I know Yoshi-P said he wanted to drop the Roman numerals of each mainline. But personally I’m kinda mixed on that thought. Sure, it may clear up confusion for new fans on asking what game to play first, but at the same time, I feel like the Roman numerals are just a core aspect of the Final Fantasy brand.
Once we get to Final Fantasy XX (which is a LONG TIME away), then I can understand dropping the numbers

I understand what you mean, but it's not susteinable unless you keep your entire playerbase basically "forever". I've heard and read more times than i can remember that a very large number of younger gamers don't touch FF because they see the title say 16 for example and think they should play 15 games before that, and like many people on any type of media comsuption, they don't ask so they never know that each title is self-contained. Of course we know that, but we are not enough to make games on these scale profitable.

Like I said before.... Final Fantasy needs to feel like a Final Fantasy. It has nothing to do with new generations. Crystals, world ending events, a cast of characters that are emotionally charged, job classes, steampunk with some sci-fi elements, airships, eidolons and last and most important......A happy ending with sad notes. FF7 and FF9 being the greatest examples of endings. FF7 was proof that you don't need all these elements to feel like Final Fantasy, but you at least need most of it and if you take something out, you need to put a equivalent to it back in.

Honestly think hiring "fans" could be a hot mess. Mass Effect: Andromeda was mainly developed by fans of the ME trilogy, and we saw how that turned out. I think FFXVII should be led by a less established team within Square, but partially staffed by newer hirers. That way we get the best of both worlds.
As for the game itself, gameplay HAS to build off of the VIIR system. Its the best mix of real-time and turnbased that's possible right now. XVI was a good game, but its combat was bad for the series. Personally, I'd love a setting that pulls inspiration from regions like the Middle East or Southeast Asia. Natsuko Ishikawa would be a great lead writer for XVII. However, also think dropping the numbering scheme is a bad idea.

I'd love to see Hamaguchi as director as well, this guy just gets it. In the scenario writing seat(s), my picks would obviously be none other than Hironobu Sakaguchi the lord himself and that crazy bastard Yoko Taro. Music ? Keiichi Okabe and Nobuo Uematsu for additional tracks. Could even bring Yoko Shimomura for some insane boss battle tracks.
Combat could go either way, the FF7R route or full on turn-based combat. Square Enix should watch closely at what Clair Obscur and Metaphor are doing right now, bringing back the formula this time around and going back to what made Final Fantasy what it was in the first place could be a great idea.

Before I begin my comment, just know that I have nothing agaisnt Naoki Yoshida, i think FF XIV is one of the most ambitious MMORPG video games of all time and its target demographic is not just MMO fans but people that enjoy the FF series as well. How ever, the largest problem with FF XVI is that it was developed by a guy that carries the whole MMO core philosophy of design in his creative work. Its great as an MMO for being the type of game that it is, but when working on something that is supposed to carry on the legacy of the FF brand main series, this is where it goes sour. FF XVI had an immensely satisfying start, but it unfortunately devolved into its MMO conventions which I think turned alot of longtime fans away, not to mention that it was a single player action game. I think for FF XVII, it would probably be better suited in the hands of creative division 1 because they do realistically understand more the DNA of what constitutes a offline jrpg for this beloved franchise. Or it can even a brand new team to breath life back into the series with a different perspective based on experience playing the many games of the past.
Also, congratulations at achieving 100k subs NSP. I am happy to be a long time subscriber of yours.

I think for me... the must-have to grab an audience nowadays (that isn't Roblox or Fortnite adjacent lmao) is story and characters first and foremost.
Looking to indie games specifically for guidance given they're well-loved amongst younger kids- You got your Celestes or your Undertales- your In Stars and Times and even goddamn Five Nights at Freddy's, I can see kids gravitating towards Final Fantasy if it has a REALLY damn good story. I'd also say maybe avoid heavy fan service- maybe aim for a 15+ age rating- along the lines of what Twilight Princess is. Just for the time being!
Cause' kids will most likely still gravitate toward M rated games (M is 15+ in my country for context PFFT), like how when I was 12, I shouldn't have played Twilight Princess but got incredibly hooked on it despite the age rating.
Thats what I think 16 missed the mark with- being MA (aimed at 17+ basically), it avoided a key audience that the series heavily needs to cater to right now in this time.
That's also why FFXV probably did really well, it was 15+ and encouraged newer fans- younger fans to jump in.
I mean I was that exact key demographic of 15-year-olds when I found the game LMAO
Let the series grow up with new generations. When they're around adulthood, then it's your shot to give another MA or even R rated FF a go, maybe once in a while. I just think 16 being mature came at kinda a bad time for the series. BUT I bet kids will still play it in the future once they get to know the series more.
But yes, my main source of inspo for a FF story would be indie games- given indie games and media are also surpassing mainstream media in DROVES. (Also I'm a guilty 2000's kid who grew up in the Undertale and FNAF era PFFT So that's... kinda my stance)
And my other idea, would 100% be: DEVELOP YOUR CHARACTERS TO THE BEST U CAN! I know a few recent Final Fantasy games have had those... characters you just don't like, or those characters that even you thinking up a story for them would be better than what they got.
Again turning to Undertale and deltarune- the way you can connect with the characters so much- even if they first appear to be standard archetypes, the more the story progresses, the more you LEARN about them.
That's also why when I played FF6 for the first time like, 2 weeks ago lmao, it's rised to being my 2nd fave FF, just because the majority of your party are so diverse in personalities and stories.
So overall- Story and Characters aswell as a 15+ age range that can garner new audiences and also bring back long-time fans. Figure out what the kids who DON'T play online games, like.
Maybe also look to what worked with past games- look to what you can make a spin on. I'll be honest, I really don't mind what direction the next game goes, I mean- I don't like the gameplay style much of 16 but it's still my 4th fave FF PFFT It's bloody fantastic >:3!
But these are just my views. I didn't grow up with the series- got into it late 2018 actually, but I feel just from the games I've played and what the sorta game scape now is, these are just my thoughts.
Sorry for such a long text, if anyone read this, UHH HI LMAO
    And uh
To cap this off: I'd like a really good ass villain with 17 aswell, adjacent to Kefka, Kuja, Ardyn or Sephiroth :>

