Old Man used to call them a microwave, because you could do a bird in the back in 2 mins.... Different times....
😅😅😅😅😅😅 hysterical,, go dad
That’s great.👍👍
After a 2 minute seeing to, none of them returned for an encore.
Was your Dad called Flash?
I shouldn't laugh, but.... 🤣
@@jonb3311Is that similar to what we refer to them now,it looked like a smashed crab.
I used to have a sandman. It was proper knackered with smoke out the exhaust and peeling paint, but it was fantastic at the drive in on a Saturday night. I would have some smokes, a couple of beers and a packed bong and me and my girl would get in the back and have our own party. Those were the days my friend.
Mike & Elvis - Its a Panel Van ya flogs!
They think they are being trendy
Shaggin wagon....!!!
Poms what ya expect from them
In 1977 I bought my very first car, it was a 1971 HG Holden panel van, had a 186 (3.0L) straight six, and a ‘three on the tree’ manual gearbox.
I then gave it a heart transplant, put in a 307 (5.0L) Chevy V8, with a two speed powerglide auto, it went like a rocket!
If only I still had the van (and the beat up HK Monaro I took the 307 Chev out of), both would be worth a bloody fortune.
Anyway....
Surfing wasn’t out thing, shaggin was our thing.
Friday night at the Dundas drive-in, all the panel vans were parked backwards at the back, tail gate open, laying on the mattress with your girl watching the movie. At regular intervals the tail gates of the vans would close and a bit of shaggin would take place, those were the days!
The old panel van was usually called a ‘shaggin wagon’ or a ‘sin bin’ or my favourite, a ‘fuck truck’.
Memories.....
Cheers,
If it's rockin" don't bother knockin"
The best sticker I can remember seeing on the back of a panel van was:
“Don’t laugh, your daughter might be in here”
Mate, North Ryde Drive In was the place to be😃
Mate, I grew up in Dundas, five mins drive from home, but I did go to North Ryde occasionally too.
It often depended on where the girl lived as to which drive-in visited, but mostly Dundas, for obvious reasons.
Cheers,
@@johnnewman366 Yep remember those on many vans
Most blokes around here would respray the Aussie icon in their garage any Saturday afternoon for 2 slabs of beer, a carton of ‘winnie blues and a good feed of fish and chips. Then again 2 slabs of beer plus a carton of smokes and a feed of fish and chips would now cost more than the car.🇦🇺👍
I can remember 5 cents of chips, minimum.😅
@@perpetualgrin5804l remember that well plus when we were kids 20 cents of mixed lollies was massive. Petrol was also almost nothing and you could leave your house unlocked.
@@steven_scattergood I’ve been a painter for over 30 years (now a rep for a big paint company) and I’ve yet to meet any painter that would spend his weekend repainting a car for some cigarettes and chips. Especially after spending 40-50 hours in a panel shop during the week for a very average wage for an Australian tradesman. I used to make $500-$1000 a weekend back in the early 90’s so now I’m guessing most painters would want at least a few grand, and that’s at mates rates.
@@sunsetgarage755 I totally agree but the comment is based on how everything was in the 70s when cars were real metal and driven hard and we worked on it ourselves. I never said anyone was a professional just a weekend back yarder. Mick Molloy a comedian uses this same joke about the rising cost of living and gets a laugh.
@@steven_scattergood Yep the good old day's.
Good times. I had a 1980 WB tradesman van, no windows. 3.3 auto. I changed the tags to HQ, dropped a 350 chev T400 in, painted it matt black with pressure pack cans, put a bull bar on it and took it to about 2 dozen B&S balls.
Actually WB was 80s model, last HZs were early 80 and i even seen a brand new HZ wagon purchased by family friend with blue motor 4.2
From memory it was similar to when Holden went to red motors (EH) from grey (EJ). Towards the very end of the last run of EJ's there were a few that left the factories with red motors. It did say but I forget the reason, probably just ran out of grey engines for the body shells remaining or something.
@@FromTheGong sorry to say but that's been a myth since the 1960s and everyone has a mate who swears that they had an EJ with a factory fitted 149 (red).
