At last, a new video from the sad dads I can base my personality upon
I hear you.
US
My husband’s coworker told him “ I don’t get the National.” My hubby told him “when you become a dad and are middle age, you will.” We’ve had the good fortune to see them live a few times.
I am a 33 year old, married, non-dad. I have loved the nationals melancholy since I was 19. I won't go back. I don't know anything else
petition to legally change the name “The National” to “The Sad Dads”
I can't stop playing Tropic Morning News on repeat. Can't wait for the new album.
Me too! I heard it first live in Manchester and it's been on repeat since. I just want to see what they do with the studio version now.
The lyrics "I would love to have nothing to with you / I would like to move on and be through it" really stood out to me when I saw them in Kansas City.
Same!! I also heard it first live several months ago at Ottawa's Bluesfest. At first it was tough finding the new song on youtube, now its everywhere. I love it!
I still can't stop playing Tropic Morning News on repeat.
@@ben85davis One more day until we get the album version!
Matt always seems to be standing around on stage like he's bored and waiting for the bus. But somehow it works for him. Great set. can't wait for the new album.
Except for when he's yelling, or taking a stroll through the audience. Also the (not-so)odd occasion that he walks too close to the speakers creating feedback and has to crouch or crawl to try and avoid it when passing back again lol
he drinks heavily before playing as he gets very anxious
I have been listening to music since the late 50's , and have seen well over 1000 gigs (2000 bands with supports) .
The National are one of the greatest bands of any era . But there are many great contemporary artists eg LP, Low , London Grammar, Wolf Alice etc.
Completely agree, their joyous to see live, Matt is captivating. I've seen them in a large outdoor crowd & intimate setting & always been brilliant. Such a great back catalog of music. Thank god I picked up Alligator in the early 2000's by chance ever since they've kept delivering classic after classic 🙌🙌
@@aidanlyons9530 Yes and have you heard the pre first album ep's ?
They played one of those tracks at the live gig in Manchester Two weeks ago today.
Absolutely brilliant performance. Played for nearly Two hours and just killer track after killer track.
Matt was absolutely fired up eg see the tracks uploaded onto YT = National Manchester Mayfield, August 27 "the system only dreams in total darkness"
They played two new tracks. Both excellent. But much more muscular loud and rocky than the last album. Which one detractor has called "too sugary" . But I like sugar personally.!
We r in a fun music period
@@joygimbel7760 very much so
Wolf Alice are fucking amazing, gotta see them live
Still the most consistently good modern indie rock band
no dude, machine gun kelly is more consistent
@@EclecticoIconoclasta 🤣
Spoon say hi
@@EclecticoIconoclasta Tell it how it is
@@JoshLuke864 he is consistently bad
this was a phenomenal performance. phenomenal. the national will forever be a soundtrack to my life in new york. fucking brilliant.
I saw them last night in Manchester .Been gig going for 50 years and seen well over 1000 gigs (1500 plus bands) . They were on fire and a brilliant near two hour set. Honestly believe even better than this superb performance.
The National are now easily mu current No 1 band , and are in my all time top 10. . Along with the Beatles, Wall of Voodoo, Dead Can Dance, Velvet Underground, Fleetwood Mac, Joy Division, ,Low, REM , Led Zeppelin
How can you say that when Matt's voice was gone fron the 1st minute? Jesus Christ, listen to Grace or to The System Only Dreams, for example: he can bearely sing... Sadly, one of the worst of their performances.
The best band in the world is back and they sound absolutely amazing can’t wait for the new album, amazing show!!!!!
The NTL. is like a fine wine that Matt drinks out of a coffee pot on stage before the encore. Much better with age and gets everyone more into it.
For me, the national is the best band ever. all the songs can be enjoyed. His music performances are always amazing. If anyone asks, the fun part is staying silent in life, I won't hesitate to answer watching the National concert, even if it's from RUclips. maybe I love the National the most in Indonesia. and lastly, the song about today closed this concert well. very calming
Felicissimo di non aver dato retta alle due bellissime sirene spagnole amiche di un amico ed essermi totalmente immerso nelle vibes di questo incredibile concerto, il giorno 4 giugno 2022
Such a masterpiece of setlist! love them!
What a great set list. The National always delivers 🙏
This set list is incredible!
My favourite band by far. Amazing concert in Pamplona, too.
listened to tropic morning news for about 30 times in a row. still could hear it for another 50 times ...... brilliant again for those who get touched by their music ...
Was looking in the comments for the set list /time stamp links; only just realised they're right there in the description... You're doing the Lords work, thank you kindly.