I feel like the "these games don't meet expectations" worries are the easiest thing on the fucking planet to fix.
    1. "Expectations" are vague. Just because some subhuman scum-sucking investors "expected" a game to sell 85 gorrilion copies, spawn 8 years of netflix tie-ins, and create a 20 year live-service platform which makes 4 billion a year on some stupid battlepass doesn't mean the game didn't recoup its own development costs.
    2. Focus on releasing for as many platforms as you can swing, and since the new switch is going to be more powerful, launch there as well. FF16 probably would have surprised in sales if they weren't so determined on exclusivity. If Sony wants an exclusive title for their platform, let them actually pay for it instead of taking deals which only cause Square Enix pain.

All of their general gamedesigns in the FF HD AAA era are somewhere between sloggish, boring, generic, anoying and frustrating. Not even talking about combat. More about Pacing, general Gameplay-flow, exploration, skilltree-designs, variety of landscsapes, side-content, QoL-stuff, invisible walls having forced backward walking, forced slowed walking, QTEs in Cutscenes etc etc. They need to deeply improve it or otherwise I'll say the sales will keep decrease and multiplat won't fix it on the long run. My eyes are on FF9R, DQ12, Verum Rex and the new Sakaguchi game. And of course Clair Obscur. Having said that, of course I'm still here and want them to convince me. I definitely think some new blood should handle 17 I agree with Yoshi-P, and with Nomura talking about retirement maybe it is time. Honestly, I would like a frontier story, a return to the found family formula, and while I think an Eastern inspired setting could be amazing, Type-1 was also supposed to be an Eastern inspired Orience, so maybe mainly Eastern elements but give it an "Old West Gold Rush" vibe to splice it with. Thinking like Meiji Restoration as the root era inspiration with a little bit of Spaghetti Western sprinkled in. Also another cheerful protag with depth, I think Zidane, Tidus, Vaan and Bartz are the best protags (my opinion). And I think it would bring a breath of fresh air to the saturation of broody MCs that occasionally smile and crack 1 joke through the whole game. Gameplay not so important, I just don't want it to be saturated in side quests, (I'll make an exemption for hunt boards bc that was a ton of fun in XII), and really as long as the systems are fleshed out and robust then I'd be perfectly content. Irdc if it's action or turn-based, that's never been important to me.

I don't care about all the nitpicky details. I don't care if the next entry has a number in it. I don't even are if the graphics are cutting-edge or basic. I just want another Final Fantasy that recaptures what made the series so fun and thought-provoking. These last couple games in 16, 7 remake/rebirth, and Origin, have made me feel like the devs and directors are pandering to a group of masses that don't actually care about the fundamental concept behind FF as a series. I don't mind a little swearing, implied sensuality, violence, and drug usage in a good JRPG, especially if it's actually relevant to a certain point, but I was disappointed with how "hand-out" the 7 Remake felt, and the characters felt far more like manifestations of modern anime tropes rather than believable and relatable characters, and 16 basically was just a blood and gore and sex and swear festival, with FF tied in. I know these are all probably hot takes, I will not waste time reading scathing remarks or even compliments, I'm just stating my opinion. I've been a fan of the series since literally it's beginning. I've seen all the games, both mainline and spin offs, I've seen the movies, the anime, read the manga, I've been in love with this franchise and everything it stood for. But when 16 came out, it was the first time I seriously considered the possibility that I wasted money and time on an FF game. And that's even considering 15, the "unfinished FF". This realization hit me like a freight train. I've been a fan of this franchise since my childhood. Its stories have helped me navigate a lot of the murkier areas of my life where mentors and authority figures failed to help me. To realize that, now, all of a sudden, this series that I had come to love so dearly and rely upon for the highest quality entertainment (and sometimes enlightenment), has begun to disappoint me the same as all the other drivel in media out there, saddened and depressed me intensely. I don't want to say it, but I have to consider seriously that maybe the time when quality entertainment was within reach is gone, and I sincerely hope that in upcoming projects the devs prove me wrong, otherwise FF will be dead to me.
I just hope whatever new team works on 17 and the series from here on out, knows and understands what the game came from, and what it's been through, and can grasp what it will take, not just to make a game that catches the interest of new generations, but sends members of the past generation down a nostalgia trip. If it veers too far off course, it's gonna be just a bunch of games with the Final Fantasy name slapped on them.

If you want to grow your audience you focus on the younger potential customers. The older generation have other responsibilities like a family and a job. Most aren't gaming as much. Some may have stop gaming altogether due to life responsibilities. Thus they aren't reliable as customers and the brand remain stagnant.
The older gen Alpha and younger gen Z have a good 1-2 decades before it's their turn to be cycle for the next generation that comes after them. While they are still young it would be in SE's best interest as a business to figure out how to appeal to them.
