Thank you for actually TEACHING! The vast majority of turning videos are both intriguing and frustrating for a beginner like me, because there’s no explanation of anything. Just shots of chips flying. Nothing about the speed of the lathe, the tool being used, the angle holding the tool etc. I think we’re expected to watch and go “ah, wonderful!” And be amazed. Like so many things in this world turning looks easy as pie when someone with skills and lots of practice does it. An onlooker might think “That’s not so hard. Anyone could do that.” But as you know so well, and thank you for sharing, there’s a lot more to it than meets the beginner’s eye.
Great video, thanks. I enjoy the mix of short and longer 'start to finish' videos as provides a full learning experience. I was initially a little hesitant at the length of the video, until I started watching as it was full of relevant content.
Ken, newbie to your material, also very new to turning in general. I could not turn off this video because of the way you produced it and the amount of instruction you provide throughout. Your reference to posted material is amazing and I feel I will be investing time learning more from you going forward. I’m excited to have found you!
Thank you, Jim and welcome. I have courses that will streamline your learning process, if you'd like. www.TurnAWoodBowl.com/courses All the best to you and Happy Turning!
A good teacher knows what is going through the student's head as they watch, and explaining what they are seeing, and using language that they can understand, is a sure sign of the gift of teaching. Excellent longer video. Many thanks.
Hi Kent. I am not a woodturner, rather I am a disabled & retired Senior Master of Art (teacher) from South Australia & so I tend to look at things with the eye of an Artist. I watch a huge number of woodturning videos because I wanted to take up woodturning as a hobby in my retirement. Alas my disabilities caught up with more rapidly than hoped for & by the time I got a lathe & got it installed, I was no longer able to hold the gouges with any real degree of safety so now I watch woodturning videos by the dozens & admire the skills of others. I believe there was clearly a huge display of the Artist/Craftsman in this video & the skills you have developed. It was also a very educational video which is what you intended. Don, thank you so much for your very kind and thoughtful words! I'm sorry you are unable to turn, but glad you find enjoyment watching these videos. I wish you all the best. Please take care and thank you again kindly!
Kent. I have recently discovered your channel. You are doing a great job. I have a renewed interest in turning bowls. I have used a microwave to dry various projects, including bowls. I call my process ‘ 30/30 ‘. I wrap the piece in two or three layers of newspaper. Microwave for 30 seconds then leave it undisturbed in the oven for 30 minutes. After thirty minutes you will find the moisture has migrated to the paper. Repeat process until paper emerges dry. Less scientific than weighing but end result is dry ( equalized ) moisture, ready for finish. David Brooks, Cool-n-Organic Woodwork. 🤠
Hey Kent - I gotta say that I was so engrossed with your video that I was shocked to see that an hour had gone by without even realizing it. It is so refreshing to find someone willing to buck the trend of 5 or 6 minute 'tutorial' videos. I am very glad I came across your channel all those weeks ago. Keep them coming!
Very nicely done. It is not an ego show like most other You Tubers do but an actual learning experience. Thank you for adding quality back into this media
@@TurnAWoodBowl I have been turning for 18 years and have done numerous club demos and some regional demos as well. Turning wood was my favorite part of shop class. Now I am pushing hard against 65 years young. A group of kids (27) from our church ages 5-14, would like to learn about woodworking. Part of the learning down the road a bit will be turning. Thank you for the videos, brings back very good memories.
Really appreciate your teaching and commitment to creating informational content. You turning skills are incredible and I hope to get good through watching your tutorials. Happy turning
Loved the video. Very well explained. I have a better understanding of twice turning, the role of microwave, ebonization & finally what to do with boring wood! Thank You Sir from across the sea...

It's also an easy way for me to locate information when I'm looking for a refresher on a subject. I really appreciate your efforts to produce quality videos.
It is always a joy watching one of Kent's tutorials. I have been into wood turning for just over a year, and I went in hard. I am still working on my technique without actually going to any classes. I must say though, watching your videos are informative, and relaxing at the same time. Nothing wipes away the stresses of the day, as doing some turning (so long as nothing goes wrong of course). Thank you Kent, and keep up the great work.
