Such great videos I've now completed all 3 oil changes on my 2019 M8 SGS, after watching your videos it gave me the confidence to have a go by following your instructions to the T, when I purchased my SGS back in 2019 I was lucky that I found out following a bike trip to France that it was transferring fluid from the transmission to the primary, I was horrified to find that only 3 weeks after purchase I had near to nothing of fluid in the transmission I took it back to Harley where they installed a vent tube in the primary, they said they knew of the problem but was doing any call backs, and only doing the work when asked, But what I really want to say is thank you because watching your videos and copying your instructions on all the oil changes I have saved money but more important to me it has given me a sense of pride and confidence that I can do it myself
Thank you so much for your kind and generous feedback Ricky, I'm aware of that problem, and not surprised that Harley aren't making it a recall, only dealing with issues that arise under warranty.. same as many other design problems they have glossed over in the past.. Great to hear that you're taking a pride in your bike and enjoying that wider pride of ownership that swinging your own spanners brings.. Good luck with it and ride safe... Del.
"Phwoar Gear oil" isn't what i said when i took a sniff of it.... But then again, i guess standing in the garage sniffing oil is perv on any day of the week aye brother.. lol! :-) PeazNloaf buddy.!
Another great “user friendly “ demonstration. Thankfully, my Softail is almost as easy as your bike. You do nice careful work. If money ever gets tight, you could always do oil changes for people. I’m sure you’d get great take-up because everyone would know firstly the job was done; and secondly it was done right.😉
Morning from down under mate, I’m enjoying the videos mate. Every now and then a previous project turns up. The dart scribe!! I’m glad you’re not using the engine oil for all three holes. The gear shift is so much better with gear oil.
Thanks mate, appreciate you noticing... I love my dart scribe, it's on it's third tip now so I better sharpen the old ones so I can keep changing them! And yes indeed, when I swopped from a single oil over to the three separate Amsoil products a year or so ago, I'll never go back to that, gearbox is so much smoother!
I’ve always done the oil on my bikes every years even with lock down when I only done 460 miles between mots I’ve always said oil is cheaper than the engine/ gear box Hope your ok buddy are you back on the buses sorry butler coaches 😂🤘
Del, I love when you do these simple, well explained tips on DYI bike care. Thanks so much! I always find the dip stick for the gear box so hard to read with fresh oil. Such a small gap between fill and full. Pete 🇨🇦
Hey Pete, thanks for your kind words and yeah, i have to agree, what's the use of a chrome dip stick, it's almost impossible to see the oil on it, and when it's hot, the oil runs off the end giving a false reading.. Still, we love them with all their faults aye..
When I had my beama I would use lucus and not bmw gear oil. I really liked it with it being a bit thicker as the seals in that old girl would weep mainly around the clutch actuation arm. My mum didn't like oil on her path 😂

Followed your guides, spot on... however when doing the transmission, put in 28 and it didnt register on the stick. Added a bit more and it was ok. Do you check it on the stand or upright / level? Concerned with too much in there.
Check your manual Chris because different models vary... this bike was check upright, but some are on the jiffy stand, so be sure you get the right spec... a manual is always worth the investment.
Good evening Sir Well that was pretty straight forward. When checking your engine oil , do you screw your dip stick in all the way or just rest it on top to check your oil level , could give me a shout out tomorrow on this matter , thanking you Andy. Excellent video Sir
My gear shifter levers went all tight and stiff this week , it had me worried about the gearbox seizing..Turned out to be the clutch cable just needed adjusting... Happy days :) Enjoyed the video..Cheers
instructive as usual. hey got a question though - i notice you wear gloves alot doing stuff. how are they. cumbersome? i have never used gloves so curious. thanks
Hey Robert, no problem with the gloves, they're not thick, just thin rubber like the tattooist wears, you can feel everything you need to, and when working with oils it helps keep your skin healthy long term. Like you, i never used to, but after a few decades at it, i do now!
I know I might have mentioned it prior but everyone should be careful with 3/8” drive torque wrenches. Some, dare I say most, of the ones I’ve seen and used only go down to 20ft-lbs and as a result I use a 1/4” drive on anything under 20. I also learned that the owners manual also cautions that the audible click is harder to hear at low settings and this is how I broke a cam cap bolt off in my engine 2 years ago.
Sure like your new ramp!! Just what I need!! But wifie …. Says 😏…. Anyways…. Like in total agreement with you… easy change and ready for spring ride!! I do mine during winter!! In nice warm garage!!
Thanks mate, absolutely love this oil, transforms the bike, specially if it's a little overdue for an oil change, specially the gearbox, so much smoother through the gears and especially that first engagement in the morning. Take care and have a great week, D&Px
Love your work mate . I just bought a new lowrider , what was the viscosity you used of the gearbox oil ? I've seen many utube videos where they say syn - 3 20w50 all holes , 80-140 full syn for gearbox , even owners swearing by 15w40 diesel oil in all holes ? I wish you were in my area , so you could service my bikes , Take care .
Thanks for your kind words buddy, i appreciate that.. I used to put Syn-3 in all three holes, and it works ok, but i noticed a big reduction in noise and harshness from the gearbox when i used a dedicated gear oil.. doesn't really matter which one, the Harley dedicated one is ok, or Amsoil gear oil they're both real thick and made a big improvement.. gear selection is quieter and smoother, specially first from nuetral, and upchages are slick and silent... otherwise, a good synthetic 20W/50 on the other two is fine.
Nice video, easy to follow. These new red side covers are a great help for huge Harleys (or Wings). Wintertime is perfect for getting our vehicles in the best shape for the start of the new season. Spannering also helps us over the winter. All the best, Günter from Nürnberg/Germany
Hi, First, thanks for this great video. What is the allen key size for the transmission dip stick? I can't find the size in my tools, either in the service manual. Thanks
Thank you Del, another great video. M8 engines are notorious for transferring fluid from the transmission to the primary. It generally doesn't create that much of a problem but you may wish to measure how much fluid drains from the transmission the next time you do this service. If it is less than what you put in it has migrated to the primary. If you check the transmission oil level in about 2000 miles, I suspect you may find the level low.
Thanks buddy, I will do that, the secondary check is of course the primary level itself, and luckily when I changed it it was correct and so was the gearbox here, so no migration at this point (10k miles), but I will certainly keep an eye on it, I check my oil levels routinely anyway!
@@Moonfleet41 mine transferred (hydro clutch model M8) installed greg williams fat push rod to slow it down but also needed the thicker 85W140 oil to stop it happening.
@@JulianJohnstone Yeah i hear that a lot... that the thicker the gear oil the less (if at all) it happens.. perhaps for those who use "same oil in all three holes" would experience it more !!! after all, 20W/50 is never really up to the job in the first place aye.!

Hi Gary, I used to be the same way using the Syn3 in all three holes, and the primary isn't really important, in fact engine oil is perfectly good for it and hell I've even used ATF in primary's and it's fine... but as for the gearbox, just as an experiment, try a proper thick gear oil in your next change and let me know what you think! I reckon you'll be quite surprised how it softens up the shifts no end! Enjoy your week mate and keep safe.