The fact that they took Rylan out of the setlist still hurts. But they were amazing
They still look to be playing it pretty often when singers are available
they played it in minneapolis tonight with indigo sparke as the second vocalist!! surprisingly different sound to it but still incredible
Que grandes que sos The National ❤️
I first saw The National in 2011, and a half dozen times since. Always brilliant and Matt's commitment to dragging the wired Mike through the audience and sucking down bottles of wine is always thrilling.
beautiful gigs, so many memories, before this fountaines d.c. and Beck, what a day!
Holy moly! Mistaken for Strangers is UNHINGED!
Saw the last week. Dude is great up front, still powerful. He gets it.
Wow, this may be the best version of Terrible Love I've heard.
What a cool choice to have I Need My Girl followed by This Is The Last Time and then Slow Show. Gotta love subtle genius like that when putting together a set list.
Rare to catch Slow Show live these days! My wife and I's first dance at our wedding
The BEST of the BEST!
One of my fave band ✨
Looking forward to seeing them tomorrow in Minneapolis! For as great as their albums are, nothing quite like seeing them live.
How was the show? Last time I saw them in the Twin Cities was at the Excel Energy Center. However, they previously played two nights at First Ave for High Violet and that was 10x better!
Wonderful. And the set list has much from "Trouble will find me" which is my favourite, partly for its interesting time signatures -lots of 7/4 and some 9/4, and yet a really powerful and accessible rock album.
Seeing them next month…so excited! ❤
Amazing band! I was There
balled my eyes out during the one two punch of slow show/apartment story, and im sure the rest of the show too
AMAZING. thanks Primavera Sound =} Br ♥♥
I was there. Amazing
THANK YOU
I'm crying so hard listening to this. I love them so much
this was literally me during the whole gig. there was a point in which a couple next to me grabbed me and hugged me when they played 'Light Years'
Me, too.
Good stuff thanks for putting up vid
Saw them last night at the Depot , Manchester . Was just a few feet away from the stage . No moat !
One of the greatest performances I have ever seen in 50 years of gig going. The band were fantastic and Matt was on fire. Not a poor track in the whole set. Fabulous.
Amazingly they only played one track from the brilliant last album = light years. Sadly no Mina Tindle on stage.
But you know as much as I wanted to hear Oblivions etc. It didn't really matter. Pink Rabbits , "the system only" etc etc were just magnificent.
ps Support band Dry Cleaning were very good , as were first band Mewn. Although they only played 3 tracks.
It was amazing. Perfect venue too
@@symmie666 How far back were you. ?
I was near the very front. But we were not crowded in like Sardines like you at the awful O2 Academy. Birmingham
@@keithbate9405 we were to the right of stage and about 20 feet back.. beside the large pillars. But we had loads of room too. I seen them in castlefield in 2018 and it was packed.. couldn't get a good area due to the bar and toilets being so far away ha.
@@symmie666 I was maybe 15/20 feet back with Matt in front of me. There was a really tall American Bloke (6 foot 6 or more) to my right with the State flag of the band (Kansas ?) If you looked across you must have seen him. he was a giant!
Some great clips on YT of the National . But none as good as the gig . Matt was really animated and on fire .
@@keithbate9405 yea I seen him getting into the crowd! Standard isn't it ha! By that time I was fairly oiled up on gin haha! I'm going back over all the LPs again. Would love to see them again.. it'll probably be a while I'm sure
Unbelievable intense sound. Wonderful! Would love to see them once again live in Munich or elsewhere...
Seeing them in a medium sized venue (2000 standing) in Manchester on 27 August. Support Dry Cleaning
@@keithbate9405 How was the gig?
@@nadinegebhardt5147 Hi see my comment posted 11 days ago posted on this thread.
The greatest concert I have been to since the late 1980's. In my all-time top ten gigs.
I have seen over the last 50 years the following live: Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Dire Straits, U2 , REM (9 times) , The Clash , The Sex Pistols, David Bowie, Joy Divsion etc. etc.
The National were better than any of them !
@@nadinegebhardt5147 around 8 tracks have been uploaded to YT from the gig= Manchester/Mayfield. They show that Matt was on fire and the brilliant atmosphere = enjoy
Ainda hoje me recordo desta atuação. Quem dera que regressem em 2024.
Seeing comments of bringing a dad mid 40s and finding the promised land of music have never been more spot on 😢
This was the best concert of Weekend 1
well...
Exactly what somebody who didn't see Otoboke Beaver would say!
@@adamsennitt This! But Sharon Van Etten, Little Simz, Caribou and Einstürzende Neubauten performed really good.
dude, they're still struggling to get out of Pavement's pocket...
Always a great band, great emotions, even if Matt voice is not at his best. I'm still waiting for The National in Italy......
Infatti che diavolo è successo alla voce???
@@rubentus1980 E' preoccupante, spero che sia solo stanchezza vocale momentanea e non usura precoce permanente.....
