This is a fair review imo and I'd also give it an 8/10. Although I loved the combat and the intense visual spectacles with mature themes, I think some of that "FF" charm was lost. It is RPG-lite in terms of crafting and stat enhancements, status ailments, which I think could have really made the game more balanced and increase the challenge further. This would have pushed it up to 9 for me. I did enjoy the story overall from Clive's perspective, but would have loved to see more emphasis from other characters. I did miss the active party system, which would have added more layers to combat. And I can't give enough praise to the VAs and to Ben Starr's performance. And what a fantastic performance indeed. Of course, the music was an absolute audio treat and kept me engaged throughout.
It's as if i'm reading my own thoughts when i read your comment. I loved the story and i loved Clive's journey, which is in no small part due to Ben Starr's performance. Not to mention Cid and Ralph Ineson's performance as him. But i would have liked to have seen more of what Joshuas had been doing the past 13 years, also Gav and Otto. They get surprisingly little screen time, eventhough they are presented as Clive's best friends and next to Jill, the closest comanders under him. Not to mention Jill. She came of very bland, not really fleshed out, which was more than ok from the start given the trauma she had suffered, but she is very much "kept in background" after giving Clive the push he needed to come back "to the living". We get that final scene were Clive and Joshua makes an effort at making Jill happy were she again confesses her love for Clive and how she knew he would always come to her rescue, but that still just left her as the main characters "love interest" and not her own person. There is material to take from, like her friend she told to leave when we infiltrate the base, that we never get to see again. Take FF7 as an example, both Tifa and Aerith are love intrests for Cloud through out the story, yet they are also fleshed out as ther own characters beyond their relationship with Cloud. I would have preffered _more_ side missions focusing on Jill, Gav and Otto. It's litterally only close to the end of the game where we even get a few scenes were Clive and Gav just hang out as friends and a scene were Otto reads an old letter from CId were we see Clive and Otto show the bond they have built over the years. I think i would have given the game a 10/10 if it had the junction system closer to the older FF games with elemental weaknesses and strengths and couple of more interesting side missions with Clive's closer friends. But as it stands now, i agree with your 8/10.
