For someone who writes such deep raps with integral stories, it shows the man's talent that he can compose something so simple yet meaningful.

I think I got the message of this song when I first heard it as a child at age 12. I grew up to be a high school teacher. This is as a refugee immigrant out of Eritrea, Africa. Thank you Nas
Wow, this literally brought a tear to my eye, this music started for the messages but has been terrible lost because of the machine that took control, as usual
This is when hip hop was great. Had a positive message. You don't have to be poor, or a criminal, just because you come from humble or poor beginnings. You can do anything you want with hard work. 💪👍
@@1Flyingfist lol 😂 For real old school hip hop was like that, nothing unusual here. Only gangsta rap and mainstream rap changed this, and still some like Tupac wrote great lyrics

Nas gave wisdom and clarity to endless generations through this masterpiece. As a grown man approaching 40, this song has and will always be like a wake up call for me to strive for that which is meaningful and has substance.....
It depends on what mood you want to feel while listening. This song is very motivational and hype, the lyrics are very well put together as well. I think that some songs have poor meanings for children, but at the end of the day if it is catchy the lyrics don’t matter to me as much.
@@Wis_Dom yeah might be in the grand scheme of things. At least here in Germany we are very aware of this kind of stuff I don't think I have to explain to you why. I know damn well what my country has done in the past. From the Herero and Nama genocide in 1904 in German West Africa to the biggest crime against humanity ever, the Holocaust. And yet there is so much more to our history. There's a reason why patriotism is very uncomfortable for us today.
My God, what a genius Nas was/is. A story, a history lesson, and a PSA mixed into a track with a great beat which also pays homage to a titan of classical music by sampling Für Elise. As a history buff, I’m going to do a bit of rabbit-holing into the African libraries and resulting education of Greeks and Romans by Africans. Not saying I deny it or even doubt it one bit. But as with any new information regarding classical antiquity that passes my eyes or ears, further research is warranted. And it’s a terrific excuse to put off my actual tasks needing completion!

Pretty much what I said in another convo What people view and choose to consume as media will always reflect what's coming next. If you do really appreciate rap with intelligent lyrics and you are truly tired of those with small to no content in their chants simply stop consuming their product. They will collapse of their own. And that doesn't go only for music. It goes for all. Money is power, use your power (give power) sparingly and only to those you truly feel deserve it. Because they will use it the way THEY see fit. And when it comes to music, well Migos will produce more Migos album with more money/views people give him....

Im 33 years old we song this in my 6th grade graduation, i really haven't listened to this song since I was 11-12 years old . To hear it now with adult ears resonates so much deeper. Thank you Nas this song still reaches and teaches ❤
I heard this song back in middle school when I had just migrated to the U.S. with my family and I didn't understand the lyrics. I only understood the chorus. I remember thinking it was a powerful song. As an adult, it brings tears to my eyes. I am now a successful lawyer living in NYC. I almost didn't graduate high school. YOU CAN DO ANYTHING KIDS. Never let anyone tell you different.
I immigrated to this country too when I was 10. Though this country is racist as hell there is no equality. People discriminate hard, I used to work for Fortune 500 company, and it was super hard to climb up the ladder because of who you are and how you look and where you are from. I was smart and very productive but it works against you because of where you are from, and how you look, the managers always find ways to mess with you. If anything America is and always will be RACIST.
I'm a first-year college student, and I'm also an immigrant who struggled with English when coming here. It's my dream to become a lawyer in NYC. Thank you for sharing, it's very inspiring, I'll become a lawyer in NYC myself someday. "If I work hard at it, i'll be where I wanna be"
lmao its the 80% dumbasses listening out there. if it sold best industry would push nothing else. thinking is hard and painful for them so they rather hear about tiddies ;)
The last verse gives me goosebumps no matter how many times I listen to it. And it's incredible to know that all he tells about is true. Such a masterpiece, this song deserves all the accolades.
Alexander didn’t do anything to Sphinx noses, and the idea is based on a myth that Napoleon did so, which he didn’t do either, it was much more likely to be other pharaohs such as Akhenaten, who declared himself a God and dismissed his predecessors, the Persians didn’t rob Egypt and steal everything either, they only controlled Egypt for 150 years, and suggesting that Africa was empty from the Hellenistic period onwards is not correct, Nas is dismissive of Rome, Islam and the ottomans in Africa, and jumps to slavery which was in a different area of Africa, west and south instead of north where Egypt is, so it’s quite problematic as a history lesson, but I’ve always loved nas and the attempt by him to make a good song with a real pointed lesson and it’s a shame that songs such as this barely make an impact yet generic and crass songs blow up and are remembered worldwide
What's up fellow old millennial. 35 y/o here. I somehow happened upon this song after probably a decade. I wish this song was blasting from people's car's.

