Great work Bob, and good camera work too! Interesting to see your choice of metal and fitment. Like Chris M I am a programmer by day but enjoy welding as a hobby. I live on acreage with a fenced property, so deliveries are an issue. I built a large "delivery mailbox" for packages to be left securely. Did something similar to your approach but boy, you killed it WRT time. I spent hours working on that mailbox! Of course, I went with thinner 16 gauge hot rolled steel and felt as though that choice required an inner frame, so I had to build that to support the outer sheet metal skin. Only had flux core available so there was a lot of cleaning and grinding to get a decent looking finish. In retrospect perhaps I should have gone this direction with the thicker sheet metal, thus no frame. Anyway. Thank you for sharing the expertise!
Thanks guys. It's a relatively simple project but I still learned a bunch. Looking forward to learning about why you might want to quench some material and slow cool other material. (I'm a computer programmer, not a welder, so almost everything is new to me.)
Oh, yeah, I've tried it and I love it. I've got an ultra-cheap wire-feed welder and an AC stick welder (that I can't seem to strike an arc with). I won't call myself a welder at this point though. :)
Rolling around on it proves my point that guys grow older but never grow up. I myself have never entered a second childhood since I'm still happy with my first.
Hey Bob, Good project. Here's an idea; how about welding or installing on a tap at the bottom of the tank to facilitate emptying and changing out of the cooling water.
auggie augbourn well I am a master plumber and a welder. so that was the first thing I thought how to drain it. Thanks for all the great videos I always learn something
I didn't realize it was mild steel until 11:50 when Bob whipped out the magnets. I saw cooling tank and assumed it should have been made out of stainless. :-/
What is a good way to ensure good penetration on an open joint using MIG, we are building a fryer in class. And I am having some trouble keeping the water in. 11 gauge steel like your using for the tank.
Loved this video as a fab and weld project for a little change. Fyi im 100% self taught from this channel and jody. Cant thank ya enough! One other thing, i might have missed it but what wire size were you using? Thanks!!
hey bob, huge fan of your channel! absolutly love it! anyway you could do a video with either demonstrating grinding a j bevel on a pipe, or welding a j bevel on a piece of heavy wall pipe? cant seem to get the hang of it. 9% chromium, 1.5" wall thickness (dont have to do it that thick) with a j bevel. tig 30% out, and either fluxcore balance or stick balance. basically a steam turbine tie in. mine passed phased array, but id like some more knowledge and tricks on how to do it better and faster. thanks bob! love the show!
If you trying to improve production and if your procedure allows switch to flux core as early as you can. TIG is great for that perfect root and hot pass but it is painfully slow. Flux core is way more efficient that TIG and SMAW so use it if it is available. You will also reduce stop starts and the slag on a lot of products peels off by itself
That camera guys is getting rather brash. He got in a few shots there. First he thinks he can hang on the golf course with you, then he thinks he can be a bob level rockstar?
Cool build. You be sure and keep that thing off the highway, now. Also, i6 think a spigot fixture close to the bottom will really make your life easier when it comes time to change your cooling liquid. Not so much for the sand, but hey. Can't have everything. Not in my tax bracket anyway.
Nice work guys, that hypertherm cuts real nice in the hands of a good operator. No drain plug/valve bob come on man you getting to old to lift that full of water haha or did you run out of time ? cant wait to see the pulse tig outside corner with the esab machine
Your timing is impeccable! I'm just getting ready to start a very similar tank. As a real newbie to tig welding I am finding open outside corners easier to run than just practice beads on a coupon. Is this normal?
i'm a bit surprised that you put very little weld on the wheels. thats where all the weight is focused, so why not a few more small welds at least? maybe there's a good reason i can't figure out
Love the practical projects bob, I saw you have a technique doing a birds mouth for making out it would be great if you could do a video on fabrication tips lay out cutting tips anything that would help novice welders improve 👍
World headquarters lol. You could get real trick with a pump and a small tube and shell heat exchanger with a thermocouple inside going to a temp controller and oh never mind
Oh Bob.... Don't ever change! Enjoyed watching your build... especially enjoyed watching you ride it across the shop.
"Coupin' Cooler" + Beer & Ice then stand back & admire...... Great Work Gentleman.
Pretty cool. I liked the plasma cutting technique the best.
Great little project to show plasma cutting by hand. Keep having fun doing what you do.
Tex Cali We intend to!
Great video. Nice to see so much of the overall build. Was able to spot all kinds of tips and tricks that are not often shown in project videos.
This is a great video! Really like Bob's down to earth approach and good teaching methods.

