CROCHET: Comfort Mat for Pet Rescue Centers

- This super easy crochet pattern for a Comfort Mat for Pet Rescue Centers is a wonderful project to make because it provides comfort for animals in a stressful situation and is a great stash buster! This mat is 12' x 18", but check out your local rescue centers to see what sizes they need! The pattern is easy to adjust.
ALSO.... many people are commenting and are concerned about pets' claws getting caught in the crochet work. Again, I say, contact your local shelter and see what (or if) they want for mats, pads, and blankets. Here is a video of a 99-year-old woman who has been making these for years: • 99-year-old crochet en...

Many people are concerned about claws getting caught in the crochet work. Check with your local shelter to see what (or if) they want for crocheted items. I donate to three different shelters and none of them express this concern, nor does this 99-year-old woman who has been making these for years: ruclips.net/video/LMZcp736sbM/видео.html
I would be surprised if a claw got stuck in this thickness and tight stitch. I could see it happening if the stitch was very loose, but this tight it should not be a problem.
@@annep.1905 Yes, good point.
I think this is a great idea!! I have a friend who has 5 cats. They were given to her when a previous owner couldn't keep them. Everyone knows she doesn't have it in her to turn one away. She has turned them all into house cats that don't go out. They sleep on her crocheted afghans all the time without getting their nails caught.
Exactly! Cats love crochet!!! I find the most common complaint with fellow crocheters who own cats is that they can't keep them off their crochet projects....
My cats are always laying on my crochet blankets and work 😂
@@sarahscreativecreations1271 they do love crochet work for sure!
Terrific way to get busy for anyone feeling lost for want of being productive. Thank you for such a lovely idea especially for sharing your tutorial. 💖🌺🌹💐🎀
You are so welcome!
Fantastic idea!!!
Will swing by my local shelter and see if they will accept them .
Wonderful!
I am a member of our local shelter's knitting/crocheting "Knittin' for Kittens" group. We meet once a month at the shelter to bring in our completed "knits," pick up donated yarn, share info. and socialize. We either knit or crochet -- all is accepted. We work from established patterns, but also freestyle to be creative. Currently, our shelter needs more round beds, so those who crochet are working on that. We also crochet stuffed yarn toys (no catnip), and crochet over wine corks to make toys. One member specializes in making items for the annual fundraising auction. I would encourage anybody to contact their local shelter and see if they have such a crafting group, or ask permission to start one. We mostly work with the yarn that is donated, or purchased through the shelter's Amazon wish list, so there is very little out-of-pocket expense for us to make these "knits." I saw your video on using the magic knot to connect yarn strands, and I'll be trying that. Thanks!
You are most welcome! And thank you for sharing your experience and advice for shelter offerings. I'm going to see if our local shelters are looking for toys...that would be great fun!
This is a great idea. They remind me of rag rugs, which I have several of, and love. Can’t wait to get started on some for our shelters, and my babies. Thank you!
Yes, the multiple strands of yarn give it that "rug texture", so using a strip of fabric, instead of yarn, would work as well!
Oh thank you so much for this pattern! Your instructions are very clear. I would not have thought to do the first row through the bumps or known how to fix a dropped loop in that way. I watched your magic knot video, too, which is brilliant! I knit and crochet mittens for charity and end up with a lot of leftover scrap yarn. Now I know what to do with it! I'll check with my local pet shelters to see what they need.
Wonderful and you are most welcome! It's always great to use up those scraps!
What a wonderful idea. I too have rescue cats. 3 littermate brothers. I will be making these and too will be calling the local shelter I purchased them thru to offer donations. Beautiful idea. Thanks for sharing.
You are most welcome!
This is a wonderful idea! I am going to share this with the ladies at my seniors center. Thank you dear
You are so welcome!
What an amazing idea. I used the same technique and attached non skid stuff to make throw rugs but I like the idea of donating to rescue shelters much much more.
Glad it was helpful!
I just found your channel. I love this idea! My kitties are rescues, spoiled, and loved as much as my sons. 🤭 This will be perfect for them. I will also call our local shelter about these too.
Wonderful!
Loved this Crochet technique and I love the thickness of it too cause it looks much more steadier for the cats and kittens too and their nails not getting into the yarn with the tightness of the pattern. I appreciate you doing things for cats and kittens at Rescues cause they always can use bed pads and also blankets too. God bless and I’ll be checking out more of your videos. Sue M. Thanks so much!