The problem with this myth is that no one has ever been able to provide any evidence except for one car, which was a known prototype and fitted not because they ran out of engines - noting also as was and still is common practice, GMH used to build more engines than they needed for immediate production to use as spares, service replace, warranty etc.
The other issue with this is that the EJ front end was different to the EH as the engine mounts between the grey and red motors were completely different, as were the gearbox mounts, so without a lot of production line retooling (plus testing), it would not have been feasible to make these changes so close to end of model, and for so few models - so few that not one has turned up since.
@@astrawally8448 No worries. That's probably where I read it, just through comments or a magazine or something. It may not have even been the EJ I was thinking about but another model. Didn't think about different mounts and gearbox just ignorantly presumed the same without thinking. Was EH first model with bolt on front end instead of full chassis?
Hz officially finished in 79. But it was quite possible to still get is wagon after that for a short time till shells ran out. & having a blue motor fitted would to comply with new emission laws.
Like for when they killed the gt
The just emptied the parts bin into everything they could & it was common to see factory gt bits chucked into regular cars.
@@FromTheGong all old holders from 48/215 to the he have k frames &frint ends can be changed & were to hr front end from disc bakes
Love the ClubLock in the back. Essentially to stop theft.
Club locks promised lots ,delivered nothing, so easy to bend off the wheel, deterent only ,
And here i was thinking the club lock was a weapon because it had the word club in it You learn something every day.
It’s a panel van, not a surf wagon.
& it's a 202 not a 3.3 litre... But... The show is aimed at poms
From someone who never did a surf trip down to Injinup in the 80's😂
It’s a Sharon wagon or fuk truck!
Hey Mike and Elvis. Really great to see you guys here. I loved the first part, looking forward to seeing the end result. Stay safe.I really love what you both do, the dream lives!!, many thanks!
The look on Elvis' face is priceless!!! ... ""its a Herse!!!"
They never made a WB sandman it stops HZ
Not true. My mate owned one. Same colour. 4.2 litre. From the factory in 1982 WB.
@@timhall9731 I thought the Sandman brand stopped with the HZ? They definitely made WB panel vans and utes up until I think 1985 but I thought they were not labelled as "Sandman" post the HZ?
@@MrCarrera28 Sandman, definatly short run, but the WB vans were still made. And now I've reread your post, apologies, you are correct.
@@timhall9731 He owned a fake one as Holden never made a WB sandman panelvan,, they made just normal panelvans.. is a difference between a actual snadman and a normal model in utes and panel vans.
Sandman was ended with the HZ model..
I remember seeing them brand new at a Holden dealership in Melb with Statesman front end...called Caprice Panel van.
That looks to be the 3.3 blue motor used in the VC and VH Commodore. Figures as the WB was made at the same time 1980 - 84.
Absolutely love the Shagin' Wagons. Any old Holden, and Ford for that matter. Hell, I'm even a fan of the P76.. I really hope the boys find one while they're here!
Mike - in the 70s we didn’t call them Surf Wagons - with curtains and a mattress in the back they often had a sign on the back saying
“if the vans rocking don’t come a knocking” 🤫
shagging wagon
Virgin Conversion Unit! is the more accurate description.
"Shaggin' Wagon" - "F*&k Truck" - "Pee Vee" etc...but never "Surf wagons", Maybe it's a USA thing??
Had stickers put on them too. don;t laugh as it could be your daughter inside...
How can you expect a Pom to fully appreciate such a classic nostalgic piece of Aussie motoring history. I think it’s a great buy for the condition it’s in
I had a WB panel van same orange color but with a 253 blue motor, had it for ten years, both my kids were conceived in that car ❤
Isn't finished without a bumper sticker which says....
"If she's rockin'
don't bother knockin'
😆👍
I bloke I knew back in the day had on his van " this van collects fluff don't laugh lady it could be your daughter"
I never got as far as a panel van. Still feel nostalgic though. I had a 1977 Holden Premier HZ station wagon with an electric window in the back. Automatic. No power steering. Awesome old car. Fun.