This a great video. It shows a bit of everything. I absolutely love using my powerplasma cutter and mig welder.
This guy is the Bob Ross of welding I love it!
Great job. love all your videos big thanks from Denmark.
Man, next project needs to be a downdraft system for that burning table.
15:45 - worth the watch!
Sharing, educating, working and having fun. “Priceless”.
Thanks guys. It's a relatively simple project but I still learned a bunch. Looking forward to learning about why you might want to quench some material and slow cool other material. (I'm a computer programmer, not a welder, so almost everything is new to me.)
Chris M you should give it a try welding is required in the world as a begginer in welding i learned stuff
Oh, yeah, I've tried it and I love it. I've got an ultra-cheap wire-feed welder and an AC stick welder (that I can't seem to strike an arc with). I won't call myself a welder at this point though. :)
Different materials require cooling to happen at a slower rate. For welding test coupins it's generally okay to quench it.
Weld.com im aware of that i learned a technique where i move and stop a bit beacuse thin metal wants to meltdown
After my first bead, I learned just how hot metal gets when its welded. Doh!
That mag set made me cry, wish i had one
Rolling around on it proves my point that guys grow older but never grow up. I myself have never entered a second childhood since I'm still happy with my first.
Nice work! Thank you.
great video. please do more fit/fab project videos like this, very beneficial to watch the whole process from layout to finished product.
i ve been doing mig mag welding for a while and its going good
Another great vid. Thanks Bob
Dang Bob! Why wasn't I lucky enough to have you as my teacher?! Great work as always sir!
Cool video man bob knows how to get things done ✅ good job bob as always 👍👊🏻👊🏻
Professor o senhor é muito bom profissional....obrigado por dividir seu conhecimento ,nos ensinar.
COOL tank and seat.
I wish i had an uncle like Bob
Bob these videos are awesome, you should think about a mirror welding vid maybe some tig on 2G pipe...
Great work
I like watching these project based builds. I am always looking for projects to make with my everlast welder.
Good video Bob enjoyed watching it thanks,
Very cool! Would love to see more real world projects that would be good beginner projects but still useful!
Hi Bob Great job looks real good have a happy 4th of july
Cooling tank looks good 👍
Such a Cool Simple video! Thanx Bob for the Video! Some Pretty Awesome Tips! Like corner corner jointwith about a 2 mm Gap! Thats Helpfull
No root pass on the downhill?! Just messin lol
Another great video, keep up the good work.
Yes sir thank you!
Thank you boss!!🙏🏻🥷🖖

Oceanic 84 In the works with a ball vavle.
@ 11:20 - no special cutting guard on this AG. I got my head bit off for doing this on jobsite. Glad to see a real pro doing it.
Great video. I wonder what old Bob thinks of the lightweld 1500 🤣
Great project bob. The style of editing used on this video is rather similar to how jimmy Diresta edits his. Love it 👍🏻👍🏻
For A old GUY, You do really nice with the grinder!!!!!
Bob is my favorite
16:52 is what I came for. Bob delivered.
That smoke cloud looks nasty.
How long did it take
Happy 4th Bob USA
Like the video & would like to see you and your students do some more projects with some
tips/trick along the way.
How did it not buckle! Very helpful video thanks
where can i get the holding magnets you use at 11:57?
Gunnar Magswitch
Coupins cooler looks good 👍
Awesome project thumbs up
Left handed Monkey Thank you sir for the support.
Mr Rogers demonstrates ASMR welding process :-)
cool build, thanks for the video.
that would have been a nice stick welding project for someone who is learning
Nice job Bob, as it's mild steel will you prime / paint it to prevent corrosion or do you have a better way to finish it? Best Regards Sarah
Sarah Loyd Prime / paint.
Drain at the bottom ?
Beat me to it. That tank is gonna weigh a ton full of funky water , mig BBs and slag.
auggie augbourn well I am a master plumber and a welder. so that was the first thing I thought how to drain it. Thanks for all the great videos I always learn something
where do you get those little yellowish-green magnets?
Easy as that! Awesome!
Nice Project,,,,is there anything with Aluminium?
Wow I guess Mr. Bob Moffat created a dual purpose cooling tank that could double as a rolly chair
Hahaha! Yeah that was a little too much cheese, but hey.....
How about adding a drain to it?
Already done.
I didn't realize it was mild steel until 11:50 when Bob whipped out the magnets. I saw cooling tank and assumed it should have been made out of stainless. :-/
Bob as a man of experience, how do u tie in a tack weld (stick welding)? Do u overlap it or what do u do? If any1 could help that would be great