@@salinger2000 It's probably a permanent vocal wear, in this case, there's nothing matt can do, i think
Comunque mi consola ritrovare un'ottima voce di Matt nell'ultimo lavoro dei National, a mio avviso molto bello. Great Matt voice in all The National First two pages of Frankenstein.
@@salinger2000 In the studio version, vocal errors are often corrected, and also, vocal correction techniques are used, such as reverb on the record, anyways, Matt's voice is currently worn out, Matt's get anxious when he's on stage, which makes Matt's singing even worse
Tropic Morning News reminds me of Editors, mainly track Bricks and Mortar
I hear what you’re saying fella, think it’s similar drum beat and tempo
Love the visualssss
ahoy captain!!! All hail tHe NationaL!! Simply the Best all around hands down!! GET EMM!!
Love them❤
Best band ever !!
Hicieron música la melancolía the National ❤️
World class
This song is one of my best friends.
Emocionante
What a killer show, sounds great too. I'd love to get this on vinyl, sometime (please?)
Guilty Party is sooooo beautiful !!!
Needing to wear reading glasses to read the lyric teleprompter is peak Sad Dad. Respect ya’ll… we are aging
What a Show !!!
Concert of the year
@ The National: I love you so much
The gods of Dad Rock!
high matt, love you matt!
💜
THE SLOWDIVE CONCERT PRIMAVERA SOUND 2022 PLEASE
Los esperamos en chile 🇨🇱
"sad and high... now im just high" literally me
I appreciate Matt's honesty about being sad and high.
What did he say?
@@rickmartinez7386 He said something like during the pandemic he was sad and high, now he's just high.
💯
Utoob!!!! Back to the Barn!!!!!
#🔥 #Capital
My only wish is to see the King Gizzard W1 show released but I'm not even sure it got recorded.
Upload the Pavement concert pls! I was there and it was the best.
ya lo subieron capo
How did they drop Rylan from the set?
This drummer makes me crazy
🤠🤙
Seeing the National at a 2000 standing only venue in Manchester on August 27 supported by Dry Cleaning . Should be excellent . But it looks like no Mina Tindle , and no "oblivions " my favourite ever track
I'm no musician, but i can sometimes spot odd time signatures. "Guilty Party" - it seems to be in 3.5/4?
Suban el Set de Lorde!!!!!!
What song did they walk out on stage to?
Bob Dylan’s Boots of Spanish leather 🤘🏻
Matt looks like he’s been wheeled in from some kind of home somewhere. In fairness the mix is way off, but he looks super confused a lot. Like he drunk or took something before coming on stage.
well, he did say he was high lol
What’s that Bob Dylan song at the beginning?
Boots of Spanish Leather
@@JIMMYoggy342001 ^ One of my favorites. They've also walked on to "Most of the Time" (another one of Dylans best) on past tours.
What was that song playing at the start before they took to the stage?
Don't Swallow the Cap
@@poisonesspevepeno, not their first song - I mean the song as they're walking on stage before Matt even speaks
@@craigwilloughby6 Ohhh, the song is: Bob Dylan - Boots of Spanish Leather
Apartment Story.
8:46 Bloodbuzz Ohio
Ohio… ❤
They only played one song from their most recent album. Do they not have confidence in I Am Easy to Find?
On this tour, they didnt have the backup singers. Thats why, I guess.
You also get a little bit of a greatest hits setlist when bands tour between albums
The system only dreams in total darkness, why are you hiding from me?
Bryan freakin devendorf
Great choice of tracks covering the whole career and band at its best... Only Matt left his voice back in Brooklyn..
i thought exactly the same! where is his voice?
The Strokes concert please
The guitar and bass tones at this show are absolutely killer. I was fortunate enough to see them on this tour, it was an incredible show. Like many others, Tropic is my new favourite song, but the live version...the album version is a let down when you compare it to the energy that explodes off the stage when they play it live.
Way late, but Tropic Morning News is great on the album but as a live song it's perfect
soñado
I was there, I told them, don't do it that way, you'll never make a dime
Matt is smashed here lol
The last Masculine band on Earth.
Lorde!!!
Lorde!!!!
Is Matt possibly a little too drunk tonight?
Omg, what happened to Matt's voice????
Put your phones away and enjoy the moment
Lorde!!!!!!
32:32
woa live his voice didn’t exactly sound like this
Yeah live recordings never quite sound as good as the performance, especially with the vocals
That’s so true. His voice was so much powerful.
Thank god, I'm seeing them in a couple of days and this worried me lol
@@ocruz333 honestly from experience, don't be put off
that's the effect of how loud everything comes through the PA. What you're hearing *now* is the soundboard. Matt's an awful singer if people are familiar with great singing and honest with themselves. But he's a great writer fronting a great band and that's enough for me.