That is awesome! Thank you, Spenser for writing and sharing. I'm glad these videos help and connect with you. Yes, turning is the best to wash away troubles. All the best to you and Happy Turning!
👍👌 Beautiful "WORKING" and common sense easy to understand video. The MICROWAVE working is new to me, I've got to see! THANKS for the watch-along!!! 😍😍😍😍😍
The longer format is great for demonstrating a “process”. This bowl design and creation was very helpful. I’m getting back into turning after a 10 year break and I’m watching a lot of different turners on RUclips. There are a lot of great turners but I think I get more out of your videos than anyone’s.
What on the surface seems like a long and tedious video, is in fact an excellent representation. It gives a realistic idea of how long a simple project can actually take. All the rest of the turning videos I watch use many areas that speed up greatly in order to get to the finished project. I'm a beginner with only one lesson, and am looking at purchasing my first lathe. This is good for me to watch for realism.
As a newbie to wood turning these video’s are the best way for me to learn. Watch and then have a go myself. Thanks for your efforts to produce them it is really appreciated.
The great thing I like about your video is that you stop the lathe frequently so we can see what’s going on and where we are with the chunk of wood. Thanks Randall
Thank you Kent for another grest video. I appreciate you explaining everything and every step you do while turning. Really helps me in my turning. Thank-you!
You're doing a great job of demonstrating the art of bowl turning. I want to get into this and will be watching as many of your videos as possible. Thank you so much!
Thanks, picked up a few things to try on the lathe today. I like the long videos - I feel I have most of the basic techniques down so I am less likely to search for specific shorter videos unless I need a refresher. I enjoy the longer videos to see the thought process and how you make certain decisions as the wood reveals itself.
Wow, Kent! you created such a beauty! I absolutely ADORE the black. And to answer your question to all of us, I for one, really appreciate your going into detail about the different steps. You obviously are a 'born' teacher. And I echo what someone else said, because I was thinking the same thing following along with you, a true teacher can anticipate what said, student, surely has skipping through their mind at any given point of time. And with such ease, a great teacher nimbly addresses each and every issue brilliantly. We're not there personally. But one feels like we are. Thank you again for such a wonderful presentation.
Just stumbled into your bowl video and even though I've been turning for years, I had an eye opening moment and now have subscribed, liked and look forward to more. Great job, thanks.
Just found this....I'll be buying a wood turning lathe and getting into wood turning soon (after we move house) This will be my go to channel for my education. Thanks.
So informative and professional. I really appreciate the longer videos. Never watched you before. Bn turning stair parts between centres for a good few years but now taking early retirement I would like to start to turn bowls. I think I have so much to learn as technology and techniques have moved on so much. But with the quality instructional videos you are putting out I feel in safe hands. You have me hooked! Have a good Christmas and God bless. George from Ireland.
Another great video Kent that gave me lots of ideas. I've been using a lot of maple that I get from my property and wanted to let you know that I love your twice turning approach. So I took two large pieces of maple from the same tree, about 14" diameter each and rough turned them. I then coated one with Anchor Seal and the other with some latex paint that I had. The one with the Anchor Seal cracked after about 8 months of drying. The one covered completely in latex paint was very dry and had zero cracks. I think I am going to use latex paint to cover my wood in the future. Your video that showed how to fix cracks using carpenter's glue and sanding it came in handy on the cracked bowl. Thank you for sharing your bowl turning skills!
I’m new to woodturning, so pleased I found your channel. I think this is the second video of yours I’ve seen. Love the long format as I can see questioned I have answered as you progress through the stages. I will be going back through your tutorials and tips for sure!
wanted to learn how to ebonize. Wow what a great tutorial and a beautiful piece of Mulberry. Great info rmation to help a rookie turner grow his skill. Thank you for your skill.
New sub here. It's a pleasure to watch another artist ply his craft. And you my friend, are an artist. That was such a beautiful piece of wood as well. And this is not a critique, just a personal choice, but I cried just a bit when that gorgeous buttery outside grain got covered up though you are right that it does compliment that butteryness on the inside. On the other hand, I learned how to deal with an exterior that might not be as gorgeous so thank you for the idea. I haven't had any time to turn since I started my Friday night livestream as it has consumed all of my time for the last two years because of the intense production that goes into it (I'm a music man), but you make me want to warm up the lathe again!