Mr Bob good job mr bob
Why u didn't backpurged it with argone, dude?
Does the shop have a press brake? would be cool to see another way to make the same box, just less welding and cutting.
never too old to get that work in, eh!
Loved this video as a fab and weld project for a little change. Fyi im 100% self taught from this channel and jody. Cant thank ya enough! One other thing, i might have missed it but what wire size were you using? Thanks!!
songer121 .035
Great job, look nice tank. I just wonder how much time you spend on welding?
How to fab a box... Epic!
You should put in a drain plug
No drain hole?
hey bob, huge fan of your channel! absolutly love it! anyway you could do a video with either demonstrating grinding a j bevel on a pipe, or welding a j bevel on a piece of heavy wall pipe? cant seem to get the hang of it.

Do you still teach at the college?
Weld a fitting on the bottom for a valve to easily drain the tank
15:48 this happens if you breath to much welding fumes :)
UltraGaming 😆😆
UltraGaming lol
Well played. 😂
I do want to know... How much were you out of square?
None!!
What were the measurements for everything? I plan on making one in trade as practice. Thanks I really appreciate you replying in advance!
18"
No brake?
Have you thought about adding a drain valve to this? so you dont have to dump it over to drain all the water
is this stainless steel ? 304 ? I'm surprised you didnt get any distortion.
manu de hanoi Not Stainless. This one is mild Steel.
Is it watertight there Bob?
Mr Wolf Uh, yeess it is
I was surprised when you said a bug hole or worm hole of porosity to seal up. A leak sounded like a rookie move that you wouldn't make.
Mr Wolf it happens. 30 second fix.
You have taught me a lot being a noob GTAWer. 🙋

or did you run out of time ?
cant wait to see the pulse tig outside corner with the esab machine
Could someone be so kind as to explain the rationale for down hill postion instead of flat? Much appreciated
John Kinsella Probably because it’s not structural and downhill is much faster and easier to get really smooth welds.
Your timing is impeccable! I'm just getting ready to start a very similar tank. As a real newbie to tig welding I am finding open outside corners easier to run than just practice beads on a coupon. Is this normal?
Canuck Loyalist I had the same thing happen. It just works really well without much effort. Everyother fit up I've tried has been disastrous.
i'm a bit surprised that you put very little weld on the wheels. thats where all the weight is focused, so why not a few more small welds at least? maybe there's a good reason i can't figure out
Because the welds are in compression. Why overweld?
Love the practical projects bob, I saw you have a technique doing a birds mouth for making out it would be great if you could do a video on fabrication tips lay out cutting tips anything that would help novice welders improve 👍
That was some nasty smoke coming from under the cutting table.
Bob Rees seriously. I've never seen plasma cutting done on clean steel that looks that funky.
I never realized how much smoke is produced by the plasma cutter.
Giddyup.
hello bob :)
It's a welding video, I get it, but the press brake was invented for a reason.
Jay Bee Buy me one?
Bob Moffatt Ha ha, I'll shut up.
Quench tank
World headquarters lol. You could get real trick with a pump and a small tube and shell heat exchanger with a thermocouple inside going to a temp controller and oh never mind
