the big irrepressible Brendan we all love . Sad ,solemn notes and crates of newly drawn stout ;The usual symptoms when a life goes out .But the extinction this means 7 times the most ,The music held no echo ,and tears drowned out our toast .Sorrow and bereavement , life has no meaning now.Silence is master; laughter and song bowed ;For gone went our great Captain ! ,To some more hospitable inn.Where Kant and hypocrisy ,Can no longer embarrass him !.
So happy to discover this song. I had vague memories of hearing it in a theatre as a young child but no idea what play or what it was about. Now I know. I did know I had seen The Hostage but was very young, probably too young! Wonderful song!
My Father, a Dublin man (Finglas born) earlier today said I should search for and read/listen to this. I made the point of first reading Kipling's 'Recessional' before I did. I then read the words of Behan's The Captain And The Kings. I fully understand almost every word of Behan's. I cannot say the same of Kipling. And I am an Irishman, raised in England. Slainte for the share, BanjoDano.
The Irish have no reason at all to envy the English. Wasn't it Behan himself who wrote of "the Irish people who had had a language, history and culture for a thousand years before the woad painted barbarian Briton had learned to walk upright". This song was the "Eton Rifles" of its' day.
Brilliant. Genius.

The Dubliners do a stunning version of this song on their album, "Revolution". Very powerful lyrics.