Love the Valiant Charger in the background when they rock up to see the panel van. My daily driver is a 1965 Chrysler Valiant AP6 made in Australia 🇦🇺
The other iconic aussie panel van was the 1974 ford XB GS...was a mean looking car! Powered by a 302v8 Cleveland that had a 4 barrel email/Carter thermo quad carbie borg Warner 4spd top loader box
The classic Aussie Shag'n wagon, love the Sandman.
I paid $1500 for a second hand HQ panel van in Sydney in late1979.
A bloke I worked with bought a brand new Sandman back in late 1979 or 1980 for around $4600
I guess they've gone up a bit.
Must have. I considered buying a Sandman in the mid 90's. They wanted $9k for it, though it needed some bodywork as it was a daily. Still, being in original condition I could see what I was getting myself into. Shame it only had the 4.2 but I think that's all they came with from memory.
@@2DogsVlogs yea, I think you're right.
My mates one was a metallic green 4.2.
Great engine though, under rated I reckon. I had one in a VH Commodore.
@@paul-57 4.2...was that a 253 cui in the old money?
@@klyvemurray Yes it is. My Sister's mother-in-law had the 253 (4.2) in her HG Premier. I really wanted that car, one owner but she sold it to some young kid for $500. Even in it's sorry state it was worth $3k. She had all the service history from when she bought it in 1970. We had a HQ Premier 4.2 and dad hated it. Complained about fuel economy all the time and sold it after 6 months when it started rusting. It was brand new and Holden wouldn't replace it. He bought a Falcon and always stuck to Ford or Chrysler\Mitsubishi after that.
@@2DogsVlogs
I never understood why local GM and Ford didn't release a V8 until the late 60s, whereas in the US, V8s had been an option since the 1930s in production vehicles.
In 1968 my dad bought a new HK Kingswood with a 5 litre V8...it went like a shower of sh1t and he loved it!! LOL
He didn't give a toss about the fuel economy, he just loved the fact that he no longer had to drive a "bunkie" with smokey motor...
Fun Fact. The Sandman was not a holden model. It was an option pack added to a belmont. Oh yeah! and WB stands for "Why Bother?"
Just came across this video today, love Wheeler Dealers. As for the Sandman, one of my sisters dated a guy with a Holden Sandman panel van, nearly every weekend he was doing something to it. Back was decked out with shag pile carpet and mirror tiles, had heart shape tinted bubble windows on the side, tinted bubble window in the upper tailgate, a massive exhaust pipe running down each side of the car. On a lot of Sunday afternoons I would go with him into Footscray to buy more mirror tiles.
Always dreamt of the ' Drifter ' with that sweet 265 Hemi and 4 speed.😅
It’s not worth $20 k ,,, It’s only the 6 cylinder engine, and it’s been resprayed , for a reason, Save ya money , walk on ! 😂😂😂
They’res probably some bog & rust spots hiding in the sills or rear wheel arches..
Run a magnet around the typical rust areas and see how many times it falls off. Then start taping along the panels with a small flathead screwdriver so no marks are left and you can hear any bog. Heaps duller sort of kinda sound than metal. You'll hear the difference anyway.
20 k any day of the week is a great price
Try buying a 1970 Holden under 20k with no rust these days mate. You know nothing of cars obviously...
ex divvy van maybe .
I had a HQ Belmont panel van. Ex wide load escort vehicles. 253, auto, headers, after market exhaust, twin tanks. 11l per 100km. Loved that van
The Sandman was an iconic panel van of my era,,,a mate bought one in Darwin in 1974 brand new for $4500 it had GTS options and a 308 V8,,,,, such memories,,,
A wb doesn't come close to an original Sandman but is okay,,,it needs a V8 !!
The Rochester Varajet flowed 390 cfm and with some mods worked better than a 350 cfm leaky toilet
white stock van painted black ' a bit strange to paint a big van black but the fire wall was left white (cheaper job) side windows were not popular and undesirable , and a 350 holley is a standard replacement two barrel fellas for any holden six from 149 to 202 as long as you have the two barrel manifold , the different prices between sandman vans and stock WB vans is significant because sandman vans were a GTS Monaro in a van not realized by a lot of people in the early years what you guys have there is a kingswood van
They should've just put a dress on a pig and called it a land rover 😂 I thought experts research the history of why brands were made and why.
