and play better... and THAT is what is noticed more in a live situation. You might think choosing a delay pedal is futile, but for me it is not. It makes me confident.
Excellent video...thanks. Your sound is incredible!
Merci Antoine. Excellent demo!
VERY GOOD REVIEW!
THANKS MAN!
Is there a delay that has not fixed delay time but getting slower on each repeat?
Or would it be too crazy algorythm to make?
The only way you could do that is with an expression pedal controlling the delay time, as if you were turning the Time knob in real time. I don't know of any pedal that does that automatically! Interesting idea
@@AntoineMichaudGuitar so something like Strymon Timeline could possibly do it? it has a expression pedal input, and ofc i mean to do it without oscillation :)
Hmm and i guess things like Helix etc..
Do stereo pedals send a slightly different signal to each amp?
love in stereo setup!! in my dream!...i play Bogner 101b
It really depends on the pedal, a true tape delay simulation will not have a stereo spread although the Lcap seems to do something stereo but maybe it's just because I'm using 2 amps. Some of the pedals will either have an option of ping-ponging or actually go into that mode when you hook it up in stereo
Give the Lcap Sometime I'm sure you'll be impressed with the warmth and depths of the delays
Yes, pedals send a slightly different signal. With the El Capistan, it's just the modulation that is spread differently on both amps to give an impression of movement between the 2 amps. With the DIG, it can also send 2 separated delays, one on each amp, because it is a Dual delay.
Thanks, that helps. Congratulations on 2K subscribers!
Hey, which one between the Dig and Memory Lane Jr do you think is more versatile?? None of them have presets to save but I think Dig have more things to play with, and to play live, etc...
Want to buy one of those two! But not sure yet :-/
Ebel Aquino The DIG is definitely more versatile, because it's basically 2 delays in one pedal!
Monochrome Seasons Thanks! That will be my choice!
what guitar/amp are you using here? great vid!
Guitar: Suhr Classic Antique stratocaster
Amps: Suhr Badger 30 and Vox AC15
DiG 3:03
Tape 3:35
Analog 4:08
Three incredible pedals
In essence digital delay is a perfect repeat of your signal exactely like you played it while analog delay slightly changes each repeat. Tape delay is the same as analog but with an unique sounding filter over delayed sound. People like analog/tape delay because repeats sound like a second guitar when the sound overlaps with your playing while digital kinda sounds bad, you can hear it in the video.
What delay would you recommend for Pink Floyd?
Definitely the Catalinbread Echorec, the most pink-floydish delay pedal of them all!!
muchas gracias, excelente exposición...
What patch cables are you using?? Thanks
George L's 6''
hi, if I use a digital delay, will it transform my entire analog chain signal into digital, losing the advantage of having analog signal on quality?
Other digital effects such as tremolo require the whole signal to be converted in order to process it
May i ask how you record these stereo?
Very useful, thank you
l really like the Catalinbread Echorec, Thanks for the demo.
Martin Reid I'd love to have one too! thanks man :)
Well done.Bravo!
Thank you !
Anyone use the diamond memory lane jr with acoustic guitar?
next one is reverb! :p awesome vid, man! love to see your vids!!
Thanksssss :D
Is that stereo in on the DIG?
Exactly! I moved the jumper inside the pedal and used a stereo breakout cable coming from the El Capistan.
Merci poto ça déchire 😊
Good job!
My favourite delay type - Strymon 🙂
Wait. So is the Diamond emulating an analog or is it a true analog pedal?
The Diamond is a digital delay emulating analog (but doing it very convincingly!)
good test man!!
i waiting my new dig and bigsky reverb!!;-) but i want now el capistan :-(
One step at a time. Take your time to really explore your new pedals, you will be in ambient heaven ;)
which cables are those?
George L's patch cables.
0:28 I was just about to say..... aren't they all digital...? haha.
El Capistan sounded like a delay with chorus and rotary, I guess it depends on the settings.
What do you think?
tnx 4 info!
