I personally knew Patrik Stefan when he played with the Long Beach IceDogs. As a matter of fact, he and his father Karl shared my old bedroom at my parent's house in Belmont Shore. As an extremely talented player from Pribram, Czech., Patrik had all the offensive skills; skating, passing, scoring. Scored one of the sickest SO goals I've ever seen live. The problem, he should have NEVER PLAYED in the IHL. He had a target on his back the entire time. Remember, the IHL was a good league but included many 'journeymen' aka hockey hacks looking to make it to the show. His back to back concussions in one season did him in and shut him down until he was drafted by Atlanta, who did an absolutely PISS POOR job in researching his history, along with selecting & developing him. Patrik's single biggest issue that I saw; He was emotionally, physically, psychologically SOFT. He lacked all sense of toughness or grit. All he did when home from the rink was sleep, eat fried food that his dad made, and played my old nintendo system for hours upon hours. Let's hope his son, James, becomes a better hockey player than his father.
He was thought to be a strong dead-puck-era center. Not a great skater, BUT he was strong, he could hold on to the puck in traffic, he had talent and good size. The real clincher was that he had been playing against men in pro leagues for three (!) seasons before his draft year, which is insane. Shame that injuries did him in - people just assume he wasn’t talented when it wasn’t the full truth
there are many draft-busts. But First overalls are probably Stefan, Daigle, Yakopov...in no perticular order. Chistov, Kilger and Holmqvist are a few first-rounders that come to mind as busts when I think of Ducks picks
While Daigle is a bust, he is overstated as a huge bust. He played over 600 games, was over half a point per game (decent middle six scorer) and scored over 50 points three times (once late in his career with the Wild). Bust, Absolutely. 2nd worst in NHL history, not so much. Since 1980 (The drafts pre-80s were weird and often didn't include all of the best players, who could be scooped up before the draft) 1. 1st, 2012 - Nail Yakupov 350gp - 62g - 74a - 136pts, Career High in a Season 17g (2013), 33pts (2014-15) 2. 1st, 1983 - Brian Lawton 483gp - 112g - 154a - 266pts, Career High in a Season 21g 44Pts (1986-87), and he played mostly in the late 80s 3. 1st, 1980 - Doug Wickenheiser 556gp - 111g - 165a - 276pts, Career High in a Season 25g, 55a (1982-83), His entire career was in the 80s 4. 1st, 1999 - Patrik Stefan 455gp - 64g - 124a - 188pts, Career High in a Season 14g, 40pts (2003-04), lower numbers, but played 3/4 of his career in the dead puck era. 5. 1st, 1993 - Alexandre Daigle 616gp - 129g - 198a - 327pts, Career High in a Season 26g (1996-97), 51pts (3 Times 93-94, 96-97, 2003-04) Daigle wasn't a good player for a first overall, but he is really dumped on for various reasons. He got a huge contract as a rookie before he had proven anything, the Senators stayed horrible for years after drafting him, he wasn't all that interested in hockey, didnt really want to improve himself and had a terrible attitude, etc. But he scored at a rate higher than modern pick Alexis Lafreniere, and did so at different points in his career. He was definitely the most frustrating player of the bunch, because he had the raw talent to be a HoF player, where Yakupov, Lawton, Wickenheiser and Stefan probably couldn't have been. All things considered, I think Daigle's career gets short changed because he came directly after Legends such as Pierre Turgeon, Mike Modano, Mats, Sundin and Owen Nolan. He was bad but not nearly the worst and arguably, if you include goalies on this list, Rick Dipietro could also be a head of him.
@@charlesmclearn4642 I think a huge reason Daigle is seen as such a bust as he was taken ahead of Pronger and Kariya. It was one of the richest drafts of the 90's so he is the victim of hindsight. But it also did not help when he was the highest paid rookie ever before he even did a thing. Wickenheiser was an very poor choice indeed. Especially when everyone thought Montreal was going to pick Savard. Oops. But Yakupov is absolutely the worst. It was not that he was a terrible player but its work ethic and attitude were so bad it cost him minutes and no one wanted to play with him. Now it was not the greatest draft. Like when Morgan Riley and Filip Forsberg are essentially the best players from the first round. Meh...
Iirc, Stefan missing that empty net and then the Oilers scoring and going to overtime ended up costing Edmonton the 1st overall pick in the next draft which ended up being Patrick Kane
This guy just had too many injuries. After his last concussion he was just too afraid of another one and refused to go to the high-traffic areas on the ice, in the corners or in front of the net. I still consider Yakupov a bigger bust though.
Is it a coincidence that the NHL uploaded Mason McTavish missing an empty net goal with comments about him impersonating Patrik Stefan and this video came up when Googling the reference? What's worse? Patrik Stefan missing an empty net goal? Or Mason McTavish missing the empty net for a hat trick?
why is Daigle even in this? He was superior to both of them and did it in Gary's clutch n grab era of shenanigans, one of the very reasons he left the NHL.
@petrj.freddiedrahovzal2154 yes, we all know they didn't. Never said they didn't. I've done my homework for years. It's ok to pretend what could have been. Burke was still a douche, regardless.
Watched that missed empty netter live on TV and absolutely lost my mind when the Oilers scored! I’ll never forget that moment
I like these videos thanks for making them

Wow thanks for sharing, thats cool!
he wanted to copy Radek Bonk. Be a Radek Bonk version 2.0, also a Czech.
Im curious, what game titles did you see him play?

Ooooo thats interesting! Didnt realize that!
top three total point guys from 99: henrik, daniel and zetterberg.

Leave the guy alone you vulchers
12 seconds and no views?
Bro has fallen off..
😂 slow n steady!
Burke was such a prick. He really ruined any hope of the Sedins playing against each other like the Staals and the Tkachuks. What a douche!!!!
Only they (Sedins) did NOT WANT to play against each other... Do your homework...