@@Mark-Aussie1529 side and rear windows replaced with bubble windows
@@allan1837 its still a pig with make up on it. Who in their right mind will buy a 1980 model WB wanna be Sandman with 202 and bubble windows. Look, I’ll probably get critics about my point of view, but you don't make something to be something its not. If that van was striped of black paint, its probably riddled in putty and patch work.
As Mike first stated $150k plus for a genuine… that's the point. They're are only adding another $2k in value by trying to dress a pig in lipstick.
@@Mark-Aussie1529 might not be a sandman.... but its still a panelvan.....
thats a good enough reason...
@Mark-Aussie1529 20k for a registered van is cheap ,from what I can see in the clip it looks OK, seen worse on gumtree and ebay or fb market place for more
As a 10 year old back in the 70’s I got hit by a Sandman and hospitalised for 3 months. Great to see you guys here in Australia
The 'shaggin-wagon' lives on!
Where did you find TWO panel wagons in black? Most of the footage was of DB-27-SJ. The engine work was done on DI-02-LY. Both cars were originally white.
Rebirthing Brother😷
Is Australia like America, the registration plate changes when you move states , just a thought
@@zerogo40 both nsw plates so there goes that theory
@@zerogo40 No. At the selling dealer and the vinyl wrap it was DB-27-SJ, but the fresh carb went onto DI-02-LY. I presume it was to introduce some sort of fake tension - "will it run better?"
I owned a 3 on the tree 75' HJ Panelvan in the 70's 202 Red motor. It had side pipes extractors, and magnesium wheels( Aunger). I fully decked out the back, did an archway, insulated the roof and walls then covered in sculptured cork tiles and carpet offcuts. I bought it for 3k and sold it for 10k, 5 years later, still wish I owned it today, and would buy one if they were reasonably priced today, not the ridiculous price they are at the moment. Have subbed.
202 6 cyl and wrapping instead of paint. 2 of many reasons this will not sell for anything close to $100K. So much potential wasted
You have to remember these English Gentlemen are descendants from the same dopes that sent us out here for alleged crimes while they stayed back in rainy miserable old blighty.
The car version of a mullet.
It’s a panel van also called a shagin wagon, and yes you root until your dead 😊
You can put whatever stickers you like on it but it will never be a sandman otherwise I’ll put stickers on my mums falcon and call it a GTHO phase IV
Really would be great if you put the full episodes on you tube
Scream fun....
Throw a mattress in the back
And wait🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
These were never called surf wagons in Australia. Panel vans, or nicknamed shaggin wagons and many more i forgot over time...
It’s a no go it’s got windows in the back, they are better with out the windows and it’s 6 cylinder has to be 8 cylinder.
Yes , no real Sandman had windows in the back , it's in fact a different body the Sandman has ridges to support the roof , that can't happen with windows.
Mike, Elvis ... you guys read my mind! Some great Aussie cars for you to save await!
Sandman ??? That's no Sandman. Just an very ordinary WB panelvan. Good workhorse but they rusted too fast.
Replacing the varijet with a holey was a backward step.
Agree should have got a rebuild kit and rebuild it
Where can I watch the full episode?
Thats an insult to the good old sandman van of which I owned X4
Omg. You destroyed it... That holley just blew it.
And made it harder to pass roadworthy with no original anti pollution fitted. Original is more desirable today
The sandman panel van's are really really called sagging wagon's Holden sandman panel van's are 💯 percent legitimate
What’s with Mike saying De-Cal insured of Decal..🤣😂🤣
Elvis you are a champion and gentlemen and you Mike are araggant rude and self-centered
May be a Hearse but it’s cool, 3.3 engine reminds me of the Vauxhall Viscount and Ventora make a cool Surf Wagon, Escort Sundowner would be a good find
The 202ci 3.3 is the baby engine , all real Sandmans had 4.2 V8 or 5.0 V8 and 4 speed manuals . In Australia Ford had a Sundowner in the same style as this but using the Falcon body , it came in 4.1 straight six ( the baby engine) or 5.0 or 5.8 Litre V8, Chrysler Australia also had the Drifter in 265ci / 4.3 litre straight Hemi Six ( baby engine) or 5.2 or 5.9 V8.