You are correct
My God, what a genius Nas was/is.
A story, a history lesson, and a PSA mixed into a track with a great beat which also pays homage to a titan of classical music by sampling Für Elise.
As a history buff, I’m going to do a bit of rabbit-holing into the African libraries and resulting education of Greeks and Romans by Africans.
Not saying I deny it or even doubt it one bit. But as with any new information regarding classical antiquity that passes my eyes or ears, further research is warranted. And it’s a terrific excuse to put off my actual tasks needing completion!
Lyrics:
I know I can
Be what I wanna be
If I work hard at it
I'll be where I wanna be
I know I can (I know I can)
Be what I wanna be (Be what I wanna be)
If I work hard at it (If I work hard at it)
I'll be where I wanna be (I'll be where I wanna be)
Be, b-boys and girls, listen up
You can be anything in the world, in God we trust
An architect, doctor, maybe an actress
But nothing comes easy, it takes much practice
Like, I met a woman who's becoming a star
She was very beautiful, leaving people in awe
Singing songs, Lena Horne, but the younger version
Hung with the wrong person, got her strung on that heroin
Cocaine, sniffing up drugs, all in her nose
Could've died, so young, now looks ugly and old
No fun 'cause now when she reaches for hugs, people hold their breath
'Cause she smells of corrosion and death
Watch the company you keep and the crowd you bring
'Cause they came to do drugs and you came to sing
So if you gonna be the best, I'ma tell you how
Put your hands in the air, and take the vow
I know I can (I know I can)
Be what I wanna be (Be what I wanna be)
If I work hard at it (If I work hard at it)
I'll be where I wanna be (I'll be where I wanna be)
I know I can (I know I can)
Be what I wanna be (Be what I wanna be)
If I work hard at it (If I work hard at it)
I'll be where I wanna be (I'll be where I wanna be)
Be, b-boys and girls, listen again
This is for grown-looking girls who's only 10
The ones who watch videos and do what they see
As cute as can be, up in the club with fake ID
Careful, 'fore you meet a man with HIV
You can host the TV like Oprah Winfrey
Whatever you decide, be careful, some men be
Rapists, so act your age, don't pretend to be
Older than you are, give yourself time to grow
You thinking he can give you wealth, but so
Young boys, you can use a lot of help, you know
You thinking life's all about smoking weed and ice
You don't wanna be my age and can't read and write
Begging different women for a place to sleep at night
Smart boys turn to men and do whatever they wish
If you believe you can achieve, then say it like this
I know I can (I know I can)
Be what I wanna be (Be what I wanna be)
If I work hard at it (If I work hard at it)
I'll be where I wanna be (I'll be where I wanna be) (Now, go)
I know I can (I know I can)
Be what I wanna be (Be what I wanna be)
If I work hard at it (If I work hard at it)
I'll be where I wanna be (I'll be where I wanna be)
Be, be-fore we came to this country
We were kings and queens, never porch monkeys
There was empires in Africa called Kush
Timbuktu, where every race came to get books
To learn from black teachers who taught Greeks and Romans
Asian Arabs and gave them gold, when
Gold was converted to money it all changed
Money then became empowerment for Europeans
The Persian military invaded
They heard about the gold, the teachings, and everything sacred
Africa was almost robbed naked
Slavery was money, so they began making slave ships
Egypt was the place that Alexander the Great went
He was so shocked at the mountains with black faces
Shot up they nose to impose what basically
Still goes on today, you see?
If the truth is told, the youth can grow
They learn to survive until they gain control
Nobody says you have to be gangstas, hoes
Read more, learn more, change the globe
Ghetto children, do your thing
Hold your head up, little man, you're a king
Young princess when you get your wedding ring
Your man is saying "She's my Queen"
I know I can (I know I can)
Be what I wanna be (Be what I wanna be)
If I work hard at it (If I work hard at it)
I'll be where I wanna be (I'll be where I wanna be)
I know I can (I know I can)
Be what I wanna be (Be what I wanna be)
If I work hard at it (If I work hard at it)
I'll be where I wanna be (I'll be where I wanna be)

Remember when rappers used to tell stories and not just rap about how much they have
Pretty much what I said in another convo What people view and choose to consume as media will always reflect what's coming next.

This right here.