@@createandcrochetwithpatricia you’re very welcome🥰😺❤️
Love the tips about weaving in the loose loop! Looks like a LOT of fun
I've made several mats and I've had a couple of missed at least one loop in every one! They are so easy to miss...
I think this is a wonderful idea to show a little love and kindness to the cats and dogs in the shelters. I will be contacting my local shelter to ask if they will accept these donations.
And Patricia, what a pleasant surprise to see one of your videos. I thought your channel was no longer active due to personal reasons. So glad to see you are doing well. God bless 😊
Thank you so much! It seems YT will cease monetizing my channel if I don't continue to create content. As this is my only source of income, I will add the occasional video.
Great idea to get rid of that scrap yarn and it has a great purpose!
For sure...couldn't agree more!
I love this easy but absolutely darling pattern for pets. I will be including this with the donations I make for the local shelters and affordable vets. I am so happy to have found your channel. Tysm for sharing. I will be looking at more of your videos as I also make donations every year at Easter & Christmas for my church for the kids' gift baskets. God Bless. Happy Easter Everyone! Love, Peace, and Prayers to all! 💙☮🙏
You are most welcome and welcome here! I have some fun ideas for kids gifts!

Hi I'm a new subscriber who has just recently returned to crochet after some years so I'm starting off with easy projects while I get back into the swing of crochet. This is a simple , useful and thoughtful project. Thanks for the calm, clear tutorial.
You are most welcome! I have a lot of tutorials that are suited for beginners, so make sure to check out my playlists. Enjoy!
I have made carrier blankets for a pet rescue for cats it helps to use up scrap yarn
Wonderful! It's such a great way to use up yarn... 👍👌
Very good idea. Thanks from UK
You’re welcome 😊 I love the UK!
Thank you for this.
I’m on my fourth cat mat which I donate to the shelter where I adopted two kittens, and I’m using up those small balls of leftover yarn😊
Wonderful!
Check out volunteer work for donating these crochet blankies at “comfort for critters”!🐈⬛🐈🐾🐾🐾
Wonderful... great tip!
I'm thrilled this video popped up, I just subscribed and shared it on pinterest. I hope that helps your channel.❤
My dear dog Lola passed away February 29th. Obviously I'm heartbroken. I think doing this will make me feel better, I know I cannot adopt a dog now I'm just too sad.
I don't believe I'll ever get another dog.
Thank you again❤
I'm early in the video so I don't know if you speak about the different sizes and which ones the rescues might prefer.
I just clicked on your blog and saw that you do Dot painting. I did that a few years ago on and off. Nothing Grand but I've been thinking about doing that again. I've been doing a lot of zentangle when I'm not crocheting.
Being creative has always been a part of me and it's always made me feel happy and also gives a great sense of accomplishment. ❤
I'm not very tech-savvy, I'm only 56 but I don't do social media except youtube. So I really don't know blogs and things like that.
I will check your blog out more in the dot painting. Can't wait.
I'm so sorry for your loss...it is so heartbreaking for sure. 🙏😢 Thank you! I do have a Pinterest page where I share links to my content, but I haven't added this one yet. I do mention at the end of the video about checking with local shelters to see what they need.
Wonderful! I used to do a variety of crafts, but I've had to concentrate on the crochet only because my poor brain couldn't deal with the complexity of different projects. I do have a playlist for dot painting here: ruclips.net/p/PLVxSmwID02OAg7sEDAvFxDQ2p0JUT1J_k
Enjoy!
This is a wonderful idea. Do you recommend natural fibers or acrylic? Personally I’m thinking acrylic would be the easiest to maintain and not shrink in the dryer, but then it would be hot in the summer.
I am using acrylic because that's what I have on hand. You do make good points about fiber care, so I think that would be a personal call. I don't think heat would be an issue because they will be laying on top of the mats with lots are circulation around them. Perhaps in a very hot climate, cotton would be the better choice...
I think I would use strips of denim also.
That would be a great idea... or old sheets...