@@JosephCowen-fz8vj 396 or 454 would be a nice engine swap with a 4 or 5 speed or a turbo 350 tranny
The ford vans had either four point nine liter which was 302 cubic inch or five point oneewhich was 351 cubic inch.fz8vj
@@JoshuaRoberts-kq9cs 302 is 5.0 litre , only was badged 4.9 for few years all other times 5.0 litre , the Holden 304 was badged 4.9 and later 5.0 litre and for the record 351 ci is 5.8 litres.
The WB front end. Hmmm. I think the HZ with the twin headlights looks a lot better....
its 20 k because its a 6 cylinder wb, a sandman was completely different animal
Holley and fuel efficiency Hahahahahahahahahah
Where can I find a van like that for 20K. What a bargain!
For sure a bargin

Why are these videos not a full video, where do you see the entire thing
That's not a sandman, it needs a 308 4 speed
Agreed with everyone else…it is a panel van.
Wow, hotted up six cylinder panel van.....😂😂😂😂
Really liked the episode, but if they said it definitely the same car, then why was the registration plate different from the black one ? When they bought it, the registration was different, reg was DB-27-SJ, then went was turned orange the registration is DI-02-LY, seems odd
They think people are too stupid to notice
i know people here in wa that put new plates on the car to make it look better when they sell it. i got new plates for one of my cars so the coppers might have thought it had just had a roadworthy inspection done.
I think a 70s Surf style would be more popular, but I'm wondering what you could do with the gloss black, get some air brushing theme painting, Munsters, Rock cowboy etc.
That'll look fantastic as soon as it left out in the weather a few times and paint bubbles under the plastic wrapper.
It’s not a hearse, it’s a f@ck truck!!!

It was better with a 5.0 ltr ( 308 ci) V8.
Even better with an aftermarket

its a wb panel van .leave it original. dont destroy it .
350cfm holly, disconnect the Vac advance, the WB jade electronic ignition just advance it.
It's a 202 holden, carrying on about the cooling system is hilarious, any true aussie know a 202 is the nosy reliable engine in the world. Dragged plenty out of the bush and put soke fuel down the pots and fired up after decades of sitting
The only show I watched on cable that I can't get via antenna--since I cut the cord. Miss WD
I had a 5lit HX Sandman 4speed in the 80s it went like a rocket but could have done with a 5th gear. It was metallic blue with GTS dash and black factory int. After I got married I traded it in and got a 5lt HZ Statesman Caprice white with white vinyl roof and chrome spoke wheels. It looked like Malcomb Frazer the prime ministers car. I had a drunk bloke throw a empty stubby at the car, he though I was him.
Ha ha ha. They just drove past my son’s home in Rydalmere.
It's a bloody panel van not a "surf wagon"
I think you guys need to do a 1974 Ford Granada Ghia ... its a beautiful classic (not the American Granada)
In green would be epic
Anybody else wondering if they put a bid on the blue charger in the car warehouse background?
It's funny as every panel van i remember when i was young was always a v8 although my mates mum had a xb or xc which had a 6 cylinder.
Reminds me of Ford Seabring red / Vista/Phoenix Orange
It just isn't right with the windows... and that square front end is ugly af!
Tell that gumpy the back was for rooting in!
Why did the Sandman have two different registrations or did you do two vans?
Throw on a set of roof racks & some Sandman stickers or a vinyl decal like the one on Max's panelvan in "Mad Max" & you have a surf van.
Did Elvis say it was a V8. Looks like a Straight 6 to me.
Yes it’s a 202 motor
Yes the Baby motor , should be 5.0 litre V8 like all the rest