Thank you for writing and sharing your kind words! Yes production for these videos is time consuming too. I can relate. All the best to you and Happy Turning (in the future)!
I really appreciate your video for the total demonstration of the process of carving ...and the ending with the ebonized technique, that remind me some Japanese work. Thank you very much. Salutations, Roberto
I watched the entire video hoping to see the bowl get finished to end since this was a long video but no you pulled the rug out from under me. I really enjoy the way you teach. I learn allot from you. You explain things in a way I can understand it & put it to use. ....🇺🇸GrUmPy🇺🇸....
I must say no matter how long we have turned it’s so good to watch you turn and going back to the material of the art. I do say you are a true artist and an amazing teacher. Thank you for your many hours of mentorship.
I watched this a long time ago and it just popped up again while I have a beautiful wet piece of maple in my lathe. It was/is my plan to do twice turning with a stop at the microwave. Great stuff once again!
AH! You finally said what kind of wood it was! Ha ha. Mulberry. 42:42. (I thought it might be Ash) Thanks. Man, I'm learning so much from these! I can't wait to get to your other videos that you mention. Thanks. Great videos, Kent!
OK then. I just stumbled across this video. I picked up several “ah ha” things. The one that I liked the most was about the inside curve and if it is not gradual it requires more tool work. That is where I end up on many occasions. Listening to you mention other videos got me excited to the point that I subscribed right away. Yes I like the long start to finish video concept. Even though I knew most of what was in the video I picked up lots of fine points. I don’t consider myself an artist but more of a hack. I make lots of bowls and large salt and pepper mills (on my Nova). On my Jet mini I make small boxes, assorted kits like ice cream scoops, spy glasses and the like, miniature things like goblets, bowls, tooth fairy boxes and of course pens. With your videos I hope to refine my skill set. Who knows, maybe I will be able to call myself an artist some day.
Thank you for writing and sharing, Sparky! I'm so glad you're picking up those subtle details and learning for the videos. With persistent, patient practice you'll be making the bowls you imagine! All the best to you and Happy Turning!
very good movie and lesson like all the others. The long format is great because it shows the entire process in detail. For beginners (like me) this is great. There are always dozens of news and you discuss and show them. On the other hand, the short format is also great, for one specific element (tip) The topics I propose: 1) height of the lathe in relation to the hands, torso, eyes, ergonomic posture 2) turning a goblet with a long foot (here are a lot of pitfalls) I learn to woodturning three months and yesterday I figured out my first goblet project, it turned out to be 3+ but I know more, and next version will be better.
Hi Kent From NZ were in lockdown again! but watching you turn that beautiful bowl sure makes life easier, thank you for sharing your expertise its encouraged me to get back out to my lathe and make some shavings Regards
For me, the longer video is much better. I guess I'm a slow learner but I need the detail. You are an excellent teacher not leaving me with a lot left for experimenting. There are plenty of remaining experiences to gain.
A very effective instructional video. Thanks. You cover minor, but important details such as brush type, brush stroke, etc., to keep us deeply engaged. Your presentation style gives the feeling that you are teaching us in person. I regularly watch your videos to educate myself.
Always a pleasure to watch. Not only a good demonstration each time but also an excellent teacher, talking every step of the way. There are times I heard you say, ‘I’ll bump up the speed a bit’, those are the moments I wish I knew the next level of speed. Thanks again for the great demos.
wow im glad i found you i bought my first lathe and now that the weather is starting to warm up i cant wait to get started you explained more in one show than all the other i dont watch shows that are longer than 15 minutes but now that you are giving better content you will be my go to guy thanks
Welcome aboard! Thank you for watching. Yes, I don't like long videos either, but I can't figure out how to show all the steps and techniques in 10 minute videos. LOL Thanks for watching and Happy Turning!
Hey Kent, wow, your black bowl is superb, awesome, and great to watch all of your steps to create such a masterpiece, am wanting to try again, even after had severe case of Spinal Meningitis, which took my memory and short term away, need to get list of things to help me get started again, along with your videos; thank you, from start to finish, let m see how bad this sickness did to me, Stan.