Perfect for washable laying pads for our chicken, too. Two solids, and a variegated. Time to bring out the "chunky boi" hook. It could make a decent dish-drying pad. (All in cotton, btw). There is so very much free yarn lying around this little town. Sourcing is not an issue right now. Perhaps the local animal hospital could use some?
I would have never thought of laying pads for chickens! What a great idea... and the drying pad! I got the idea to make place mats and a hot pad as well. There are so many possibilities. I know some animal hospitals like comfort blankets to wrap the animals up in after they've come out of surgery... thanks for sharing!
Interesting; I’ve never worked in the back bump.
It is such a great technique! It makes the first row look like the last row by leaving both the front and back loops showing.
Love this! What about for dogs?! How many chains and how many rows for a doggie matt? Would love to make them and donate to my shelter in my town. ❤❤
Contact your local shelter and ask them what sizes they need. Then simply make the foundation chain a bit longer and add more rows until you get the desired size! This stitch pattern tends to stretch out a bit, so you want to make the fc a little shorter than the finished width. See 4:00 in the video, I give more detail about this...
I have been making this very similar thing for over 25 years. All the yarn I use is donated. I have made over 10,000 blankets. And all my local animal shelters love them. All cats that are adopted take their blanket home with them! It's Nice to see when I go to my vets office and I see a blanket ive made in a carrier. All random acts of kindness. This is a great way to volunteer and use your scraps and skills!
@@trinakendall8857 Wow!!!! That is a lot of love!!! Thank you for sharing and thank you for all your giving over the years... you have provided endless love and comfort to cats in need. 🥰😇🥰
I made a pad for my rescue cat and he loves it, I’ve also made some for myself. Great way to use up some of leftover yarn 😊
@@MrMuggins11 Wonderful!
do you do blankets in SC only..I love sc and I loved this video.
I don't have a tutorial for a blanket using the sc, but you could use this pattern with a single strand of yarn, then make the foundation chain as wide as you want the blanket. Just keep crocheting rows of sc until you have the desired height!
What is the reason for working in the back loop for the first row?
This leaves the front loop and back (or top) loop free for the first row so it looks the same as the finishing row. Each end of your work will have the "V" part of the stitch showing.
No need to reply…I found your answer in another comment! 😊
Can you tell me how to do fine the magic knot video
Open the description box below the video (click on "...more" and click on the link that says "Blog post with written pattern and links" (something like that). All the into is there!
Refer to back of stitch as "spine of stitch"
Wonderful...I love it! I was taught back bump, but spine is so much better!!! Thank you
❤❤❤rell me more
enjoy!
I had done some like this & asked my vets' office about donating them. They told me shelters didn't want them because nails could get caught in the fibers. Did your's say anything about that?
No, we have 3 cat shelters that gladly take these mats. They want them to fit in the carrying cases and request them to be 12" x 18" and 12" x 24". If you have pets, and you crochet, you may have noticed how much they love to cuddle up to your crochet work. I would contact the shelters directly and ask them...the person at the vet may have had an opinion rather than actual knowledge.
That was the first thing that came to my mind also, a stray animal could have a split nail also that could create a problem
@@carolstinson7157 That is why it is best to check directly with the shelters and see if or what they need. If the shelters are asking for these mats, they won't have an issue with them.
I have TONS of scrap yarn cause who returns the yarn if you buy too many for a project 🤣😂
So this is a GREAT way to use it up! My daughter in law helps with rescue’ thinks it’s a wonderful idea‼️❤️👍
@@joelfaithmcdonald1734 for sure!!
Don’t you have to worry about the cats or dogs claws getting caught in the mat?
Check with your local shelter to see what (or if) they want crocheted items. Here is a woman who has been making these mats for years...
ruclips.net/video/LMZcp736sbM/видео.html
Guess i’d have to watch this again, I thought you were going through 3 and then you said 6 strands
Each "loop" is 3 strands... so when you go through 2 loops, you are going under a total of 6 strands. 👍🙌👌
@@createandcrochetwithpatricia thanks for the reply, once i’m doing it’ll probably make sense…i miss crochet…haven’t crocheted in a long time. I remember it being so relaxing….
what a wonderful idea for shelters, we adopted our 2 year old dog from the humane shelter…so important to make these animals comfortable while they wait for their forever home!
@@Kate98755 I couldn't agree more! I hope you enjoy crocheting again... it is so relaxing indeed :)
