His lyrics are that of a prophet's vision. One of my very favorite songs from a favorite singer/songwriter. We saw him twice live and had a chance to talk to him. very nice and down to earth. He is still sorely missed .
I love testimonial comments. Cool you got to see him victoria.
I met him in San Diego when he was touring for the album. Had a great conversation with him about making songs, we were lucky enough to be the opening band at the show. He was a very nice down to Earth guy with amazing skills as a songwriter.
According to Steve Albini, who recorded this version of the song, everything you're hearing here was recorded live, 12 musicians all in the same room, completely unrehearsed and they just kept it this way with all the blemishes, this was very deliberately unpolished.
Yeah, sometimes I like Albini and sometimes I don't. I think he did a great job on this song. I forgot to mention him during the reaction.
I had read somewhere it was the first and only take and no one really knew how it would end, so it just kinda fades out.
i love this album dearly. always happy to see new people reach molina's music.

The album closer, Hold On Magnolia, is my favorite, but the entire record is an achievement. Rest in power Jason.

That’s Mike ‘slo mo’ Brenner on lap steel. One of the best around. As others have pointed out, this was the first take. I’m not sure that the other band members had even heard it, maybe just the chord changes? Jason was a force of nature, and you hear it right here in this song.

@@wallbangerreactions I find the album “what comes after the blues “ to be a sorta follow up to this one. His great songs all sound really organic to me.
The algorithm masters floated this up to me just yesterday. (probably related to the passing of Steve Albini). Never heard of the song before, nor Jason. Now the poetry and mood of the performance are locked in my brain forever. Funny how that works. This kind of artistic directness is hard to duplicate.

Just stumbled across your videos mate! I love how you let the tunes play out and pause sparingly. Something that alot of reaction videos lack.
You should look into the work of David Berman of silver jews. Definitely a band that floats in the same melancholic, introspective areas as jason molina and sun kil moon. 'trains across the sea' on their debut album 'Starlite walker' is an incredible track that puts me into a reflective state almost every time I playback. Id highly recommend.

Firstly, many of my older reactions are paused once or twice to prevent copyright blocking, but now I'm letting the videos run and taking my chances. Thank you for the feedback.
Secondly, I owned Bright Flight for years and sold it before moving to Mexico. Great music and writing, though the singer can be way off pitch sometimes. That detracts, I think.

Man I really wish I could have heard him live, too bad I learned of him only after his passing. He performed in Belgrade of all places in 2005, I was like 10 at the time. It's fascinating that I never would have guessed him even knowing about my country's existence let alone playing here.

i wish i had been old enough to appreciate him while he was still alive. it stings a bit listening to his records, especially this one because it feels like his requiem since he’s been dead for 11 years.

@@wallbangerreactions crazily enough that i left that comment yesterday, the producer of this song as well as much of Molina’s music , Steve Albini, passed away of a heart attack today.
Oh my! I hadn't heard. I just mentioned him in a video I uploaded today: Sprain.
I'm really into all manners or Alt Rock, Noise Rock, Hardcore Punk etc as far as the noisy and abrasive goes. But somehow Songs Ohia's/Jason Molina's work is on the top, it speaks to me on such a deep level. I don't usually care that much about lyrics but anything Molina the lyrics are already front and center.
If you haven't watched my Magnolia Electric Co. reactions, that's where I really got on board with Molina....probably because it was not my first time.

Search for the series “We Have Signal.” But I actually wanted to comment to say that I think the female voice you hear in the backing vocals is Scout Niblett who is also very much worth checking out.

I think Axxess and Ace is his best work, but this album comes close for sure. You should listen to some stuff of Axxess and Ace for sure, like How to be Perfect Men. If anyone succeeds you / This will be her song to know that / I will get it wrong.