Prefer the longer vids really helpful, keep up the good work, especially like the way you articulate and breakdown the methods employed throughout the whole process. Many Thxs from the UK 🇬🇧
Turned my first bowl today! Started out making an 1 1/4” dowel rod first to get comfortable with tools. Got 1 CBN wheel fro D-Way Tool and got the sharpening system completed yesterday. Yay! This will be a slightly spalted hard maple twice turned bowl. Thanks for your videos Kent, they really have helped. I’m a pretty good peeler already 🤩
Really enjoyed this video. I am a victim of Hurricane Ida and had a 46" diameter pecan tree split my house. The only good thing about it. Is that o now have lots of pecan wood for turning. This blonde color of the pecan should make for a nice contrast. I'm ready to give it a try! I really enjoy your videos. Thanks for sharing yoir knowledge and expertise.
I'VE ALWAYS LIKED WORKING WITH WOOD BECAUSE MY DAD MADE ALL KINDS OF WOOD PROJECTS HE ALSO CARVED A LOT OF WOOD TO AND I LOVED TO WATCHED HIM ALL THE TIME AND I LEARNED MORE BY WATCHING HIM THEN I DID HANDS ON BUT I ALWAYS LEARNED MORE FROM MY DAD WATCHING AND LISTENING TO HIM THAN I DID FROM A BOOK BUT ENOUGH ABOUT THAT I'M SORRY THAT MY STORY WAS SO LONG BUT HOW COULD I OF EXPLAINED IT WITH OUT THE STORY BEING SO LONG IT COULD OF BEEN A LOT LONGER WELL TAKE CARE AND STAY SAFE

I really appreciate your video for the total demonstration of the process of carving ...and the ending with the ebonized technique, that remind me some Japanese work. Thank you very much.

Thank you so much!!!
I watched this a long time ago and it just popped up again while I have a beautiful wet piece of maple in my lathe. It was/is my plan to do twice turning with a stop at the microwave. Great stuff once again!
Thank you, Josh! Good timing. All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Been turning for awhile but I find your videos always bring new information and tricks to the subject. Great work. Thanks.

AH! You finally said what kind of wood it was! Ha ha. Mulberry. 42:42. (I thought it might be Ash) Thanks. Man, I'm learning so much from these! I can't wait to get to your other videos that you mention. Thanks. Great videos, Kent!
Glad to help. Glad you like these. Welcome and Happy Turning!
Sounds good, I'll make note of these. Thank you. Happy Turning!
Hi Kent
From NZ were in lockdown again! but watching you turn that beautiful bowl sure makes life easier, thank you for sharing your expertise its encouraged me to get back out to my lathe and make some shavings
Regards
Glad you enjoyed it, Mal! Ignore the silliness of the world and keep turning! All the best to you and Happy Turning!
I like having multiple topics per video. I like the project based instruction where you share your strategy and various "fixes" when necessary.
Best turning video I’ve seen. Just great.
Wow, thanks, David! Happy Turning!
As a teacher myself I love learning via the modeling technique.. thank you for your videos, that emphasis each step
Thank you, Jan! So glad to help. All the best to you and Happy Turning!
For me, the longer video is much better. I guess I'm a slow learner but I need the detail. You are an excellent teacher not leaving me with a lot left for experimenting. There are plenty of remaining experiences to gain.
Sounds good Bob. Thank you and Happy Turning!
You are an awesome teacher Coach.
I appreciate that! Thanks! Happy Turning!
@@TurnAWoodBowl You are very welcome.
A very effective instructional video. Thanks. You cover minor, but important details such as brush type, brush stroke, etc., to keep us deeply engaged. Your presentation style gives the feeling that you are teaching us in person. I regularly watch your videos to educate myself.

Brilliant video, As a new 'turner' your tutorials as inspiring.
Thank you very much Chris! All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Always a pleasure to watch. Not only a good demonstration each time but also an excellent teacher, talking every step of the way. There are times I heard you say, ‘I’ll bump up the speed a bit’, those are the moments I wish I knew the next level of speed. Thanks again for the great demos.
You'll get there Joe. Check this video out ruclips.net/video/qkAwPg-fPN8/видео.html Happy Turning!

Awesome, John! Sounds like a silver-lining to me. Enjoy and Happy Turning!
